Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Ray Mayer of Cape May. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I moved here about 25 years ago from Baltimore, Maryland. Who are you normally with? I live with my wife, Joanne. Our eight children come to visit us throughout the year. Favorite thing about Cape May? The beaches and harbor are beautiful, and the people are so friendly. Least favorite thing? Parking is definitely a problem, but I don’t know if there’s a solution. Favorite restaurants? Lucky Bones — my favorite dish is the fish and chips. Favorite place to stay? We live in a condo on Yacht Avenue. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Absolutely nothing. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Every month, I chuckle over the description of the council meetings, and what the members were wearing. I feel like I was actually there. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? You have to look all over to find it! That’s why we started subscribing. What’s your T-shirt size? Extra large, please!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Diane Stopyra. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

“I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.” — Don Vito Corleone from The Godfather “Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” — Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz “Here’s looking at you, kid” — Rick from Casablanca

Random Factoid

THE first feature film created soley with Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) was Disney’s 1995 animated classic, Toy Story. Over 800,000 hours of mathematical equations went into the film, which works out to more than a week of computer time for every second on the screen.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Vespar “A VODKA Martini, shaken not stirred”. We all know this famous line from the Bond movies, and most of us have probably tried the line out in our own Bond-like fashion. Besides champagne, the Vodka Martini is the drink most consumed by Bond in the movies. We have heard him order it more than 20 times in the series. Bond named this drink (a concoction of his own) after Vespar Lynd, the double agent he fell in love with in Casino Royale.

Ingredients: 3 oz gin 1 oz vodka 1/2 oz dry vermouth (we recommend Lillet Blanc) 1 lemon peel for garnish Fill a shaker halfway with ice and add all remaining ingredients. “Shake it very well until it’s ice-cold, and then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?” says James Bond.

Upcoming can’t-miss events around town... mark your calendars

HE SOMA NewArt Gallery is opening up two new exhibits on October 20. Sandra Bloodworth is presenting her “Urban Principles” collection, which includes large scale portraits of artists, curators, poets and designers who have contributed significantly to a public dialogue that inspires and challenges us to think and look at things in new and different ways. Sam Donovan presents “New Watercolors”, paintings inspired by things he loves, such as the outdoors and rural landscapes. Both exhibits will be on view at SOMA Gallery from October 20 to November 25. HELP keep your beaches clean by volunteering for the 2012 Fall Beach Sweep. Volunteers will help remove litter from public access beaches adjacent to the Corinthian Yacht Club, the harbor along the front of the Nature Center, Fisherman’s Memorial, and ending at Harbor View Park. Trash bags, work gloves, snacks and instructions will be provided, and it is recommended that you wear sturdy work

shoes, comfortable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat. If you’re interested, report to the Beach Captain, New Jersey Audubon’s Sanctuary Director, Gretchen Whitman, at the Nature Center, 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, this Saturday morning, October 20 at 9am-12:30pm. COLD Spring Village is hosting its 21st Annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 20 from 10am to 4:30pm. Families can come and enjoy pumpkin painting, games, a haunted house at the Village Barn, the Children’s Halloween Parade, and a fall hayride through the farm. Local crafters will be selling their wares, and vendors will be providing you and your family with tons of tasty treats. Call the Lower Township Recreation Department at (609) 8867880 for parade registration information. The best part is, the whole event is free of charge! Guests are, however, encouraged to donate non-perishable goods to the “Share the Harvest” Food Drive. JAZZ Vespers is proud to present a performance by the Brian Betz

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Lights, Camera, Action! THIS year, the 12th annual Cape May Film Festival hit a few snags. The folks who organize the event, members of the Cape May Film Society, had wanted to show the American fantasy drama Beasts of the Southern Wild, but they don’t have the resources to screen a movie not yet out on DVD, for example. Then there was the speaker who was going to lecture on the life of Marilyn Monroe; he fell through, too. We asked Film Society President Dottie Knapp what causes such difficulties, and she said it boils down to problems of cost and equipment. “If we make any money on this festival, it gets channeled back into the film camps we sponsor,” she told us. In other words, it’s not about turning a profit… it’s about giving back to the community. “The festival is a way to connect people,” she said. “Since we don’t have a theater any more, this is the one time we can all come together and watch a movie right down the street. It’s our way of giving Cape May something.” And when the goal is such a worthy one, things sometimes have a way of falling in to place beautifully... even despite a few snafus. “I’m going to quote Shakespeare in Love by saying, ‘It’s a mystery,’” Dottie explained. “This is one of the years where it’s all come together.” With short films, documentaries, and independent features taken from Jersey City’s acclaimed Black Mariah festival on tap, this year’s festival — held the weekend before Thanksgiving — promises to be impactful for both the seasoned filmmaker and that guy who tags along only for the free popcorn. And what makes it such a must-attend

