Talk Of The Town

RAMBLINGS, GOSSIP, SHOUT-OUTS, AND OCCASIONALLY IMPORTANT ODDS AND ENDS

If you’re not satisfied with the amount of beach time you’ve had this season... it’s time to get on that...

Ride above the water with Cape May Airboat Adventures

WHEN you live here, you feel no sense of urgency when it comes to making plans for carriage riding or lighthouse climbing or beach bathing or any number of activities labeled “touristy.” Inevitably, Labor Day sneaks up on you, and you’re caught shaking your head, lamenting the fact that you’ve missed out on so much of what makes Cape Island, Cape Island. So, last weekend, we made a point to have a bona fide tourist experience (full disclosure: Exit Zero was hosting friends from New York, and nothing gets us out-on-the-town like an opportunity to see our city through out-of-towner eyes.) Despite a terrible (and inaccurate) weather forecast, we hit Congress Hall’s pool bar on Friday afternoon, where we sipped Palomas (delicious grapefruit soda, tres agave reposado, St Germain, and lime juice concoctions) under a beautiful sky (take that, weather.com) and met well-traveled guests who told us they prefer the laidback vibe of Cape May to the fancy-pants pretentions of the Hamptons (take that, Long Island). That evening, we had a four-course dinner on the porch of the Red Store – thank you Aaren Senico for the attentive service, and Hawk Haven Vineyard for making your wine available for purchase at this BYO (we ran out of our champagne long before entrees hit the table). Saturday, we biked to the beach, where we wore too little sunscreen (typical tourist mistake), did crossword puzzles, dove through thigh-high waves, listened to little kids discovering kite-flying for the first time, and generally decompressed. We followed that up with a sunset airboat ride (read our review below), and reliably good fish tacos at Cabanas, where the playlist was delightfully 90s. Our thoughts: Ace of Base is highly underrated, and there is no kind of tired like that outHave you in-the-great-outdoors-all-day brought your kind of tired. mutt to Tisha’s Sunday, we worked up an appetite antiquing before brunch Fine Dining restaurant on at the Blue Pig Tavern, where we met young server Patrick the mall yet? McGinn; you’ll recognize him by his made-for-doingvoiceovers baritone. Patrick, a Philly native, told us he’s a Marine who’s leaving in one month to once again resume active duty (his offtime has been cut short by trouble in Afghanistan) but we won’t be surprised if we see him (or, rather, hear him) on the big screen one day. (Don’t worry; he’s

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: John Augustine III of Mountaintop, PA. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been coming to Cape May for approximately 37 years. I’ve been vacationing there for as long as I’ve been alive. What do you like about it? I love the beaches, the family atmosphere, and the restaurants. It’s just an all-around great place to vacation. What’s your favorite place? The beach. Least favorite thing about Cape May? There’s not much I don’t like... But my least favorite thing has got to be the parking meter fines. What is your favorite restaurant? My favorite restaurant is definitely the Pier House. And your favorite store? Um... Collier’s, if that counts! What do you like about Exit Zero? It’s the first thing we pick up in town once we get in. It’s useful, first of all. And it’s entertaining. It tells us what’s going on, where to go, what bands are playing, and so on. If you want to know what’s going on in Cape May, you’ll pick up an Exit Zero. What’s your least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Nothing really. Except that, sometimes, by the time we get there they are all gone. What’s your T-shirt size? I’m an XL. Want to join our army of subscribers — there are hundreds of them in nearly 30 states! Call us on 609-770-8479 or buy one online at ezstore.us. It’s $50 for all 47 BW issues PLUS our six color issues.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above. If you think you know this establishment, you could win a gift certificate for a local business. aware of his gift; he used to take advantage of it in order to play hooky from school as a young boy, when he could easily pretend to be his father (Ferris Bueller style) on the phone.) Stay safe, Patrick. We topped off the meal with ice cream from Cape May Popcorn Factory, and while we waited for our scoops, an employee told us little kids have been coming into the shop and creating some mischief — rearranging all of the labels on the ice cream case, so that what customers think is banana is actually peanut butter swirl. Oh, the audacity. From there, we shopped for a Cape May-printed muscle shirt on the Washington Street Mall, a souvenir one of our guests wanted to buy her father. All we can say is this: what is up with the newest trend in tank tops for men: giant cut-outs from armpit to waist. Is it a fashion statement, or air conditioning? And isn’t a sleeveless shirt on a man showing off enough skin already? Just some questions for you to ponder the next time you take a total tourist weekend for yourself — something, we think, you should do sooner rather than later… trust us. ¯ WE HAVE never walked on water... but we HAVE glided above it, thanks to one of the coolest attractions at Cape May Inlet Marina: Airboat Adventures. Last weekend, owner/captain Marc Zitter took us for a spin Continued On Page 16 ?

