Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
f you are reading this, then the chances are that you either live here or visit Cape May fairly regularly. In which case, there IS much to be thankful for (yes, I’m writing a Thanksgiving-related column). I was chatting with the production person who’s chiefly responsible for making sure this little periodical gets to you on time — his name is Kurtis Patterson and he works for Press and Journal Publications, based in Middletown, PA, who have been printing our magazine for 10 years. Kurtis came here the other day with his friend Patrick in order to catch some striper to augment their Thanksgiving meal. Turns out they caught nothing (losers!), but Kurtis sent me a note to say how much he loved this place — it was only his second visit to Cape May. “It’s a beautiful place, you are very lucky to live there,” Kurtis wrote after making the four-hour drive back to central Pennsylvania. And he’s right. Maybe if you’re an 18-year-old who grew up here, you might not agree with this. But you will one day — oh yes, you will. You just don’t know it yet. So, here are some other things I am thankful for...
BIRD IS THE WORD
Philanthropists are a crucial and dynamic part of any vibrant community. Look through pages 64-77 of this issue and you will see a magnificent example of that — the Kindle auto group giving away $100,000 to local organizations. That’s pretty amazing. It’s not like successful entrepreneurs HAVE to give money away to deserving causes — it’s just that there are some who feel the need to give back. And Bill Kindle is one of those people. On our doorstep we have Cape Resorts (Congress Hall, Virginia hotel, Rusty Nail/ Beach Shack etc), helmed by Curtis Bashaw, which donates space and money to local non-
profits year-round — the West Cape May Christmas Parade fundraiser in Congress Hall Ballroom is the most recent example. I’m also thankful to people like Dave and Chris Clemans, who moved here from Westfield, NJ 31 years ago and went on to run a B&B (John F. Craig), open a real estate firm (Chris Clemans) and a restaurant (Cucina Rosa). They also relocated and renovated a couple of old whalers’ cottages and have given a great deal of their money and time to many local non-profits. I’m mentioning Dave and Chris in this particular column because their Washington Street Mall restaurant, Cucina Rosa, is entering its last month of operation. Dave and Chris will hand over the property to Mark Platzer (former C-View owner) in mid-December. Dave and Chris aren’t going anywhere (thankfully), but I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the stellar contributions they continue to make to the community. The older (wiser?) I get the more I realize the difference between the people who complain and the people who contribute. I wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving.

The Fabulous $25 Cape Atlantic Book Company Giveaway Our roving photographer bumped into Marina from Wildwood on her way to Wawa. To make her day, we gave her a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. How long have you lived in New Jersey? For 10 years. What do you do for a living? I work at the Cape May Fish Market on the Washington Street Mall. What’s the most fun thing you did last summer? I made a trip with friends and their kids to see Niagara Falls. How do you feel about the off-season here? Now is when I have time to do all of the things I want to do, like hang out with my 10-year-old son and go to his soccer games. What kind of books are you into? Nicholas Sparks books, although sad, are full of reallife experiences and very good. Plans for the holidays? New York City with friends! The winner of our next giveaway will get a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

Twenty-one years ago we opened a new restaurant at the corner of the Washington Street Mall at Perry Street in the landmark city of Cape May. Cucina Rosa would mark the beginning of a longheld dream shared by a mother and father and son Guy, already a professional chef of consummate skill. It also served to honor the memory of a beloved Italian grandmother Rosa, who raised Christina in Richmond, Virginia with great love, within the magic of her kitchen or cucina, always a place of comfort and wonderment. It has been an honor for we three to live out our dream together with so many of Cape May’s exceptional and supportive people, so many enthusiastic and loyal customers to whom we owe a great debt. We thank you! As you can imagine, the restaurant business is very demanding and as we’ve grown much older, the time seems right and despite
profound regrets, we know that we must do this now. We will remain open through mid-December and after that, comfort ourselves with the grand memories you have provided. The location is sold, but the name, Cucina Rosa, will remain with us. We want also to thank our exceptional staff who have worked tirelessly, some from our opening day, to provide you with the very best service and a warm and friendly atmosphere. Managers, servers, buss staff, cooks and kitchen staff are all responsible for your enjoyment. Goodbye for now and thank you, Chris and David Clemans Guy Portewig Cucina Rosa

