Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Diane Zih of Spotswood, New Jersey. How long have you been coming to Cape May? For over 25 years. Who are you normally with? My husband Ernie and daughter Amanda. My daughter Christie got married there last year. Favorite thing about Cape May? Sunset Beach, seeing familiar faces as I shop in my favorite stores, and the Exit Zero Store. Least favorite thing? Leaving! Favorite restaurants? The Lobster House, Harpoon Henry’s, C-View for wings, and Marq’s Pub for Sunday taco night. Favorite place to stay? We keep our camper at Holly Shores all season, and we love it. At Christmas, our gift to one another is a weekend at the Luther Ogden Inn. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would allow dogs on the beach in-season again. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? It helps me stay in touch, and it keeps the spirit of Cape May alive. Thanks, also, for the shelter column that allowed us to adopt our beagles! Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? When issues come late because of post office delays. What’s your T-shirt size? Large, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Quotes Of The Week

“I’m not feeling very well - I need a doctor immediately. Ring the nearest golf course.” — Groucho Marx “For me, the worst part of playing golf has always been hitting the ball. — Dave Barry “Golf is a day spent in a round of strenuous idleness.” — William Wordsworth

Random Factoid

MINIGOLF was founded in the 1860s for women, since it was considered improper for a member of the fairer sex to raise a club above her shoulders. The first course was the Ladies’ Putting Club in Scotland. I’ts now known as one of the “most prestigious greens on the British Isles.”

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Broken-Down Golf Cart IF YOU’RE like us, you think the best part about an afternoon on the golf course is riding in the golf cart. (One of our staffers once tried convincing the General Manager of the Virginia Hotel to take her on a joyride around town in the Cape Resorts cart, but no dice.) And no day out on the links would be complete without a refreshing drink, and we think this one is a hole-in-one. (Sorry.)

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Stewart’s Lose License WE WERE curious to hear the outcome of the administrative hearing that took place on Monday regarding Stewart’s Root Beer on the Washington Street Mall. If you’ve been following this story, you know that Stewart’s is allowed to operate with 48 seats per their mercantile liscence, issued on May 8, but the business has spent the summer operating with a heck of a lot more than that... 113 seats, to be exact. This is the number that Code Enforcement Officer John Queenan counted during an inspection on June 18, and again on July 13. During another visit in August — despite two notices of violation being handed out and two summonses issued — Queenan found the seat number, 90, was still too high. According to Section 525-49E of the City Code Book, if a restaurant wants to increase its seating, it must pay into something called the Parking Account Trust Fund at a rate of $5,000 for every four additional seats. It’s something other business owners on the mall have done — or opted not to do because it would be cost prohibitive. And these business owners are understandably peeved. Why shouldn’t everyone, they’ve said, be made to follow the same rules? We’ve heard it suggested that Stewart’s owner Patrick Rosenello, president of the North Wildwood Council, has enough political weight to explain what some call a delay in enforcement. And we’ve also heard from Cape May’s City Manager Bruce MacLeod that the city has, in fact, followed the correct procedure: a court date was set for August 28, he told us. But at that hearing, Stewart’s was fined only $600 for violating the mer-

cantile license regulations — a punishment, some said, that didn’t fit the crime. But then, a day later, an administrative hearing was held, during which City Clerk Louise Cummiskey decided to revoke Stewart’s mercantile license. The charges? “Fraud or misrepresentation in any application and operation of the licensed premises in violation of state or city land use provisions.” Which brings us to Monday’s hearing: the appeal of Stewart’s in front of council, who ultimately decided to uphold Cummiskey’s decision (eliciting cheers from the crowd). Representing the city was Marian Ragusa, a Middle Township prosecutor sitting in for City Solicitor Tony Monzo, because of a conflict of interest. Representing Stewart’s — and joined by Rosenello’s partner, Sean Dougherty — was William Kaufman. In the audience were 18 attendees, most of them local business owners, who cheered when the final decision came through. We wondered what leg the defense even had to stand on. After all, Dougherty himself testified that Stewart’s had been operating with 92 seats during the first administrative hearing, according to Cummiskey’s report. And at this appeal hearing, we listened to the city’s witness, John Queenan, relay each count he’d conducted. So... what’s to debate? Stewart’s has, by their own admission, been operating outside of the law. “You can only commit fraud in an application at the time you submit it to the city clerk,” Kaufman said. “May 8 is the only date that is important.” Whether or not Queenan found there to be too many seats on a subsequent day, he explained is irrelevant;

it doesn’t prove that Stewart’s comitted fraud. “Did they have more seats after May 8?” Kaufmas asked council, “I don’t know. Maybe. But if that’s the issue, they should have been charged with something else... not fraud on the application... they’ve tried to be a good neighbor.” It’s a pretty shaky argument, we think. If the regulations set forth in a licencing application only apply for one day... what’s the point of them? “What’s being suggested is an absurd reading,” Ragusa responded, and council agreed. At one point, Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, took a jab at Kaufman. “This is the good neighbor?” he asked. We don’t think Stewart’s has been the most neighborly either, but it looks like they might get a second chance. We called Cummiskey, who told us that Stewart’s will be able to reapply for a mercantile license, and that it is possible they could receive it.

