Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

spend a lot of time promoting the virtues of Cape May and I tend to hang around with people who feel the same way — that we live in an amazing place and that visitors (and locals!) should always be treated with respect. So I was disappointed to hear a couple of unfortunate stories relating to the Riggins company, an auto repair shop and gas station who also handle Cape May’s towing requirements. On a recent Saturday, Chantel Semanchick, who moved here three years ago to take over the Cape May Carriage Company, had to have her truck towed when it broke down on Washington Street. Chantel wrote me a long note explaining what happened — for brevity’s sake, I will boil it down. A tow truck arrived from Riggins, who are based at the tip of the island, and Chantel asked if she could pay at the scene — the Cape May City ordinance allows for a $125 fee. The driver told Chantel she should pay at the Riggins office. She waited till after the weekend and then spent some time at the beginning of the next week making arrangements to have her

BIRD IS THE WORD

truck taken to a diesel mechanic — Chantel says that on a previous visit to Riggins that she’d been told by owner Barney Linn that his company didn’t work on diesel trucks. After making arrangements with a mechanic in the Villas, she visited Riggins to pay her bill. “That’s when the owner Barney stepped in and told me that he had already started to diagnose the truck and figured out what was wrong. I was taken aback because I knew that they did not work on diesel trucks or at least that’s what they told me a year ago,” says Chantel. Barney told her to come back the next

day for an estimate. When she did, he told her the cost would be $3812. “I immediately said do not touch my truck — I will be in tomorrow to have it towed to another location as I am NOT going to put that much money into a vehicle that old,” says Chantel, who says her truck is 10 years old and has 300,000 miles on the clock. “When I arrived Friday morning I was met by the owner and his mechanic in the parking lot — they didn’t even allow me to get out of my truck,” says Chantel. “That’s when he informed me that a substantial amount of that $3,800 estimate was work that he already did. That’s when I kind of freaked out and said I never authorized him to touch the truck in the first place. He insisted that he was told by the tow truck driver that I wanted them to diagnose the truck. This went back and forth for a few minutes then he claimed he had $2000 worth of work into the truck. I refused to pay because I didn’t authorize it,” says Chantel, who has since begun legal proceedings to get her truck back. She returned to Riggins a few days later with an officer from Cape May Police

Page 14

Department, asking if she could pay her towing and storage bill and get her truck back, but she was refused. I spoke to CMPD chief Rob Sheehan on Monday, and he confirmed that an officer had been present and that Chantel had made a complaint — one of many that the department has received about Riggins in the past few years. This magazine’s Historical Editor Ben Miller also had an unhappy interaction with Riggins during a short visit he and his wife Andrea made to Cape May last week. Andrea parked in front of a private driveway while they went to dinner — it was dark and she didn’t realize her mistake until she heard that the homeowner had called Riggins, who towed the Millers’ car. When Andrea went to Riggins the next day, she says she was treated horribly by staff and that she was charged $205 when the city ordinance only allows for $125. “I have received many private messages about problems with Riggins. It’s shocking just how many people have been hurt by this company,” said Ben. I spoke to Mayor Ed Mahaney about these two incidents and he said that the city was studying the towing ordinance in the light of two other incidents relating to

Riggins that had been reported. “One month ago, certain concerns arose — as a result, myself and the city manager met with Cape May Police Department. While assuming you’re innocent till proven guilty, we are conducting a thorough investigation and are already taking action on one of the matters,” said Mayor Mahaney. “Any of your readers who has had an experience that has not been fair should notify CMPD immediately. It’s unacceptable to have this kind of situation — if it exists. We have to find out the truth.” I spoke with Riggins owner Barney Linn on Tuesday morning. Barney said he didn’t want to say too much about the Chantel Semanchick incident because it was in litigation, but he did say, “We 100% followed our procedure. She authorized us to troubleshoot her vehicle. That’s why she had it towed there in the first place. I offered to reach an arrangement that was agreeable to both of us, but she decided to get a lawyer instead.” In the case of Andrea Miller, Barney said he was not there when she visited the station. “I’m looking into that, but you have to realize that we’re stuck in the middle here. We’re not running a business like a restaurant where people go to enjoy themselves.

