Ramblings From The Editor
K
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
udos to the Cape May Police Department for a couple good reasons. Number one — it seems that our fair city has been targeted in recent months by jewel thieves and shoplifters in general. And our police department has done a great job of reeling these scumballs in. I apologize — they haven’t been found guilty yet... alleged scumballs. Given that the Exit Zero empire includes a few retail stores, I feel the pain of any business owner who’s the victim of these selfish, sociopathic morons — sorry, allegedly selfish, sociopathic morons. For the first few years I operated an Exit Zero store I didn’t think shoplifting was a concern — not in genteel Cape May, surely. But after a good number of inventory calculations and recalculations, I now realize otherwise. So, a huge shout-out to our men and women in blue (with amber stripes). I'm also deeply impressed by the CMPD’s Reassurance Program. Residents who sign up call a designated telephone number at Cape May Police Department on a daily basis, generally between 5am and 10am and give their name to the police dispatcher. If the
BIRD IS THE WORD
³
resident has not called in by 10am a call is placed to their home. If no contact is made by telephone, an officer is sent to the home to ensure that they are okay. If that officer believes that the resident is home and unable to answer the telephone or come to the door, he or she will enter into the home, either by accessing a predetermined secret spot for the key, or the use of a lock box, mounted to the exterior of the home, containing a spare key. If you have any questions about the program, call the CMPD at (609) 884-9500 or (609) 884-9539. I think this is a fantastic idea and is world-class community service.
This weekend is a big one in the Cape May cultural calendar — from Friday to Sunday, the streets of the town will be rocking to the great music and cool vibes of the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival (and for those who wonder, no, we are not related — we are simply a major and enthusiastic sponsor of the event). Organizer Michael Kline has put together another stellar program of musicians. I encourage you to consider buying a POPs Pass, which for just $38 gets you access to 29 acts (count ’em!)over the three days. It doesn't include the gigs at Convention Hall, but it does get you into the Boiler Room, Cabanas, Carney's and Aleathea’s. You can buy the passes from our online store at www.ezstore.us, or at either of our physical stores, at 109 Sunset Boulevard and 316 Beach (which will be open from 9am to 11pm this Friday and Saturday). Enjoy the festival! If some of you are still wondering about the day the earth moved, October 29... the cause of that earthquake-style rumble was likely supersonic aircraft from the US Navy doing test runs over the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy a fall-tastic weekend in Cool Cape May, whether you’re visiting or live here!

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have decided the D’Catur Mansion’s kitchen garden will henceforth be totally organic. Of course, that means you, too, dear friends, will also be required to do the same, but more of that later. The idea came when I recently took a tour of the rather splendid Beach Plum Farm, in the company of a wagonload of oohing and aahing tourists and, oddly, a slightly grubby, mute, person-sized blue pig. We saw acres of seasonal vegetables, a great many chickens, at least one turkey and dozens of pleasingly clean, large, content ruminants. There were also raptors overhead, which I assume were part of the farm’s organic pest control, and I suppose also double as a disposal method for guests unwary enough to overindulge on the excellent beer being sold on site. I was too busy eyeing the blue porker suspiciously (pigs of any size or color are not to be trusted, and 5-feet-tall bipedal ones even less so. I have read “Animal Farm”, and know a thing or two about species that are jealous of us, and want nothing more than
to take over. Do not even get me started on monkeys, I warn you. Anyway, this oddly hued pig was, I am sure, staring at me menacingly even as it pretended to playfully wave and pat kids’ heads) to listen to all that the cheery guide was saying, but it seemed clear that the farm supplies every scrap of food served up in this city’s best eateries. An example, friends, that we can all learn from: why, back in wartime, Cape May was self sufficient, with every garden, deck and rooftop planted and planted, or stocked with creatures that we reckoned worth eating.
The Canal was blocked with mesh at both ends, and wild salmon bred there, in such great numbers that a man could walk from one bank to the other without getting his feet wet, though if he did happened to slip, he was fish food. This time around, we shall do things a little more ambitiously: I have secured a number of bison for us, and they shall be given total access to any land they choose, until the herd is at maximum size. Any harvested after that must be used down to the very last fragment: as well as rather tasty eating, we shall all be sporting bison coats, hats, shoes and gloves, and buttons and other fastenings are to be crafted from hoof and horn. Exceptions will be made for those citizens who raise chickens instead: feathered capes add a dash of style to an outfit, and chicken bones can be fashioned into all sorts of everyday vitals. Of course, every pig will be eaten on sight, with a bounty of one silver dollar for the head of any blue ones found in city limits.