It Takes A Village WITH Halloween just over a month away, people are beginning to think about who they’d like to be this year, on the one night when it’s acceptable for most adults to dress as princesses and pirates. But for the staff at Historic Cold Spring Village on Route 9, being in costume — and in character — is a part of daily life... daily life as it was between 1789 and 1840. We stopped by this past weekend — Civil War Weekend — for a look into the village, its 26 restored historic buildings, and the interpreters who bring it to life. We spent 15 minutes strolling through the 30 shaded acres, just enjoying the secluded beauty of the place (and the smell

Thursday, September 20, 2012 to support her soldier during battle. “We’ve performed a lot of places,” Jon Mark said, “but there’s something particularly special about doing it in an actual 19th century village. Earlier, we did a skit where we stole a loaf of bread from the bakery. People asked if it was ‘real’ bread we were eating, as opposed to, I don’t know, plastic bread? They want to know if this fire or that baby are real, too. Of course they are. They’re pleasantly surprised by how real it all is.” Real indeed. We were among the “pleasantly surprised,” and we’re willing to bet you will be, too.

It Was Raining Men

Phil Peterson wowed the ladies with his, uh, winning smile at the Fourth Annual Bachelor Auction Aleksey Moryakov

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 of pumpkin cheesecake wafting from the bakery), before popping in to see the basket maker, a woman by the name of Gail Donaghy. She was busy weaving flat reeds with willow to make a basket, otherwise known as a 19th century purse. It was a beautiful purple color, Gail told us, because she’d soaked the materials first in blueberry juice, just as they would have done during the age of homespun. “I applied for a job collecting tickets,” Gail told us. “But they had an opening for a basket maker and, turns out, most people who work here start out making baskets.” And turns out, it’s a rewarding job, with lots of opportunity for meeting fascinating passersby. “This weekend,” Gail told us, “I met a couple from Lithuania. Her family were basket makers there before mechanization put them out of business.” From here, we made our way past the three kids with their heads in the Guillotine, through the Country Store where worker Wendy Taylor showed us a 19th century checker board complete with corn husk checkers, and toward the minstrel band, the Camptown Shakers, breaking it down Civil War style. Percussionist King Bennet showed us his donkey jawbone instrument (rubbing the teeth of a donkey’s mouth with wood makes a pleasing sound... who knew?)

“It’s about $80,” King said. From there, it was on to the tent of Mike Kochan who, dressed as a Confederate Army engineer, gave us a rundown on some of the “improvised explosives used in the war between the states.” Think bombs disguised as pieces of coal or concealed in boxes marked “candles.” Our favorite part was the “19th centry texting” – AKA sending of telegraphs — that Mike let us try. “They hired teenagers to do it during the war,” he said, “because they were better at it then, just like they are today.” In the home of the yarn spinner, we met local ninth-grader Matt MacFeat, who was busy getting a lesson on the spinning wheel. “This is pretty cool,” he said. And then he gave us this tidbit: “Today is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam.” (This is why you should bring a ninth-grader with you everywhere you go). He also told us that the Union had gotten its “butt kicked” in a battle reenactment earlier this day, so we figured we’d go straight to the source: the Confederate butt-kickers. On our way out of the Village, we ran into a sexy real-life couple — Grace Wright and Jon-Mark Grussenmeyer — who told us they met at a “Civil War ball.” Now, they play a Confederate couple at various reinactments — he with a musket in tow and she with her corset tied so that it doesn’t cut off her oxygen and, ultimately, her ability

WHO says there aren’t enough decent bachelors in Cape May? Okay, a lot of people, your reporter — sadly — among them. But the Fourth Annual King Neptune Bachelor Auction, sponsored by the Mermaid Guild and held at the (packed) Rusty Nail on Sunday, proves us wrong. Well, sort of... many of the 15 men for sale this night were bachelor imposters — attached guys who are more into helping a great cause (proceeds from this event benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey) than looking for ladies. But they were there nonetheless, many of them shirtless, one of them more oiled than a Baywatch lifeguard, and all of them eliciting hoots and take-it-off hollers from an eager crowd of extrememly pleased women, your reporter not-so-sadly among them. We got to speak with a couple of the handsome guys to find out how they were feeling before the show began. “What’s to worry about?” said Michael Kline of the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival. “I’m cheap and easy.” The lucky lady to take him home, we learned, would walk away with Friday night Producers Passes to the jazz festival, with backstage access. But not all the men were as nonchalant as Michael about their quickly approaching time on stage. RJ Peck — Bachelor Number 10 whose hunky promo photo had created quite the stir online, prompting one Facebook friend to write, “I’m clearing out my Swiss accounts!” — was drinking a Red Bull and vodka when we saw him... and he gave up drinking last year. “I’ve got to take the edge off,” he told us. “My mom signed me up for this!” (Sure, sure, RJ. We checked with your mom, the lovely Christine Peck, and she told us that all she did was “suggest” it to you. Nice try.) And Christine wasn’t the only proud mamma there. A bow-tied barista/Cabanas

