Ramblings From The Editor
H
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ere’s a not-so-great holiday gift: I recently tested positive for Lyme Disease. Well, sort of positive. (Apparently, Western Blot is a tempermental blood test.) This news is not surprising — I’ve got three dogs, and after long walks through the woods by Higbee Beach, they often bring home ticks, with which I later wrestle. What HAS been surprising? The amount of concern so many of you have expressed over my health. I’ve received calls, texts, emails — and deliveries of homemade chicken soup. This is one of the upsides of living in a small, tight-knit community. Now that I’m feeling better (reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated), I’ve been enjoying that small-town spirit even more than usual. This year, I rode on one of Mrs Claus’ trolleys which took off from the Emlen Physick Estate. I rang jingle bells, sang carols and learned that “Ho, ho, ho” stands for “Help Out.” (Keep that in mind when you write your letters to Santa, kids.) And I watched my five-month-old nephew get almost as excited as the adults on board when we rode
through a decked-out historic district. Then, last Friday, I attended the tree-lighting at Congress Hall which saw double the attendance of last year’s event (yes, it was pretty packed on the Grand Lawn). If a 30-foot tree, holiday choir, and human nutcrackers with red felt cheeks holding the door for you aren’t enough to make you smile, you’re just not trying hard enough. Unfortunately, the West Cape May Christmas Parade happened on a day when I wasn’t feeling up to snuff, so I missed out on this tradition, though from my bedroom I could hear the marching and string bands
(20 this year). New floats included the gang from Cape May Brewing Company — apparently, even the police were disappointed to see there wasn’t any beer on board. Speaking of the brewery, congratulations to co-founder Ryan Krill on his reelection as president of the Garden State Craft Brewers Guild. The guild provides resources to craft breweries who are setting up in Jersey, and contributing to an emerging brewery tourism industry. In 2013, New Jersey was home to about 15 breweries, making this one of the smallest per capita brewing states in America. By the end of this year, it will have about 50, with another 20 expected to open in 2016. Our own CMBC is now the third largest. Good luck to Ryan as he steers this growing ship of hops, yeast and barley. And good luck to all of you, as you navigate the stress of holiday shopping. Don’t forget December 10 and 11 are hospitality nights on this island — the perfect time to support our local merchants. Support is, after all, what makes this town so great. I have the chicken soup to prove it.

The Old Fogey
T
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
welve of you lovely readers will be receiving a very special Christmas gift this year! Can you tell that, as I dictate this, I have a near-empty glass of single malt in my hand, and a slightly glassy look to my eye? Young Albert can, as he cowers shamefully under the stuffed bear (a gift from Roosevelt for services rendered — it’s a ghastly thing with a spiteful cast to its mouth). For he (Young Albert rather than Teddy Roosevelt) is the cause of my stressed state and of my mystery gifts. Because those gifts will not only be a surprise to you: they were somewhat unexpected at the D’Catur Mansion when they were delivered in a basket by an irate lady neighbor. “That tiny devil dog of yours!” she started, thrusting the basket at me, “had his way with my Fifi!” Well, as you may know, I adore dogs, but I must say, the sight of a dozen tiny puppies sired by my Albert was not entirely pleasant. I had no option, though, other than to accept them, as the lady was
off into the night. Well, I was absolutely mortified, I can assure you: I can accept that Young Albert has had his fair share of dalliances, but I paid a traveling vet a tidy sum to ensure that he was shooting something that rhymes with tanks. (Why am I being so circumspect? Well, Young Albert is listening and to this day he thinks that operation was to cure The Mange, and he would be livid if he discovered that I had his Yorkshire-Terrier-hood neutralized.
Or rather I thought I had. All that, though, was rather a case of bolting the stable door after the tiny tumescent dog bolted.) So, I hear you asking: What kind of dog was the mother? Well, that Fifi was a bitch, I can heartily assure you. Aha, just my little canine joke: Permit me that, as an anxious grandfather. No, Fifi, from what I have seen of her on the occasional morning walk, is a fine lady with good teeth and a glossy coat. She is, a little embarrassingly, a large poodle. Now please take your minds out of the gutter and stop that “but how…?” from escaping your lips. I am assuming that the puppies are Yorkshire Toodles. Or Poodorkies. For now, they are puppy-sized, with rather interesting shaggy curly pelts. I would keep one, but am not prepared for a young dog to learn Young Albert’s bad habits. So, over to you, old friends: Lots will be drawn!

