Bird Droppings

N

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

OW is a great time to attract hummingbirds into your yard by putting up a hummingbird feeder. By July, the young ones are dispersing and migration will continue into September. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are actually very common in New Jersey and when this year’s crop of young fledge, the population will be at its peak. Even if hummingbirds don’t nest near your home, migrants can and do turn up almost anywhere, including urban areas (even offshore). But don’t even think about putting up a hummingbird feeder unless you are prepared to maintain it. This means replacing sugar water daily in hot weather. Sugar water ferments and after a snoot full of alcohol, hummingbirds will avoid your feeder. Instructions about proper feeder maintenance and the correct ratio of sugar to water come with most feeders. Most authorities use a ratio of four parts water to one part sugar. So four cups of clean water and one cup of everyday regular white processed sugar. Do not use powdered sugar, artificial sweetener or honey

and PLUHLEESE don’t add red food coloring. A red feeder is enough to catch the bird’s eye. Boiling the water before adding the sugar will slow down the fermentation process and dissolve the sugar more quickly. But wait for the liquid to cool at least to room temperature before pouring it into the feeder and putting it outside. Another good trick is to make enough sugar water for several days and store the

reserve in a clean container in your refrigerator to keep it fresh. Hang your feeder in the open, high enough to be out of the reach of cats and away from windows to prevent a bird strike. Don’t be surprised to see other birds; Orioles are particularly fond of sugar water. And some feeders have ports large enough to accommodate oriole bills. Commercial feeders are not expensive but some makes and models are better than others; easier to fill or clean, or less likely to attract insects. There are a variety of styles sold at Cape May Bird Observatory, like the HummZinger. If you want to see one in action, visit CMBO at 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point (just off Lighthouse Ave). Hummingbirds appear every 15 minutes or so. Of course the best way to attract hummingbirds to your yard is to landscape with lots of hummingbird-friendly flowers. Local naturalist Pat Sutton is an authority on the subject. On the New Jersey Audubon website (njaudubon.org), Pat has a two part article “How to Create a Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden.”

Craig LaBan

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a centuryold chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.”

Choices for lunch with a friend:

#1 No view (unless you consider the parking

lot a view). The usual menu of burgers, salads, wraps and lots (lots) of fried stuff.      Nothing to do when you’re finished  except get back to your car before the meter runs out.

mansion, beautiful lawns and gardens, even an herb garden a few steps from your table. LIVE MUSIC

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

IGHTNING isn’t at all what it used to be. That thought came to me the other day when I was walking with young Albert during a thunderstorm and happened to be struck by a bolt of the damned stuff. It’s not the first time — my habit of walking with my silver-topped walking cane, which contains a sword of the finest Toledo steel, in all weathers, does tend to attract lightning, though usually my rubbersoled Doc Marten boots insulate me sufficiently that at worst the tips of my mustache catch alight. On this occasion the bolt struck me at the exact moment I was striking an automobile that had parked improperly (I detest untidiness, and this particular was three degrees from being flush with the curb), and the charge impacted the top of my head, rushed down my left arm (I keep my right hand free to reach for my Luger pistol, a souvenir of the raid on Hitler’s bunker in 1941), through my sword stick and into to rashly parked car, which promptly exploded.

I think that the two opposing forces actually saved my life: the blast wave from the gasoline met the electrostatic charge of the lightning midway between us and both canceled each other out. Certainly, when I regained consciousness 100 yards down the street, hanging upside down from a fine larch tree by my smoking coat-tails, I was remarkably unharmed. Albert, too, was singed but intact, and was licking my face (I was inches from the ground, upside down) in relief. Or perhaps because he sensed a possible opportunity

for dinner — Yorkies are frequently the only survivors of shipwrecks or remote expeditions as they will, when the need arises, eat weaker team members. Anyway, when he sensed I was alive and in a position to fight back, he feigned great joy. The only damage I sustained was on the cuffs of my pants and jacket, which were alight, and the top of my stovepipe hat, which was exploded up and out like a comedy cigar. Also, my glass eye had picked up a large static charge and was revolving at high speed in its socket, making me dizzy but affording an interesting view of the inside of my head, which was darker and smaller than I had expected. This experience was both pleasing and also a sad indictment of modern times. In my day, lightning bolts were so powerful that they left molten craters in the ground and would fry whole towns in a second. It made re-animation experiments much simpler, I must say: today, you try to bring life to a stitched-together corpse and the ConEd bill is so high the DEA arrive looking for one of three illegal marijuana factories.

