Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
he Cape May City Council election race just took another interesting turn this week with the news that a feisty foe of Mayor Ed Mahaney threw his hat in the ring. Charlie Hendricks became the fourth (as far as I know thus far) candidate to stand for election in November. And that should add a bit of spice to the mix, since Charlie, along with his fellow cronies from the east end of town, has never shied away from controversy. It was Charlie who posed that awkward f lood insurance question to City Manager Bruce MacLeod in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy... that is, the question of whether Convention Hall actually HAD flood insurance while the storm battered the Jersey coast. The answer, of course, is that it hadn’t. And Charlie feels that there are still questions that have to be answered regarding the flood insurance, as well as the operation of Convention Hall. In Charlie’s statement to the press this week, he says that Convention Hall “finances remain hidden” and adds that there is a “lack of transparency in government which stifles accountability.” I couldn’t agree more — my
BIRD IS THE WORD
having their views spoiled by the erection of new homes. In any event, Charlie’s introduction to the race will keep things interesting. The other candidates who have so far declared are former fire chief Jerry Inderwies, Jr, community activist Shaine Meier, and former teacher Bea Pessagno. Good news for those who either enjoyed the experience at Cape May’s newest restaurant, the tapas-style Shamone, or wanted to. As I reported last week, the new Washington Street joint from the brothers Karapanagiotis was shuttered soon after opening over zoning conditions, but Yiannis, who opened Shamone with brother Peter, are bringing the concept to their existing restaurant Pano, in the City Center Mall. “Pano will be shut down at 8 and we’ll transform the dining room into Shamone at 9pm,” Yiannis told me. The new, relocated Shamone will be open weekends in September and October. For information and reservations, call 609-600-1846. Finally, hope to see you at the NJ and Delaware Craft Beer Festival on September 6. It should be a lot of fun.
³
sense is that the operation of Convention Hall is a mess. It’s never had a proper marketing or operations director — instead, it’s apparently been run by a combination of the mayor and city manager, neither of whom are experts in the convention business. I can’t say I will be agreeing with Charlie on all issues, since the east end gang tend to be reactive rather than proactive with most city issues — think Not In My Back Yard. For instance, I’ve never believed that their opposition to the Sewell Tract development is based on their environmental concerns as much as it is based on their concerns about

USA Today’s “#1 Fried Chicken” “LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

Our roving photographer bumped into Connie Davis, from Fogelsville, PA while she was walking around town. Just because we’re good like that, we gave her a $25 gift certificate to spend at The Original Fudge Kitchen. How long are you in Cape May for? We are actually staying up in Ocean City, but we are here for the evening with my son, my daughter-in-law and their baby. How old is the baby? Three months. What are you both doing for a living? I’m a retired second grade school teacher. How did you manage to control the little ones? I always had a passion, and it just came naturally to me. Is there something that you applied to your son, after your teaching experience?Just really listen, not always do the talking. What do you like about Cape May? It is so family oriented, a lot of history, and I love the houses. We stay here around the holidays. Do you like Cape May better than Ocean City? They are both family oriented, but Cape May has better architecture. Do you get to go on vacation often? We try as much as we can. We try to escape for a couple days at least once a month. What’s your favorite fudge? Chocolate, peanut butter, vanilla. The winner of our next giveaway will receive a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
do not often sleep. I say this with some pride: I did not sleep at all in 1944, 1969, or 2000, for reasons linked to Hitler, Vietnam, and the presumed end of the world. That is not to say I do not sleep at all — I am a master napper, and have trained myself to get as much rest as you do in a night, dear friends, in three seconds of the most intense napping imaginable. Also, not spending eight hours a day unconscious and drooling has made it much harder for my enemies to assassinate me, or cause harm to my beloved Cape May: had I not been awake in the wee small hours, I would never have spotted the Nazi submarine intent on delivering an invasion force on the beach, or that alien spacecraft intent in anally probing every last one of you and disposed of them both (the first with the anti-aircraft gun on the roof of the Decatur Mansion, the second with a torpedo). As an added precaution I have had two very alert-looking eyeballs tattoed on my
eyelids so that no one can be confident enough of catching me unawares. This has not been an unalloyed success, I admit, as it gives the impression that I never blink, and for some reason this tends to unsettle people after a few minutes. While you lot are slumbering in your beds, I am prowling the streets keeping you safe from harm, with Night-time Albert at my side (he is indistinguishable from Day-time Albert, except that he wears tiny night-vision goggles: Yorkshire Terriers are not especially good at seeing in the dark.)
What harm is there in Cape May, you ask? This is surely the safest city in America! Well yes, and that is entirely thanks to me: did you imagine the werewolves, vampires, ghouls and Wildwooders just rounded themselves up and marched themselves out of the city limits? I prowl through our darkest alleys with my elephant gun (oh yes, we have a rogue elephant problem, too), my steaks, stakes and a specially modified bathroom plunger (don’t ask, as the answer will have you clenching) and Young Albert, taking on all comers. And what gain is there for me, for all this danger? Nothing at all, dear hearts, save for the thrill of keeping you all safe, the delight in seeing my beloved Cape May intact come the dawn, and the growing collection of infra-red video footage I collect as you all sleep. Haha, just my little joke there, Mr Scotch Editor: be sure to delete that last part, of course, before you publish, there’s a good chap!