The Movie Column
I
Review by Gayle Stahlhuth, Artistic Director, East Lynne Theater
’ve always admired journalists — good ones who track down the details to discover the truth. Many of my favorite playwrights had been reporters at one time. Reading the works of exceptional journalists is as rewarding as picking up a good novel. Look at the reporting in the Times-Picayune when it covered Hurricane Katrina and it’s easy to see why the paper was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. The Boston Globe received its welldeserved Pulitzer Prize in 2003. In 2002, I remember when the paper broke the story about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in Boston, but had no idea how long and involved was the process for getting to the truth, until I attended the New York premiere of Spotlight. All of the journalists and the actors who portrayed them were on hand to take a bow before the film began. Director Tom McCarthy, who co-wrote the screenplay with Josh Singer, creates a believable world with a fine ensemble cast. The pace is steady. It subtly grabs your attention from the beginning, and will not
The reporting team in Spotlight let go. The film’s title comes from the name given a special team at The Globe that takes on difficult and/or unique investigations. It’s headed by editor Walter Robinson, played by Michael Keaton in one of his finest roles. You sense that Keaton is hiding something, and the clues are there to follow, but the reveal is not until the end, and well-worth the wait. The other reporters in the Spotlight team are well played by Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, and Brian d’Arcy James, all at the top of their game, as is John Slattery as
the paper’s managing editor, Ben Bradlee, Jr. Another strong performance is from Liev Schreiber who plays the new editorin-chief, Marty Baron. He was the one who suggested how deep this investigation into the Catholic Church should go, and backs the reporting team 100%. As layer after layer is uncovered in this excellent film, it is revealed that several abused boys had tried to seek help and justice, but they were from poor neighborhoods with no means to hire powerful lawyers. One attorney, Mitchell Garabedian (Stanley Tucci), was trying to help them. Tucci has the right balance of concern and frustration, and his scenes with Ruffalo, who is trying desperately to get the names of those sexually abused from Tucci, are exceptional. You know why Ruffalo wants those names and you know why Tucci doesn’t want to give them up. “It takes a village to raise a child. It takes a village to abuse one,” says Tucci to Ruffalo.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I want my mother to start dating men her own age, not mine. It’s embarrassing. I have to constantly tell people she’s my mother, not my sister. Do you think I should sign her up for one of those 50-plus dating sites? I hesitate to introduce her to my own boyfriends, although I must say, she has never made a move that way. But the potential is always there. Nor am I interested in “double dating” as she is always suggesting. What should I do? – Overly Competitive Dear Overly Competitive Who is that you think is overly competitive — you or your mother? You need to take a chill pill. It’s none of your business who your mother dates, unless you think she is being abused or mistreated. In fact, it seems she’s pretty happy and not at all interested in your men. The
Wise answers to perplexing questions
“double dating” suggestion is a bit over the top, at least in the first stages of dating. Breathe and heal this wound by inviting her to a weekend of fun. Go over to Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland and get back in touch with your inner child. Ride the merry-go-round and have a cup of hot chocolate. And be happy that she isn’t some doddering, out-of-touch, old biddy. The future bodes better for you 20 years from now as a result. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I are in a heated argument
about adopting a dog. We are both dog people and vowed to add a pup to our family following our first anniversary, which is coming up in a week or two. But we have hit a snag. She insists on adopting a chocolate lab and I want a golden retriever and never the twain shall meet. She grew up with labs and my family always had goldens. How do we resolve this argument? — Wagging Tail Dear Wagging The Answer Lady has the perfect solution to this dilemma — the Cape May County Adoption Shelter which lists pooches looking for a loving home in Exit Zero EVERY week. This is the perfect opportunity for you to look for a dog so in need of a home and you are the perfect couple to make that happen. Furthermore, you can settle on a dog, not a breed, that you both like instead of wasting time arguing about which breed is better. The Answer Lady can assure you, when you come home with your adoptee, the love you will both feel and receive from your good will, will help you ring in the New Year with spirit of the season.

