Notes From The Candidates’ Debate

A

Susan Tischler reports from Cape May Elementary School and has a big question... about the questions

s political debates go, it was a bit of a love fest Thursday night at the Cape May Elementary School when five candidates vying for three positions on Cape May City Council gathered to debate the issues. The event, sponsored by the Taxpayers Association of Cape May, is supposed to be a key format for discovering who the candidates are and what they stand for. But, truthfully, if you didn’t already know the candidates’ platforms going into Thursday’s meet-and-greet, you left being no better informed. Based on the 10 convoluted questions posed to the candidates, it would be a gross understatement to say that the Cape May Taxpayers Association is unhappy with Mayor Ed Mahaney. And that is all well and good, except that this was the candidates’ — Charlie Hendricks, Jerry Inderwies, Jr, Shaine Meier, Bea Pessagno and John Van de Vaarst — night to shine. Instead they were deluged with questions which were so long and involved that they had to be repeated, sometimes three times. To make matters worse, the sound system was defective. One candidate said the reason they

BIRD IS THE WORD

agreed so much was because they couldn’t properly hear the question and depended on each other’s initial answer just to figure out what they thought the question was. Well, this we know — no matter who is elected, they have shown they can work as a team! Here’s the first question, as an example... The present city council has apparently committed a good portion of the future growth of Cape May to the creation of so called “Public Private Partnerships”. Such formal arrangements provide city resources to support activities by and for private enterprises. These “private partners” are listed in the Creative Place Making Plan. While the city, like

any public entity, is required to fully disclose all if its financial activities, revenue and spending in an annual public audit, no such requirement exists for our “Partners”. Since public funds are being used to support these private activities, do you support the requirement that these “private partners” be required to meet the same standards required of public partners? If so, how do you plan to do it; and if not, why not? Dear reader, are you still awake? A better question would be: How many times can we say ‘required’ in one sentence. Or, as one attendee commented, “Of course, they’re going to agree. Why not just ask them if they want to throw the baby out with the bath water?” The reporter sitting next to me laughed when he saw the questions and asked, “Why don’t they just ask them how they feel about public-private partnerships? Or, why not just hand them questions so they can read them?” Good points. The premise of the questions almost implied that the candidates had no idea what the issues of Cape May are and that they

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13 needed what amounted to a tutorial on the subject before getting to the question. I’ve never run for office and candidates’ night used to be the main format for seeing a candidate’s mettle under pressure. Well, anyone who could discern that much information without really being able to hear what was being said and came up with any kind of intelligent answer is okay in my book. That said, how did they do? Everyone did pretty well. No one really fell through the trap door. Shaine Meier was probably the least effective performer, but that may speak to his relative youth. He did, however, shine with question #2 which pertained to hiring outside consultants — Temple University, among them. Without adding the biased commentary, the question was: What is your plan to salvage some measure of public benefit from these public investments? Shaine referenced the Temple study and suggested that in the future we skip the pros and simply ask the people what they want. “I would not ask for outside help,” he said. “I would ask for your help.” Charlie Henricks focused on his selfproclaimed whistle-blowing role in Cape May – reminding voters once again that it

was he who exposed the Convention Hall flood insurance issue to the public. He stressed throughout the evening the need for more accurate accounting, particularly with regard to Convention Hall, stating that the $10.5 million facility currently has no profit and loss statements, concluding, “Which means there is no profit.” Many commented afterwards on John Van de Vaarst’s performance. He is arguably the least known of the five candidates, but he comported himself quite well. Van de Vaarst, who worked for the federal government until his retirement, called for a “more open, more inclusive and more responsive” city council. While all the candidates called for improving the information flow on the city’s website, Van de Vaarst agreed that the website could be improved, but questioned “how much resources are we willing to discharge to improve it? Do we have the personnel to execute it?” Jerry Inderweis, Jr was quite naturally strong when the question regarding whole house rentals came up. He underscored the danger of insisting on maximum fire and safety precautions for a B&B with eight rooms yet allowing a whole house rental of perhaps 25 or more occupants to operate without scrutiny. But there again, the ques-

tion was unnecessarily loaded, as in: There are approximately 11,000 whole house rental rooms in the city. Large homes purchased by investors have been converted to rentals, allowing large numbers of occupants to impact city services and parking. Why not let the candidates assess the situation instead of telling them what is unfair about the dilemma? Bea Pessagno stood out from the crowd when Curtis Bashaw rightly challenged the Taxpayers Association for denying the candidates both an opening statement and a closing one and asked what each saw for Cape May’s future. Pessagno said she felt so passionate about Cape May’s future that she could not sit and answer but had to stand. “I believe that Cape May’s Victorian architecture are works of art and should be preserved like any great work of art.” She went on to advocate for Cape May’s future, for a year-round community and to look for ways to bring younger families into the city. It was pretty much the only sign of passion throughout the whole evening. The sad thing is that the talk afterwards was focused on the quality of the questions, not on the candidates. If nothing else, Thursday’s Meet the Candidates underscores the need for objectivity and perhaps a different organization charged with that task.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

