Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Jess Hartman of Philadelphia, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I have been coming to Cape May for 35 years! Who are you normally with? I’m usually visiting with my family. Favorite thing about Cape May? I’d say my favorite things about Cape May are the beautiful beaches and the sport fishing Least favorite thing? My least favorite thing is when businesses start to close down for the winter months. Favorite restaurants? The C-View, The Lobster House Raw Bar and George’s Place are my favorite places to eat. Favorite place to stay? That would have to be my house, which is near Baltimore Street beach. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would bring the Beach Theatre back. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I really like the annual guidebook, Cool Cape May. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I think there should be more than five color issues each year! What’s your T-shirt size? My T-shirt size is large, thanks!

“Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy.” — William Butler Yeats “Even when they have nothing, the Irish emit a kind of happiness, a joy.” — Fiona Shaw “Being Irish is very much a part of who I am. I take it everywhere with me.” — Colin Farrell

COUPLES in Ireland could marry legally on St Brigid’s Day (February 1) in Teltown, County Meath, as recently as the 1920s by simply walking towards each other. If the marriage failed, they could “divorce’” by walking away from each other at the same spot, on St Brigid’s day the following year.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Dirty Piece Of Business SHOP local, right? Try telling that to the folks who run the city. The landscape design work for Convention Hall has been contracted out to the Wells Appel firm, based in Philadelphia, without local firms being given a chance to quote for the $14,000 contract. Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May President John Cooke told us he got a hold of City Manager Bruce MacLeod (something we always have a hard time with), who said that unless the design agreement for professional services is going to cost the city $17,500 or more, putting it out to bid is not mandatory. (Maybe we’ll just have John dispatch our questions to Bruce from now on. Might be a more efficient, productive process.) But… so what? Does it really matter what the project costs? Any business is good business, and our neighbors should at least get the opportunity to bid for the work. We’re pretty disgusted this didn’t happen. And we’re not alone. Arron Rothwell of Jersey Coast Lawn Care finds the insinuation that there isn’t a capable landscape designer in our own backyard insulting. “It’s lighting and planting,” he told us. “It not rocket science. And there are a lot of skilled companies within a 20-minute drive from here.” We caught up with the owner of one of them, Rob Lundholm of Lundholm Landscaping, in Cape May. “I have experience doing large-scale work,” he told us. “Unfortunately, these jobs often go to someone out of town.” Then there’s Mark Lare of Rustic Garden Landscaping, based in Cape May

Court House. Mark’s been responsible for work at the Beach Shack, the Ocean Club Hotel and most of the work at Congress Hall…. you know — that huge, beautifully landscaped property on the beachfront. “I would have done that job for almost nothing,” Mark told us, “Just to have had my name on it.” So what, then, was the city’s incentive for outsourcing the job? It was suggested that maybe it’s the fact that the county is picking up part of the tab (though that doesn’t seem like a reason to us). Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman told us that this wasn’t a factor at all. Rather, the issue is that “time is of the essence.” Considering the looming May deadline, the city was more comfortable contracting a company with whom they already have a “working relationship.” It’s true; they do have a relationship. Stuart Appel, president and managing principal of Wells Appel and adjunct professor at Temple University (the alma mater of Mayor Ed Mahaney), also has a Philadelphia design studio through Temple University that Mayor Mahaney previously approached about meeting some of the city’s landscaping needs at “recreation, historic and ecological sites.” (You might remember the Rotary and Harborview Park work that took place in 2009.) But... don’t you agree it’s entirely lame that the city has not bothered to forge a “working relationship” with local landscaping businesses? We’ve been discussing Convention Hall for nearly four years. The fact that it needs to be landscaped isn’t breaking news. “Frankly, it wasn’t my decision,” Wichterman said, “though I concurred with it. If you want to criticize us,

I can’t blame you.” You can always rely on Jack Wichterman to at least tell it like it is. In the meantime, John Cooke says the chamber of commerce “will remain vigilant that local contractors have an opportunity to complete this project.” Wichterman assured us that the installation aspect of the job will “indeed go out to bid.” We’ll be watching out for that

A Tricky Little Beach THERE are plenty of special places in Cape May, but few as contentious as the Cove beach. The replenishment project which took place there between the fall of 2010 and the spring of 2011 was all for naught, according to an angry email we received from a reader last week, since the sand is all but gone. How could the city “throw all that money literally into the ocean,” the message demanded. Good question. We contacted Mayor Ed Mahaney, who told us the replenishment was part of the Lower Cape May Meadows Project, geared toward protecting the delicate ecosystems of Cape May Point, Lower Township and the land in front of the nature conservancy — as well as nearby properties — from erosion-related damages. The project cost $16 million, but the Cove was only a small portion (“no more than three blocks”) of this otherwise successful, six mile-long endeavor…and it only cost the city “an infinitesimal” $200,778. The “bulk of the bill” was footed by the US Army Corp of Engineers and the Department of Environmental Protection. Okay, but… still. Two hundred thou-

