Ramblings From The Editor
E
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
very summer I make the same vow — that I am going to go out and sample as many different Cape May restaurants as possible. But, like many local business owners, once the summer season hits there are a lot of things vying for your attention — work being the main one. But put your little violin away — I have had a chance to indulge myself recently. I finally sampled the new menu, and took in the new vibe, at the Pilot House, which was taken over in June by a group that also owns the Peter Shields Inn. I was there with my moll, plus Cape May Brewing Company coowner Ryan Krill and his other half, Kaysi Franceus. Naturally, there was an order of Cape May Brewing Company’s IPA from our table, but there were also some damn fine cocktails (loved the Gold Rush with bourbon and honey, and the Cucumber Lemonade Chiller). Food highlights were JP’s Dynamite Shrimp, superb crab cakes, and one of the better fish and chips in town (I’m British, so I know about fish and chips). The Pilot House underwent a quick facelift (a fresh paint scheme and some new furniture) but will get a proper makeover this coming winter
BIRD IS THE WORD
A few nights later, the moll and I went to another place that’s recently had a redo — M’Ocean, the restaurant formerly known as Martini Beach, a place that’s always had a special place in my heart (it was a second home for the Exit Zero gang in the early days of this little rag). I loved the fresh new decor — they really nailed it. The place seems more airy, with a classy, but not cheesy, beach vibe. After getting a cocktail from Zach Smith at the bar (the Capistrano Beach is highly recommended), we moved to the porch — there’s no better view of the beach from a restaurant table on this island. As was always the case
at Martini Beach, the food was great, but the new vibe has taken this place up a notch. Then last week we enjoyed what is absolutely THE most inventive new eating experience in Cape May. Those Karapanagiotis boys — Yanni and Pete (George’s Place, the YB and Pano) — have opened up an eatery called Shamone on Washington Street, across from the Blue Rose Inn (next on my to-do list). Shamone is nothing like anything else on this island — there is only one sitting, at 7pm, though I shouldn’t say sitting since there are no seats. Instead, a maximum of 30 will come in and hang out at elbow-height counters while paying $25 for 15 (count ’em) courses served in a fashion that feels more like a private party than a restaurant. It won’t be for everyone, especially those who don’t eat meat, but I have to applaud the K-Boys for trying something so different. It can only further enhance Cape May’s reputation by having enterprising, inventive stuff like this happening. And the name? It’s Michael Jackson speak for “Come on,” says Yanni. Of course. Tonight (Thursday), Movies on the Beach features Jaws. Be on the beach behind Convention Hall by 8pm, at the latest.