for one am pleased about the proposed legislation banning cars from Cape May. I know, I know, it has its limits: drivers will be able to park right outside city limits, in one of five purpose-built lots being constructed in the spring. And of course the tram system will — though approved — likely not happen unless we win the state lottery. And by “we” I mean every single one of us, in turn, and all give the money to the city. But the positive part — the outlawing of internal combustion engines — will be delightful. Instead of the ever-present roar of engines, the percussive thump of gridlocked Shoebies’ chubby fists on steering wheels and the diccordant tooting of horns, we will have birdsong, the noise of the wind in the trees and the gentle wheeze of citizens’ lungs as they become used to what people now call “exercise” but what we in the Old Days used to call “life”. There was talk of re-introducing an electric dodgem system along the seafront, but that last time, in 1933, when a stray spark from the overhead

cables coincided with the passing hydrogen tanker (en route to fuel the Hindenburg, tied up at the mast atop the Grand Admiral hotel) and a train in the nearby siding that housed a travelling Giant Sea Mammals exhibition, is still in some people’s minds, and made us leert of novelty. The noise! The explosions! Oh, the huge manatee! So bicycles it is, dear friends. Every citizen will be issued with one, choosing from the standard two-wheeled-single-saddle model, a charming tandem, a sturdy tricycle (full sized: not one of those tiny models

favored by monkeys in the circus) and a daring unicycle. What of the tourists? How will they and their huge suitcases make it to our hotels and hostelries? Fear not! Cape May’s blacksmiths and upholsterers are hard at work crafting comfy trailer units that will easily hold a family of four. And the even better news is that every jobless person/would-be student between the ages of 16 and 19 will be conscripted to tow our visitors around town for one season, earning a generous stipend and college credits along the way. I will be riding my hand-crafted Beech Cruiser, made from a single tree of that same name, polished to perfection and running on tires made of India Rubber. Big Woody, as I know him, can attain speeds of 50mph and not even make a whisper of noise, unless Young Albert is in his little basket on front, in which case the silence is interruped by snaps, crunches and high shrieks as he takes nips at passing birds/out-of-towners/traffic wardens: his teeth are little, but mighty powerful. ’Tis an amusing spectacle.

The Activity Column

A

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, treat yourself to a show this autumn

rchaeologists have found evidence of theater-like activity among the earliest human civilizations. The Egyptians had theater in 2600 BCE, about two thousand years before the Greeks “invented” it. Like us, early humans used theater to bring people together, to understand important issues in their lives, or just to express themselves. Something special happens when you fill a room with strangers and put on a show. Live theater immerses you in the story and the audience becomes a part of the production. The live theater experience doesn’t end when the curtain falls. Another theater-goer points out something about the costumes, or the set design, or provides a comparison to another production, and soon you’re having a real conversation about something besides the news cycle. It’s a welcome respite from reality. Even when something goes awry, or the story isn’t to your taste, you gain something. A dropped prop, a raspy voice, a wardrobe malfunction, an understudy thrust in to the spotlight, a failed joke — these are fodder

for dinner table discussions and the inspiration to recover from our own missteps. If you’re in Cape May, you can choose from a variety of theater options. MAC offers Murder Mystery Luncheons and Dinners through the last weekend in October. Where This Is No Will invites you to sharpen your pencil and your wits as you ponder the motives of each character. Call 609-884-5404 or 800-2754278 for tickets and information — adults $50 for dinners, $35 for luncheons. Children’s menu $15 per meal. Elaine’s Dinner Theater has Murder Mystery Weekends November 14-16 and 21-23. Scrooge, the Musical opens

November 28 with a light-hearted rendering of the classic Christmas tale. Call 609-8841199 for reservations and more information. The East Lynne Theater Company offers its Holmes & Carter Mysteries on Friday, November 7 and November 8, before switching into holiday mode with Christmas in Wisconsin: Tales by Zona Gale on November 28. Fans of Lake Wobegon should make this a centerpiece for a holiday trip to Cape May. Call 609884-5898 or check out their website, eastlynnetheater.org for tickets and information. Feeling fearless? At Cape May Stage, you can choose a night of dangerous theater, like Neil LaBute’s Reasons To Be Pretty on November 10. Or visit the Masters of Modern Drama with a staged reading of The Caretaker by Harold Pinter on October 27. Other Desert Cities by Jon Robin Baitz, a look at the dangers of family secrets, plays through October 31. The October 24 performance features a post-show discussion with the cast and crew. Mistakes Were Made by Craig Wright, the Emmy-nominated writer of Six Feet Under, plays November 5 through November 22.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter’s sweet sixteen party was last week and my mother-in-law asked what she would like. My daughter picked out a cameo brooch from MaryAnne’s. She has always wanted one and asked my motherin-law to buy it, because she knew it was something she could afford, and because she thought it would be appropriate coming from her grandmother. Instead, my motherin-law gave her pearl earrings because she “liked them better.” My daughter could not hide her disappointment and wondered why she didn’t get what she asked for. My motherin-law said she “should be lucky to get anything” and accused her of being an “ungrateful granddaughter.” My daughter fled to her room crying and that was the end of the

