The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

id you see that story about the Canadians deliberately flushing millions of gallons of poop into their waterways? I was aghast and more than a little smug. As you all know, the modern flush toilet was invented in Cape May, as was the whole notion of recycling bodily waste. Before that invention (by yours truly, of course, though that ingrate Thomas Crapper stole the idea from me one late night in The Brown Room when he was over on vacation and we were drinking a little too much single malt), we all used to gather at The Point every day at “sluicing time” when the horse-drawn wagons would arrive from their daily collection of poop and pee (from chamberpots) and empty it into the ocean at the turn of the tide (this was a fine art: I recall the time there was an unexpected tidal surge that caused us all to have walnut-brown legs for a month after). There was a whole industry surrounding this process: the wagoneers were a peculiar and hardy breed with nasal voices and wide eyes, the scurrying “chamber boys” were the

little scamps who had to run into a house and out with o’er-brimming pots and empty them into the tank wagons with a swift economical movement (that was a hash and pungent apprenticeship, I can assure you). A portion of the waste was doled out to the city’s best rose gardens, and there was a local fella (I forget his name: I think he was a Scotchman, as they tend to be opportunists and much at home in poop) who panned for gold in the newly-fouled waters. That is not as crazy as you might imagine: we tend to have a rich diet in Cape May and consume several hundred pounds of gold leaf in des-

sert form every year, and he would often yell for joy and shout “Ah’m rich!” and hold aloft an oaken arm clutching a gold nugget. We bystanders would half cheer and half groan in horror at his grisly find. We also kept a portion for use in our hand-built catapult, which could, we had discovered by careful experimentation, lob a 10-pound poop all the way to Wildwood. That all changed when our patented Cape May Flushers were installed in every house, and the city was filled with howls of delight, shrieks of surprise and the occasional splash as less steady and thinner residents fell into the toilet bowls and were flushed out to sea. As you realize, the end result was still pretty sh… I mean, pretty grim, and it’s taken a while after for us to complete our recycling plant. I am pleased to announce here in this rag, that as of Monday, we will recycle and reUSE every poop pee and whatever else you may produce, and reflow the crystal clear water through your household water pipes! Drink up, friends! The future is here!

The Activity Column

C

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Christmas tree-lighting

hristmas trees are part of the ancient human practice of using greenery to remind us, during the dark days of winter, that spring will come again. Early Egyptians believed that Winter came because the sun god, Ra, was ill. The solstice marked his return to health, and Egyptians brought in green rushes to celebrate. Romans decorated with greenery to mark Saturnalia, their solstice celebration. Medieval Europeans decorated a fir tree with apples, called a Paradise Tree, to mark the festival of Adam and Eve on December 24. In 1510, the people of Riga, Latvia raised a tree in the town square to mark Christmas and welcome the New Year. Around the same time, legend says, Martin Luther was inspired by the stars shining on a snowdusted fir tree. He brought a little tree indoors and decorated it with candles. By the 1600s, German Christmas markets featured lavishly decorated trees, and in the 19th century, the custom traveled to Britain, and then to the United States. In 1882, Thomas Edison’s right-hand man, Edward Hibberd Johnson,

electrified his Christmas tree with 80 red, white and blue hand-wired bulbs. On December 24, 1923, Calvin Coolidge stood outside the White House and flipped the switch on the first national Christmas tree, decorated with 2,500 red, white and green lights. In 1931 construction workers at Rockefeller Center fought against the gloom of the Depression with a modest Christmas tree, sparking a tradition that continues today. On Saturday, November 21, Santa arrives to flip the switch on the tree at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street,

from 6 to 8pm. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) hosts this festive Christmas tree lighting as part of their Holiday Preview Weekend. Visitors are encouraged to share in the holiday spirit by bringing a non-perishable food item for the Cape May Community Food Bank. The decorated Physick House will be open for free, so you can step back into Christmas Past. Tour An Old-Fashioned Christmas, the exhibit in the Carroll Gallery, complete with a Dickens village, model trains and toys. Add a trip on Santa’s Trolley Ride, complete with stories and songs, or ride with the Ghosts of Christmas Past to complete your weekend. If you miss the MAC tree lighting, you’ll get another chance at Congress Hall on December 4 at 5pm. Congress Hall’s Grand Lawn is transformed into a Winter Wonderland, featuring a shopping village and treats for children. In the Ballroom, the Congress Hall Festival Choir performs at 5:30 and 8pm, and suggested admission is a toy for Toys for Tots or canned goods for the Cape May Food Closet.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I had a breakup shortly before Christmas. We have since gotten back together and the last six months have been wonderful. However, I still get suspicious of his old girlfriend and sometimes I check his phone to see if he has called or texted. She is the reason we broke it off. He continued an unusually close relationship with her, including running over to her house when her father went into the hospital and taking her chicken soup when she had the flu last winter. He says he has since resolved this, maintaining that he is just a nice guy who sometimes can’t say, “no.” There has been no contact with her that I know of, yet whenever I am having a bad day, I notice that my mind turns to these bad thoughts. What can I do? — Suspicious