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

Mainly people carried away by current How long have you lived in Cape May? Five summers and two full years. How long do you plan on living in Cape May? I’ll hang out for a bit — it’s not bad living next to the ocean. What’s your favorite type of fudge? Peanut butter chocolate fudge. Do you have a message for our readers? The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
saw a doodle the other day, and was not impressed. I forget which kind of doodle: perhaps it was a schnoodle, or may have been a golden doodle, possibly even a labradoodle. It was a mid-sized type of creature, with curly dirty-blonde hair and an expression on its face that did not suggest hidden depths. “This is Teddy Baxter,” said the owner hopefully, as I curled my lip in disdain. “What in the name of the seven hells IS it?” I asked mildly. “Did you create it from the sweepings of a barbershop and five pounds of stuffing?” “He’s a poodle cross,” stuttered the chap, then muttered about the sire being a labrador or something else. “It’s because I’m allergic...” I stared for a full 60 seconds, looking in turn at the shaking owner and expressionless barely-sentient dog. “This,” I offered at last, gesturing to my feet, “is Young Albert. He is a Yorkshire terrier with a lineage going back 2,000 years. His ancestors were there at Calvary, with Attila the Hun when he rode into Rome and by Saladdin’s side in
Jerusalem. He is not an oodle.” Now don’t get me wrong — I am not a pedigree snob. But although I have had many generations of Alberts at my side, I am a fan of any and all dogs that display intelligence, cunning or bravery. Shape and size matter not: I once saw a Pekinese at The Alamo who faced down a score of soldiers with a sneer on his tiny face. Of course, he lasted approximately one hundredth of a second, being as he was minuscule and ridiculous, but I admired his nerve and managed to retrieve his teacupsized sombrero as a reminder that: (a) One
should fear only fear itself; and (b) only a fool does not run away sometimes. And I am reminded of the time in WWII when we liberated a dog pound from the Nazis and formed a special canine regiment from the enraged prisoners. Ruff Riders, I think we called them, and that motley band of mongrels struck fear into the hearts of the enemy, rending SS men and collaborators into tiny pieces (also, in fairness, a random mix of other people we encountered). But doodles are not, in my opinion, a wise idea. They render the very essence of dog into a commodity, to be made hyopallergenic, cuddly and foolish. They very name is a mockery: from wolf to domesticated dog to ... doodle. I have not heard of any plans to compromise Albert’s breed in this fashion and create a Yorkiedoodle. And I fear for the day someone tries and turns up in Cape May with the hybrid horror that results, lest they bump into Albert, and bloodshed ensues. Spoodles, doodles, whoodles and French boodles — they all need to be bred with wolves, and sharpish!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, get crabby
A
ccording to the zodiac, the season of the crab is over for this year, but seafood lovers in Cape May know it’s still prime time for the tasty crustacean. There are lots of ways to enjoy crab. You can catch your own —crab season here runs from March through November, or April to December in the Delaware Bay. New Jersey Recreational Crabbing Regulations say that crabs “may be taken with hand lines, manually operated collapsible traps, or scoop nets without a license,” that hard crabs must be at least 4.5 inches, and that “all female crabs with eggs attached shall be returned to the water immediately.” For bait, you can use chicken necks, fish heads, mullet or, apparently, any other raw, stinky, meat. You’ll see crabbers wherever you can lean over the water — Elmira Street on the way to West Cape May is a popular spot. We’ve had luck with bait clipped to a string, but you have to hold the line still, and you have to be patient. When you see the crab go for the bait, you reel in the line
until you can reach down and scoop the crab up with the net. You may lose a few, but keep trying. You can also crab from a small boat. Miss Chris Marina has skiffs for rent. I’ve seen people crabbing from a kayak, too, but you have to stay awfully close to that smelly bait to make it work. Crabbing is the ultimate in amateur fishing, but if you want to learn from an expert, take a course in Crabbing 101. The Nature Center of Cape May offers lessons on board The Skimmer, a flat-bottomed boat that will take you to the best spots. You can
learn how to crab — including how to pick up a crab without getting pinched — with your whole family on Tuesday, August 19. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 for more information. They may be able to add a trip for a party of ten or more. Not a do-it-yourselfer? You can find plenty of prepared crab at Cape May’s restaurants. Consider a take-out taste test — everyone pick up their favorite crab cakes to go, then meet up, cut up the crab cakes, and pick a winner. (Start with the Depot.) Fans of an old-fashioned crab boil will love the Crab and Beer Fest at the Emlen Physick Estate this Saturday, August 9. This all-day festival features local beers, music, Victorian circus acts, crafts, and pulled pork, hot dogs and hamburgers for the landlubbers. Admission is free. There will be a charge for food, beverages and some activities. Proceeds benefit the free educational programs of the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. Next week... stand up for your abs!