event? “For us,” Dottie said, “the festival is all about making it personal. We want films that have some connection to New Jersey, or else we want to bring someone in who can enthuse us about the particular project.” It’s this personalization, perhaps, that has earned the little Cape May Film Festival a reputation in its own right… guests of honor have included the likes of Susan Sarandon, and Stefan Prosky — son of acclaimed actor Robert Prosky, whose pedigree includes films like Miracle on 34th Street and Rudy — acts as curator. We gave Stefan a ring, and he told us that he started out as a microbiologist, then a “tissue engineer” working to develop skin for burn victims. (“The tissue is really alive,” he said, because we couldn’t help but ask about it, no matter how off-the topic of movies. “You have to feed it and take care of it… it’s kind of crazy.”) But Stefan eventually decided to earn his MFA in 3D animation in Manhattan and now he teaches video editing and 3D animation at the Art Institute of Washington. “My only claim to fame is that I used to edit Spongebob,” he told us, “and a character called Face on Nickelodeon”… a character also edited, it turns out, by the man responsible for Popeye and Betty Boop. But no matter how big-time he may be, Stefan still loves Cape May — he’s owned a house in the Point with his two brothers since the 70s — and he loves working on the Cape May Film Festival. “I can get upwards of 600 or 700 submissions from all over New Jersey,” he told us. “And we sift through them, choosing only about one of every three.” This year, you can expect to see a wide variety of topics covered, especially in the documentaries. We’re talking about every-

thing from “crazy stunts with airplanes” (a film about the world’s shortest landing strip, the top of an old 1940 Sudan), to dance films (the one about the two Cuban sisters, one of whom will be speaking at the festival, who were reunited after nearly forty years), to flicks about hitchhiking. “A lot of our shorts are about courage,” Stefan told us. “That’s the theme this year. I think it’s really about taking chances and facing your fears and feel ing more alive. Even a thing like hitch-hiking takes guts, you know?” We can’t say we’ve tried hitchiking recently, but we can say how much we’re looking forward to this year’s festival, and we hope to see you there. It will be held at the Chalfonte Hotel which, Dottie told us, provides several smaller rooms very conducive to watching movies and then discussing them in an intimate setting afteward. The hotel is providing the food (“Definitely popcorn,” Dottie said) at no charge, and the booze, at a charge. For the official program, simply flip over this issue of Exit Zero. See you there, Cape May!

It’s A Scream

LAST Saturday night, we left Cape May (gasp) and headed for the second annual Morey’s Fears: Terror on the Boardwalk in Wildwood. We paid our meter (25 cents gets you only 10 minutes… that’s frightening in itself), and hit the boards. “Head scare guy,” our own Terry O’Brien of Undertow fame, waited to greet us. Terry, who oversees all of the willieinducing happenings, led us through an eerie haze (120 rented fog machines currently line

Continued On Page 14 ?

If you love Halloween, and you love zombies, and you love having the living bejeezus scared out of you, don’t miss Morey’s Fears, on the Wildwood boardwalk between now and October 27 Jack Wright

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 Morey’ Piers), past the creepy music coming from a cob-webbed carousel, and beyond a blood-streaked ticket booth. The people behind the chilling decorations have gone all out; Terry wouldn’t tell us what his budget was, just that it’s “somewhere between $100 and $1 million” and that he used it all. We made our way into the prep room, where seven teams of make-up artists had been painting the faces of about 100 actors since 2:30pm. There were half-dressed zombies, carnivorous clowns, and other members of the undead roaming about. It was a freak show, and that’s saying something considering it’s the Wildwood boardwalk we’re talking about (we kid, we kid). It was about this time some of us got just a bit queasy… probably because it was also about this time that Terry mentioned the “codes” which need to be called “about once a week”: code 40 for when a Fears-goer vomits, 41 for when someone urinates, and 42 for when some poor soul does a number two in one of the attraction’s five haunts… a fine thing to learn just as the sun has sunk below the horizon and blood-curdling zombie screams begin echoing through the pier. Waiting to enter is about as frightening as the

thought of Mayor Ed Mahaney being elected for another term (sorry, couldn’t resist). The machete-carrying ghouls who warn folks standing in line not to expect all members of one’s party to exit alive don’t exactly help. What kind of person would want to spend their days surrounded by such horror? “You have to be just a little bit weird,” Terry told us. That, or just up for a really good time. The actors — among them, accountants, maintenance folks and other Morey’s workers — enjoy what they do, and you can tell. Some of the zombies are actually friendly… they even wish you good luck before you enter the Ghost Ship which, complete with an undead crew, is the scariest of the haunts. As much as these people want to freak you out, they want you to have a good time, too… which your reporter did, despite the fact that Exit Zero honcho Jack Wright kept pushing her into the zombies, some of whom can really pull off the fake pus look. Then there was the Cornstalkers exhibit, in which we made our way through a maze on the beach made of 30,000 cornstalks... as well as the chainsaw-wielding inhabitants of this maze. Let’s just say we heard the the 300-pound (give or take... we didn’t ask) biker dude in front of us let out a yelp more than once. By this point, we’d worked up quite

an appetite, so we decided to head back to Cape May for dinner at The Ebbitt Room (a refreshingly civilized and very unscary end to the evening), and we never made it to the other three haunts: Carnevil, The Other Side, and the Terror Trench. But we did stop a group of police officers on our way out to ask if they were expecting any fatalities at any of the above. They said they wouldn’t talk to the press because they were afraid they’d get into trouble for it. So there you have it, folks… even the cops are afraid at Morey’s Fears! Check it out for yourself on October 19, 20, 26 and 27, from 7 to 11pm. Just don’t wear a costume; they won’t let you in... and make sure you hit the restroom beforehand, just to be safe.