throughout (and on top of) the island’s marshes in his airboat, a flat-bottomed vessel propelled by a large fan — a model originally built by Alexander Graham Bell, and commonly seen in shallow southern waters. It was thrilling. At one point, Marc pointed out that we were mere feet from the parkway, at approximately mile marker 1.8, though you’d never know it… we were paused in an eerily secluded, tree-lined spot where a dozen osprey at a time dive-bomb for dinner. How many times have we driven past, we wondered, without ever knowing this place exists? Marc also took us past a sunken ship which looks between four and 350 years old, according to past airboat riders who’ve taken a stab at guessing its age. The correct answer? Eight. “It’s not the Mayflower!” Mark told us. But the real draw was, of course, ignoring all the typical safe-boating boundaries, like grassy areas where not even a kayaker dare go. It affords a perspective of the bay you really can’t find anywhere else and, no worries, it’s eco-friendly. Marc will take his passengers — families, teens, grown men, bachelorette parties, whomever — on a customized trip that is heavy on the ecology lesson, or one that pit-stops at harborside bars… up to you. Call 609-602-2492. ¯ “I DON’T think people realize, but it’s a big draw to Cape May,” says Jennifer Negro — owner, along with husband Paul — of Tisha’s Fine Dining restaurant on the Washington Street Mall. Jennifer is referring to the dog-friendly nature of our city... one to which she’s happy to contribute. People may not readily associate the phrases “dog-friendly” with “fine dining,” but Tisha’s has an outside patio that’s perfect for you and your mutt. They’ll provide him water in his own signature Tisha’s dish, and the chef will be happy to acommodate his appetite. We apologize for leaving Tisha’s off the dogfriendly restaurant list which appeared in our August color issue — an ugly oversight, as this place sees “at least three to four tables a night” where at least one customer is four-legged. We recommend going ahead and making it five.

With a base of 88% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Syrah this wine offers aromas of sweet plum, mocha and dialed-back spice. Fresh fruit flavors, refined tannins and balanced acidity manipulate the palate. Finishes clean and smooth with light waves of oak.

Looking From Lower

O

Local Heroes, Happenings and a Few Heckles... By Lower Township Deputy Mayor Norris Clark

NCE again the Ferry Terminal hosted thousands of delighted attendees for two fabulous and free open-air concerts produced by the Lower Township Recreational Department, proving itself again a perfect venue for large outdoor events such as last June’s Escape the Cape Triathlon. Another round of thanks go to Mitch Plenn and the whole Lower Township Recreation team for pulling all pf this off on the heels of the well-received Fireworks display. Local Heroes OK. We’ve previously heralded the local educators who feed our minds, as well as the patriots who feed our spirit, now we spotlight the great local restaurateurs who work long hours to feed our bodies, especially the ones that prove such good “Friends of Lower Township.” The newest eatery to Lower Township is the Saltwater Café, recently opened by owner Rick Weber for breakfast and lunch on the harbor at the South Jersey Marina. We’re hearing great things about the food and how the Café proudly shares a portion of their profits with Wild Oceans, so we’re

checking it out. And we cannot think good food on the Lower Township Bayshore without thinking Harpoon Henry’s. Ed and Teresa Henry always serve up savory fare along with good music and of course — the sunsets. Finally, The Lobster House overseen by Keith Laudeman puts us on the map for consistently great, fresh seafood while serving us at tables where we can see where the food just came from. Each of these places proves that Lower Township is a good place to be.