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 server by the name of Matt Reeves told us his mother was prepared to kick off his own bidding, “in case things go poorly.” About this time, the night’s MCs — Teresa Henry and Yogi Kurtz — took their place on stage to announce Bachelor Number One, Doug Ortlip of Tiny Cruise Line. His date? A boat trip for eight “adventurous” women to include a Champagne toast. “It’s not about the size of your ship,” we read from Doug’s T-shirt as he presented each of his bidders with a flower lay. Going once, going twice, and sold for $500! Exit Zero photographer Aleksey Moryakov was also a highlight. His date — a beach portrait for three OR a racy boudoir photo session — went to the beautiful Betty Moffatt. Which will she choose? Aleksey seems to think it will be the boudair session, which Betty will likely kill us for putting in print. “I didn’t think anyone would want me,” Aleks told us. “I’m a married guy with a baby! But I was happy that quite a few women bid on me.” And they bid on him, we’d like to note, despite his having danced for them on stage. (Sorry, Aleks.) Other highlights? Robert Young, offer-

ing a five-course wine pairing dinner at Beach Creek Grill, turned up in some very dapper attire. “He owns a suit,” said the woman in front of us, “and that counts for something.” But it didn’t take Robert long to start discarding pieces of this outift, prompting another spectator to say, “He’s making me blush!” Your MCs warned that Rob would not undo so much as one more button, until someone bid $650, and that’s exactly what happened. Then there was Nikos Goutzouris, Manager and Director of Operations at George’s Place, who reached his hands down his pants to pull out a bottle of oil on stage, which he promptly used to lather himself, with a little help from an eager audience participant. We asked successful bidder Joni Remmel which of Nikos’ dates she’d be choosing — the skydiving option or the the let-Nikos-clean-your-house-in-hisunderwear-option — and she said neither. “We’ll do something not related,” she told us. Oh, reeeally? (Nothing dirty, folks, just a

good, old-fashioned night on the town!) We’d be remiss if we didn’t send our congratulations to RJ (remember our sexy, Red Bull-drinking bachelor who was so nervous?). Two women bid on him at the same time, bringing in a whopping $1,300 for the FoodBank. (The MCs only spotted the one high bid, RJ says, so he offered his six-hours-worth-of-landscaping date to each hopeful contestant.) “I’m so proud that so many people came out to support such a good cause,” RJ told us. Our thoughts, exactly. Thanks to all the generous men who made such a special night for so many Cape May women, and thanks also to the Mermaid Guid of Cape May for putting on yet another successful event. (The Mermaids were still calculating final numbers when we checked, but in year’s past, the auction has raised over $20,000. Let’s just say it will be another hefty contribution to the FoodBank.) Until next time, happy dating, Cape May!

It promises to be a great day for a great cause. For details, email chad@liferollson.org.

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

Y

OU can exhale now; I’m growing my beard back. Bushier than Christy Canyon circa 1983. Okay, so, here’s where it gets tricky. Exit Zero is a Cape May-based magazine. I have not lived in Cape May since 2003 as the size of my apartments decreased in direct correlation to how much more expensive they got, then kids, you need a yard, so you buy a house in Erma. Nor do I currently work in Cape May now that my karaoke contract with Congress Hall has expired (I’m really going to miss those Congress Hall gigs… it was the best toilet paper I used all week). And where I do work, the untamed biosphere known as Wildwood, may as well be four planets, not four exits away. What’s the tricky part you might ask? Shush, I might answer, I’m getting there… Living in Erma and working in Wildwood in not entirely conducive to writing gripping, Cape May-based news items, gossip and other flotsam. But as I have now written 147 words on the process of writing, which is 147 words more than my bosses at Exit Zero can stand, I will leave it at this; I’ll keep writ-

ing crap for as long as you continue to read it. And hopefully, together, we can come up with enough crap to keep me around past Thanksgiving. Anniversary of the Week: Okay, it’s not actually until next year, but you can start your planning now — May 23, 2013 will mark my 20th anniversary of moving to Cape May. I would like a parade. Second-Best Karaoke Host in the World FillingIn for the First-Best Karaoke Host in the World (Of Course, “Best” is Completely Subjective) of the Week: Throughout the month of October, DJ Jimmy J. (or the Right Reverend James J, as I like to call him) will be covering my Friday nights at Rio Station while I oversee the theatrical con-

tent (costumes, make-up, acting) of Morey’s FEARS. Jimmy and I worked together for a while, and while it didn’t work out in the end, we’ve managed to divide the Karaoke Territories between us. Or, as my father said to me as a child, “Everything the light touches is our kingdom. The rest belong to Jimmy J.” So go see him on Fridays in October. We’d both appreciate it. Speaking of the Rio, it was nice to see a Ghost Ship contingent again on a Friday night (I usually have them rowing the oars til 1am on Fridays), as Mikey Alimo aka Mikey Vengeance aka Cry About it on Facebook, Dave Kehner, Paul Nepi, Brittany Burns, Tyna Fontannaz and honorary Ghost Shipper Taffy Flynn (look, I don’t name ’em…) hung out after work. Mikey is one of the few singers in the area, and probably the world, who likes to start his night with Beastie Boyes and end it with Katy Perry. Dave Kehner is… Kehner’s a good guy. Tyna Fontannaz melts the windows with her powerful vocals. And Brittany Burns, who was brave enough to go to Canada for three weeks this summer on a theater