Well Schooled CONGRATULATIONS to Cape May City Elementary School, which has been approved by the state’s Department of Education for the Public School Choice Program. “That means that students from other county schools may choose to attend our school for the 2013-14 school year. That seems like a year away— however, parents have to apply this fall,” said Victoria Zelenak, Superintendent of Cape May City School District. The island’s other school, West Cape May Elementary, is already in the program.

WHY IS going to the movies so expensive these days? I think I may have to take out a loan to see the next big hit. — Cape May [Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: Well, at least the candy, popcorn and sodas are really cheap... not!]

And why do they call them flicks sometimes? — Villas *** SOMETIMES in the movie credits I see an employee called a Key Grip... What is that? Someone holding a key really tight? — Cape May *** I THINK we should go back to calling them motion pictures! — Erma *** I SEEM to recall an ad in Exit Zero a few years back for whale rides... any info on that as I would like to do it. — Cape May [Spouty-Offy Editor’s Note: Why yes, we did run a FAKE ad about whale rides and did get a few calls. But the best fake ad was for camel rides on the beach in which we got 50+ calls. And the Seagull Jerky fake ad got quite a few calls too!]

Letters To The Editor

We don’t often print them, but when we get them, we do!

T

HE West Cape May community is at risk of being blindsided. Many voters are not even aware that a small petition drive has resulted in the placement of two referendum questions on the November 6 ballot. Question #1 seeks to increase the Borough Commission from three to five members; Question #2 seeks to decrease Commission compensation. We strongly urge the citizens to vote NO and NO. Why is such a major change to our Borough Commission being pushed through without the benefit of a fair, open debate? Where is the studied approach which fully discloses the political and financial ramifications of this change? What is the rush? A basic look at the facts clearly demonstrates that this is NOT the time to grow the size of government! In recent years, the population of West Cape May has decreased to less than 1000. Our three-member commission is specifically designed for small towns in New Jersey. The commission has worked well to keep our officials accountable to its voters. The borough’s affairs are handled efficiently, maintaining a responsible balance between pro-business and environmental interests. So if efficiency and competency are not the issue, why are a few people working so hard to expand the number of seats on the Commission? The only answer is... special interests. This referendum is a shady political tactic by some to get more votes on the Commission to achieve their own objectives. This kind of expansion was already tried in Wildwood with disastrous results. The people quickly realized their mistake and voted to return to the original three-member commission

due to the confusion and inefficiency the expansion caused. We should not be fooled either by the second referendum question proposing salary reductions — it is a red herring. At face value, cost reductions sound like a good idea, but common sense tells us that growing government always winds up costing the taxpayers more money. The small-town character and hometown values that make West Cape May unique must be protected from special interests. Judy Smith and Ann E. Breen, West Cape May

T

HERE are 31 communities in New Jersey that utilize the form of government practiced in West Cape May. Of those, 77% use a three-member commission and the others use five members. The seven communities with five commissioners have an average population of 38,141. The 24 communities with three commissioners have an average population of 4,063. West Cape May has a population of 1,024. There is no practical reason or precedent to change the size of our commission. As to the compensation issue, West Cape May just received praise from its auditor for its fiscal management. We are clearly not over-compensating our commissioners. To me, it seems that reducing the existing, modest salaries goes beyond fiscal responsibility and puts us at risk of reducing the pool of people who would be able to serve. We should remember the old adage, “you get what you pay for”. I encourage West Cape May voters to select NO and NO to the two referendum questions which will be on West Cape May’s November 6 ballot. Gary Sorin, West Cape May

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

M

OREY’S Fears is OPEN, bitches! And with two weekends left there’s still plenty of time for you to gather up the young ’uns, saddle up the wagon train and mosey up yonder to Exit 4. But I won’t bore you with more talk of my Morey’s Piers exploits… I’ll let Talk of the Town do it for me (see page 13). EZ duo Jack Wright and Diane Stopyra got a backstage look then “enjoyed” the event Saturday night — Jack jumps like an eightyear-old girl when faced with the undead… classic. All I’ll say is that it’s a great deal of fun, and considering you get five haunts, six rides, and unlimited access to all for $30 ($25 with a coupon available in… other newspapers) it is excellent value. But the proof is in the pudding. Come see for yourself. Or ask Leslie Kramer on Facebook — she freakin’ loved it. So then, what’s a columnist to do when he has a column due Sunday night after working 24 of the previous 36 hours, is completely exhausted and has not a damn thing to write about? You go DO stuff, THAT’S what!