Happenings Congrats to all invovled with the free program featuring the music of the 1950s which took place Friday August 17 at the Fishing Creek School. The two-hour event delighted with picnic fare — hot dogs, pizza and soda — for no charge, although donations were accepted. The program was sponsored by the friends of Fishing Creek School, which is “dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the historic Fishing Creek School, in keeping with our heritage, for various educational, recreational, and cultural programs, all for the benefit of Lower Township and the surrounding community.” A Few Heckles We’ve heard some heckles about the heat and a few more about some pet owners who are not spaying or neutering their pets. To this we say: stay cool, and be responsible pet owners by using the available programs that you can easily find online. Check out capemaycountygov.net. Send heroes, happenings and heckles to me at: norrisclark@me.com

The book everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed. These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books signed by the late author’s grandson, George Carlisle, are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

SAW a grown man on a scooter, today. Not a toy scooter, mind you: a large silver scooter with two wheels. He was gaily pushing along with one foot, on the sidewalk. Pedestrians were scattered like chafe on the wind and small children pointed and shrieked in fear/ excitement. I, of course, fell to one knee and propped the broad end of my walking cane against an uneven paving stone, angling the length of it up at 45 degrees, the sharp silver knob on the bottom catching the sunlight just so. It was like Agincourt all over again: I was the plucky English longbowman behind his sharpened stake and he was the hapless French cavalry. It ended the same way, too – the scoundrel took the cane in his private parts, howled and flew over me, to land in a heap ten feet away, at which point Young Albert nipped in and savaged him something awful. I am still shaken, though, that a grown man thought it acceptable to ride on a scooter as if in kindergarten. He was an out-of-towner, but that is no excuse. I have

added “riding a foolish scooter foolishly whilst being over the age of 21” to the local law books and instructed our fine constabulary to arrest anyone breaking the law. It goes alongside “wearing those ¾ length pants” and “having on socks with sandals”, and each carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment (assuming one murders someone as well). I feel strongly that the international image of this city needs constant and careful monitoring: we are not prudish, just aesthetically aware. And so it is NOT all right

for a 300 lb Shoebie male with a high BMI index to bare his mid-drift in public, but is perfectly fine for a 180 lb Adonis with a six-pack to stroll along the thoroughfares in only a tiny Speedo pouch, so long as he minds his manners and does not show visible excitement below the neck. Also, tattoos: I am a huge fan of body inking. Why, every inch of my own skin was at one stage covered in a scene from the Battle of Trafalgar, with a dying Admiral Nelson in the center of my chest: when I breathed, he appeared to kiss Hardy. Later I had the entire thing tattooed over in a Mediterranean skin tone, giving me my healthy glow. But people having their baby’s rotund dribbling visage tattooed on? Or those ones on the top of ladies’ bottoms? And Caucasians with Chinese characters on their arms? Foolishness of the highest order. To that end we are employing a tattoo warden, with the power to escort an offending specimen to his/her mobile tat van, where a suitable new ink design will be applied to cover the illegal art.

Book Gift Certificate Giveaway

Every week, we ambush an unsuspecting citizen (or citizens) with a gift certificate to Cape Atlantic Book Company What is your name? Glen Smiton. Where are you from? Westchester County, New York. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? I was in the middle of my walk, and I was just stopping to take a break to stretch. How often do you come to Cape May? This is only our second trip! What kind of books do you read? Music-related; anything about music. Right now I’m reading Burt Bacharach’s biography. Are you a musician? Yes, I am. I played guitar and drums in a band for 18 years... but now the only time I play is for my grandkids. PHOTOGRAPH AND INTERVIEW BY GABI URDA

Here’s To Your Health

A weekly column about getting fit and feeling your best ... by Mark Chamberlain of North Beach Health Club