internship, could barely muster the courage to sing “A Whole New World” with me. Karaoke makes strange bedfellows. Back to Morey’s FEARS for a moment; to the many who have asked, yes, it really is a cool event, with four haunted walkthroughs, a bunch of rides, roaming zombies and all kinds of food and beverage. Considering you pay about $50 for one attraction at, like, say, Eastern State Penitentiary (whom I consider not an ally, but not an enemy), at FEARS you get four for $30. Plus the rides. So it’s really a good value. And as anyone who attended last year can tell you, the Moreys never do anything halfway. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. And when you love it, tell my bosses. I need a raise. Bought a bottle of Head & Shoulders in May. Just finished it Wednesday. Laugh if you want, but you’re the idiots spending $100s and $1,000s of dollars on your hair every year. Facebook Post of the Week: From family friend Heather Grillo: “The good news; my BP is way down since I restricted caffeine. The bad news; so is my IQ.” Speaking of IQ... my wife likes to keep the cell charger in a little area next to our stove. The result? Four cooked phones in three years. What’s the definition of insanity again? Though in her defense, they do taste better than her pork chops. (Holy WOW… I am doomed.) Apology of the Week: To my wife. By the time this goes to print I will be nearly 10 months McDonald’s-free, and fast food-free in general (one transgression; a chicken salad sandwich at Hates Gay People… I mean Chik-Fil-A, which I don’t think really counts). How do I do it? Easy. Work seven days a week, 12 hours a day, and don’t go to McDonald’s. Royalty Check of the Week: $112.56 for Murder-Oke, marking a sixth straight monthly increase. Think about that a second. Exactly how low does one’s royalty check have to START to be up to $112 in six months?

Lunch of the Week: Took the family to Stewart’s Root Beer on the mall last week. I understand there is some legal brouhaha surrounding them and the ridiculous number of seats they have, but I am not a lawyer, I just know a good chili cheese dog when I have one, and I had one there. One question: Why were the two oldest servers (two very nice ladies who were very accomodating) working upstairs and all the teeny-boppers downstairs? I, thankfully, got out of the service industry a decade ago because the kids I worked with were spoiled brats who wouldn’t know a hard day’s work if it bit them in the ass. But I reiterate, the chilicheese dog was good. Lunch of the Week II: It’s not overly fancy, but we’ve become big fans of Little Italy II’s new pizzeria in North Cape May (across from the Wawa); solid cheese steaks and hoagies, excellent pizza which, if you go in for lunch, will cost you less than $30 for a family of five. Little Italy II is now and always has been vastly underrated, getting lost amid the fussier places in Cape May, and always delivers a solid meal with their homemade bread and pasta. And I’d now put their deli/ take-out spot up with the best of them. We’ll be back. Often. If you’ve seen the trailer for Brian DePalma’s Passion you know that we FINALLY have our Brokeback Mountain! And by “we” I mean straight men. And lesbians. Rachel MacAdams (The Notebook) and Noomi Rapace (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Swedish version)? Yes please. Lastly, I implore my Christian friends to not storm any embassies or kill any ambassadors as a result of being mercilessly mocked in, let’s see… EVERY movie and TV show for the last 15 years. Please try to exercise restraint and don’t have your religious feelings hurt. Because we all know it’s not a complete crock of shit to use a cheaply, badly made movie as a pretext to attack American interests on September 11. Mormons, we’re watching you, too. Until next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

OPEN DAILY YEAR ROUND

«

JUNIOR Gabriella McKeown, the oldest daughter of Jennifer and John McKeown of North Cape May, has already proven to be a dominating force for the Lady Tigers varsity soccer team. McKeown racked up a hat trick in the Tigers’ season opener versus Buena Regional High School. With 32 career goals already under her belt, she has high hopes for her team this year, aiming to win the Cape Atlantic League conference and qualify for the state playoffs. One of McKeown’s goals is to motivate her teammates along the way. “Don’t get down on yourself; every sport is mental,” said McKeown, who, in her role as captain of the squad, hopes to guide the new freshman additions to the team. As a midfielder and striker, McKeown dreams of playing in the Olympics or professionally in the near future. With scholarship offers from Boston University and Iona College, as well as interest from the University of Pennsylvania, she aspires to play soccer at the Division I level and obtain a degree in the History of Architecture or Art. East Lynne Stages A Mad Romp

N

Screwball comedy “It Pays to Advertise” opened this week

INETY-SEVEN percent of the public believe what they’re told, and what they’re told is what the other chap’s been told — and the fellow who told him read it somewhere,” announces marketing maven Ambrose Peale to would-be businessman Rodney Martin in It Pays to Advertise. The Equity professional East Lynne Theater Company presents this screwball comedy through October 13, with an 8:00pm curtain. It is the usual Wednesday through Saturday schedule, except there is no show on Wednesday, October 3, and an added show on Sunday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday, September 19 is an after-show opening night party at Aleathea’s Restaurant at The Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street, where patrons have the opportunity to mingle with actors and fellow theater lovers while indulging in complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Written by Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter C. Hackett, It Pays to Advertise was a Broadway hit that was twice made into a movie: a silent in 1919, and in 1931 with Carole Lombard. The premise — and promise —

The cast of It Pays to Advertise: back, Glen Corlin, Tom Byrn, Phil Pizzi, and Thomas Raniszewski. Front: John Cameron Weber, Kate Shine, Matt Baxter Luceno, and Maria Silverman that anything can be sold is at its core, but it also examines the very nature and romance of advertising. Decades before AMC’s Mad Men, it demonstrates that an ad campaign might be better than the product. All it takes is one adventurous young man to announce, “Advertising is responsible for everything!”

and he and his two friends are off and running in this mad romp. The performances are at The First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $30, $25 for seniors, and $15 for full-time students. Call (609) 884-5898 or visit www.eastlynnetheater.org.