THE EXIT ZERO CARTOON... By Laurie Bender

AT THE COVE, BEACH EROSION CAN HAPPEN SO FAST... Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 sand is still $200,000… right? And anyone with eyes will tell you: at the Cove, at least, there’s not much to show for this money. “We are disappointed with how quickly the sand washed away,” Mahaney said, “but you have to understand this was an experiment to see if the type of typography created could prevent problems in terms of erosion and major storms in the future, and it did serve its purpose. There’s no other beach like the Cove on the east coast. There are different groin structures, it faces the ocean on an angle, and this was the first time sand had been put in this area by man.” The first time? We called Mahaney back to double-check we’d heard correctly. “The first time,” he repeated. And boy did that open up a whole other barrel of monkeys. Several folks with whom we shared this information were in disbelief. It led to one especially heated phone conversation with our Historical Editor Ben Miller, who sent us three articles — from three different years and three different publications — which seem to suggest differently. To settle the debate, we got in touch with Richard Peearsall, spokesman for the Army Corp of Engineers. We asked

him, once and for all, if the Cove has been replenished prior to this most recent project. “I believe so,” he said, before hanging up to do the research. And what did the research reveal? “So this IS the first time the Cove has been replenished,” he called us back to say. Cue banging of heads against desks. Perhaps the problem is that everyone has a different idea about what constitutes the Cove. Everything south of the Third Avenue groin? Or the section of beach in front of the Sunset Pavilion, too? We reached out to a four-year lifeguard, Jack Lindeman (who returned our call from England...thanks, Jack!). He said the Cape May Beach Patrol labels the Cove as the stretch between the jetty and the Mount Vernon ramp. Huh. Something we CAN agree on is that this little beach, whatever its parameters are, is an important place to many people (it wouldn’t be so contentious if not). According to the city, the first lifeguard stand was stationed here in 1995, and it has been growing in popularity ever since. “It’s unique,” lifeguard Jack told us, “because there are areas of it that appeal to surfers, areas that appeal to kayakers, those that are fun for little kids and families, and spots for people who want quiet and those

who want to socialize.” Sue Lotozo, owner of Flying Fish Studio, has been a “Cover” since the seventies, when she found “a nice rock” she liked to lie on, and she’s enjoyed watching the beach evolve. “I remember there being giant tide pools there 15 years ago,” Sue told us. “They were so deep, kids learned to swim in them. We didn’t mind the inconvenience of trekking all the way to the end of Cape May because it was just so cool. It’s a beach that is always different, always changing.” And perhaps that’s the appeal of it. “The Cove will be what the Cove will be,” Sue said. “It’s up to the tides and the currents.” We are anxious to see what the city decides to do about replenishment in the future. Is this a losing battle, or a losing battle that’s worth fighting, anyway? We’ll have to wait and see. “No decisions have been made yet,” Mahaney told us. “There are a lot of factors. But if it happens again, we want it to be the best engineered replenishment possible.”

Page 17

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 But that didn’t stop 239 people from showing up at Marq’s Pub in the Marquis de Lafayette hotel on Saturday for the chamber of commerce’s Second Annual Chili and Chowder Challenge. And why would it? All proceeds from this event benefitted the local food bank. Plus, people love chili. Okay, that’s not always true. We found four people at the cook-off who told us they never eat the stuff. We think that makes you weird on two accounts — one, because it tastes so good, and two, because you chose to spend your Saturday at an event which was pretty much all about chili — but that’s neither here nor there. For those who DO indulge, this was a first-rate experience. There were nine contestants — some professional, some amateur, and all of them ladling something creative. We sampled almost everything, and were impressed with the variety of f lavors. But we were more impressed by the guts of the cooks. Jim Cutshall, a graphic artist from Town Bank who took home the best amateur chowder title for the second year in a row, told us he also decided this year to

enter his chili. It was the first time he’s ever made chili, which either makes him nuts or brave. Jim used chocolate as a main ingredient, which we think makes him either nuts or genius. We’re landing on the latter, as we spotted an elderly lady hobbling over for seconds “just to make sure” it was her favorite. We’d also like to give kudos to Chef Bill Walters from the Queen Victoria Bed and Breakfast, who chose to represent his new employer after only a week on the job. He took home the best pro chowder title, which is just one more reminder that there’s a lot more to B&Bs than tea and crumpets. Rick Hubbs, defending champ,

