Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

Goodbye, Mr Mathis

The B-17 gets ready for takeoff at Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. Photograph by Jack Fichter

High Times SHE sat there with her silvery skin, inviting to fly us down to Rio — that is Rio Grande, New Jersey. She promised an adventure in the air and we bit. We’ll never regret it either. The Yankee Lady, a 1946, B-17 bomber equipped with turrets and 13 guns paid a visit to Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum June 10-12. Foul weather kept her on the ground for the first day of her visit. An oil leak in engine number one allowed her only one flight during her stay, and luckily we were aboard. Her crew, with help from NASW’s tools, lift and volunteers sent the B-17 to her next destination after two days of repairs with a

part shipped from Arkansas. A plane breaking down at NASW was a first, said Dr Joe Salvatore, Chairman and Executive Director of the museum. “This was the right place to do the repair,” said Salvatore, noting NASW was originally built as an aircraft repair facility during World War II. “We have all the equipment.” The B-17 is a four-engine bomber that helped win World War II. She was not set up for the comfort of her occupants. She sat on the taxiway at the county airport and shook as her engines revved to high RPM. Our seat was made of canvas and the seat belt was complicated enough to trap us in the seat for a few minutes after takeoff.

Crew Chief Norm Ellickson briefed passengers before boarding the plane. He told us we only needed to stay in our seats during takeoff and landing. We roamed to the glass nose used by a gunner, stood beside the bomb bay doors and walked into the cockpit standing behind the pilots. The plane had three pilots on board including twin brothers Jon and Jeff Rule who have flown commercial jets for more than 40 years. Another pilot, Duane Nelson, was at the controls while Jeff Rule talked to the passengers on this flight. Taking off from the county airport made us feel as if we were back in World War II and

OUR condolences go to the family, friends, colleagues and students of the late Paul Mathis, who for more than 30 years was an English teacher at Lower Cape May Regional High School, and also director of the school’s flourishing theater program. Mr Mathis had been ill for some time, prompting students, faculty and alumni to organize The Concert for Mr Mathis, a benefit at the school on July 13. Headlining the benefit concert will be Army of Freshmen, a Califoria-based rock band that was formed by LCMR graduate Chris Jay. Army of Freshmen have performed over 1,500 shows in 15 countries and 43 states, have been heard and seen in several films and TV shows and recently released their fifth full-length record. The bill also includes LCMR alumni Adam McDonough, a singer-songwriter now based in the New York City area, as well as Stellar Mojo, the popular South Jersey band that features LCMR alumni, and Old School, an allteacher band featuring some of Mr Mathis’ closest friends. The night will also feature a guest appearance by Jeff Coon, an LCMR graduate who has gone onto fame in the world of theater and first worked under Mr Mathis in several high school musicals. For tickets and more information, contact Mr J’s Music Shop at 609-886-4646. Proceeds will benefit the Mathis family and the Love of Linda Fund.

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Roger Flanagan of Park Ridge, NJ. How long have you been coming to Cape May? For 33 years! What do you like about it? I like the atmosphere of the town, the beaches, the restaurants, and the friendliness of visitors, locals, and the shop owners. What’s your favorite place? The Lobster House, including the Schooner. Least favorite thing about Cape May? The parking is always a pain, and it’s annoying to drive around all the bicyclists who ride in the street during the summer. What is your favorite restaurant? I like a lot of restaurants. The Lobster House, the C-View Inn, Harpoon Henry’s and the Harbor View, just to name a few. And your favorite store? I don’t have a particular favorite... I just enjoy the variety of the stores. What do you like about Exit Zero? I like the coverage of city hall, the Old Fogey column, and of course all the photos. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I honestly can’t think of a single thing. What’s your T-shirt size? Extra-large. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know the place this place, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for instructions on how to enter at facebook. com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 a part of a bombing mission as we rolled by NASW’s hangar and past the line of Caribou planes at Penn Turbo Aviation’s hangar. You don’t realize how rural Cape May County is until you fly over it and discover we live in a forested area between two bodies of water. In between the bay and ocean, the back bays and grass lands appear in serpentine patterns. You soon discover water towers are your best landmarks, the MUA tower at the airport, the freshly painted Madison Avenue tower in Cape May and the Coast Guard base tower. Other landmarks on the ground were visible on the flight: the Garden State Parkway, Morey’s Pier, Wildwoods Convention Center, Lund’s Fisheries, the Canyon Club, Cape May Convention Hall and the ferry terminal. A hatch over the radio room was left open in flight so we