L

AST weekend, I attended a twoday course on running mechanics and performance. There were over 40 participants there with varying reasons for spending beautiful summer days listening to lectures and doing running drills for eight hours. The two instructor’s bona fides included iron man competitions, marathons and teaching others how to do the same. The community of endurance runners, (endurance being anything taking over two hours to complete) advocates a periodization training schedule. You add 10 percent to your previous weeks run and continue to build towards a maximum run which is, in the case of a marathon, 20 miles at about a week out from the race. It’s a volume approach with the idea being, more miles equals better performance. Not many of us, though, are trained first in skill and technique. Unlike with swimmers, who do lots of skill work to perfect their stroke, it’s assumed that if you can put one foot in front of the other, you can run successfully. The truth is you’ll find far more injured runners than healthy ones. They resort to wraps

and pain killers and new shoes to “fix” the problem... but these are band aids not solutions. The technique taught this weekend was all about foot placement and body position. We learned that landing on our heel is responsible for a lot of stress on our joints as it hits the ground with such force, shock waves are sent up the body. The foot is a suspension unit. The arch bends under proper force and springs back allowing us to propel ourselves forward. Hitting the heel acts as a brake and the commensurate push off with the other foot acts to slow you down. Mid-foot striking with the foot under the body as opposed to out in front needs to be mastered for injury free running.

COME CHECK OUT ALL OF OUR NEW DESIGNS!

the flying fish studio 130 park blvd west cape may

Un-learning a habit isn’t easy and in this case it takes lots of drills and lots of time. Your running friends will think you are crazy and you will look odd, at first. As it becomes more second nature, then intensity can be added and, only then, more volume. The number of miles and time spent on the road is reduced as well. I’ve written about the Tabata workouts before and the studies comparing high intensity, short duration workouts to much longer but lower intensity ones. The results are dramatic. The secret to running long distance is contained within doing short, hard training — not simply by running more. We watched videos of ourselves pounding the pavement and it wasn’t pretty. By the last one, I had improved my upper body positioning but continued to hit my heels first. How was I able to run half marathons last year with bad form, I asked? (I thought my style was really good because I “read” about how to do it.) “You built your hardware, your legs, with weight training and anaerobic work,” I was told. “Anyone doing that should be able to run that far.” Now it’s time to work on your software; your technique.”

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady, I’ve been working all summer at a local retail shop, and I’m really enjoying it — great co-workers, nice environment, and a really cool boss. The problem is that he sometimes puts little signs up around the shop, like if things go on sale, or we’re having some kind of special. He’s a really busy guy, but not the best speller ever, and I wonder if his spelling errors are something I should point out or not. And if I do, is it something I should say directly to him, or should I just follow him around, re-writing all of his little signs? I’m a college student, and spelling has always been kind of a thing with me, but I don’t want to be “that guy” if it’s going to come across as obnoxious. — Spell-checker Dear Checker, The Answer Lady would like to con-

gratulate you, young man, for actually caring about spelling. In these auto-correct times in which we live, it is refreshing to see a young person who actually notices things like in which order the letters should go in a given word. As to what you should do about this quandary, the Answer Lady suggests that you take a proactive approach, given that your boss is ‘really cool,’ as you say. The next time you arrive at work and are greeted with a sign trumpeting “Kape Mae Dieminds 50% Off!” you should correct the

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

T IS the age-old question: is the improvement in performance worth the added cost? This could pertain to so many things — mostly high-end purchases like cars, computers, golf clubs (not me — the wife is a golfer). Not so much if we are talking about toasters, blenders, or energy drinks. But, when it comes to optics, particularly binoculars, the answer is emphatically: YES. You will immediately see the difference and, in this case, seeing IS believing! At the recent Purple Martin Festival, it very literally was the difference between seeing massed concentrations of roosting Purple Martins and not seeing them, or barely seeing dark specks somewhere in the sky. At two miles under rapidly diminishing light, the 30,000 birds were invisible to the unaided eye and not much more evident using binoculars in the $200 range. But when someone was handed an instrument in the $1,500 price range, the most often-heard expression was “WOW” followed by “How do I get these?”.

Easy answer. Just go to the Cape May Bird Observatory and say you want to see the best binoculars they have to offer. They will take out two or five of the finest binoculars on earth and invite you to pick the best that are most comfortable. Comfortable? Do you mean they could be too small — or too big? Well, yes but not exactly. They do come in sizes but it has more to do with how your eyes (and hands) are comfortable.