didn’t disappoint, either; he caught and cooked the striper for his chowder. “You’d think I have a lot of time on my hands,” said Rick. He thinks the reason he ran out was that so many people turned up; we think it had something more to do with the taste. Then there was the aunt-and-nephew team of Catherine Bosna and 15-year-old Anthony Bosna of North Cape May who, although they aren’t vegetarians themselves, made a vegetarian chili because it “just tastes better.” Well, Catherine made it (she comes from a family with eleven kids and is “used to cooking in bulk”); Andrew just came along to be “the marketer.” He also told us that he’s transferring from Lower Township to Cape May Tech school this year where, because he’s a freshman, he’s the “grunt.” (Andrew was no grunt at this contest, though; he and his aunt took home the best amateur chili title.) You know the food is good when people come all the way from New Providence, New Jersey, to try it. (Okay, Jack and Lisa McKnight were being sarcastic when they told us they’d come to Cape May from three hours away just for this contest, but they told us we could print that anyway.) And

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 17 Mike and Kim Pellman came all the way from Lancaster County just for these good eats! (Okay, not really, but they also told us we could print this if we wanted to. We appreciate your understanding that we love us some good quotes.) What we did NOT appreciate was Paul Kerlinger of Cape May Times giving us a fake name when we asked him about his chili experience. His wife, Jane Kashlak, told us he made a habit of giving Exit Zero a fake name. Now we’re on to you. Finally, congratulations to Chef John Sweeten of Marq’s Pub (whose chili took three hours to make), and Don and Jane Woods of Zoe’s, who tied for best pro chili.

Green Day VISITING an Irish shop is a no-brainer this time of year; one tock up on all sorts of Irish incidentals to get ready for March 17, the day that everyone seems to suddenly possess some Celtic heritage. We popped into All Irish Imports on Lafayette for some necessities: green hot chocolate, Jacob’s Lincoln Shortbread Biscuits, and a couple

of St. Patrick’s Day temporary tattoos. We couldn’t help but linger for a moment by the Solvar jewelry. Shop girl Alex Hamilton (one of our favorites in town, and a former Employee of the Week) pointed out that they carry Solvar charms too, including a cool three-leaf clover one for $33.95. Hey, wait a second — three-leaf sham-

rocks? What about the famed four-leaf clover of lore? What gives here, Alex — are you guys selling defective good-luck charms? “Actually, the Irish believe that fourleaf clovers are bad luck,” Alex tells us. What the what? Why? “Because they’re mutant,” she replies. (Mutant is her word, not ours, although it is one of our favorites.) “It’s only in the United States that four-leaf clovers are considered good luck.” Hmm. How did we get to be this old and not know this? “The notion of the three-leaf clover being lucky is based on the Holy Trinity, and that was started by St Patrick,” Alex tells us. Okay, Alex, you talked us into it. We bought a laminated shamrock — yes, it’s a real, ‘wild shamrock, direct from the highways and byeways of Ireland,’ says the packaging. We’ll tuck a little luck into our pocket, thanks. If you’ve got to get your Irish on, whether sophisticated Celtic jewelry or green sequined baseball caps (a snip at $16), get into All Irish Imports.

PARTING SHOT A big congrats to our photographer (and possibly the best-known man in town),

Aleksey Moryakov, and his beautiful wife, Maria Kogan, who got married at the Southern Mansion last week. Although it was weird to see Aleks on the other side of the camera, the ceremony was beautiful. Be sure to wish him a lifetime of happiness the next time you see him out and about... he deserves it.

Let Geoffrachaun Help Get Your Irish On!

O

KAY, folks, this one may cause some controversy. If you get mad, feel free to comment on the EZ Facebook page, and I’ll reply personally. That said, the road running parallel to the beach is officially called Beach Avenue, not Beach Drive — the designation has never changed and it was never named Beach Drive. I’ve had longtime locals argue both sides of this with me, some swearing it was always Avenue and others that it used to be Drive. The confusion stems from the road’s earliest days, when it was officially designated Beach Avenue, but known around town as “the beach drive.” It was originally built in 1872 and appears on the rare F.W. Beers 1872 map, but only ran as far west as Ocean Street. As this Philadelphia Inquirer article from 1889 shows, “drive” was simply a nickname, much as “the Cove” is for the 3rd Avenue Beach. In the late 1800s, Washington Street was known as “the commercial drive,” though the name never stuck like it did elsewhere. Another article from 1876 notes, “Mr. George W. Grier, of this city, is having four cottages built at Cape May. Two on Beach Avenue and two on Stockton Ave...”