could poke our heads out of the top of the plane and experience a 150 mile per hour breeze. “That’s our air conditioning,” joked Elickson. “We have overhead cables, please don’t pull on those, it upsets the pilots.” The sky from that vantage point looked bluer than we ever remember. The plane flies at an altitude of about 1,000 feet, so passengers can see the ground and area landmarks. “So we can see everything, we’re just going 150-160 miles per hour,” said Jon Rule. The bomb bay doors were opened in flight just off the coast of Wildwood offering a view of the ocean below as we stood by separated only by a chain. Sitting behind the big gun in the in the glassed-in nose turret brought to mind one of the crafts in Star Wars. We felt like Luke Skywalker blasting fighters from the Empire. Jeff Rule explained most of the B-17s were left in

Europe after the war and were scrapped. Only nine B-17’s still fly. The Yankee Lady had several other careers including a stint with the Coast Guard and private ownership doing aerial surveying and dropping fireretardant chemicals on forest fires. She appeared in the movie Tora, Tora, Tora. The Yankee Museum in Belleville, MI purchased the B-17 in 1985. Restoring the plane took nine years. It arrived at the museum’s hangar with fire retardant storage tanks, no guns or turrets and some less than regulation sheet metal repairs, said Jeff. The flight finished with what must have been the smoothest landing in history, nothing like the bouncy touchdowns of jetliners that sometimes make you count your teeth when the plane stops. The Rule brothers are sons of a World War II pilot. They were introduced to the plane

Flood Talk LET’S face the facts. If you live near the water, your premiums for Federal Flood Insurance are probably going up. Forget about Hurricane Sandy. She is not to blame. Higher flood insurance rates were in the works before Sandy produced her first raindrop. If you want to blame someone for coming increases in your flood insurance, blame Congress. They passed the Biggers-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012. For many homeowners, the federal government was subsidizing the

Thursday, June 20, 2013 cost of purchasing flood insurance. That will stop. The legislation will increase flood insurance premiums by 25 percent per year until they reach the actual cost. The idea of very expensive flood insurance premiums has homeowners worried and municipalities as well. Towns do not want to see “For Sale” signs gracing properties on every street near the water. Cape May City Council held a special meeting on June 15, a Saturday morning, and invited representatives from FEMA to address the issues of rising flood insurance premiums and new flood maps scheduled to be released for Cape May County by the end of July. Convention Hall was half full of mainly second home-owners. Patrick Holloway, a FEMA risk map outreach specialist, told the audience the agency has raw data but has not completed its analysis for Cape May County in order to release preliminary flood insurance rate

maps. FEMA has placed maps on its website for property owners that sustained storm damage. Those maps are going away to be replaced by Preliminary Work Maps which will lead up to Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps, according to Holloway. You will have to wait a bit longer for the final information on which flood zone your home is located in and how high your flood insurance rates may rise. The Preliminary Work Maps will include “overland wave modeling,” and take into consideration erosion of dunes. If you live in a V-zone, your property is deemed to have the possibility of being impacted by the “velocity of water.” Holloway said Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps will also include information for those who live near Delaware Bay. He said it is expected some V-zones on the bay side will become A-zones, which are

defined as having a one percent annual chance of being flooded and a 26% chance of flooding over the life of a 30-year mortgage. After the Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps are issued for our county, an open house will be held, giving homeowners an opportunity to review the information. That opens a 90-day appeal process for those who do not agree with the maps. New flood insurance rates will go in effect in 2015 after local communities adopt the maps, said Holloway. Dewana Davis, an insurance specialist with the National Flood Insurance Program, noted Cape May had a large population of persons owning a second home. She said second homeowners would be affected first by the flood insurance changes. The Biggers Waters Act will cause a 20 percent increase in