So tasty

you may be tempted to use both at once.

When people come here about towing, they are defensive and it’s tough. It’s not like we’re roaming the streets looking to tow people. I hate this side of the business to tell you the truth.” Regarding the $205 fee, Barney said the extra cost is for winching the vehicle, which has to be done when the owner is not around and there is no access to the vehicle. But he added that the CMPD had asked him to refund the extra money the Millers had paid and that he was planning on doing that. Now for some happier news... the PBS travel show Getting Away Together will be coming to Cape May — if we as a community can come together and sponsor this event. If the community can raise $50,000 for expenses, by August 15, the film crew will plan to be here by the beginning of September, with the 30-minute show airing as early as October. Other towns have reported that the show really captured the “essence” of their destination, so this feels like a pretty good idea to me. CapeBank has already committed $12,500. To contribute, mail a check made payable to Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May and send to CapeBank, 217 Jackson Street, Cape May, NJ 08204. Exit Zero is going to donate $500 if that inspires you to dip into your pocket!

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

watched that cinematic feature about the revolting apes the other day and left the picture house with a peculiar mix of trepidation, amusement and nostalgia. The latter because I remember and miss the days when virtually every home in Cape May had a monkey butler, not to mention an orangutan driver and a gorilla doorman. It all came about when Billy Smart’s Simian Circus train derailed one night and the next morning we awoke to find the city awash with monkeys. Now, less sophisticated cities might have handled it less well, but Cape May citizens are nothing if not fast to see opportunity, and before you could say “Mighty Joe Young”, the apes had an agent and were being rented out for all sorts of domestic tasks. We ourselves had a trio of capucin monkeys as butlers, and I must say they rose to the occasion, dusting and tidying and flinging handfuls of excrement at anyone who forgot to remove their shoes when they entered the mansion and a baboon chef named Albie. I must admit that although his souffle was simply divine, I always lost my

appetite at the sight of that swollen purple derriere (he refused to wear pants). There were, in total, several thousand apes in town, and for a while things were downright idyllic. The silverback cops were the perfect mixture of gentle patience and extreme violence, the spider monkey telephone operator was lightning fast, and the chimp sanitation workers were ruthlessly efficient if a little prone to eating the extremities of rival work gangs. But matters turned sour when a thoughtful gorilla ran for mayor and, with half the

town’s inhabitants simian in origin, he won the popular vote on a plaform of free bananas, subsidies for peanut farmers and a tricyclesharing scheme. We took this badly and acted in a manner so shameful that, to this day, I cannot look a monkey in the face: we called up Billy Smart himself and informed him that the telegram from Cape May telling him that all his apes were deceased was in fact a slight overstatement and in fact they were ready for collection. Sure enough, Billy arrived with a score of burly carneys with dart guns, and in an hour we were simian-free. There was an awkward moment when a crate fell open and out tumbled a sleeping gorilla resplendent in three-piece suit and mayoral chain of office. Billy raised an eyebrow and we all shuffled awkwardly until the moment passed. From that day, a local law has forbidden any apes from entering the city limits. Even the screening of that ape movie caused some soul-searching, and a realization that the monkeys might not have forgotten of forgiven. Beware, lest we some day become Ape May.