2/25: Benefit For Frank Shields At The Cape May VFW

«

Frank Shields, a 53-year-old father-of-three, has been living in the Cape May area for the last 17 years, and has been battling cancer for nine of these years. The disease has made it difficult for Frank to continue with his job as zoo maintenance worker at the Cape May County Park and Zoo so, in order to help offset the costs of his medical bills, more than 200 friends and family members gathered at the local VFW for a benefit in his honor. They also contributed to a “medical wishing well,” donating some of the supplies Frank depends on. We especially love the handmade shirts that folks sported at this event... check out the photos. Here, Aimee Donahue, Lynne Grasso and Adi Grasso take a minute to pose with Frank for our photographer.

The Movie Column

N

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

EVER has a post-Oscar season been bleaker than this year! It’s as if studios look at a project and say, “Well, that’s not going to win any Oscars, let’s release it after the big show.” This Means War, no thanks. Journey 2, couldn’t pay me to see the first one. Ghost Rider 2? Really? There was enough support to green light a Ghost Rider 1? Pass. Yes, I took a little hiatus from the big screen that ended with A Separation, an Iranian film that took this year’s Oscar for Best Foreign Film. The film is playing in Northfield, but it might not be in theaters for long. A Separation tells the story of Nader, a man struggling with an ailing father, preadolescent daughter, and absentee wife. Trouble comes when he hires a caretaker for the father while he works. From the start, the woman who takes the job would rather not have it, but needs the money. Her apprehension becomes evident as she leaves the father alone, tied loosely to the bed, and leaves the house. Nader comes home to find his father lying on the

A Separation tells the tale of Nader, and illustrates Iran’s laws, lifestyles and humanity f loor near death, and becomes enraged at the neglect. When the caretaker returns to explain, Nader pushes her out of the house. Then major trouble begins! This film gives a candid and in-depth look at modern-day Iran. Beyond what little we see on television or newspaper articles, this movie is steeped in the cul-

ture’s laws and lifestyles, struggles and humanity. Still, the film’s themes are universal — caring for elderly parents, marriage conf licts, anxieties facing a child caught in the middle. So although this story is best told in a setting like Iran — with its chaos and machismo (which I’m certain is not what it’s called in Iran) — it could also have been told in any country. Clearly the Oscar here was well deserved, as the acting was superb (especially by the children) and the story well told. Forget that the “courtroom” drama for a murder trial is played out in an office resembling that of an assistant principal’s office; you will appreciate the texture of this film. The emotions are as genuine as the settings, the drama as palatable as the characters. This film gets high marks for gutsy and genuine storytelling—and for, well let’s says it, not sucking when most of the other films out right now do exactly that. Can’t wait for next week’s releases! If you travel to see A Separation, let me know what you thought of the film by emailing capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? My name is Rocky Holton. What about this guy? This is my son, Amar. I like your Spiderman shirt, Amar. Thanks. Where are you from? We live in Woodbine. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? Just buying some food from the Lobster House market. Amar wanted to see some fish. Well, who can blame him? What’s for dinner? Whiting and lots of clams. Since it’s the Irish issue... what’s your favorite thing about the Irish? Oh, they’re lucky. Do you consider yourself lucky? Hmm, somewhat. What about you, Amar? No way! But Spiderman was lucky, right? Hmmmm.... Interview by Diane Stopyra PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Sleeping Around

Every week, we test the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Southern Mansion WHERE IS IT? The Southern Mansion is located at 720 Washington Street. WHAT IS IT? The hotel was built in 1863 as an American bracket, post and beam villa. Eighty-three years later, it was sold for a meager $8,000 (unbelievable, right?), converted into a boarding house, and left to deteriorate. Throughout the 90s, The Southern Mansion underwent a massive renovation which restored all of the original, magnificent furnishings and architectural elements. WHO RUNS IT? The hotel is owned by local Barbara Bray-Wilde, and run with the help of a staff genuinely in love with their jobs. “Being here is like stepping back in time,” Special Events Manager Andreea Leaha told us. HOW MANY ROOMS? There are 24 very Gone With The Wind-style rooms (we loved the 15-foot ceilings and foot-wide baseboards.) Some have balconies, one is a loft, and they’re the largest in Cape May. WHAT’S THE VIBE? This place feels like a museum where you’re allowed to touch, use and enjoy all the goods. It