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 premiums annually for those who have their primary residence in Cape May if they sell their home, if their flood insurance lapses and they buy a new policy or if their property become substantially damaged by a storm, she said. The annual 20 percent increases will continue until the flood insurance rate reflects the actuary rates, what flood insurance should actually cost if it was not subsidized, said Davis. Owners of vacation homes or commercial properties will begin to see an increase in their premiums at renewal time as of October 2013. The increase will be 25 percent annually until it reaches the actuarial rates. Homes with flood insurance based on an elevation certificate will not see an increase in their premiums, said Davis. The flood insurance changes only apply to those

living in A- and Z- zones. If you live in a B-or X-zone, you will not experience the rate increases. Let’s imagine you currently live in a home in an area with a base flood elevation of 10 feet and your house sits at eight feet. There’s no requirement to elevate your house unless it is substantially damaged, said Davis. The bad news such a situation will affect your insurance premiums. Flood insurance policies will treat historical structures the same as other homes if they fall short of base flood elevation meaning higher premiums. Owners of historical homes are not required to raise the elevation of their homes, said Davis. FEMA will assist a homeowner in keeping their historic status if they decide to raise the elevation of their old home. Funding may be available from the Hazard Mitigation Program. The Perfect Stage

PERHAPS the greatest summer sin a kid can commit is to waste away the next three months on video games or trips to the nearest mall. Enter Cape May Stage’s Discovery Theatre Camps, which don’t just fill a little bit of the void left by another school year ended but, in doing so,

empower kids in more ways than one. “Kids have stories that are important, and not necessarily heard by their peers or adults,” says Camp Director Beth Ryan Troxell. “Getting up on stage provides an opportunity for them to be heard. They learn that they can belong and be someone, not necessarily actors, but people who can invent or reinvent themselves. That’s very powerful.”

a Radio camp from August 6-9. (Troxell in collaboration with WCFA will broadcast student voices in an exciting radio play for all to hear.) Students ages nine through 12 will meet from 9am until noon and campers ages 13 through 16 will meet from 1pm until 4pm. All sessions will take place at Cape May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse located at the corner of Bank & Lafayette Streets. Students may opt to enroll for one week or may choose to build upon their first experience and participate in both sessions. The cost of enrollment is $185 per week. A 10% discount is available for registering a sibling and/or for the second week of enrollment. Enrollment is limited to 15 campers per each session. Beth — founder of Hill Actors on Stage, an afterschool program which allows children to perform the classics, and a full-time teacher of drama at Milton Hershey, a residential school for at-risk students in Pennsylvania — says she’s thrilled to be leading Cape May Stage’s Discovery Camps for the second year running, as last year was such a memorable experience… both for the participants, and for her. “Having a student write you a note at the end of her time that says ‘Now I know what I want to do with my life’… that can change your whole outlook,” she told us. As for the students who may not be too keen on this whole drama thing? “That doesn’t throw me off,” she says. “At the school where I teach full-time, every student has to take drama at

one point or another, so I’m used to the moaning and groaning, and you have to be sensitive to that. You just take the time to figure out how a kid who is terribly shy, for instance, fits into the whole dynamic.” A dynamic that includes creative game playing, story-

telling, acting, and playwrighting… meaning there is a great deal of niches to be found. “Watching them find their voices,” Beth says, “that’s extraordinary.” Cape May Stage’s Discovery Summer Theatre Camp runs July 2-5 and July 9-12 with

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a centuryold chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.”