I started out debating whether to go with the wife and kids to the Erma Oktoberfest at the airport complex, or stay home and watch the Eagles-Lions game. After watching three plays of the Eagles-Lions game, off I went. Now, I’m human, I enjoy these little festivals every damn weekend (Oktoberfest, Lima Bean Whozit, Strawberry Hullabaloo) but what I do not enjoy at these “free” events is $5 lemonade, $6 french fries, $9 cheese steaks, etc, ad nauseum. Oh, and the $5 speed pitch. I repeat: the $5 speed pitch. PASS. I understand everyone’s got to make a living, but it’s bad form to gouge customers, most of whom are there with a gaggle of kids, many of whom, like me, have about

two dimes to rub together this time of year. I don’t want a bunch of free stuff, but I want a bunch of stuff at a fair price. Well, not a “fair” price, because they really overcharge at those things, too. But… you know what I mean. In other words, two Chipstix and two lemonades shouldn’t eat up 20% of my weekly disposable income. Next we headed to Never Surrender tattoo parlor on Bayshore Road in North Cape May for their annual end-of-season party. Yes, you read that correctly. Took the kids, who were TERRIFIED we were going to force tattoos on them (okay, so maybe I encouraged that a little). Regardless, I got a late Friday night Facebook invite from Keith Stevenson, who must have thought I was a pretty young girl when he IM’ed me the invite (okay, so maybe I encouraged that a little), asking me to stop by and sing a few tunes with his band, 5-Hour Jones. And while I did not stay long enough to give the world the gift of my voice, the Jones boys know how to rock. They are: the aforementioned Keith (who has a landscaping company I was going to plug a few

The Undertow ? From Page 43 weeks ago but Jack Wright and I had spent several hours drinking heavily and I could not decipher my own notes), Dennis McKenna (who used to “audition” female singer at Terry O’ke… kid’s got game), Rob Cummiskey (who did an admirable job faking his way through The Cars’ “Just What I Needed” while reading the lyrics on his iPhone), Mike Beers (mmm… beers) and John Lambert (got nuthin). Incidentally, Dennis McKenna is also second only to Shane Boyd in total amount of guts spilled on a highway. The band sounded great (catch them October 27 at the Ugly Mug, and again for New Year’s Eve) and the crowd was exactly what you’d expect at a midday tattoo parlor party — three o’clock drunk hackeysacking beardos, covered in ink, reeking of patchouli, grinding on their skateboards. There were fewer car fires than I was expecting, but we left before dark so god knows what happened later… Come on, I KID by playing up gross stereotypes… everyone was perfectly nice, included my kids in the hackey circle, and offered us pizza and beers. I politely declined because if I DID have a beer I wasn’t leaving there without a tat. (I like the idea of a tattoo, but am FAR too much of a coward to actually get one.) Also on hand were the Mug’s Casey Smith (if that IS her real name), Mary Sexton of Cabanas, and Tanya Dunbracco, Dwight’s sister, bar affiliation unknown. . Also chatted with sound man Rob Shocker, who told me he really dug Morey’s Fears and is big into haunted houses. I like him already! Rob also runs sound for the R.O.C.K. open mic at the Shamrock in Wildwood, which replaced Man Cave Monday, but is run by the same musicians (I don’t get it either… it’s musicians… and Wildwood). After this we headed to The Mad Batter for Mikella Austin’s first art show, which is a big deal for anyone, even more so when you’re nine years old. Parents Shawn and Dawn (she

of the COOL scars on her arm, he whom I once “killed” in one of my short stories) were beaming and the artwork, which I was prepared to say nice things about as a reasonably polite and socialized human person, was really quite good and not in need of my faux-pity. My favorites were her rendition of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, the “Ghouls Rule” zombies, and a touching portrait of the late Andy Boyt. Get her now before she goes all Grasso on us. Grrrr of the Week: Got a call from my partner in Acoustic Mayhem, Will Knapp (Ding!), asking if I could fill in for him in 16 Candelabras, the current, ’80s-set show at Elaine’s Dinner Theater, and had to say, “Sorry, no.” Given my history with the place I knew Holly (Mrs Knapp and Elaine’s Artistic Director who was about 12 years old when I hired her…), must have exhausted every conceivable option, up to and including placing a mannequin on stage in a moody trench coat and teaching a hamster to sing A-ha. But my brain has lost a little elasticity (and 30 billion active cells) the last decade and the result would have been a disservice to all. Fat bald guys flopsweating like Albert Brooks while trying to recall a line of dialogue is entertaining to no one this side of Ricky Gervais. Ironically, the cast of Elaine’s was meant to be the focus of this week’s column until a last-minute schedule conflict, and now I’m a little afraid to go because they’ll all make fun of me for being a scaredy-cat. But then, it’s not like I’m covering miltant uprisings in Kenya or anything, so I can probably hack it. Like any good American I hate the Yankees. That said, it was a drag seeing Derek Jeter go down that way. I could cite all kinds of statistics, but the only important one is this — 18 seasons, 17 postseasons. Now everyone shut up — I’m trying to watch The Walking Dead… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Come And See TED In Cape May This Weekend