The Movie Column

A

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

UDIENCES and critics nationwide have been wowed by Beasts of the Southern Wild, and we’re proud to say that one of Cape May County’s own has played an integral part in that success — producer Chris Carroll is a Middle Township native. Unfortunately, Chris will be on location at another movie shoot during the upcoming Cape May Film Festival, so we will likely reschedule a local screening of his wonderful film later this year, or early next year. Beasts of the Southern Wild tells the story of Hushpuppy, a small girl living in a ramshackle island town affectionately called The Bathtub by locals because it is so given to f looding. She lives in her own run-down space, a trailer of sorts that sits perched high off the ground. Her father lives in another shack next door. He can often be seen wandering the dirt roads of town either inebriated or in a gown from a recent stint at the local hospital. The story unfolds as the town prepares for f looding. There are those who are ada-

The indie film Beasts of the Southern Wild was produced by Middle Township native, Chris Carroll mant to stay (sound familiar, Cape May? We can ask Chris if he got inspiration from some of our locals who show the same tenacity!). Hushpuppy and her father stay, surviving in their boat which is really a makeshift ship fashioned from an old truck bed. The film follows Hushpuppy’s quest to live a fulfilled life in a failed town. She must ultimately face the demons that roam her life like the wild boars that roam the

region — demons staring at both her and her father. The film is beautifully shot with compelling images of a poor, dilapidated town and neighborhood. The acting is brilliant, with Hushpuppy played by Quvenzhané Wallis and her father, Wink, played by Dwight Henry. Both actors are newcomers in the strictest sense — this film would be their first chance at making their careers. The same is true for Ben Zeitlen as director and co-screenwriter, a newcomer with few credits. The storytelling is beautifully subtle, and the dialogue is sparse and poignant. This film will likely get noticed by Oscar, or at least it should. This is not an easy movie to watch, as it depicts a hard life with little relief from suffering, but it is an important film to watch for its beauty and ultimately its focus on the human condition seen through a child’s eyes. Visit capemayfilm.org to learn more about how you can sponsor or buy tickets to the 2012 Cape May Film Festival, October 19-21 at the Chalfonte Hotel.

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ID you know that golf was invented in Cape May? Well, strictly speaking it was invented in the trenches of WW1, but by none other than my good self, so it’s the same thing, really. And Cape May IS home to the world’s oldest and most exclusive golf club. I recall we had perfected the art of whacking a grenade with a stick, and back then, a hole-in-one was celebrated not with drinks in the clubhouse but a rain of enemy body parts and machine gun fire. We started off with just any old stick, but soon began to perfect certain shapes and styles. I had my favorite: the whittled-down stock of a prized Lee Enfield rif le. I could send a grenade a good 100 yards with enough accuracy to land it right on the spike of an enemy helmet. Well, when the war was finally over, the Somme Golfing and Artillery Club came home, too, and once de-liced and over our shell shock, we were ready to resume play. We had had enough of explosions and dismemberment, of course, plus live gre-

nades were hard to come by in peacetime, and so decided to soften the game a touch. We started small, mind you: we had one hole, and the tee was atop Congress Hall Hotel, to give extra range. Balls were made from ivory: it was the perfect solution to my own ivory stocks, as I had not long renounced elephant hunting as evil, and had the embarrassment of 20 tons of the stuff in the basement. Soon, though, the sport caught on and before you knew it, we had expanded to 10, then a dozen, then 100 and finally 1,500 holes.

If you look at old photographs of Cape May, you will see that in every one, there is a small swathe of lawn and several gents and ladies in plus-four pants and patterned Argyll socks, and that passersby all walked with a slight hunch, as if expecting a blow to the head at any time. This was smart behavior, as in summertime up to 50,000 golfers were in play at any one time, each using up to 10 balls in a game. I remember on a typical day having as many as six shots rebound off another ball in mid-air, and the vibrations from all of the club-on-ball strikes would cause ripples on the surface of a chap’s malt in the glass. Still, all good things come to an end, and mini golf took over as Cape May’s main sport, to my dismay. With it came an inf lux of Wildwooders and rogues (often in the same package), and I retired. Of course, I maintain a simple ninehole course in the Mansion grounds, and a box of grenades for the occasional midnight nostalgia hole-in-one.

Last week, Congress awarded this man a Congressional Gold Medal. He’s won 62 PGA tour events. He also shares his name with a particularly refreshing drink. 2 . The smooth grass used for putting greens is ____ grass. As in, “Don’t get ____ out of shape.” 3. In the 1996 film Happy Gilmore, golf star Adam Sandler brawls with this veteran game show host. 6. We call it mini golf; Britain, says __ golf. 8. John Daly became an overnight sensation in the PGA championship. He’s also responsible for the creation of a new