blends Victorian with southern with modern. (That leopard-print carpet may appear modern, but it’s actually a nod to the pratice of displaying real animal skins in Victorian homes, for example. And the painting in our room, Andreea told us, is “very controversial.” Next to a twenty-four carat golf-leaf mirror and an antique vanity, both original to the house, is a piece of art done in 1987 which depicts a joker standing over a naked lady.) AMENITIES? You’ll enjoy on-site parking, climate-controlled rooms, flat-screen televisions, room service, beach chairs and

towels, wi-fi, a parlor with two fireplaces, and a solarium overlooking the Italian gardens of the grounds. WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? It is custom-designed, brand new and dressed in Egyptian cotton sheets... and it feels that way. WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST? Besides a serene vibe? Oscar, our efficient waiter, served us eggs on buttery brioche with a side of sausage, home fries, and a glass of lemon-infused water to wash it all down. INSIDER TIP: Make sure to climb up to the cupola from which you can see all the way to the ocean. The Southern Mansion will host romantic dinners here for two. Oh, and don’t worry about Esther, the niece of the hotel’s original owner... she’s a friendly ghost. Finally, ask for info on the Southern Mansion’s beautiful Willow Creek Winery. RANDOM FACT: Check out the space where a knob in the staircase used to be. In the 19th century, this knob signaled a mortgage having been paid in full. CONTACT INFO: Call (609) 884-7171, or visit www.southernmansion.com.

EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Kirsten Loose, who was ambushed while walking along the Washington Street Mall. Where are you from? Malvern, Pennsylvania. Occupation: Student. What were you doing when we interrupted? We’re heading over to The Original Fudge Kitchen for some treats. When is the last time you got some flowers? I last got flowers on my birthday — December 13! PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY KATE’S

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My best friend and I have jobs and a TINY apartment this summer in Cape May while on break from college — can’t WAIT! But my friend has been seeing a guy for the past couple of months and it’s getting serious — I’ve noticed lately that he’s at her place ALL THE TIME. I’m afraid that if this continues, we’re going to have a third (and possibly non-paying) roommate this summer. Should I say something now, or just cross my fingers, hope it doesn’t happen, and deal with it if/when it does? —Third Wheel Dear Wheel Any number of things could happen here, including the possibility that they will break up next Thursday. But let’s play worstcase scenario, shall we? If things continue in their current state, you likely will have a third roommate this summer. Is your apart-

ment large enough for three tenants, and more importantly, will the landlord be okay with it? What are the odds that this boyfriend will be getting a job, as opposed to sitting on the beach all day? And do you actually like this person? These are all things you should discuss with your friend sooner than later; you can start the conversation by saying something like “I notice you and Leroy are attached at the hip these days. How is he going to function without you while we’re picking up guys at Harbor View happy

hour all summer?” The Answer Lady jests, of course, but seriously, you should lay the groundwork now. And let’s say that he does become a fixture at your place: are you okay with the idea of being odd man out? Bear in mind that in a tiny apartment, you’ll be privy to their, um, interactions, both when they’re getting along and when they are not. Dear Answer Lady My roommate is a good friend and easy to live with. Her birthday, however, falls on St Patrick’s day, and each year, we’re expected to make a day of it with her as guest of honor (she even has a green tiara that she wears from the moment she gets up until the moment she passes out). I love celebrating as much as the next guy, but I’m tired of having my day hijacked. How do I bail without being a spoilsport? — Party-pooper Dear Party That depends, dear. What are your alternate plans? If you’d prefer to sit at the Depot with some corned beef and cabbage and a book, that’s one thing. If you’re partying at Carney’s while she’s partying at Cabanas, that’s another.

For centuries, pilgrims have gone to Ireland to kiss the fabled Blarney Stone and gain the power of irresistible persuasive speech. Now you can own a tiny piece, certified by the Irish government and carefully harvested from around the stone’s base as a result of weathering. The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

S THERE any other race on Earth quite like the Irish? Not a one, thank God. I recall when we first saw Irishmen here in Cape May, just after that disaster they had in “the ‘ole country” — I forget the details, it may have been The Great Aubergine Famine. Anyway, we were at that time building our undersea tunnel to Philly, and needed some more workers, our last batch of Wildwooders having ignored instructions and maps and tunneled straight down until they hit lava. It was a mercy that we got the doors shut in time to prevent a volcano from taking Cape May, but once we opened them again, those 300 brawny men would have fit nicely into an ashtray. So, we bought the passage of Irish replacements, and had a proper welcome prepared: a band, flags, beer and a score of policemen with stout sticks (as we had heard rumors of the Irish tendency not to take the hint in matters of public manners). The ship — Celtic Bhoy — hoved into sight, and I swear that even from a mile off, we could hear an almighty din that we

assumed to be gunfire, but when it grew closer, turned out to be 300 Irishmen talking at once. Well, after a pause just offshore for some gentle decontamination — we had the ship hosed down with neat bleach and lime — we let the Bhoy lower the gangplank, and the band started playing Danny Boy. Well, faster than you could say “what’s the craic?” there came a tumbling mass of people, rolling down at us, swearing and fighting among themselves the whole way.