M

Inspiring talks by regional entrepreneurs and artists, at Congress Hall on October 21

AYBE you’ve heard the talks on YouTube, or listened to a Podcast about them on NPR. Maybe you’ve saved your pennies to see one in person. Or maybe you’re just now hearing about the 18-minute speeches being given all over the world by some of the planet’s most inspirational men and women. They’re sponsored by TED, a non-profit devoted to sharing ideas worth spreading, and now, thanks to Norris Clark of Cape May Forum, they’re coming here. Norris applied to attend his first TED event in Palm Springs a year in advance — that’s how popular they are — and he was moved by what he heard there: Bill Gates’ eloquating on global warming; Temple Grandin, on autism; Natalie Merchant, on bringing old poems to life through song; and Jamie Oliver, on why our kids are fat, no sugar-coating. “We were so blown away,” Norris told us, “we decided to bring this back to our own neck of the woods.” This Sunday, Congress Hall will host the first TEDx (the “x” meaning indepen-

dently organized) event in our area. Norris has gathered 12 of the region’s most “innovative, creative, inspirational” people — including Curtis Bashaw of Cape Resorts Group, Jack Morey of Morey’s Piers, B&B pioneer Tom Carroll, design guru Michael Bierut and energy innovator Danny Cohen — and designated a theme, the interplay between recreation and re-creation. And he’s garnered the attention of folks from around the globe. “I had one gentleman who was interested in speaking reach out from Saudi Arabia,” Norris said. “When you do a TED talk, you become one of 1,700 of these across the globe. It draws a very large audience.” An audience, Norris says, that will leave motivated. “I hope they’ll be stimulated to explore new ideas,” he said, “to learn about things that weren’t on their radar screen before, and to be inspired.” Which is a hell of a deal, we think, for a $50 ticket, especially one which includes a gourmet box lunch and open bar. LAUREN MULHOLLAND Perseverance Lauren has survived two bouts with cancer which resulted in the removal of a kidney at age nine and a lung transplant at age 15. That is her medical history in the tightest of nutshells. For Lauren, it was the life after cancer or cancers that was the most difficult. The treatment for the cancers, the kidney removal and the transplant were all necessary to just stay alive in the moment and once this act of survival was accomplished the journey of life was able to truly begin. Her story of perseverance is inherent in her survival and her life today. Now 22, Lauren has graduated from Wildwood High School and is currently an undergraduate at Rowan University. Although all the repercussions of her illness ridden youth effect her on a dayto-day basis, Lauren pushes on and plans to graduate college and enter the working world. HANNA MILLER Cooking Born and raised in the Cape May restaurant scene, Hanna has followed her passion for food, cooking, and culture to her current research at Harvard on the intersections of food, popular culture, and religion in American society. Hanna received her BA, Magna Cum Laude, from

Williams College and Oxford University in 2009. After receiving a degree from the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan she took a position at the Michelin-starred Gramercy Tavern in New York City. Since returning to academia her research has taken her as far afield as South Korea, Jerusalem, and Utah. Hanna is currently completing her master’s degree at Harvard with plans to continue on to a doctorate. JACK MOREY The Kid in All of Us Jack is a second-generation co-owner of Morey’s Piers and Beachfront Waterparks, ranked among the top three seaside amusement parks in the world by Amusement Today. As Vice Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, Jack playfully and passionately describes his work and ethos as “tacky and proud of it!” He is quick to argue that he is actually not creative all, but has a very open mind which allows him to direct his vast array of creative and artistic colleagues. In addition to what he refers to as “sculpting” the amusement piers for the kid in all of us, he has a passion for the importance of the Wildwoods’ public spaces and places. He has worked on several civic projects including the Doo Wop Preservation League, the Wildwoods gateway welcome sign, Doo Wop design guidelines, Boardwalk design guidelines and the Wildwoods Vision 2015 Plan. JACK WRIGHT Publishing For nearly 20 years, Jack was an award-winning editor on national newspapers and magazines in his native Britain and in New York before moving to Cape May 10 years ago, launching Exit Zero Publishing. The company publishes a weekly magazine, an annual guide book and various publications for outside companies. He is on the boards of Cape May Stage and Historic Cold Spring Village.