party. What to do? — Betwixt and Between Dear Betwixt and Between Granny sounds narcissistic, but your daughter should never have embarrassed her like that. Her behavior can be chalked up to the impatience of youth, BUT she will have to apologize to her grandmother. And the Answer Lady suggests you go get that cameo. Imagine how your star will shine when your daughter opens her presents Christmas morning. As to the pearl earrings — make sure she wears them to the next family occa-

sion when granny will be present. Dear Answer Lady I am turning 30 next week and I am ready to settle down and start a family, but how do I go about finding Mr Right? The bar scene is definitely not working. — Looking for Love Dear Looking for Love There are books written about this, so to answer in one paragraph is a bit daunting. The Answer Lady has learned of many successes with the matchmaker websites, but if you think about them — what are they honing in on? Common ground. “He’s so hot!” is not a good basis for finding Mr Right. He may very well be “hot,” but is he trustworthy and giving? This is why so many successful relationships are discovered in the workplace, places of worship, clubs. Discovering what is most important in YOUR life is the first step to finding someone to share it. Start by joining something. Volunteering at the theaters — Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theater. Or hit Open Mic at the Pilot House Fridays. Birding? Pop over to Cape May Bird Observatory. Choose your outings with a look to the future.

A LETTER TO CAPE MAY STAGE... I am writing on behalf of four of us who have been coming to Cape May Point for years every fall to watch the hawk migration that occurs here. We are from Michigan and Ohio respectively. Also every year, we attend at least one of your theatre’s productions. We are theatre buffs, and attend live theatre in the Detroit and Cincinnati areas as often as we can. This year, my wife and I planned our arrival so we could see the last staging of Blithe Spirit, and the four of us saw Other Desert Cities this past Saturday. Blithe Spirit was a rollicking good time. It is hard to pull off good comedy sometimes, and your cast and crew DID! What fun! Clever set design, too. However, it is Cities that has prompted this email. Will you please convey to your cast and crew at least this one-word review from us. “WOW! “ We were blown away. We have friends from Michigan who will arrive this Thursday. I contacted them and basically told them that they MUST see this play, and they are. I bought their tickets yesterday. Certainly it is, first and foremost, well-written, but the cast was outstanding, and deserved more than two curtain calls. Our Saturday night audience would have been willing to give them more. Everyone exiting could not stop exclaiming. I heard nothing but accolades from patrons as we exited and gathered in small clusters outside of the theatre. Kudos to everyone involved. What an ensemble of fine actors. Please tell them so. I have been “spreading the word” to all of our acquaintances on the hawk-watching platform at the state park. There is quite a large number of folks who come to Cape May Point State Park every fall to observe hawk migration, so over the years we all have come to know each other, and socialize for a period of approximately four weeks. I hope that we will be able to send some more attendees your way. We look forward to to future fall productions in the ensuing years. Sincerely,

Michael Fitzpatrick Mt. Clemens, Michigan

WILLOW came to the shelter as a stray. This pit bull and boxer mix can be a bit nervous and is easily spooked so no scary movies for this young girl! Willow likes other dogs and cats but can be a little nervous around little kids so she’d prefer older kids. If you’d like to meet a sweet girl like Willow please come to the shelter.

«

SMITTY is a sweet male Chihuahua with a ton of personality. He loves other cats and dogs, though he can be a bit nervous in new situations so a home without children is ideal for Smitty. This little guy likes to play and snuggle when he gets comfortable so if you think you’d like a sweet boy in your family, please come visit Smitty.

«

SCRAPPY is a lovable older Shar Pei looking for a quiet home where he can live out the rest of his days in the peace and comfort that he deserves. Scrappy’s previous owner had him since he was 10 weeks old but recently had to give him up. Poor Scrappy really misses living in a home — please come and visit this charming older gentleman.

The book that everyone in Cape May is talking about

Dennis J. Spilker Manager/Funeral Director N.J. Lic. No. 4038

David M. Danaher Funeral Director N.J. Lic. No. 3285

It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.

These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.