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Suspicious A healthy concern is never misplaced, particularly since your beau has admitted he has a hard time saying no. I think there is a song by that title, except she was a girl, but I digress… And don’t go all “honesty is the best policy” on him, please. Alerting him to the fact that you don’t completely trust him is not fair to him. Give yourself time and, in so doing, him time to show you he is worthy of your trust. Meanwhile, you definitely need a message to rub out all that negativity which has built up. Cape

May Day Spa is just the ticket — give them a call ASAP. Dear Answer Lady The dreaded Thanksgiving family dinner is coming up and as a vegetarian I resent the fact that I have to sit and pretend to like turkey when I don’t. In fact, this year I am thinking of bringing my own tofu turkey to the gathering. My mother is an excellent cook and never wants any help, especially in the way of food, but I feel I must make a statement. Don’t you agree? — Anti-Turkeyite Dear Anti-Turkeyite There is something wrong with you. No, I don’t agree that you should impose your voluntary diet restrictions on your poor mother. You sit at the table. You do not eat the turkey. You do partake in what I am sure will be a plethora of side dishes which will have nothing to do with meat and you will praise your mother to high heaven for a wonderful meal. If you choose to bring something, go to West Side Market and bring one of their homemade pies to the affair. Something that everyone can enjoy, not just you.

SCOOBY is an 11 year old lab mix whose family was forced to give him up. He is a sweet older dog who walks nicely on the leash and misses the love and affection of a family. As a senior he is beyond the puppy energy level and would love to settle at your feet and go for quiet walks. He appears to be well mannered around cats and dogs.

Bird Droppings

H

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

er name is Peggy, from Tucson. She is in Cape May for her annual week’s birding. This year she rented a condo, some years she uses a motel. One thing is constant, her annual pilgrimage to The Migration Mainline. Peggy is like thousands of late-season visitors to this resort community, drawn as summer visitors are to the Cape’s natural dowry. Unlike summer visitors these autumn visitors are not focused upon beaches, shells on the beach or ocean activities (except for scanning offshore for migrating sea birds). Most are here for the birds that migrate here in vast numbers and have made Cape May North America’s best-known birding destination. The significance of this is magnified by the 47,000,000 people in the US who watch birds and, as evidenced by Peggy, are quite happy to travel great distances multiple times to draw from Cape May’s magic. These thousands of birding visitors have pushed the tourist season two months on the front end of the season and four months on the back. And while they may come with a differ-

ent agenda, they dine and seek lodging like other Cape May visitors. If you want to meet a cross-section of Cape May’s birding clientele, you can visit the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point. That is where they gather to pass their optics along the river of raptors and trade stories about their morning fortune. Fair warning, more than one Cape May resident has been won over by the pleasure and excitement of this popular pastime. It’s a treasure hunt and you live in the Mother Lode,

the Grand Canyon of bird study. It wasn’t always this way. Thirty years ago, birders were few and Cape May’s fame a guarded secret. But even among those in the know, the knowing did not extend beyond September. The protracted nature of migration here was ignored. In 1976, when I conducted the first modern hawk count, there was just one out of town visitor to the hawk watch. She was a retired nurse from Massachusetts who had rented a home in Cape May Point. Many birders end up buying retirement homes here and you’ll meet many of these opportunistic transplants on the hawk watch platform, too. Or you can go on a Cape May Bird Observatory morning walk. So before winter sets in why not go out and savor the bird riches of Cape May. If you see Peggy, tell her I said “Hi.” Pete Dunne, leads Monday morning walks in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to birding every Wednesday 2-4pm at CMBO, 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised — 609-884-2736.