Larger Than Life

I

Well, actually, the portraits are life-size in Sandra Bloodworth’s new exhibit at SOMA NewArt Gallery

CONIC New Yorkers are the subject of artist Sandra Bloodworth’s life-size portraits in her new exhibit, “Urban Principles”. The exhibit, featuring people who have “inspired and challenged us to think and look at things in new and different ways”, is on display at SOMA NewArt Gallery from this Saturday, October 20 to November 25, on Thursdays through Mondays, 10am to 6pm. Subjects include the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Vito Acconci, and Bob Holman. Ginsberg spoke of the changes in American culture and consumer capitalism in his poems, while artist Acconci is constantly blurring the line between art and architecture. After spending brief amounts of time with all her subjects, Bloodworth would then try to recapture their personality, along with their monumental accomplishments, in her paintings. Her subjects look as if they might come to life and begin to engage the spectator in conversation. For more information call (609) 8987488 or visit SOMA at somagallery.net and on Facebook.

Cape May Can Be Better!

Elect RUSSELL “RUSTY” CHEW For MAYOR CITY of CAPE MAY

WHY AM I RUNNING FOR MAYOR?

BECAUSE...

Because together we can move Cape May forward! RChewCapeMay@gmail.com

H H H H H

I AM READY, WILLING, AND AVAILABLE. I’M CONFIDENT “CAPE MAY CAN BE BETTER.” OUR CITY GOVERNMENT’S ESTEEM IS AT AN ALL-TIME LOW. WE HAVE HIRED OUTSIDE PEOPLE TO ADVISE US, WHEN WE IGNORE OUR OWN EXPERTISE. I CAN HARNESS LOCAL TALENT TO ENRICH THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY. THIS IS MY OPPORTUNITY TO ACT AS THE COUNCIL’S CATALYST. WITH A FIVE-MEMBER COUNCIL ALL WORKING TOGETHER WE WILL NOT IGNORE THE FAULKNER ACT.

Before retirement I spent 25 years as a Cape May police officer, making me exempt from entering political office. Now I am eligible, willing, able, and available to serve my community. I grew up here, went to school here, worked in public service here, own property here, continue to volunteer as a fireman for over 32 years, and, most importantly, I raised a family here. I now have the next generation of family living here and I want to ensure that they will have the same or better opportunities that I had. I’ve been witness to a lifetime of changes, progress, and failures. I am committed to making a difference and I believe “Cape May Can Be Better.” I am asking for your vote on Tuesday, November 6th. Animal Outreach launches its new Adoption Center in West Cape May

NIMAL Outreach is inviting you to the grand opening of the new Animal Outreach Adoption Center, happening on Saturday, November 3 from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. The center is located at 600 Park Boulevard, Unit 3, in West Cape May. Until now, the non-profit organization had relied on foster homes for the care of homeless cats and dogs. “We’re still going to rely on those foster homes,” says Ellen Shaw, President of Animal Outreach, “but now we have a location where people can meet adoptable pets in person.” Shaw says Animal Outreach continues to be a resource for the municipal shelter. “It’s a great help to cats and dogs,” she says, “and we’re sure this center will help them as well.” The group still remains hopeful that they will build a stand-alone animal shelter with funding from the community and US Department of Agriculture. “The board has been diligent in its study of what approach to take with a new structure,” says Gina Tubertini-Loeff lad, Treasurer for Animal

Rudy, a 13-year-old “puppy”, was adopted by Exit Zero from the Cape May County Animal Shelter, and he lights up our lives. Perhaps you’ll find your perfect companion at the new Animal Outreach Adoption Center in West Cape May. Outreach. “This is an interim step.” The Animal Outreach Adoption Center’s public hours are 12:00-3:00pm, Friday through Sunday, with hours by appointment

other days. Volunteers are always needed for caring of adoptable pets seven days a week. If you would like to volunteer at the center, call 609-898-1738.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

where the smartest citizens of that city would engage the monkeys in tasks of dexterity and memory, losing across the board.) The owner, that Barnum showman, had been unable to find a suitable gorilla so had substituted with as close a specimen of monkeyhood as he could find at short notice. Thus the hushed crowd saw not a chestbeating ape but a tiny chimp in a fez, riding a tricycle. It pedaled gamely up the beach, ringing a tiny bell and smoking a cigarette. Uncannily, it rode straight at Miss Wray, who, having no time for tiny groping sim-

ians, screamed. The beast panicked, veering through the bottom of the Empire State Building, its cigarette setting the structure alight, and on it continued, cycling into the cinema trailing flaming cinders and red hot ash. Well, I tell you, there was panic as the towering inferno (small caps there: I had a hand in the actual Towering Inferno but no more of that here) went up like a Roman candle, or rather like a 1:10 scale model of a skyscraper, built from balsa wood and filled with hydrogen balloons to avoid the weight of it collapsing itself on the crowd. Well, when the flames hit the hydrogen there was an explosion that sent guests in every direction. That there were no fatalities I can only put down to the abundance of taffy carts around the crowd: they acted as an effective — if sticky — landing pad. Of the monkey, we saw no more, though they are long-lived beasts. To this day people who walk the streets after dark say they can hear the squeak of tiny wheels and the ringing of a minuscule bell.