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

O YOU know what marvel I found when beach combing the other morning? Can you guess? What’s that? You did not know I was a beach comber? Why, next you will say you have not heard of Cape May’s sacred tradition of just that very thing! And I do not mean the tractor that trundles up and down our fine sands dragging a rake, with which to snag litter, discarded unmentionables and unconscious Shoebies. No, I mean the great and hallowed Society of Beach Combers. They came over on the first ships from London, but of course were not combers of beaches then, but of sewers. Toshers, as they were called, were those lithe little lads and lasses who scoured the underbelly of that great city looking for lost coins, knocked-out gold teeth, discarded jewels and hastily dropped ill-gotten gains. In Cape May they found no maze of sewers, but miles of beaches with what Combers call “nodes”: those rare places on Earth where tides and currents conspire to deposit

all manner of riches on the sand every high tide. And our sacred band have shouldered the duty of collecting the items that appear there and stowing them away for safety, lest people come to harm/mischief/riches. I remember the time a Nazi U-Boat was washed up, with what turned out to be an Enigma Machine aboard. And the time we found the remains of that Flying Saucer that escaped from Area 52 (Yes, 52. Do you really think there is not something even more secret that Area 51?). These aren’t even our most remarkable

finds. We have found all sorts of treasures on these beaches over the years, including: a case of Faberge Eggs, a Perpetual Motion Machine, Walt Disney’s cryogenically frozen corpse, Jimmy Hoffa (in 387 separate boxes), a bookcase of original works from the Great Library at Ephesus (with handwritten annotations by Alexander Of Macedonia) and several functional Frankenstein’s monsters. Not to mention a king’s ransom in gold, gems and the like. But sometimes, darker things wash up: the original Curse of Wildwood (by a witch, who condemned the people of that city to forever be afflicted both mentally and physically), The Black Spot (which kills anyone who touches it) and a score of genies in lamps. Those last are dreadful chaps, who truly deserve eternity in a tiny vase. But this week, I found something of inestimable value, and of such rarity as to topple empires and unseat kings. Yes, friends, I discovered an unused, pristine, sealed liquor license for our fair city. It makes the Holy Grail look dull. (Which, by chance, I found yesterday.)

Destiny West of Lower Cape May Regional is making the most of her freshman year. As well as actively participating in Student Council and Key Club, West recently completed a stand-out year as an athlete, on the girls’ soccer, basketball, and track teams. West credits her mother, Sue Daniels, for being her “biggest supporter” and instilling in her a good work ethic, which explains why West is among the top in her class academically. As West continues on at Lower Cape May Regional, she will remain as an example of what it means to be a well-rounded student. Just as running has become a “perfect fit” for West, so has she become the perfect fit for a school looking for outstanding students. STORY: ALYSSA LEININGER

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

E

VERY few years, a new celebrity will be in the news for having come clean over an issue realted to mental health. Even though the issue of, let’s say, depression is spoken about more freely now than ever, and all of us know someone who is dealing with it, the photos accompanying the story are usually less than flattering. Instead of their normally beautiful or handsome headshot we see wide eyes, tangled hair, blurry long shots of them running supposedly into the hospital. Mental health exists on a spectrum just as physical health does. Some conditions require extreme measures analogous to open heart surgery, but most aren’t as serious and can be dealt with using therapy. While we never demonize the heart patient we have a long history of putting mental health patients in a different category. Imagine being sick and not being able to tell anyone for fear of being labeled “crazy” or “dangerous.” It’s a frightening reality for many people. If you are a male, gainfully employed, college educated, with health insurance, under age 24, married, and live in North Dakota,

the CDC stats say you’re less likely to experience depression. On the other hand, if you are between the age of 46 and 64 and live in Mississippi, your odds just went up. Overnine percent of the general population reported being depressed within the two week period prior to being asked the question, “Have you ever been depressed?” In the early 90s, Prozac, an anti-depressant, started being prescribed to relieve symptoms of mild to severe depression. It was a miracle drug for many people who reported a distinct change in their mood and anxiety levels and general ability to feel happy. A number of similar drugs to treat similar symptoms

COME CHECK OUT ALL OF OUR NEW DESIGNS!