The Activity Column

ne morning during your visit to Cape May, make time for a stroll along the promenade. Cape May’s promenade is our answer to a boardwalk. The last wooden walkway was destroyed in a storm in 1962, and the town responded with pavement. The result is an almost two-mile strip of asphalt with an outstanding view of the ocean. It’s pleasantly crowded in the morning. You’ll see people greeting each other; coworkers, longtime local neighbors, or new friends who met at their B&B yesterday. They travel singly, in pairs or in groups, talking or sharing companionable silence. A few people attempt businesslike phone conversations, as if the call of the seagulls and the crash of the waves in the background would not distract the listener from whatever profit/loss statement is under discussion. Fit women run by like Artemis on the hunt, phone strapped to the arm like an amulet, hair streaming behind, dayglo sneakers pounding a steady rhythm on the pavement. Their male counterparts are there too, mus-

cled to perfection, distracting enough to make you walk into the side of a bench — in theory. Wait, what were we discussing? For every person who moves with joy, there is another who plods with the steady determination to meet a goal, who checks the Fitbit frequently to be sure to count steps, or time, or distance. Some move with easy grace, others are hobbled a bit by age or injury, though they are still plugging along. The promenade is not the best place for full-speed training — runners must be ready to stop for shutterbugs, little kids, people who stop to read the messages on the benches, and

anyone else who strolls along in that relaxed vacation fog the promenade promotes. Through the actual fog you see people practicing yoga on the beach on one side and families lining up for breakfast on the other. You’ll encounter people pushing baby carriages. Little kids, still in pajamas, march with the pent-up energy of a good night’s sleep. The adults, too, adopt a casual dress code. Some are dressed in very little, others wear long sleeves against the power of the early morning sunshine. A few — birdwatchers, perhaps, or photographers — sport multipocketed vests stuffed with tools. Bicyclists pass, conscious of the need to be off the promenade by 10, unconscious of the spray of mud that decorates their spines every time they go through a puddle. A father sits on a bench, tickling the belly of a cranky toddler who laughs in spite of himself, as the older kids ride back and forth. It’s a nice way to start your day. The promenade’s comfort stations are open seasonally from about 7am. Dogs are not allowed.

Take a short stroll from the center of town and explore a different side of Cape May. The Movie Column

W

By Tom Sims, Executive Director, Cape May Film Festival

hat would a summer be without pirates on film? On Sunday, August 3, East Lynne Theater and Cape May Film Festival begin a two-part pirate series that is perfect summertime movie lover’s fun. On Sunday, August 3, we begin the series with Crimson Pirate (1952). Burt Lancaster is the original Caribbean pirate who swings into the middle of a revolution on the islands in the late 1700s. This comedy adventure comes complete with a screwy scientist, prison breaks, big ships, and of course swordplay. According to notes on the film, the screenplay by Waldo Salt was at first passed on by Hollywood because of Salt’s supposed ties to Communism. It crossed that hurdle but not before director Robert Siodmak changed the original story who was credited for turning it into a comedy. The film is said to be the inspiration for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride at their park. It’s interesting to consider that the ride was the inspiration for the hit movie series —

Ready for some rocking pirate-themed fun? so you could say this film inspired the series. While the film is set in the Caribbean, it was filmed at Teddington Studios in England and on the island of Ischia in Italy. Burt Lancaster and friend Nick Cravat made nine films together, two of the more popular ones were this one and The Flame and the Arrow (released two years earlier). Lancaster maintained Cravat on his payroll for life, as trainer and co-star. Cravat’s character in both films cannot speak, so the myth continued that he actually was. In