“Cape May A-Z” New Alphabet book featuring Cape May mosaics created by our community!!

NTIL recently, I was pretty cavalier about finding a tick on me or my pets. I would simply brush it off, drown it in the sink or pull it off and not give it much thought afterwards except to inspect the area briefly and hope for the best. I was under the impression that there had to be a red, bulls-eye rash and that Lyme-carrying ticks were usually found in the New England area. I was wrong on both counts; but not alone. At least 20 percent of all infected tick bites don’t leave a rash and the area of where infected ticks are now commonly found has, and continues to, grow, now reaching as far south as Florida. According to an article in The New Yorker magazine by Michael Specter, in 2009, the reported incidents of Lyme were 38,000... or three times those reported in 1991. Experts believe the real number is five to 10 times higher. Specter goes on to report that before 1977, Lyme was thought to be Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis. It was prevalent around Lyme, Connecticut and eventually discovered to be caused by the previously unknown spirochete

borrelia which is a bacterium. “Those facts are undisputed. But nearly everything else — symptoms, diagnosis, prevalence, behavior of the borrelia spirochete after it infects the body, and correct approach to treatment — is contested bitterly and publicly,” Specter says. Most infections seem to respond to conventional treatment with antibiotics but for many it’s a long and painful process with years of drug therapy and, for some, crippling results. (While writing this article, a member of the gym told me about her teenage son who takes cancer and malaria drugs to keep his immune system in check after multiple bouts of Lyme.) Post Treatment Lyme

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

Disease Syndrome is a phenomenon which affects up to 20 percent of patients who continue to suffer long after treatment has ended. Some experts believe that the bacteria can hide out in the body for years.( Many call that idea, “nonsense”.) These experts are part of the “Chronic Lymes” faction. The same article sites DR. Richard Horowitz of Hyde Park, New York who has seen over 12,000 patients with tick-borne ailments. He uses diet and supplements to “starve the bacteria”. He is seen as a pariah to the “antibiotics only” faction. The process by which the tick infects? It first releases antiinflamatory chemicals and antihistamines to numb the area (nice of it). It’s barbed mouth bites and secrets a glue-like substance to adhere. It injects the borrelia and other pathogens into the blood stream. (Here is where it gets sinister and ingenious.) It changes form, cloaking itself in the surface proteins of the ticks saliva. Then, like HIV, the bacterium hijacks the immune system. It leaves the blood stream and hides out in parts of the body where fewer circulating antibodies can reach it. Beware the tiny tick!

Dear Answer Lady, You’ve addresses the issue of being interested in someone at work, but not the issue of working with someone with whom you’re involved. I’m waitressing at a local restaurant for the season; my boyfriend is the chef there. He’s very stern at work, barking out orders, being gruff and unlikable... I know it’s his “work persona,” but I take it personally when he’s screaming at me to pick up an order with a big knife in his hand. He says that my request to treat me more civilly because we’re dating is “asking for special treatment.” Is it? — Sally Server Dear Sally, Your question strikes close to the Answer Lady’s heart, as she experienced this exact same scenario many years ago when she met the chef she would later marry while working as a waitress. This did not sit well with the younger, feistier Answer Lady, as she had difficulties cozying up to someone who had spent the prior few hours screaming at her. He, too, told her that she was asking for “special treatment,” and that he was obliged to treat her in the same “Attila the Hun” fashion that he treated all the other employees. The Movie Column

I

This week, Cape May Film Society President Dottie Knapp reviews “The Heat”