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

soon followed and doctors were given new tools to help those formally considered “nervous”, “blue”, and “moody”. More importantly tens of thousands of people worldwide were given a chance at a normal life. While Prozac has been extremely beneficial, it has not come without some unfortunate costs, such as suicide. Some people were actually made worse by it. But if you balance the two it seems clear that far more benefit came from it than harm. Another powerful tool in dealing with depression is a rigorous workout regimen that includes cardio and weight training. You can’t think of anything other than survival when you are pushing really hard. It’s cleansing, too. It lasts far beyond the workout itself and you can become addicted, in a way, to the endorphine surge that comes right after a killer workout. Shutting the brain down this way is similar to meditation but easier to accomplish. If that doesn’t do it for you, try walking in the woods. Nature walks (done without a cell phone!) are incredibly relaxing. This is your chance to be a like a little kid again. Play in the creek, skip a rock, get dirty, pick flowers, or lie in the grass and stare at the stars.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, After years of unsuccessful dating through conventional means, I finally decided to give online dating a try. Evidently, I have hit the jackpot, as I have met three women in as many weeks, all of whom seem wonderful. I have two questions: 1 – How do I juggle them, and do I have to tell them about one another right away? I guess that’s two questions... as you can see, I’m not really used to being in this position. And question 2: Am I a “playa”? — Puzzled Dear Puzzled, First, the Answer Lady would like to congratulate you on your success. Some people will sit and bemoan their single state without ever taking the proverbial bull by his proverbial horns and doing something about it. The Answer Lady has heard good things about online dating, and

knows of at least one successful marriage as a result of it. Now to your questions: these women are not inanimate objects to be “juggled,” but if you are asking about whether one can have two successful dates in one evening, well yes of course. Perhaps you can meet Bachelorette #1 one for a drink early in the evening at Oyster Bay — a cocktail or two at their gorgeous newly-expanded bar is just the ticket for a casual meeting. Then you can meet Bachelorette #2 for a

The Movie Column

N

This week, Cape May Film Society President Dottie Knapp reviews “Now You See Me”

OW You See Me is a fun summer movie, meant to be enjoyed with popcorn (so go to an early show with matinee prices so you can at least afford the small size) and maybe a bag of Twizzlers — this film is nothing more and nothing less. Other critics have panned the film for having too many twists or that the special effects were no real thrill. But I disagree. In the beginning we meet four characters: Jessie Eisenberg, a street magician who specializes in sleight of hand; Woody Harrleson, a mentalist; Isla Fisher, an escape artist; and Dave Franco (James’ younger brother) a street magician and pick-pocket. Getting to watch each of them perform their specialty is a treat, and I wish they could have given us at least 15 minutes or more on each of them, but then we couldn’t get on with the movie. These four magicians are mysteriously brought together by an invitation on a Tarot card, and within a year’s time have become the Four Horsemen, performing large scale

Go see Now You See Me, um now... magic tricks à la David Copperfield. The first “trick” involves a bank heist which is a joy to watch. We meet even more characters: Michael Cain playing a financier, Morgan Freeman a magician debunker and my favorite, Mark Ruffalo doing one of his best unshowy performances as the FBI agent who reluctantly gets the case. He is then joined by a very lovely Melanie Laurent an Interpol agent (Bet you can’t guess where that relationship

is going). From there, we get more magic tricks, car chases (really only one) and trips to New Orleans, Paris and New York. Director Louis Leterrier has directed films that just don’t seem to make the top of the charts but have style and substance that is unmistakable: Transporter (2002 – along with a sequel), The Incredible Hulk (2008), and Clash of the Titans (2010). You can watch this movie two ways: trying to figure out who or what are red herrings; or do what I did — watch it, enjoy it, and don’t ask too many questions at the end of it. Remember, “the more you see, the easier it will be to fool you.” I want to personally invite each and every one of you to the free screening of Film Camp movies on Friday, June 28 at 7pm, at the West Cape May Borough Hall. No sleight of hand here, only a great group of kids pulling together some of the best films you will see here in the county. Refreshments will be served, and there may even be a chance to win some prizes!