golf mantra: “Grip it and ___ it.” 9. This man famously sued the Professional Golf Association when they declined to let him use a cart, despite a rare circulatory disorder that made walking eighteen holes excruciating. 11. This pro — “the bear” — was dubbed “washed up” until 1986 when, with his son as caddy, he pulled a back nine rally to secure his 18th major... and a tear-jerking one, at that. 14. In 2000, he became the youngest to win the British Open title. He’s also won the Lousy Husband title. 16. The first golf balls were made of thin leather stuffed with these. 17. This golf term was originally snagged from Stock Exchange lingo. 18. This 1996 film, starring Kevin Costner and Rene Russo, tells the story of a washed-up golf pro who uses his sport to win the girl. 23. What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? I’m Jake Williams and this is Shannon Hess, from Ardmore, Pennsylvania. We’ve been together for one year and three months. How did you meet? Friends of friends introduced us. What were you doing when we interrupted you? Playing games at the arcade! We’re hoping to win some quarters for the parking meters. Do you have any plans for later? We’re going to the beach of course! It’s Exit Zero’s golf issue. Are you a fan? I love golf. I like the peace and quiet and being close to nature. I was actually planning on looking for a course today. Interview by Gabi Urda PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady After months (okay — years) of being unable to find a man, I have FINALLY agreed to be set up on a blind date. I trust the judgment of the friend who is setting it up (mostly), but I’m also really apprehensive. Is this really a good idea? Can these things work out? Have you ever been on a blind date? Throw me a bone — Freaking Out Dear Freaking, Please, dear, let us settle ourselves, we will accomplish nothing in a blind panic. (On the other hand, “blind panic” is the state in which the Answer Lady leaves the house each day, and she is usually fed and quite often completely dressed, so it can be a motivator.) But the Answer Lady digresses. Yes, this is a good idea — after all, you’ve said yourself you’ve been at this for years with no success.

What’s the worst that could happen? Actually, the Answer Lady can answer that, as she went on a blind date once — to a wedding, no less. If there’s anything worse than going to a wedding with a stranger, it’s attending the wedding of two strangers with a stranger. A DRY wedding, to boot, and this was in the Answer Lady’s drinking days, so she quickly solved that problem by hijacking the entire table and repairing to the nearest saloon for pitchers of beer, billiards and darts, but that is a story for another day.

Cycle on over for some Great Deals!

Was there a happy ending? Did the Answer Lady ride off into the sunset (even once) with her blind date? Sadly, no — he turned out to be a bit of a stalker in the end, but the Answer Lady digresses once again. She suggests you meet your date at a crowded, fun place — say, The C-View Inn on Wing Night, perhaps. The window in the ladies room there is tough to wiggle out of, but it can be done. At least, that is what the Answer Lady has heard. Dear Answer Lady My fiancé and I met on the internet. We are madly in love and can’t wait to get married, but it’s kind of awkward explaining it to people who don’t know us well when they ask how we met. Online dating still has a bit of a stigma, after all. Should we tell the truth, or make up a little white lie? — White Lie or Red Face Dear Face, The Answer Lady has friends who met at a viewing, so… fret not. And if you’re going to make up a white lie, make it a doozy — something like: “I was climbing out the bathroom window at The C-View and I fell on him,” perhaps?

The Ultimate Cape May Activity Guide

Whether you want family fun, or a romantic night out, you will find the answer in here... get reading!

The grounds of Cape May National Golf Club include a beautiful 50-acre bird sanctuary. Go work on your swing, then check out the other fun outings listed below...

C

APE May isn’t just a beach; it’s so much more than surf and sand. Not sure where to start? You’re in luck: we have assembled a complete guide to Cape May activities. Even locals might find something new. Plus, there are rainy day ideas, marked with a . Enjoy! FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and handson activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier

when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. Tidelands Eco-Tour Board the Osprey to learn about the rich history of Cape May’s waterways, like the creation of Cape Island, the dredging of the harbor, South Cape May, fishing fleets, the various features along the harbor, the Nature Center of Cape May, the Corinthian Yacht Club and more. The Osprey is conveniently located at the Miss Chris Marina. Offered at 10am, 1:30 and 6pm daily, with a 1-hour 4pm harbor cruise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Adults $23, kids $15, children six and under free. Call (609) 898-3500 for reservations or more information. 3. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town (kind of like this one!), then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping

at the outlets. No matter what you choose once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales on your way. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. The First Resort Exhibit  The First Resort by author Ben Miller is the basis for this exhibit sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. “Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of The First Resort” brings to life the key turning point in Cape May’s 20th century history. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org. 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off

Page 86 Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 8980055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour  Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Tours at 7:45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of August. Limited tour. $10 for adults, $7 for children. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 7. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt Discover the fun of exploring Cool Cape May and uncovering its irresistible architectural elements from a kid’s perspective. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a self-guided discovery tour. Packets for the entire family are available for $5. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit

Thursday, September 20, 2012 www.capemaymac.org. 8. Lunch with the Pirates Lads, lasses, buccaneers and landlubbers are invited to the Carriage House Tearoom & Café located at the Physick Estate for a pirate-themed lunch experience as pirates invade the tearoom and commandeer the show. $18 for adults, $10 for children and includes lunch. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 9. Cape May Lighthouse, Oil House and Museum Shop The lighthouse, built in 1859, has 199 steps leading to the watch gallery for a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape and Atlantic Ocean. The Museum Shop carries souvenirs, books, videos and other maritime items. Admission to the Visitors Orientation Center and the ground floor of the lighthouse is free. Tower admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 10. Queen Victoria Gardens Tour Stroll through the wonderfully preserved, beautiful gardens around the four buildings of the Queen Victoria, a renowned bed-andbreakfast in the heart of the Historic District on a self-guided tour. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Admission is $7 and includes a booklet that

describes the plants found in numbered areas throughout the property. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 11. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm This one’s hard to believe, but Cape May has an alpaca farm. Near the end of beautiful New England Road, Warren and Barbara Nuessle live what they call the “alpaca lifestyle” — quiet and simple. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas.comfor more information. 12. Combination Trolley/Physick Estate Tour  First of all, hop on this guided trolley tour of Cape May’s Historic District, then enjoy a tour of its only Victorian house museum, the Emlen Physick Estate, located at 1048 Washington Street. Admission also includes the Carriage House Gallery, and the tour lasts about two hours. Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for children. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