They paused to drain the 20 kegs of beer in three seconds, then carried on brawling. It was only when my constables had whacked a few dozen heads (to little effect) that we realized this was in fact a celebratory mood, and no harm was intended. And in fact when our new-found friends had sobered up, only a week later, I found them to be the most charming and guileless people on the planet: I had of course to remind them that I was in charge by bareknuckle boxing their de facto head, one Malarkey (I was unsure if that was his entire name or just a segment, or in fact a description of his unpredictable ways, but it sufficed, and he for his part called me “DHCTTRR” for as long as we knew each other) every day, but I rather enjoyed that. Of course, the tunnel was never completed, due to the Irishmen’s indefatigable cheeky incoherent charm, meaning they were forever needing days off to marry locals folk, spreading those genes responsible for red hair and a tendency to cry and fight at the drop of a hat far wider than they deserved.

Activity Of The Week

M

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Sherlock and shamrocks.

AY your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks this March as you celebrate St Patrick and Sherlock Holmes. The action in the first Holmes mystery, A Study in Scarlet, begins on the fourth of March, so why not celebrate the world’s foremost consulting detective this month? From March 16-18, fans will be presented with a mystery on Friday evening and asked to solve it by Sunday afternoon. This time, it’s “Sherlock Holmes and the Trial of Moriarty’s Challenge.” Dressed in Victorian attire, assistant detectives will roam the streets of Cape May, looking for clues - as the Irish say, “You’ll never plough a field by turning it over in your mind.” There are plenty of Sherlock Holmes packages available, including the full weekend package, which includes a welcome reception, performances, tour, luncheon and gift for $180 per couple or $95 per person. Overnight packages are also available. Contact the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts at 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 for more information.

If you need some pointers to help you play detective, East Lynne Theater Company presents “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Norwood Builder” on Saturday, March 17, at 8 pm. Tickets are $25, $15 for students. Fear not — the mystery lovers strolling the streets of Cape May will not distract you from the St Patrick’s Day festivities. A visit

to All-Irish Imports will get you in the spirit. The Knights of Columbus offers a St. Patrick’s Day dinner and auction on March 16 in Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Hall. In the Boiler Room, you can (sham)rock out to Irish music by the John Byrne Band Friday and Saturday night. Irish potatoes are ready at The Original Fudge Kitchen, and Cape May’s pubs have all the libations you need to toast the man who chased the snakes from the Emerald Isle. St Patrick’s Day is a good time to go green, environmentally, too. Stop by the Mad Batter and congratulate them on their new solar panels. Or join the Slow Food movement at “Forum on the Green: A Farm-to-Table Dinner at Congress Hall” on Friday, March 16 for a “green” meal including Cape May salts, local cheese, produce from Beach Plum farm, and local wines. Tickets are $50 per person, and proceeds benefit Cape May Forum and Slow Food South Jersey Shore. With apologies to my Irish mother, there are two kinds of people in the world; those who are in Cape May and those who wish they were. Next week: Diversity Weekend

Name: Carol Hickman. Occupation: Customer service clerk at Cape May Acme. Age: I’m 62. Hometown: I was born and raised right here in West Cape May. How long have you worked here? I’ve been here for 42 years and eight months — retiring soon! Best thing about the job? The customers, of course. What do you recommend here? I always tell visitors to make sure they go out to dinner — there are just so many great places to eat. And of course, the beach, and I’m also a big fan of the zoo — we have such a great zoo here in Cape May County. What’s your OTHER dream job? That would probably have been working on a horse farm. Favorite thing about Cape May? It’s that small-town feel, with a quiet atmosphere and a low crime rate. You feel safe here. Interview by Kate Chadwick