First of all, the binoculars are going to be Zeiss, Swarovski, or Leica. What makes one of these superior instruments the best depends very much on you. Everyone has a different fit. It’s best to get the right fit... you wouldn’t buy a pair of Berluti’s two size too small, would you? Stop over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609884-2736), the store is open 7-days from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Can’t make it in? Find a wealth of info at BirdCapeMay.org. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

Activity Of The Week

N

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: West Cape May Farmers’ Market

EW Jersey was christened the Garden State in 1876, when Abraham Browning of Camden spoke at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. He used Benjamin Franklin’s metaphor of the state as a barrel tapped at both ends, and added that the barrel was filled with good things to eat. In 1954, Governor Robert B. Meyner objected to adding “Garden State” to our license plates, both because any nickname would be distracting, and because only 2.4 percent of the state’s workers were involved in agriculture. The legislature overruled him, and the name stuck, although it is often pronounced with a question mark. At the WCM Farmers Market, that question mark is removed. The WCM Farmers’ Market is the “best reason not to cook on Tuesdays.” You can bring a crowd and let everyone find a favorite meal — the smells of crepes, empanadas, crab cakes, wings, and soups will lead you. Fresh teas and lemonades wash away the summer heat, and sweet treats serve

Sample some of the best fresh produce New Jersey has to offer at the WCM Farmers’ Market. as dessert. The late afternoon sun makes everything, and everyone, look better. There are t-shirts alongside works of art, and back-to-school accessories next to flea market finds. The music gets going around five and combines with the late summer sun to create the perfect ambience. If you’re determined to cook, you’ll find plenty of raw material. Jersey tomatoes and corn are justifiably famous for their taste and are best eaten plain, but there are

sauces for sale to add flavor to your other menu items. Guests who swear that they don’t like zucchini find themselves eating it with gusto after it’s grilled and dusted with parmesan cheese. Grilled peaches on top of vanilla ice cream make a heavenly summer dessert, but buy extra because the peaches have a way of disappearing before they make it to the grill. Buy extra blueberries, too, because they can easily be frozen or turned into a simple jam so that you can enjoy the taste of summer well in to fall. Bring home some local honey to sweeten things up all winter long. Bring your tunnel vision and leave the kids home if you hope to just get the produce — there are pleasant distractions all around and you’ll be tempted to linger. The WCM Farmers Market is held at the “Backyard Park” located behind West Cape May Borough Hall, 732 Broadway. It runs each Tuesday between 3 and 7:30pm, “rain or shine or rainbows.” Find a way to pack your goodies into your bike basket, or walk, because parking is at a premium. Next week: Boardwalk Nights

COCO is a fun-loving, spunky shepherd who loves to run and play! She needs a little training, because she has a lot of energy, but she loves to snuggle and cuddle too. She’d love to be in an active house where people are ready to play. She’s been bounced from home to home, so she needs a permanent spot where she can finally be comfortable. Stop by the shelter and visit Coco! Her adoption fee is $95.

«

KIA is an older pit bull terrier who would really prefer to live her golden years in a nice home; the shelter life just isn’t for her! She would make a great companion for an active owner — Kia may not be young anymore, but she still loves to play! She gets along great with other dogs, kids, and even cats. If you’re looking for someone special to light up your life, stop by the shelter and visit her. Kia’s adoption fee is only $35!

ZEKE is a three-year-old lab and shepherd mix (which is just about the best mix on the planet, we think) currently residing at the shelter. He’s a fun-loving boy who loves to play, bea a good boy, and be happy... just what you’d want in a new companion. If you think Zeke fits into your life (we’d be shocked if he couldn’t) please come meet him today... it’s not fair for him to be behind bars one minute longer. The adoption fee is $95.

PUMPKIN is a very sweet little girl just over a year old, but she’s still quite small. She is very social, but she will probably want all your attention for herself... meaning she won’t want to share you with any other cats. If you are looking for a small, sweet girl, look no further; come to the shelter for a visit. Pumpkin’s adoption fee is $35.

«

LEXI is an adorable girl who is looking for someone to show her love again. She has been at the shelter since December, and she’s really starting to miss having a human companion. She likes to be pet, and doesn’t mind being held. If you are looking for a loving friend to share your home with, give Lexi a chance. The adoption fee is $35.