The Old Fogey
T
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
he lighthouse must go. Now, now, stop those angy little fists from clenching, unfurrow those brows and tear up that Letter to the Editor you’d already written in tightlyspaced green ink, about how Things Are Not How They Used to Be. The thing is, as a tourist attraction, it is just too scary. I strode fearlessly up the spiral staircase only a few weeks ago, jauntily not holding on at all, and witnessed sweating, trembling tourists hiding at every landing, hanging on to each other and weeping. At the top, inside, a trio of elderly ladies stood in a huddle, eyes closed, praying for miraculous delivery to the ground without having to move. Outside, I found a family from Philly edging round the metal platform an inch at a time, hyperventilating. I of course offered some constructive advice, in the form of a shouted: “Get a grip.” In my day, the viewing platform atop the lighthouse did not even have a guard-rail: the gently sloping metal platform simply ended in a sheer drop, and when it was icy
or wet, one could see hapless tourists sliding slowly towards the edge, sometimes doing that amusing running-on-the-spot-to-noavail thing common to better cartoons. We used to have our annual unicycle challenge up there: 50 laps, with the winner being the only one not spread over a large area below. And do you remember the time we thought to spice the attraction up and have the platform revolve slowly, like the fashionable restaurants in magazines? That was a bold plan, though our decision to award the contract for the spinning mecha-

nism to Joey “Chancer” Capuano because he undercut the other bids by 90 percent was, in retrospect, a slight mistake: a dozen lucky citizens were assembled for the opening ceremony, and a huge crowd gathered below to watch. At midnight, Joey threw the switch and the platform began to spin slowly, to massed cheers and oohing and aahing. “Who wansta to go fasta?” asked Joey, and instantly turned a red dial that we had not asked for to “11”. In seconds, the delighted laughing had turned to breathless shrieking and an earsplitting hum filled the night air. All over town, lights dimmed and then went out. The humming got louder, the platform spun faster and the screams grew fainter until with a deafening roar, the lighthouse tower snapped off at its base and actually moved 30 feet from its base (you can still see the original foundations in the car park). Finally, someone thought to remove Joey from the controls and the lighthouse settled again. We never dared to turn it on again, except for a few seconds, to hurl Joey far out to the ocean.

Gayle Stahlhuth reviews the creepy-but-cool “Nightcrawler”
ou Bloom is not a typical thief. His eyes seem to fairly pop out of his sockets whether he’s stealing a watch or spouting platitudes from a self-help book. His smile is the same whether he’s trying to ask a woman to dinner or explain to his employee why he’s not giving him a raise. Bloom, the main character played by Jake Gyllenhaal in the new film Nightcrawler, is a fast learner – and a sociopath. We’re fascinated by sociopaths — Clockwork Orange, Psycho, No Country for Old Men — which will continue as long as books and films exist. Just when the audience thinks there might be some glimmer of redeeming quality, the sociopath does something completely amoral. Bloom’s excitement mounts as he watches a freelance commando crew dodge among firemen and police to get good images of injured people and mayhem. When he learns that local TV news stations pay good money for such footage, Lou sells a stolen bike to purchase a camera and a police scanner and waits for chaos to erupt.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a convincing sociopath in the thriller Nightcrawler And for him, the bloodier the better. Nina (Rene Russo), a TV producer eager to hold on to her job, likes Bloom’s violent images. He goes further and further into crime and death to give her what she wants. Some at the TV station think Bloom goes too far, but Nina focuses on the ratings, and Bloom likes the money. Needing help with his enterprise, Bloom hires a young man named Rick (Riz Ahmed), who lives on the streets, to drive the car