Activity Of The Week

S

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Cape May Designer Show House

OME people are really into houses. When they aren’t watching the home and garden channel, they choose their movies based on the decorating – they’ll notice the interior design of the Purge house, they know who designed the furniture for Iron Man, and they can tell you exactly what Peggy on Mad Men would pay for her rat-infested apartment. If you’re one of these people, Cape May’s Designer Show House is for you. Each year, the Designer Show House takes over one Cape May home, and transforms it into a work of art. Designers from Cape May and the surrounding area make their marks on more than a dozen living spaces. This year, the featured home is Cavalier Cottage, located at 1109 Washington Street. The Victorian-style Cavalier Cottage is brand new, and it combines features like a large wrap-around porch and a cupola with all the comforts of modern life. There’s a cabinet-filled kitchen, a family room with a fireplace, a home office, and a formal parlor

Graphic prints are very popular trend in home design this year. downstairs, and two bedrooms, a bath and a master suite upstairs. Take a tour and learn the latest trends in home decor — I saw my first concrete countertop at a Designer Show House, circa 2007. A tour may help you decide on the paint color for your bedroom, or provide inspiration for that blank wall, or introduce you to a new artist. You may find a contractor to provide air conditioning or window treatments, or a source to supply your home

with just the right accessory. Or you may just enjoy the home as a work of art. Cavalier Cottage is right across the street from the Emlen Physick Estate, the home of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC). All proceeds from the Designer Show House benefit MAC, which promotes the restoration, interpretation and cultural enrichment of greater Cape May for its residents and visitors. The house will be open for tours from June 21 through October 31. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children; self-guided tours from 1-4 daily, guided tours Sunday Friday at 7. Take advantage of the “Tour & Tea” Luncheon Package, and you can combine a classic three-course tea luncheon at the Carriage House Cafe with your tour. $35 includes tax and gratuity, and parking is free. Call 609-884-5404 for more information. “Good artists copy, great ones steal,” as Picasso said. Steal some great ideas from the Designer Show House. Next week: Take a Tiny Cruise

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

CHASE is a handsome three-year-old purebred chocolate lab. He is a sweet dog, but he becomes anxious when there is a lot of excitement and noise. For this reason, Chase will do best in a quiet, adult-only home. If you live a quiet life, Chase will make a wonderful companion for you! He will be shown by appointment only. Call the shelter at 609-465-8923 to schedule your appointment. Chase’s adoption fee is $95.

«

SABLE is a handsome purebred Chow Chow! He is very well-behaved and social. He does have a little trouble seeing, so he tends to get caught off guard often. Sable is not used to children, so he should not go to a home with kids. His owners were senior citizens who couldn’t care for him any longer, and he missses them dearly. But he can’t wait to find a new home and owner! Sable’s adoption fee is only $8!

BRADY is very unique – he has only three legs! You might think that this would make him a high maintenance dog… Quite the opposite is true! All Brady needs is a nice new home and an owner with a warm lap where he can rest his head. He just wants to go home, because he is overwhelmed by the noise and bustle of the shelter. It makes him very nervous and scared. Ask to meet him! His adoption fee is only $8!

Lend Me A Tenor by Ken Ludwig

directed by Chris Dolman COMEDY/ FARCE

It’s 1934 and the Grand Opera Company of Cleveland is poised to welcome the world famous tenor, Il Stupendo, for a highlyanticipated one-night-only performance. But when the star arrives late and falls over dead... what happens? He must be replaced! The show must go on! Yet, are the reports of his demise premature? This madcap, door-slamming, plot-twisting screwball comedy of mistaken identities spins out of control!