JUST have to say this: I f@*!#&% love Melissa McCarthy. If you were offended by that particular sentence, then don’t go see her new film, The Heat. This movie stars McCarthy as a swaggering “don’t cross me” Boston detective and Sandra Bullock as a by-the-book FBI agent who is disliked by her peers. While Bullock believes you can catch more bees with honey and works hard at understanding her suspects, McCarthy threatens to shoot them in their private parts if they don’t tell her what she wants to know. If you can have buddy movies that are “bromances” then this is a “sismance”, kind of like Thelma and Louise with a good outcome. It is great to see two women getting to play the parts that usually go to men such as (from my era) Danny Glover and Mel Gibson or [insert appropriate names for your era]. The Heat was written by Katie Dippold who writes for Parks and Recreation and directed by Paul Feig who directed Bridesmaids. He understands to just keep the camera trained on McCarthy and let her go.

You’ve heard of bromances — well, this movie is a sismance. Bullock does the same thing in this movie that Jason Batemen did in Identity Theft, play the straight man and let the laughs begin. My husband, Mal, thinks that Sandra Bullock is America’s sweetheart. He commented that for someone with her career (which includes an Oscar) being able to step back in the movie and share the star role is a credit to her as a person. Did you know that IMDb (the Internet Movie Database, for those who don’t know)

has created a Parents Guide where the public can describe the facts regarding relevant scenes? It covers Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes. So after checking it out, I want you to know that, in The Heat, there are 158 F-words, four obscene hand gestures, six sexual reference, 54 scatological terms, six anatomical terms, and 13 mild obscenities. (Are you getting the idea?). There are stereotypical references to men, women, crime lords, Bulgarians and other ethnic groups, but in my mind the most egregious is directed toward snior citizens. And finally, fight scenes are discussed, it’s said that a mature 12-year-old could handle these if they have seen other inappropriate movies. (I think someone let a little personal feeling creep into that comment). So parents, this is really a good site. We all have our standards of appropriateness when it comes to movies. If it’s acceptable for your viewing group, The Heat is worth a watch.

Activity Of The Week

T

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Tales Of The Victorians

HIS is how to spend an afternoon: you arrive at a charming inn or shop after a day frolicking in the waves, and relax into a chair. Someone offers you a treat, and tells you a story. It doesn’t matter how old you are — storytime is magical. That is the reason the performers behind “Tales of the Victorians” have been entertaining Cape May for 24 years. Every Thursday, actors from the East Lynne Theater Company share classic American stories at some of Cape May’s prettiest establishments. They are following an ancient tradition — humans have been telling stories since ancient times, and, according to scientists, the human brain is hardwired to respond positively to a well-told tale. In the Victorian era, stories like those by Hans Christian Andersen were very popular. Andersen’s stories for children initially attracted little notice in his native Denmark, and some were published in America first. His third collection, including “The Little Mermaid” and “The Emperor’s New

Hans Christian Andersen is the source of many of our favorite childhood stories. Clothes” was published in 1837, and the first translations in English appeared in 1846. They soon gained fans around the world (including Charles Dickens). Works by Beatrix Potter, AA Milne and Kenneth Grahame show Andersen’s influence. Andersen, like Dickens, had seen the struggles of children during the Industrial Revolution first hand, and his stories show a respect for juvenile understanding and a willingness to include a hint of darkness.

Children’s stories are not the focus of “Tales of the Victorians.” The works by American authors like O. Henry and Louisa May Alcott are sophisticated yet family friendly, and the performers bring them to life with flair. East Lynne Theater Company is an Equity theater dedicated to the American spirit on stage, and these “tantalizing tales along with tea-time treats” bring that spirit out into the community. You will also get to sample the hospitality of a different innkeeper each week. Tickets are $10, and children under 12 are free. All performances start at 4pm. Make a reservation by calling the East Lynne Theater company office at 609-884-5898, and pay at the door. Upcoming locations are as follows: July 18 at the Peter Shields Inn. July 25 at the Cliveden Inn. August 1 at the Victorian Lace Inn. August 8 at the Inn of Cape May. August 15 at the Peter Shields Inn. August 22 at the Victorian Lace Inn. And August 29 at the Blue Rose Inn and Restaurant. This Thursday, treat yourself to a welltold tale. Next week: Parasailing