The Activity Column
T
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, keep it moving
he calorie creep starts with Halloween candy, builds through Thanksgiving pies, ramps up with Christmas cocktails, and ends with the hangover-fighting brunch on New Year’s Day. Control your cravings by keeping things moving in Cape May. Doctors can’t agree whether humans are programmed to hold onto extra weight in winter, but we can all agree that it’s easy to gain in the cold weather. Dark days darken your mood, robbing you of the motivation to keep fit. On a dreary day, even your dog wants to cut the walk short and become your accomplice on the couch. Add in the stress of holiday houseguests, year-end work pressure, or the competition for a date — or babysitter — for New Year’s Eve, and it’s easy to lose track. The season of cuddling, caramel apples, and movie marathons can turn your six pack into a keg by St. Patrick’s Day. Make sure that “Spring Forward, Fall Back” refers to the clocks, not your activity level. Prepare your body for cold-weather exercise by drinking lots of water, dressing in layers, and wearing a hat. Wear shoes
with non-skid soles, and consider gloves and a scarf or face shield. Before you head out the door, warm up inside for four to six minutes. Time your route so that you can walk or jog in the daylight as much as possible. Walk for a good cause at the third annual Sole-Man 5k: Gene Sole Memorial Walk on Saturday, November 8, starting at the Convention Center. This rain-or-shine event starts at 9am and raises funds for the Gene Sole Scholarship Fund. Race day registration for the 5k is $30 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Registration for the walk is $15.
If you can’t face the frigid air, work out indoors. The North Beach Health Club has a full schedule of classes, starting with AM Extreme at the extremely early hour of 5:30, and wrapping up with Hot Bottom at night. Memberships start at one day for visitors. Cape May Fitness Center in North Cape May offers group fitness classes like Zumba and Spin Body Blast. Balance Pilates and Yoga Studio in West Cape May offers classes for all levels, including a beginner-friendly Yoga for Everybody, and Vinyasa Yoga for more experienced yogis. They’re offering “Vinyasa at the Vineyard!” on November 14 from 7-9pm at Cape May Winery. It’s $30 per student; check out balancecapemay.com for more information. Or, if you can’t bear to leave the house, try one of the free workouts offered through the television — this can be your chance to try something new, in complete privacy. Maybe a few minutes marching around the living room is all you’ll need to keep the winter blahs at bay. Next week: Let there be Light

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My youth group is sponsoring a dance and there is a particular boy I would like to go with, but he has not asked me yet. Should I ask him? What if he says no? I’ll be devastated and embarrassed. — Scared Dear Scared The problem is, the more he means to you — the greater the rejection. If you can manage to put things into perspective, the Answer Lady suggests you take the initiative and ask him to the dance with this codicil: try to make it casual, as though you were asking him to sit with you at a football game. If you cannot manage, what the French call “deeztance,” aka distance, try stealth. Ask some friends if they know if he is already going with someone, and let it be known that you would love
Wise answers to perplexing questions
to go to the dance with him. You might also consider going stag. You never know what surprises lie around the corner when you keep your options open. No matter what, boost your self esteem with a new dress. Pop on over to Caroline’s Boutique on Saturday and pick out just the right look. Dear Answer Lady My 12-year-old son has never given me an ounce of trouble, but lately something has gotten into him. He comes home night after night without his homework. The first few
times, I bought his stories that there was no homework, that he forgot his homework or that he finished it in study hall. Then I got a call from his teacher asking what was “wrong at home.” For the first time ever, it looks as though he will go from an A student to a C student. — Anxious Dear Anxious The Answer Lady thinks you have a lot more problems than his going from an “A student to a C student.” Clearly something much larger is troubling him and it is your job to find out what it is and to enlist some outside help – a counselor, minister or therapist. The school can probably help you sort it out. In the meantime, why not engage him in a physical activity to get his chi flowing. The Answer Lady is a great believer in the ancient Chinese philosophies governing Yin and Yang and Feng Shui. Why not have the whole family sign up for the upcoming Sole Man Run for Character? It is a 5k this Saturday. Not having prepared, you’ll lose, but what fun you will have doing it. Maybe it will shake the doldrums right out of your son or at least get him back on track.