LAUREN Murphy’s love of broadcasting and television journalism began in seventh grade at Richard M. Teitelman Middle School. RMTV and the Lower Cape May Today Show made her passion for broadcasting flourish throughout the years. This go-getting junior made her mark on the world of TV journalism by winning an internship in Philadelphia at KYW, where she met Jim Donovan and learned from an insider. Not only did Murphy win the internship, but also the NOCTI video contest for career-based high school classes — hers was picked out of 1,700 videos submitted. The daughter of Lisa and Robert, Murphy has not only dabbled in the art of broadcasting and TV media, but she has also been an LCMR cheerleader since freshman year and an honors/AP student. “My inspiration would most likely have to be my grandmother. She always had a cheerful personality and helped other people,” said Murphy of her tenacious desire to succeed. Murphy hopes to attend Temple University to continue her studies in TV media. If a TV career doesn’t work, she wouldn’t mind becoming a math teacher. No matter which path Murphy takes, she is sure to bring her enthusiasm and strong work ethic with her. PEARL is a sweet younger miniature pit... just 33 pounds! At first, she seems a bit anxious, but all she needs is some time to adjust. Once she gets to know you, Pearl is affectionate. Because she is calm, she’ll do best in a calm, quiet enviroment, but she’s likely okay with other pets! If you could use a friend and, let’s be real, everyone needs another friend, stop by and meet this adorable pup. The adoption fee is $95.

«

CAPPACHINO, just like the drink for which he’s named, might just be the pick-me-up you need. He’s a sweet and excitable boy...sometimes too excited, so he’ll need some patience. Cappachino will most likely get along well with other dogs, although cats...not so much. And he’ll probably need a home with older children, if any. This cutie deserves a second chance; let’s make that happen! The adoption fee is $95.

We are not out of our minds... You asked and we delivered! • Root touch-up $35* • Haircut/style $28* • T-zone hilites $35* • Other color specials online! • Keratin special $50 off • 50-minute massage: $35 plus tax • Manicures $10 • Pedicures $30 Please enjoy, as these are prices you can’t afford to miss! *For new hair clients only. PANDORA is a lovable younger girl. She’s also a very nervous girl, so you’ll have to take things slow with her. But she does know a few commands, and she’s very food motivated... so she’ll be great to train. Pandora is okay with cats, good with other dogs, and even good with kids. If you’re wise enough to realize what a lucky find Pandora is, stop by the shelter; we bet you’ll fall in love. The adoption fee is $95.

Cape May’s Mariners Hall DEDICATED TO CAPE MAY’S MARITIME HISTORY

We can do it with your help - please sign our petition! There has been a lot of anger and frustration over the new “Convention Hall” being built. Many lines have been drawn in the sand, people are genuinely upset and the city of Cape May’s reputation has suffered. One thing we can all agree upon, however, is our admiration and respect for the mariners who operate off the coast of Cape May. From the earliest days of Cape May’s maritime history, sailors and fishermen have pulled out of Cape May ports, never to return home. We seek to honor them. Please sign this petition to name the new Cape May community center “Mariners Hall” in honor of the many mariners who have lost their lives and those who continue to risk their own each day. To sign, go to www.change.org and search for “Cape May”. The petition is at the top.

APE May Stage serves so many members of our community, from children to seniors and vacationers to residents. As part of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance’s “Stages Festival,” Artistic Director Roy Steinberg has been traveling all over Cape May and Cumberland counties to bring theatre to community centers and schools and libraries. “I have found that some of the exercises and games that professional actors use are useful in everyday life and can make one a better golfer, parent, spouse or member of our community,” says Steinberg. The former Broadway actor uses images and sensory work as well as trust exercises which encourage workshop members to open their senses, breathe and tap into emotions they never knew they had. The workshops are free and people who’ve participated have been overwhelmed with delight and surprised at what happens so quickly. The next opportunity to attend is on March 19 at the Sea Isle Library from 6pm to 7pm. It is open to everyone at all levels of experience (and those with no experience whatsoever!). Equally exciting is Cape May Stage’s Second Stage Series, which brings the biggest stars on Broadway right here to Cape May Stage. Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HIS column is about rails. Fence rails? Railroad rails? No; Virginia and Clapper Rails. They’ve been around all winter. Now they are making their presence known. They are calling incessantly. It’s that time of year when rails start thinking about making more rails and this makes them vocal. That’s right. They talk a lot first. What do they say? Well, Clapper Rails say “Rah, Rah, Rah, Rah Rah.” Virginia Rails say “Oink, Oink, Oink, Oink Oink.” They also say “k’k’k’krrrrr.” What are they saying, exactly? Something along the lines of “Hi, Rail with the Right Stuff Here.” For the next three months or so, marshes are going to ring with the sound of Rahs and Oinks. In case you have a tough time differentiating between Rah and Oink, there is an easier way to tell Clapper from Virginia. Clapper is a salt marsh bird. Virginia sides more toward fresh water. If you hear Rah from fresh-

water, you may very well be listening to an entirely different species of rail. This is King Rail. There are very few places where a person can hear King Rail in Cape May. You are better off sticking to Virginia Rail (which is relatively common in its proper habitat) and Clapper Rail (which is very common.)