T
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, enjoying a thrilling ride at East Coast Jet Boat
he lazy days of summer are behind us. It’s time to get back to school; it’s time to stay at work until five on a Friday; it’s time to wear socks. Jolt your body back into high gear with a little adrenalin. Take a ride on a jet boat around Cape May. Your body is built to respond to changes in speed and motion. Parents seem to know this instinctively — that’s why we rock babies, swing toddlers up in the air, and send bigger kids to play on the swings. Those childhood rides may develop the inner ear — that built-in gyroscope that helps you to know where you are in space. Intense changes — at high speed or high altitude — can bring about a zen-like state that is otherwise achieved only through meditation. Being scared makes you feel more alive, and this sense of well-being may be addictive, which is why we call some people adrenalin junkies. Those of us who aren’t race car drivers or skydivers can get that feeling from mock danger, like roller coast-
ers, or a ride on the jet boat. The folks at East Coast Jet Boat at Utsch’s Marina call their speedy boat ride “part scenic, part amusement.” You hop on a New Zealand jet boat, powered by twin supercharged diesel 700hp engines and take a 50-minute journey with spins and dunks and maybe, a close-up view of dolphins. My crowd loved it — it’s a great way to see Cape May from the bay, and the speed and spins had us laughing. Last year we had a crying tween, but she felt brave for sticking it out. Not that she had a choice — once
you’re on, you are on for the duration. The ride is fun for children from about five or six through people in middle age. Babies and senior citizens should probably give this adventure a pass. This year, East Coast are operating through Sunday, September 14. Make a reservation and check in 20 minutes before your trip. Wear quick-drying shorts and a tee shirt, and bring a jacket unless it’s really hot out. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses and a hat that you can afford to lose. It is customary to tip the jet boat captain, so shove some cash deep into a pocket. Leave the rest of your valuables — including your phone — locked in your car. The tickets are $40 for ages 14 and up, and $30 for ages 5-13. Anyone under 18 must have a guardian fill out liability waivers, and children under 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult on the boat. Looking for a lower dose of adrenalin? Rent a jet ski — $80 for a 45-minute rental. Drivers must be 18, and passengers must be at least 44” tall.