H, HOW I loved the Golden Age of Hollywood. Cecil B. DeMille was a regular visitor to Cape May, and indeed the full scale set he built here for the doomed Cleopatra: The Vacation Years is still visible on a clear day if one takes scuba gear and dives off the Point. We used to have a score of deco cinemas then, every one attracting the top movie stars in the world to walk our red carpet, eat Saltwater Taffy and drink themselves silly at The Brown Room. Do you remember we hosted the premiere of King Kong? We ordered in a giant ape and had a 1:10 replica of the Empire State Building constructed on the boardwalk. The delectable Fay Wray turned up, too, to celebrate. There was a crowd of some 5,000 gathered to watch the cargo barge as it bumped to the beach, and the massive back doors opened to disgorge the mighty gorilla. Well, who was to know there had been a run on simians at the then-famed Wildwood House of First-Class Monkeys? (It was Philly’s annual “Man versus Ape” contest,

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I attended a wedding at Congress Hall last week and it was, of course, lovely. However, I noticed quite a bit of ill manners – excessive drinking, foul language, and just general bad behavior. Unfortunately, most of this was courtesy of the bride! Did I just have one of those ‘bridezilla’ encounters I keep hearing about? — Shocked Dear Shocked Indeed you did. And trust the Answer Lady — no Halloween ghoul is scarier than a bridezilla. Generally speaking, though, this term refers to the bride’s bad behavior leading up to the wedding — when it is in the planning stages and she is acting as if she’s coordinating the second coming of Christ. This is when she is busy issuing edicts about how much her bridesmaids should weigh, picking out egregious and unflattering dresses for them

Wise answers to perplexing questions

to wear, and driving the venue wedding coordinators to drink. (The Answer Lady happens to be acquainted with several event planners, at Congress Hall and at other area venues; she does not know how much money they make, but it would not possibly be enough to cover the alcohol/therapy/chocolate-related expenses the Answer Lady would incur if she had their jobs, God bless them.) And although the Answer Lady finds bridezilla behavior abhorrent, she is almost able to give the poor dears a pass on the actual Big Day.

Most brides are not quite in their right minds on their wedding day. And the Answer Lady feels like a princess just walking in the front door of Congress Hall. If she swept through that door in a wedding dress, she’s quite sure should wouldn’t be responsible for her behavior, either. Dear Answer Lady My nephew is getting married in Cape May next month, and I live out of state. I feel terrible that I won’t be able to be there, so I want to make sure that I send an appropriate gift. Shall I pay for them to stay at their favorite Cape May bed and breakfast inn for a few days? Or do you think sending them $500 would be more appropriate? – Aunt Sadie Dear Aunt Sadie The Answer Lady thinks that she is going to be filing for divorce immediately for the sole purpose of remarrying and ascertaining that you are on the guest list. Both of your gifts are thoughtful and exceedingly generous (provided, of course, that you can afford them — the Answer Lady will go ahead and presume here that you are not going into hock out of guilt for your inability to attend).

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you and where are you from? We are Joane and Mike Boyle and we’re from Freeland, Pennsylvania. What do you do? [Joane] I work as a salesperson at a specialty meat company, and Mike’s a physical therapy assistant. Why are you here? It’s our first time in Cape May! Today we’ll visit the lighthouse and Cape May Day Spa. We’re celebrating our 25th anniversary. We’ve known one another since kindergarten. What’s the secret? Tolerance! The theme of this week’s Exit Zero is movies. What’s the last movie you saw? Bridesmaids. We’re looking forward to seeing The Hobbit when it comes out. It made the whole thing very elegant. The night was a positive one, and it was a great way to see everyone out of the Yacht Club. — Shaine Meier, Cape May

Activity Of The Week

H

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Boo at the Zoo

ALLOWEEN is the time to play with scary stories and make everyday activities a little more spine-tingling. Why not add a little excitement to your family outing with “Boo at the Zoo?” Around the world, there have been plenty of scary animal/human interactions at zoos. Of course, the most dangerous animal you’ll encounter is the homo sapien, and in most cases, it’s the human who instigates an animal attack... usually with some monumentally stupid behavior. You’ve likely heard about the guy who jumped off the monorail into the tiger enclosure at the Bronx Zoo because he wanted to bond with the tigers. He survived, but that doesn’t mean tigers — and bears and alligators and even cuddly snow leopards — won’t attack if provoked. Camels have been known to bite. Monkeys can interpret a smile as a sign of aggression and lash out. And humans who ignore the zoo’s ban on food are taunting the animals. At Halloween, have some fun with these tail tales.