and navigate. And soon, Rick, too is given a camera. Gyllenhaal remains committed to his creepy character from first to last, and Russo is convincing as the hard-boiled producer. But Ahmed — now there’s a relatively new actor on the scene to look for in future films. He’s effortless in his ability, which, of course, takes effort. This is Dan Gilroy’s first film as director, and it’s an impressive premiere. Until now, he’s been known as a screenwriter for such films as The Bourne Legacy. He also wrote this script, and it’s smart. His brother, John Gilroy, edited the film and, by-the-by, Rene Russo is Dan Gilroy’s wife. James Newton Howard, who’s scored numerous films since the 1980s, including The Bourne Legacy, provided a driving score fit for the life of a Nightcrawler prowling the Los Angeles streets from dusk to dawn. There are some well-done car chase scenes, and moments that will take the viewer by surprise. The movie is edgy and the satire about TV news is spot on, but had it had more bite, the satire would have truly popped.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, “Christmas in Wisconsin” in Cape May
ews flash — things don’t make you happy. You already knew this, but at Christmas time, it’s easy to forget. You want to be the fun aunt, so you convince yourself that your overindulged niece or nephew really does need another electronic gadget. Take a deep breath and get something that can bring happiness — take the kid to see a show. Things don’t make you happy, but experiences do. Recent research reported at LiveScience.com asserts that people who buy experiences are happier, whether it’s a trip to Tahiti, a trip to the movies, or a trip to see a show by the East Lynne Theater Company. If you take a kid along on your experience, you can make them, and their parents, happy too. The East Lynne Theater Company offers Christmas in Wisconsin: Tales by Zona Gale. The storyteller-style show is a look back at Christmas in a simpler time, when children would look forward to small luxuries from Santa, like an orange, a homemade toy, or maybe some popcorn. The Pulitzer Prizewinning Gale created characters based on people from her hometown of Portage,
Wisconsin, where she was born in 1874. She packs her tales with shrewd, sweet and funny observations on life in a small town, where people are wrapped up in each other’s business with the kind of nosiness born of real caring. These are strong people facing challenges without sugarcoating, but there’s nothing preachy. Their entertaining disputes showcase serious issues, like the changing role of women, the drawbacks of new technology
(the telephone), and the “right” way to care for people in need. Gale was an activist as well as an author. She knew what is was like to be hungry, because she often skipped meals to send money home to her family. She lobbied for the 1921 Wisconsin Equal Rights Law, argued for peace during World War I and worked for progressive causes. She married for the first time at 54 and died of pneumonia at the age of 64. Christmas in Wisconsin: Tales by Zona Gale plays weekends through December 13 at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Check the website, eastlynnetheater.org, for exact showtimes and dates. Tickets are $30; $25 for seniors; $15 for students. Make a date for dinner and a show. Have someone take a picture of the two of you and wrap that up to put under the tree. You get to bond with the child who may select your nursing home, and there’s no danger of the big guy getting credit for your gift. Everybody wins. Heck, take the little brother along. Kids under 12 are free at East Lynne. Bonus: when you take all of the children out of the house, you give the parents time to help Santa.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady How do I remedy the miscommunications which exist between my motherin-law, my husband and me. For example, last week she promised to watch the baby. When I went over to drop him off, she wasn’t home. When I asked her about it, she shrugged and said she’d told my husband she could not babysit and didn’t remember telling me she could. Last month, she invited us over to dinner. She told me 7pm, but told my husband 6pm. Is she forgetful or just playing games? — Forgetful? Dear Forgetful? She probably is playing games, but you’ll never be able to nail her on it without forming a wedge between your mother-
in-law and her son and that is a lose-lose for everyone. The Answer Lady suggests two things — that you put everything in writing via text, email and or handwritten note. Secondly, that you use your husband as your primary for communications — which is probably what she wants anyway — to eliminate you from the equation. If she tries to make arrangements with you, simply tell her you are forgetful and it would be better to tell your husband. In the meantime, march down to the Exit Zero
Store and find something nice for her. The old “catch more f lies with honey” adage, honey. Dear Answer Lady The annual office Christmas party is just around the corner and I suppose I shall have to look forward to watching my wife throw down three martinis and then throw herself at my boss again. And watch him let her. This is so embarrassing and when I confront her with it, she says, “It’s all harmless fun.” It isn’t harmless to me. Any answers for me Answer Lady? — Holiday Stewing Dear Stewing Don’t go to the party. Book reservations at Congress Hall and treat your fair lady with a lovely weekend away from it all, complete with your very own Winter Wonderland. Take a carriage ride through the streets and play tourist. When the boss asks about your whereabouts, simply tell him someone made you an offer you couldn’t refuse. Then your wife can make whoopee with you after her third martini.