KING is a whip-smart, frisky, majestic-looking boxer/pit mix. In August 2012 King was approximately 9-months old and he may have been abandoned by his owner at that time. He was a little anxious around strangers, but once he warms up, everyone finds him quite charming, playful and sweet. King is not recommended for a home with very young children, only because he doesn’t know his own strength. $95.

«

KRINGLE is a handsome boxer and pit bull mix and is approximately four years old. He loves the great outdoors! He would prefer to be with a human who loves the outdoors as well. Kringle has come a long way and really grown while under the shelter’s care. He would do well in a home with older children who can understand the importance of reinforcing his training. Kringle’s adoption fee is only $10.

«

FROSTY is a very friendly, fun-loving brindle and white-colored sevenmonth-old pit bull puppy. Frosty has a sweet temperament, and is high energy and playful. Like all puppies, he has a lot to learn, so his new owner must provide him with regular training and daily exercise, along with lots of patience. Frosty will become a wonderful companion in the process. The adoption fee is $95.

Exit Zero A SPECIAL ISSUE TO COMMEMORATE THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF CAPE MAY’S SPRIGHTLY SHEET

¯

SUMMER 2013

Happy 10th Birthday To Cape May’s Peppiest Periodical! WELCOME to a very special edition of Exit Zero which celebrates the 10th anniversary of our launch. Yep, we first hit the streets on July 4, 2003. It’s been that long. Regular readers will notice a couple things... 1. We’re a LOT bigger than our regular edition — almost four times the size. This is because, to celebrate the historical theme, we wanted to look and feel like an old Cape May newspaper from the 19th century. This

theme is carried through into our ads, which were brilliantly executed by our graphic designer Doree Bardes. 2. This issue ain’t free! Why? Because we spoil you enough with the weekly edition. You can’t get EVERYTHING for free! It’s still a bargain at $1! To help us celebrate, we have featured 10 kids (either locals or regular visitors) who are also 10 years old this year. You will see their photographs featured through-

out the issue. Snappy idea, eh? What you’ll also find on these pages is a selection of some of our favorite articles of the past few years, which we feel provide a useful, inspiring package that’s meant to help you get the best out of your Cape May vacation — or your everyday life, if you’re a local. Enjoy the paper. Enjoy Cape May. JACK WRIGHT Editor/Publisher

WELCOME TO A NEW VOICE IN CAPE MAY YOU can buy T-shirts in town featuring the slogan, “Cape May, A drinking town with a Victorian problem.” Leaving aside the obvious point that those kinds of T-shirts, like novelty answermachine messages, stop being funny after around a tenth of a second, they still provide the kernel of a thought. Cape May doesn’t have a Victorian problem, but we at Exit Zero, the town’s new weekly entertainment newspaper, think it has something of an

image problem. The pioneering folks who saved Cape May in the 1970s by getting together to preserve its Victorian heritage, in the face of a blinkered city council, cannot receive enough praise, and their legacy lives on through the good works of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. In fact, it’s hardly a legacy since most of them are still alive, kicking and contributing as much as ever. However... Cape May is more than just the finest collection of Victorian architecture in the country. It’s America’s original beach

resort, and we think that’s an image that needs to be cultivated. Not to the detriment of the Victorian message, but in conjunction with it. We often hear people in this town waxing on about Martha’s Vineyard, the Hamptons and Key West. And to be sure, they’re all beautiful beach resorts. But think about it: what do these places have that Cape May lacks (okay, we’ll give Key West the nod for total hours of sunshine)? As well as boasting a Victorian wonderland that ranks among the finest Continued on Page Two