Forget zombies and goblins... have you seen how scary the teeth are on Rocky at the Cape May County Zoo are? The Cape May County Zoo is one of the best attractions in the area, and with the bargain admission price of zero dollars, you’ve probably taken the kids there a lot. Maybe your kids are a little jaded. For Halloween, ramp up the experience. Emphasize the fact that chickens are descended from tyrannosaurus rex! That a monkey in Sweden, named Santino, plots against his human visitors, stockpiling stones to throw

at them! That some poisonous snakes can travel at 12 miles per hour, while the average human can only travel 11 miles per hour! That the common germ-carrying fly may be the most dangerous creature you’ll meet at the zoo! Everything is more fun with an exclamation point! The Cape May County Zoo is getting in to the spirit with “Boo at the Zoo!” scheduled for October 27 from 10am to 2pm. Wear your costume to the zoo and enjoy games, candy, entertainment, a stiltwalker, a strolling magician and, of course, the 550 animals who call the zoo home. There will be a costume contest, a hypnotist from the First Trance Comedy Troupe, and live animal shows. Fall is an active time for most of the animals, so it’s a great time to go to the zoo anyway, and this popular Halloween event makes it all the more so. The Cape May County Park and Zoo is located at 707 Route 9 North in Cape May Court House — take Exit 11 off of the Garden State Parkway. For details, call 609465-5271 or visit capemaycountygov.net. Bird Droppings

W

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu HAT do you mean you don’t own The Sibley Guide to Birds? In Cape May, that is tantamount to saying you don’t bathe or dine

out or watch birds. You do bathe, don’t you? Right. Well then, there is no excuse not to own the Sibley Guide. The bird-watching equivalent of the Rosetta Stone, the Magna Carta, and Exit Zero all rolled into one... but leaning heavily toward the Rosetta Stone. Okay — so out of the wealth of bird field guides, what makes this one so special? Well first, there is the author. David Allen Sibley, once called the “hottest thing to hit birding since the Phoenicians melted sand.” And this was back when he was just David Sibley. The young journeyman birder artist living in Cape May Point. Back before he became world famous. Okay. That’s one reason. Here’s another: The book, illustrations and text, were crafted in Cape May Point. Yep. It’s homegrown. And much of the knowledge David banked and

draws from was founded right here in Cape May. Just think. When you open David’s book to the Dovkie plate (page 244) you are looking at a bird that David sketched for the very first time while kneeling on the sand of the South Cape May Meadows. Okay, maybe not the same sand. The ocean and the Army Corps have been pretty

busy since that encounter between David and the Dovkie some 30 years ago. But the best reason to have a Sibley Guide (or two or six) is because it is simply excellent. Brilliantly conceived. Wonderfully illustrated. Systematic. Comparative. Accurate. Facile. Utilitarian. State-of-the-Art. The perfect fusion of illustration and text. It’s the guide I turn to first when I have a question about some puzzling plumage. It’s the final word when it comes to the accurate rendering of shape. Don’t take my word for it. Take the word of Roger Tory Peterson. The guy who wrote the first real, functional field guide to the birds way back in 1934. Said Roger Tory Peterson when presented with his first Sibley illustration in the late 80s (one showing a comparison of Tennessee and Orange-crowned Warblers): “He certainly has a marvelous sense of shape, doesn’t he.” Yes, he certainly does. Actually, did. The plate Roger held in his hand was a proto, prototype to the plates David crafted for his field

Bird Droppings ? From Page 103 guide which was published in 2000, many years after Roger’s initial critique. David’s “sense of shape” is even better now. You want one more reason to buy a Sibley? David Allen Sibley will be coming to town for New Jersey Audubon’s Annual Birding Festival, October 26-28. Now living in Massachusetts, it’s not often that North America’s most acclaimed birder comes back to some of his favorite haunts. David will be signing books and selling art at his own booth at the Cape May Convention Center. You can meet the legend. You can get your six or nine Sibley Guides signed Why so many? Well, one for the car, one for the library, one for the window overlooking the bird feeders, one for the other car... And the rest you can give as presents! The holidays are coming. You want to make it look like you put a lot of thought into this year’s present. How about a personalized field guide? Your biggest challenge might be buying your guide before they run out at the Cape May Bird Observatory booth at the Convention Center. Or deciding on just one. After all there is The Sibley Guide to Birds, The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior, The Sibley

The locally penned Sibley Guide is a must-read for both novices and seasoned birders Guide to Birds — East, The Sibley Guide to Birds — West, The Sibley Guide to Trees. . . Tip to the wise: Try picking up your Sibley Guides before David arrives. This, and other books by David Sibley, are in stock at CMBO right now. And for your shopping convenience, the Cape May Bird Observatory is open seven days a week from 9:30 am to 4:30pm. So head over to CMBO, THE place for

all your nature needs, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736). You can ask the staff for help, and you can pick up a FREE birding map and checklist. While you are there, scan the bookshelves for some bargains in the used and vintage books section (maybe even a slightly used field guide for the kitchen counter), look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory (which is FREE when you become a member), or pick up some of the newest HAWKS in Flight clothing for your wardrobe. Or just browse around; I’m sure something will catch your eye. If it’s nice, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it to Cape May, you’ll just have to let your fingers do the birding online at BirdCapeMay.org. We do mail order, too! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