HEIDI is a sweet girl who loves to play, and is great with kids, cats, and dogs! She can be a little nervous in new situations but once she gets used to what’s going on, she relaxes and has fun. Plus, Heidi loves to snuggle so... c’mon. She’s practically perfect. Check her out at the shelter ASAP, because this one won’t last.
«
DIAMOND was frightened when she first came to the shelter; now, she’s fun-loving and OBSESSED with playing fetch. And, oh yea, she loves people, too. Other cool qualities include: walking nicely on leash, learning to relax in crate, and being dog-friendly. She’s also a super student in CLASS (canine life and social skills trainig).
«
DESTINY is a pointer mix who is older, meaning she’s calm and sweet. She’s loves other dogs and would make an excellent family pet (or an excellent pet for a single person... she’s versatile!). Destiny loves to play, she loves to snuggle, and for the love of all toys squeaky, she’d be a damn good investment.

PAUL has been waiting patiently since June of 2012 for a forever home... he came to the shelter with his brother Peter and sister Mary (ha!) and all of the siblings have been making great strides toward becoming less nervous. All they need to become the world’s best lap cats is a forever home where they feel safe. Adoption fee is $35.
«
OZZY is a big friendly fella who is a big fan of petting. He would likely be happier in a quiet home, as he’s had a rough life. Care to make it better? If you think you could spare the love for a guy down on his luck, give Ozzy his second chance. He is up to date on all vaccines and neutered, and the adoption fee is only $35.

KEESHA is a sweet, declawed older girl who loves to cuddle, and who would prefer to be an indoor — and an only — pet. Keesha qualifies for the seniors for seniors program, meaning she’s free to a person 62 or older. Bonus: she’s totally stinking adorable.

Bird Droppings
A
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
nd suddenly it’s beach weather. When the earth inclines toward the Solstice and temperatures don’t rise above 50 degrees, Cape May birders realize that beach season is upon us. It’s time to stop beating the bushes and bring binoculars to bear on that iconic strip of ground quartz that supports a seasonal array of winter specialties — birds whose specializations allow them to exploit the scant resources of this narrow piece of habitat. Standing first in line are Snow Buntings, a house Sparrow-sized Arctic breeder that forages on weed seeds and looks much like the cobble-strewn sand around it... until the flock explode into flight assuming the guise of tumbling snow flakes. Settling once again, they defy eyes to find them. Where you find Snow Buntings you’ll also find the odd Lapland Longspur and Horned Lark, two more tundra breeders who consider the Jersey shore in December winter retreat. Another bird worth searching for is the Ipswitch Sparrow, a handsome type which breed exclusively on Sable Island,
11 HOPPYS LANE, CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE Large 4 BR, 3.5 BA home on 175x240 lot with 2 car garage, deck and walk in closets. $374,900
Nova Scotia and winter along the Atlantic Coast. You’ll probably first be alerted to the presence of wintering songbirds by their calls: a high lisping “seet” for Savannah, and a dry rattle or whistled “chew” for Snow Bunting and lomgspur. Other upper beach species to search for include Northern Harrier and Short-eared owl and Cooper’s Hawk which will be looking for the same birds you are. Since their bird-finding skill best yours try watching
them and see what they flush. Lower down on the beach, close to the water’s edge you’ll find gulls, mostly Herring but also the smaller Ring-billed and larger Great Black-backed. Gulls have a confusing array of plumages relating to age and classes, and while gull plumage is confusing, gulls play fair. They commonly cluster, inviting comparison, and allow close approach. Biggest and darkest backed is Great Blackbacked Gull. Slightly smaller and pale gray above is adult Herring Gull. Pale gray above and smallest is Ring-billed Gull. Ring-billed also tend to be at the extreme end of the flock or foraging down near the wave action. If you see a very tiny tern-like gull fluttering over the water it’s a Bonaparte’s Gull. These Arctic breeding gulls can often be seem flying near or sitting on the water close to the Second Avenue Jetty. For rare and unusual species check the Cape May Bird observatory Website. Examples include. Eiders, alcids and of course any Snowy Owls — this might be the year to ask for that Spotting Scope for the Holidays.