F YOU’VE been reading the papers lately, maybe you’re bracing yourself for insect catastrophe. We’re referring to the 17-year cicadas known as Brood II which have been growing underground for — you guessed it — 17 years. They’ll emerge locuststyle — up to one billion of them per square mile, according to the The Huffington Post — when the soil reaches 64 degrees. A repulsive siege, in the oh-so-scary words of the news media, will take over the east coast, from the Carolinas to New York, essentially ruining your summer and your lunch. The Philly Post predicted a Garden State Parkway covered in “an apocalyptic swarm of screeching bug-missiles on rumspringa.” So… should you be hiding your children? Packing up and heading west? Plugging your ears with balls of cotton when you sleep? We called an expert to find out what we can expect in Cape May. “You can expect to be disappointed,” said Michael Raupp, Professor of Entomology at the University of Maryland. Uh-oh, we thought… We’re really in for it. “Cape May is a little out of the range. The nearest counties to you guys that will experience the Brood are Atlantic, Cumberland, and Burlington.” Huh? Then why should we disappointed, we asked of Michael. Sounds to us like we dodged a bullet. Or, in the words of The Philly Post, billions of bug missiles. We’re avoiding a summer of sweeping crunchy exoskeletons from our porches... that’s what the 17-years leave behind after they mate and die, according to National Geographic. And we’re bypassing the deafening song the male cicadas create when courting the females… a noise that will Continued On Page 15

APE May is a little like that annoying kid in high school who received all the awards — dean’s list, MVP, perfect attendance, you name it. Our National Historic Landmark city and its assets have been honored time and again. Remember our placement on Budget Travel’s “10 Coolest Small Towns in America” list in 2012? Or how about TripAdvisor naming Sunset Beach the 24th best sandy stretch in the nation? The Albert Stevens Inn on Myrtle Avenue? It’s 18th in the world’s B&b rankings, also according to TripAdvisor. And the Mission Inn on New country. Jersey Avenue?

Number 25 in the

You might think another award would be ho-hum at this point, but the most recent honor bestowed upon our charmed city — a number five designation among the Top 10 Best Beach Towns in the country, according to a recent Parents magazine article — has us buzzing. Never mind that Parents has a readership over two million strong and a Facebook page with nearly one million likes — it’s the methodology behind their Top 10 piece that caught our attention. “I use the TripAdvisor service, myself,” article author and Parents Contributing Editor Karen Cicero told us. “And of course we value but our surveys are not typically comprised of only that.” people’s anecdotal experiences,

Instead, Karen, who says the piece had a year-long gestation period, started out by removing all towns with poor water quality from the running, using information provided by the National Resources Defense Council. “I was surprised,” she said. “We began with hundreds, and eliminated about 50 percent right there.” After that, Karen knocked out all beach spots with no lifeguarding services (at least another third). “Parents are watching their own kids on the beach,” Karen said, “but rip currents can happen any time, and having a trained professional is important.” At this point, Cape May was still in the running, so Karen called the city to see about one not-so-

minor detail — whether or not we suffered great devastation, like so many of our unfortunate neighbors to the north, at the hands of Hurricane Sandy. “It made me very happy to hear that Cape May had been spared,” said Karen, who is herself a Cape May vacation vet. “I have a 10-year-old daughter, Katie, who we brought to Cape May about two years ago,” she told us. “I live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and my family has vacationed often in Wildwood, but I always wanted to try Cape May, and I was charmed by it, from beginning to end. We loved the old-fashioned carnival nights offered by Congress Hall, the welcoming vibe of the city. My daughter still asks to go back.”

(Check out a blog post on Karen’s Cape May experience by visiting p a r e n t s . c o m / b l o g s /g o o d y blog/2013/05/33709/.) Karen was especially impressed with the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue. “It was Katie’s favorite memory,” she told us. “She participated in a program that allows kids to cast their net into the ocean, and discover the little critters that come into it. The experience stuck with her. And I remember thinking how affordable it was.” It is inland activities like this that were also taken into account