reality, Cravat was not given any dialogue because his unmistakable Brooklyn accent could not be controlled. Sources at Turner Classic Movies invite you to look for a small mistake in the film: “About 10 minutes from the end of Crimson Pirate, Lancaster and Cravat are in a hotair balloon and about to recapture their pirate ship. The movie shows a wide shot broadside view of the pirate ship as they are approaching. In the background, is a modern luxury liner cruise ship; one that is quite out of place in the eighteenth century.” On Sunday, August 10, the series ends with The Black Pirate (1926) starring that fabulous swashbuckler Douglas Fairbanks. This is a silent movie with live organ accompaniment from award-winning musician Wayne Zimmerman (which is becoming a big hit here in Cape May!). Tickets for the shows are $10 for August 3 and $15 for August 10. They both begin at 8:30 at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street in Cape May. For tickets, call 609-884-5898 or buy at www.eastlynnetheater.org.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My best friend pledged to lose weight a year ago. She started going to North Beach Gym with me three times a week and lost 65 pounds. But now when we go to the gym, she starts complaining to anyone and everyone that she “looks so fat.” I find this disturbing on so many levels. I thought it might be the beginning of an eating disorder, but it is not. She just craves the attention. She wants to keep hearing the ooos and ahhhs congratulating her on losing the weight. I don’t want to take anything away from her, but it’s annoying to me and I think unhealthy for her. What should I do? – Peeved Dear Peeved It seems the simplest solution is to directly but KINDLY confront your friend and ask her why she feels the need to beg for compliments when she obviously looks

fabulous. I would suggest brunch at the Mad Batter would be just the ticket. After a couple of mimosas, explain your concerns. The Answer Lady, however, must warn you that this sounds as though it is part of her psychological make-up and nothing you say will change that. Then, I would simply recommend you change your workout schedule and meet socially, away from the gym milieu. Dear Answer Lady My fiancé has invited me to a formal

dinner party hosted by his very wealthy parents and has already warned me to “learn how to eat with the proper fork.” To further complicate matters, it is a fundraiser for a prominent politician and there will be some very high-profile people there. What’ll I do? All those forks and spoons? — Out of Place Dear Out of Place My first suggestion is for you is to examine why you are marrying a man anxious to put you in a potentially embarrassing social situation without any intention of throwing you a lifeline, but we will save that for another letter. Never fear — it really is not that daunting. As each course is served, work your way from the outside in and keep a close eye on your host/hostess to make the first move, until you relax and get the hang of it. And don’t think for one minute that you will be alone in your anxiety. At the end of what the Answer Lady is sure will be a successful evening, remind your fiancé that such snobbery is why the aristocracy lost their heads in the French Revolution. Just make sure you keep yours and all will good.

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

he hardest thing for beginning birders to grasp and then capitalize upon is the mercurial nature of bird distribution. Quickly summarized, birds are not always present at given locations in large numbers. Appearance, movement and distribution are heavily inf luenced by the calendar, weather patterns, vegetative distribution, insect populations and storms. So you can have large numbers of migrating shorebirds in the South Cape May Meadows one day and none the next. If a cold front passes there will be more birds because in fall many species take advantage of tail winds produced by such fronts to migrate in numbers. This goes for hawks and songbirds, too Bands of rain associated with cold fronts also prompt birds to land. But if it rains too hard then the ponds in South Cape May fill with water. The smaller shorebird species may not linger because the water is now too deep for them to forage. Conversely if it has been an unusually dry sum-

mer, there may be no water at all in South Cape May. In this case the deeper Bunker Pond’s water levels might now be down low enough to attract hungry shorebirds. So if it’s been dry, skip the Meadows and go to Cape May Point State Park in search of stilt sandpipers, Baird’s sandpiper and American golden plover. The distance between these two locations is less than two miles but it is habitat quality not geographic location that determines where birds will be

and what species will be there. A good place to study Bunker Pond is the Hawk Watch Platform. But if you are interested in seeing hawks you’ll have to wait until late August. Don’t dawdle until January because come the Solstice fall hawk migration is largely over for the season. Yes, there are always birds in Cape May. But they are not uniformly distributed or apportioned. Be in the know and you’ll see more species. There are fourways to be in the know... 1. Spend years learning bird behavior 2. Take advantage of Cape May Bird Observatory’s field trip offerings. The dates and locations are pre-calibrated to catch the best birding opportunities at any given season. 3. Go to the CMBO website and peruse recent bird sightings: www.birdcapemay. org 4. Stop by CMBO at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point and talk to the birdwatching equivalent of the club pro and ask where you should go looking first.