RUPERT is a handsome, two year old, pit bull terrier mix. He is smart and a top student in the shelter’s training program. ince 1979 Peter Leonard Plumbing & Heating Inc. has been committed to serving the Cape May area. After 37 years I will be closing my business as of December 31, 2015. Many of you have been with us our entire 37 years. It is for that reason I have mixed emotions about retiring, but it has to happen. I want to personally thank you for your trust and patronage over these many years. I hope that you will continue to put your trust and confidence in Matt Abel of Matt Abel Plumbing & Heating LLC (state license #36BI01280200), who will be absorbing the Leonard Plumbing & Heating phone number, 609-884-1742, after December 31, 2015. Matt has been with us for many years and is a fine Master Plumber. I hope you will continue to call him for your plumbing needs as he knows your home and property. Also, Carl Nash (Buzz as many of you know him) has agreed to continue doing your turn-ons and turn-offs and light service work under a Home Improvement License. His phone # is 609-889-1488. I have always put my trust in his expertise in these matters and hope you will also. Once again, I want to personally thank all our valued customers for your years of loyalty and good relationships established. Any questions, my offcie can be reached at 609-884-1742 until December 31, and at 609-884-4385 after January 1, 2016.
Sincerely Pete Leonard

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
f you live on the coast, you probably take gulls for granted — as expected as shells on the beach, which is no coincidence. Gulls are active foraging species and mollusks deposited on the beach by wave action are grist for their mill. Somewhat nomadic in winter, they go where the food is. A winter storm, one that deposits a surfeit of clams and conch on the beach soon draws a hungry crowd. You know this. What you may not know is that the dominant gull on the beach is the herring gull, the most common and widespread gull in North America. Herring gulls go through seven plumage stages on their way to adulthood (gray and white birds). Younger birds are mostly brown. Observers really only need to focus upon juvenile and adult plumages to distinguish herring gulls from great blacked, lesser black-backed and ring-billed. Why bother to distinguish them at all? Good question. Even many experienced bird-watchers commonly do not. The plumages of the large “white-headed gulls” overlap in colors and

pattern. When in doubt, just call it a herring gull, in winter the default gull around here. The fascinating thing is that half a century ago, the birds were anything but common, almost wiped out by plume hunters in the late 19th century. The North American population may be at an all-time high. The birds breed in large colonies on elevated ground near open water. Spoil piles are ideal and the spoil pile on Nummy Island, south of Stone Harbor, supports a thriving colony which feeds upon fish and inverte-

brates, including the bait used by fishermen trying to catch striped bass, which is what prompted this article. One day, I noted several gulls helping themselves to the contents of a fisherman’s bait bucket. His consternation led him to accuse his partner of stealing. It wasn’t until the man saw a young gull bury his head in the container that peace was restored. Another common coastal gull is ringbilled, which breed on the Great Lakes and winter along the Atlantic coast unless they find a chicken nugget-rich parking lot inland. But this time of year you will not see blackheaded laughing gull. Firstly, adult laughing gulls molt their black heads in August; secondly, most spend the winter south of New Jersey, not returning until March. Pete Dunne, leads Monday morning walks in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to birding every Wednesday 2-4pm at CMBO, 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point.