ALEAH is a friendly, fun-loving dog. Her favorite thing is playing fetch with people; she will sit and do almost anything you want if you just indulge her. She’s also into walking on a leash without pulling... she is smart and learns quickly! Aleah lived with a cat in her previous home and is a dogfriendly pup!
«
WILLOW can be a bit nervous and is easily spooked, so no scary movies for her! She likes other dogs and cats and older children, but can be a little anxious around little kids. Give her a second chance and see what makes this dog a shelter favorite!
«
DESTINY is a sweet, calm, older girl who loves other animals and would be a great family pet. Or a great pet for a single person. Or a great pet for anyone! She wants to play, but mostly Destiny likes to snuggle... our kind of gal. Can you spare the room in your home and heart? We think you can!

GRIMM is a sweet and social boy, who loves to be pet, and he’ll do anything for a wet food treat! Plus, he’s super cute... just look at those eyes. Grimm, like all shelter cats, is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and his adoption fee is only $20.
«
MADISON loves to be pet but with all his paws on the ground... and he would make a great mouser! He really wants to go to a forever home soon, so if you are interested in a new buddy, please come down to the shelter to meet this cutie.
«
BIFF is starting to get used to the routine at the shelter and he’s getting more social by the day... but that doesn’t mean he isn’t loneley without a forever home. If you think you could spare the time and love for a guy down on his luck, come give Biff a second chance. His adoption fee is $70.

The book that everyone in Cape May is talking about
Dennis J. Spilker Manager/Funeral Director N.J. Lic. No. 4038
David M. Danaher Funeral Director N.J. Lic. No. 3285
It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.
These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
kay, residents. They’re gone now. The big birding weekend is over. It’s safe to come outdoors and not have to worry about some weirdo wearing binoculars trying to show you some dirt-colored sparrow. The checkout line at the Wawa won’t be a quarter mile long at 5am. There will be parking at Higbee Beach. Unless some smoking hot Code 5 rare bird shows up, the visiting birder numbers will be scant to nil until April/May. Of course you’ll still have to deal with the ever growing number of local birders who are retiring en mass and moving here. Why? For much the same reason you live here. Cape May is a swell place to hide from the world. Or else, it would be, except for the swarms of visiting birders whose ranks are growing all the time. Last figure I saw was 67,000,000 birders in the US. And this figure doesn’t include Canadian birders or European birders who have likewise concluded that Cape May is North America’s bird watching playground. Of course this is

good news for people in the tourist industry, not so good news for people who try and get their Wawa coffee before dawn. My advice: sleep in or become a birder yourself. Knowing birds lets you put a face to the Cape’s natural treasure, and open the doors to a lifetime of discovery. Okay, here’s your first assignment. Head over to the Hawk Watch platform at Cape May Point State Park and get a look at the drake Eurasian Wigeon. It’s a stunning bird and you should be able to see one pretty

quickly. There will be plenty of experienced birders around to help you pick out the Eurasian from among the scores of American Wigeon. Yes, I know it’s called a hawk watch platform, but birders are equal opportunity observers and waterfowl are stunning this time of year. Then it’s on to Lighthouse Pond East for looks at Wood Duck, another designer duck, providing you can tear yourself away from all the Northern Pintail and shoveler and Ruddy Ducks and all the other great waterfowl that arrive just about the time the birders leave. You don’t have to hurry, ducks will be here until Bunker Pond Freezes, although I can’t swear the Eurasian Wigeon will stick. Birds have free will. Now you see them, now you don’t. But if you want to skip the field course, you can always buy Ducks, Geese and Swans of North America, by F.H. Kortright... but it is cheaper to just head on over to Cape May Point and see ducks for real. And when the ducks all take wing, look up for an eagle. Eagles are big fans of ducks, too.