It runs through Wildwood Crest, where the Doo Wop-style hotels of Wildwood are a block away, and Stone Harbor. Or why not explore Cumberland County, home to bald eagles and to Port Norris, the one-time oyster capital of the world? Make sure you don’t miss the A.J. Activity Of The Week

Y

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Dragon Boat Races

OU’VE tried the kayak, you’ve tried the canoe — now try the Dragon Boat. The First Annual Dragon Boat Festival, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May, will be held on October 13, 2012 from 9am to 5pm at Cape May Harbor. Chinese Dragon Boat races and ceremonies date back more than 2000 years. Legend has it that the dragon-shaped boats commemorate an attempt to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan, who drowned himself after being banished by the emperor. Villagers took to their boats to try to save him, and when that failed, they threw rice into the water so the fish would eat the rice instead of the poet’s body. The body was never found, and rumors spread that a water dragon had carried the poet away. On the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar, dragon boat races and zongzi, traditional packets of rice, still commemorate Chu Yuan’s sacrifice. The Cape May event will be held on the thirteenth day of the tenth month of the

The First Annual Dragon Boat Festival will take place on October 13 at Cape May Harbor American calendar, and will be organized by a dragon boat company accustomed to dealing with novice paddlers. Dragon boat club 22Dragons provides boats, vests, timers and paddles, and Cape May provides the teams. The Cape May Chamber of Commerce charges $1,000 per team, and $50 for individual rowers. The boats accommodate 20 paddlers, a drummer to keep time, and a helmsman. The race is a 250 meter straight

course, in the water near the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue. Spectators can enjoy demonstrations, food, entertainment and shopping on shore — think Harbor Fest, but with a little chill in the air. Dragon Boat Festivals are held in harbor towns all over the United States, and they are usually colorful, festive occasions. For more information on the Dragon Boat Races, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 609-884-5508. One of the local teams participating is the Kiwanis Club, which will be paddling to raise funds for its programs for young people. They’re seeking support — a little push for their boat — from the $250 Drummer Level, which allows you to dress the boat’s drummer, down to the $200 Hut Level, to the $50 Drum Level, through the $25 Paddle Level, to the Sweep Level. The Kiwanians plan to be the hardest working team on the water, hence their team name: DragonButts — as in, “you ain’t working hard ‘til you’re dragging butts.” To support the Kiwanis team, contact Al Beale at 610-737-7383. BLUE BELL has had a rough life. She was tied to a tree and left for dead. When she was rescued, she was emaciated at 45 pounds. Then, she had to under go an emergency hysterectomy. But, shockingly, her spirits have remained high. She’s now 65 pounds and healthy, good with other dogs, social, and and she even knows some tricks! All she needs now is someone to love. She’s good at that. The adoption fee is $95.

«

GERONIMO is a smart one-yearold pit bull who came to the shelter as a stray. He has an exceptionally sweet temperament, and he really loves going for long walks, being pet and, especially, being scratched behind the ears. Geronimo can go to a home with older children but not with cats and dogs. Geronimo’s adoption fee is only $95 and includes neutering, up-to-date vaccinations and micro-chipping.

HOPE is a gorgeous brindle and white female pit mix who is about eight months old. Her owners surrendered her in May, because they have cancer and could no longer afford to keep Hope. She’s smart, already house-broken, and will learn more quickly with patience. She’s great with dogs and cats, too, and maybe even kids. The adoption fee is $95 and this includes micro-chipping, spaying, and up-to-date vaccinations.

FIONA is a lovable girl who is still trying to get used to shelter life. She might look a little nervous, but if you give her a few minutes to warm up, you’ll have a new best friend. Have a little extra love to give away? Consider giving Fiona a second chance. She’s up-to-date on all vaccines and already spayed. The adoption fee is only $35.

ORION is a friendly, fluffy (aw!), long-haired fella that would really like to meet you. He loves to be pet, and to give the affection right back... you’ll be hardpressed to walk away once you meet him. If you think you can spare the time (he does need grooming!) for a new pal, come meet Orion. The adoption fee is only $35.

SCRUFFY is an outgoing guy who loves to play. As his name suggests, he looks a little rough... but don’t get the wrong impression; he’s a sweetheart who is just a bit older. 17 th ANNUAL DAVID C. DOUGLASS, SR. Golf Tournament & Scholarship Fund Raiser Day Sunday, September 30, 2012

8am until 6pm Avalon Golf Club & Menz Restaurant • Music By Bare Bonz This event is in memory of Officer Douglass, killed in the line of duty while protecting our community February, 18, 1994. Please let me take just a moment to tell you about Officer Douglass. He had been employed with the Lower Township Police Department, was a volunteer firefighter, a member of the S.W.A.T. Team, worked with the K-9 Units, was a firearms instructor and active in many of our local organizations. David was a remarkable man who thought nothing of taking the time to help his friends, neighbors and local children with anything that they needed. David was dispatched to a call of smoke in our local area of North Cape May on the evening of February 18, 1994. Upon arriving at the scene, he witnessed a man running from the property. He was pursuing the subject on foot, when sadly David was fired upon by the subject. David died that evening brutally and senselessly leaving behind his wife, Debbie and three children, David Jr., Cortney and Tina. We shall never forget David or the sacrifice he made for our safety. Please join us in giving back to the community in Dave’s honor. We are pleased to announce that year to date this program is responsible for over $89,000 in awarded scholarships to local students in the community.