Tom Sims reviews the eponymous debut record from Cape May’s Audrey and Chris
C
Audrey Snow and Chris Gillin-Schwartz have built up a strong local following. Photograph by Frank Weiss
hris and Audrey’s new release contains seven tracks that are as thoughtful as they are thought-provoking. Each song blends unencumbered acoustic rhythms, haunting poetic lyrics and haunting melodies from Chris and Audrey’s voices that are eloquent and gritty at the same time. “Late Night” is the track where Audrey uses the power of her soulful voice: “Give me some of that late-night lovin’; I love the way you love me late nite.” The song goes quiet — “I woke up under the moon; I picked up my clothes from around your room; you sleepin’ tight, wake you I might; but maybe it’s best if I leave in the late night.” Her emotion pours out with a strength of an Adele. “Down the Line” starts off like a classic Bob Dylan song (complete with harmonica) and does not break character once. Chris comes through with his earthy, unapologetic folk vocals. Audrey’s voice raises like a kindred smoke gently winding around his. My favorite song (and you know I always
have a favorite) is “Hold Out”. The song softly starts by reminding you of that breakup — not the one that wasn’t so much ugly but made you sad, where your defenses were down and you knew it was over before that last embrace. The lyrics are among the most insightful and emotional I’ve ever heard in a break up song. Close your eyes, it’s time to go, And I’m not taking no for an answer. So close your eyes and kiss me goodbye, you have to go. Take this time to feel my lips like I know you never did, And take this time to say goodbye in any way you see fit. The chorus builds up like a freight train approaching the station... a train that’s about to leave the station, we find out. The lyrics pack an emotional blow that anyone who’s ever had ever had to say goodbye will understand. She was hoping that this one would “take her to the end,” that relationship
you hope will last through time. Unfortunately, “Life’s surprises leave you empty, maybe I was empty from the start.” The wisdom and brilliance of the lyrics are summed up in the coupled line, “How you supposed to know when it’s bleeding, beating or breaking when you can’t feel your heart.” The final verses are the most powerful where Audrey wants him to “hold out your hand” so she can lead him to the end... not the end she was obviously hoping for. This CD stirs several emotions and provides a versatile soundtrack for anything from a dinner party to personal meditation. You can stream the album on reverbnation.com/audreyandchris. Email Chris Gillin Schwartz at cgillinschwartz@gmail.com for download options. Or better still, buy a copy at an upcoming gig — Audrey recently left for France for a study abroad program but you can still see Chris at the Schooner at the Lobster House this Friday 6-10pm. Visit Audrey and Chris on Facebook.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My brother’s wife is proving to be a thorn in my side. My mother recently fell ill and needs in-home care until she recovers, which should be six weeks or so. My brother lives nearby but I am two hours away and the burden for her care is falling on me, simply because his wife refuses to cooperate. Meanwhile, school is starting and I need to be back home, except on weekends. Should I confront my sister-in-law? – Abandoned Dear Abandoned No, you should confront your brother and demand that he man up. Or hire a nurse to come in and present him with the bill. He’ll probably prefer that — he can have the knowledge that mom is being taken care of and not have to face the music with his wife.
Wise answers to perplexing questions
As for your sister-in-law, you can torture her later. I would suggest a trip to Love the Cook and pick up a few of their hot sauces to sneak on her food when she isn’t looking. Meanwhile, you can also purchase some fine coffee and teas there to help mom with her recovery. Just the smell of their coffees makes the Answer lady feel better. Dear Answer Lady I’ve known a woman in town for years, not intimately, but we are long-time
acquaintances. Sometimes she greets me with warmth and affection and other times, she barely speaks to me. What am I to make of it? To the best of my knowledge, I’ve never done a thing to her and I don’t think I’m the only one she does this to. – Perplexed Dear Perplexed I wouldn’t give it another thought. Clearly, there is something wrong with her. It could take the form of any number of things — among them, perhaps she simply didn’t take her meds. Perhaps she didn’t see you or perhaps she does indeed, run hot and cold. My suggestion is to take her as she comes. She’s never going to be on your A-list, so why waste your time worrying about whether she loves or she loves you not? If, however, you are one of those people who must be loved or must know the reason why you are not, The Answer Lady suggests you invite her to tea at the Butterfly Tea Room or the Carriage House at the Physick Estate. I wouldn’t press her on the issue, but rather use the time to ingratiate yourself to her and see what happens.

FELIX just loves to snuggle and play. He may be shy at first but once you get to know him he is the sweetest boy ever. He and his brother Fritz were brought to the shelter together. Bird Droppings
E
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
very evening the air over my little bayshore town was ringing with the cries of osprey. What’s so unusual about this? Nothing. That’s my point. After decades of low population numbers, and fears the species might disapear from North America, osprey have made a stupendous comeback and are once again a common thread in the tapestry that is summer in Cape May. Other raptors, most notably bald eagle eat fish, but among birds of prey, only the osprey has evolved to plunge for fish beneath the surface. Eagles pluck from the surface or pilfer fish from osprey. What makes the osprey so special? First, it is large and strong enough to lift itself and 5-6 lbs of wiggling prey clear of the water. And the talons have been modified to keep a grip. Also, the pads of osprey feet are fitted with tiny slip-free spicules. While osprey do not plunge deeper than one meter, they still immerse themselves, leading to two further refinements that permit it to transition freely from one element into another. The
feathers are dense and tightly packed. They are also quite oily. When osprey lift themselves aloft after a plunge, they shake, sending water droplets flying. When flying with prey, osprey maneuver their catch so that it is aerodynamically head first. Occasionally migrating osprey are seen packing a lunch — migrating with fish in their grasp. Cape May is one of the best places on earth to see migrating osprey and September through October is primetime —
more than 1,000 have been recorded in a single day, though several hundred is the norm. Unlike most hawks osprey are also very vocal. In Cape May, their high piping whistle is almost as much a part of the summer symphony sound as the cry of laughing gull. A good place to watch Osprey plunge for fish is the beach from Cape May to Cape May Point. It’s a poor morning when a dozen or more birds are not circling just beyond the breakers. A good experiment for budding young naturalists is to see how many dives it takes for osprey to catch a fish. Compare the ratio of young and adults to see if there is a difference. Does experience count? Fish that are common and swim near the surface are mostly targeted by osprey, though the birds are expert opportunists — many years ago at a hawk watch in North Jersey, observers reported seeing an osprey with an orange in its talons. Even if this was not a temperate region, this would constitute a highly irregular sighting. Later reflection led to the conclusion that it was very likely a coi snatched from an ornamental pond.