Did you say: “How do I see a Clapper Rail?”? Oooh. That’s more challenging. But it can be done. Start by going to a rail rich area — Jakes Landing Road, for instance, about 30 miles north up Bayshore Road from Cape May. Low tide is best. A good technique is to drive to the end of the road and scan the muddy banks for a chicken-like bird with a long, thin, down turned bill. It will be mostly gray with a warm blush about the face. It will be walking in a slow crouch or it might just be standing in the semi-open, preening. Virginia Rail. Good luck. The birds are found in Pond Creek, and less commonly in the South Cape May Meadows. But the habitat in the meadows is getting better and better for rails every year. Who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky. My favorite rail hunting ground is in Cumberland County, a place south of Dividing Creek called Turkey Point. This morning there were over a dozen Virginia

Bird Droppings ? From Page 75 Rails calling and. . .Lord only knows how many Clappers. Did the birds just now migrate in? No. These birds wintered. It was a mild winter and many survived. This time last year my journal was all but devoid of any mention of rails. The snow and the cold just clobbered them. Are there any other rails? Yes. There’s Sora, which is a rare breeder in the county (although it does breed commonly in North Jersey). There is Black Rail, which has just been declared a New Jersey endangered species. Jakes Landing is about the only place to hear this bird. Don’t even think about seeing one...although a friend of mine did once encounter one just outside the Ugly Mug one night. And yes, she was going in, not out. The bird was migrating. It got a bit confused. A rail that might — just might — be around is Yellow Rail. The birds breed in northern freshwater marshes, and winter primarily south of here. But a few birds probably try to overwinter every year. This year, it’s possible that any Yellow Rail that did try to tough it out in New Jersey made it. But seeing a Yellow Rail

Photographer Clayton Taylor captured this image of a Clapper Rail taking flight is no easier than seeing Black Rail. You’re better off sticking to Clapper Rails. Much less frustration. If you are still confused (or just plain cluless) about the difference and similarities of Clapper, Virginia, Yellow or King Rails, and Sora, stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all of your nature needs. Or consider joining Pete on a Monday morning walk through the South Cape May Meadows where he can personally get you in touch with a rail (or two). The walk meets every Monday morning at 7:30 am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Blvd. CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake

Lily in Cape May Point (609.884.2736), and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. Pick up a free schedule, birding map and checklist. Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, or sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www.BirdCapeMay. org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column

M

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

YLES is a delightful person. He’s an excellent conversationalist with a great sense of humor. He reads, he runs marathons, and he rescues abandonded dogs from the local shelter. (Told you... delightful.) He’s also pleasant to look at... one of those guys with a masculine build but a face full of boyish charm (oh, those dimples...). But my favorite thing about Myles? He genuinely respects women. But Myles is single, and it’s likely that he will remain this way for a long time. I know — that’s a shame. Some lucky lady should be enjoying this guy so the rest of us can live vicariously through her. But Myles is hoping for a lot. Maybe too much. Myles is attracted most to driven, educated, independent women with successful careers who’ve all but clawed their way to the top. Women who love their jobs. Women who can hold their own in a ponytail and a board room full of double XY chromosomes. There’s nothing unreasonable about holding out for such a kick-ass lady; there’s

no shortage of them out there. That’s not the problem. The problem is that Myles also wants a family, and he wants for his hypothetical children what he himself had growing up — a woman who is home to bake cookies with the kiddies when they come home from school. A woman who’s there to tuck them in at night. A woman who likes tending to bloody knees and carpooling to soccer practice. The kind of woman who’s got those

sexy maternal instincts and domestic skills he so admires. Fold his socks and serve him a homemade lasagna, and he’ll be forever grateful. Good luck, Myles; you’re going to need it. And I feel your pain. I’m torn, too. Not to set the Women’s Movement back about 50 years here, but I like doing dishes (sometimes even barefoot). I like spending a Saturday making lasagna and folding socks. I feel sexy when I’m doing laundry, and I think being a soccer mom must be rewarding. But I want a career, too. If you expect your socks folded, men of my future, you might have to bring them to a full-service laundromat, because I’ll be shattering glass ceilings. I want to be that girl holding her own in a ponytail and an office full of testosterone. Lots of women do. So good luck to us as well... we’re going to need it. Maybe the idea of doing it all — and doing it all well — is laughable. Because maybe it’s just not humanly possible to be career-minded without microwaving dinner from time to time. But you know what? My god, are we ever impressive for trying.