Running Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 3pm, now through October 13th, this new critical darling is not one you’ll want to miss! September 21, from 5-6:30pm is “Coffee and Conversation: How Real Life News Informs Artistic Choices.” Made possible by PNC Arts Alive, this is your chance to tour behind-the-scenes of Time Stands Still and discuss the ideas and issues raised by this timely show. With complimentary refreshments, this pre-show discussion with Artistic Director Roy Steinberg explores the

This Monday, September 24th, Cape May Stage is pleased to welcome a staged reading of Robert Auletta’s Agamemnon Redux, a modern adaptation of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. A tale meant to remind the Ancient Greeks of their humanity, Agamemnon’s hubris is his ultimate downfall as he challenges the gods at every turn. Experi-

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HIS is a letter to the woman I met on the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park. No, not you Ms-Love-to-Watch-Sunrises. That’s a future column. YOU, MsHusband-is-the-Photographer-and-LeftYou-All-Alone. Standing amid a bunch of (shudder) bird-watchers. Weirdos who buy cars because they get good mileage, wear shoes because they are comfortable, read books, can identify America’s three branches of government, have a real zest for life. I put a pair of binoculars in your hands. I showed you how to use them. You brought them up to your eyes and looked at: The f locks of Bobolinks... feeding Yellow Warbler... singing Carolina Wren... Caspian Terns... Brown Pelicans... Osprey... and all the other neat birds visible from, over, and beside the platform and... I’ve got to tell you, I’ve never heard so many “OHMYGODS” come out of a person’s mouth this side of a church door. You were enthralled. You were great. You reaffirmed why it is that I started introducing

people to birds some 36 years ago. It was quite an eye-full wasn’t it? I’ll bet the image of that warbler, magnified eight times, just exploded in the visual center of your brain. And how about those bobolinks? Didn’t they sound just like wind chimes ringing in the heavens? You were lucky, you know. Only for a

few short weeks can visitors be treated to the sight (and sound) of bobolinks passing overhead. In a few weeks, most of these grassland birds will be way down in Argentina. Now you see them; now you don’t. But then the whole natural world is like this... in fact, life. Unless you are attuned and aware, it just passes you by. Just like all those natural wonders that surrounded you on the Hawk Watch Platform. You were oblivious to them until I put binoculars in your hand and said “look.” You, Ms-Husba nd-w a s-t hephotographer, were hardly different from most of the planet’s denizens (and most Cape May visitors). You are aware that there is this great, big, spectacle-packed world out there but you just don’t know how to engage it. You were lucky. By sheer good fortune, you found yourself standing in the one place where introducing people to nature is an every day occurrence. Cape May is North America’s best win-

GET TO THE OTHER SIDE.

No matter which half of the Twin Capes you’re on, there’s always more to see and explore waiting on the other side. And there’s no better way to get there than the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. From the waterparks in Delaware, to Victorian architecture in Cape May, if you aren’t visiting both sides of the Twin Capes, you’re missing half the fun.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 dow into the natural world. The people who shared the platform with you: the hawk watching regulars, resident birders, and, maybe especially, the seasonal interpreters, are the natural world’s finest ambassadors. You were at the right place. At the right time. And you were the right person, in the right frame of mind, to be introduced to, and be appreciative of, wonders. The binoculars? Oh. They were just the catalyst. The magic look-throughthings that ferried all that WOW to your eyes. And while those Swarovski 8x32s are expensive, they were the perfect instrument for a person who, until that moment, had never brought binoculars to her eyes. Sharp. Bright. Nimble. User-friendly. They make finding birds easy and that makes getting new birders just like you jazzed about all the natural wonders that until that moment, you were oblivious to. So here’s to you, planet’s newest birder. And Swarovski Optik of North America, this year’s sponsor of the Cape May Point Hawk Watch. You get credited with an assist. If you want to experience some of your

The bobolink is the only American bird that is black underneath and white on back. After mating, the male's plumage becomes more “drab and camouflaged.” own OHMYGOD moments, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736). It's open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. You can ask the staff for help, and pick up a free birding map, checklist and, schedule of our daily walks. You can also talk to our staff about the best optics for birding (including those Swarovski 8x32s), check out field guides, and anything else you might need. While there, scan the book-

shelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory (which is free when you become a member), or be the first (well, maybe the second or third) on your block to add the newest Hawks in Flight clothing to your wardrobe. Or just let your fingers do the birding online at BirdCapeMay.org. Join Pete for his Monday morning walk at the South Cape May Meadows. Just meet by 7:30am in The Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Loaner binoculars are available at no cost; the walk is $6 for CMBO or NJ Audubon members; $10 for non-members. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

Stan Sperlak

I’ve known Stan for about five years. He’s a very pleasant, snickery guy, quick-witted and fun to joke with. His art glows... he creates unfounded luminescence with pastels. But what I like about him most: he’s no bones when he talks about art. No frilly, fluffy poetry BS. When it comes to art, Stan is all brass tacks. — ARTIST VICTOR GRASSO, NORTH CAPE MAY