By Tom Sims, Executive Director, Cape May Film Festival
he summer of pirate movies continues at East Lynne Theater Company with another classic film — this one a silent. The fan base is building for people that love the silent movies East Lynne brings to town with the help of the Cape May Film Festival and organist Wayne Zimmerman. This Sunday, it’s Douglas Fairbanks, Jr in the 1926 silent, The Black Pirate. Fairbanks plays a swashbuckler who joins a band of pirates to avenge his father’s death. Zimmerman, award-winning composer and performer, will play an original score as the film is screened — and this would not be the first film starring Fairbanks for which Zimmerman has written a score. Last year he played along with Thief of Bagdad. This is great entertainment for the whole family. Why all the sword-fighting good times at the movies in Cape May this summer? Well, first who doesn’t like to see a good ol’ fashioned duel — but also because of the world premiere production of Zorro! currently at East Lynne Theater. I caught a recent show,
Douglas Fairbanks Jr in The Black Pirate and allow me a moment for a brief review of the production. Adapted by playwright James Rana from the serialized novel by Johnston McCulley, Zorro! comes alive from the first moment. Jed Peterson blends several facets of character into his portrayal of the masked avenger, and Elisa Pupko captivates us as the hero’s love interest. Evan Smilyk is wonderful as the young man who would become Zorro (alum of the West Cape May Elementary School stage theater program hosted by East Lynne
Theater, and great casting on the part of Artistic Director Gayle Stahlhuth). The villains are brilliantly portrayed by Mark Edward Lang and playwright Rana himself, and the good friar who gives Zorro his start is masterfully brought to life by Mark Lazar. Suzanne Dawson is particularly charming in a variety of roles in Zorro! as she is in all the times I’ve seen her perform. The sword-fighting is great fun to watch thanks to expert blocking by Joseph Travers. Zorro is the original caped avenger, and this show has all the punch and fun of any blockbuster you’ll see in theaters this summer. “More than mutant turtles?” you ask. Absolutely. “More fun than the Spider Man flick?” Um, if less confusing means more fun — then yes more fun. “Better than Transformers?” You’re kidding, right? See Douglas Fairbanks in The Black Pirate this Sunday, August 10 at 8:30pm at The First Presbyterian Church on Hughes. On Wednesday through Saturday see the new play! Visit www.eastlynnetheater.org or call 609-884-5898 for more information.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My cousin’s wedding is next October and I just got an email from her with a link to the bridesmaids’ dresses. Answer Lady, they are horrid. Orange, poofy sleeves and layers of unwarranted ruffles. My derriere will look like the backend of an orange Big Bird walking down the aisle. Can I not protest this? I feel if I have to look like an orange Big Bird that I would rather not participate. Perhaps I can get a nice case of the flu a week before? Please tell me your support me on this. — Orange is NOT My New Black. Dear Orange is NOT My New Black No, No and No. You may not protest. You may not get the blue flu one week before the wedding. And you do not have the Answer Lady’s support. What you can do is GENTLY suggest an alternative design but not an alternative color. The Answer Lady suggests
an afternoon visit to Uniquely Yours to show her a different style of wedding attire. However, if she is sending you a link, it would appear her mind is made up. You might causally ask the other bridesmaids what they think, but be mindful of the often testy temperament of brides. The Answer Lady’s suggestion is to suck it up and embrace your inner Big Bird. Dear Answer Lady My sister is apparently having an affair and I don’t know what to do. Her husband is
a fisherman and gone for long periods. My main concern is that I came to find out by accident that she is using me to cover for her. My brother-in-law asked me last week how I liked the wine tasting at Hawk Haven. I was able to muff my way through that awkwardness and later asked my sister why she would tell him we went to a wine-tasting. She brushed me off so abruptly that I got suspicious and when she wasn’t looking, checked out her texts. What an eye-opener that was. What do I do? I love my sister, but I won’t be used. — The Patsy Dear Patsy The solution to your dilemma is simple, but know that the consequences may result in a rift between you and your sister. You are correct in not wanting to be complicit in her deceptions. The Answer Lady presumes your brother-in-law is on Facebook. Tell your sister you are onto her and from now on you will be posting your activities on Facebook. The Answer Lady also suggests you make your sister’s fiction a reality and go to Hawk Haven for a Sunday Sangria tasting. Be sure to post the photos on Facebook.
“Todays massage with Mike was a very positive experience. I hold tension in my shoulders and neck and he really was in tune with my issues. His pressure is firm and deep. I really feel the tension gone. My thumbs are very stiff and sore and he worked on them as well. Time will tell if he ‘hit the spot’, but I would highly recommend his massage.” - Sandy F.

ALEAH is the sweetest young pit bull terrier mix that you will likely meet! She would prefer a home without small children but used to live with a cat and loves other dogs. Aleah may be timid at first but once she warms up she is full of personality. Stop on by the shelter and give this cutie a second chance.
«
CHARLIE is a pit bull terrier and Dalmatian mix and loves to smile. This is Charlie’s second time at the shelter because his most recent owner lost him. Luckily the shelter staff remembered him. Charlie would love a home with older children and no other pets. Hopefully this time Charlie will have better luck with his new home.
«
LAYLA is a pit bull terrier and can’t wait to meet you! Her previous owner moved away and couldn’t bring her with them. She is a wonderful sweetheart but is easily spooked by quick movements. Layla would prefer a home with only older kids and no cats. She likes other dogs but she needs to get to know them first.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
e’re running out of magical creatures. I haven’t seen a unicorn in years. And it takes more potcheen than I can afford to commune with a leprechaun these days. But for the purchase of a small plastic hummingbird feeder and a cup of white granulated sugar any Cape May resident can get in-your-face looks at rubythroated hummingbirds from now until midSeptember. And they ARE magical creatures. These mighty mites of the bird world are on their way to the neo-tropics where they will wait out the northern hemisphere’s winter. Hummingbird numbers are at their peak — it’s not uncommon to have half-a-dozen vying for space at your feeder. Not all will have brilliant ruby throats. This plumage feature is found only on adult. Can’t you just plant flowers to attract hummingbirds? Of course! But you should have thought of that back in May. For now a well-placed, well-tended hummingbird feeder is the way to go. Well-placed means in the open, preferably in a shady place to retard

fermentation of sugar water, and high enough to be out of the leap range of cats. Well-tended means you replace the sugar-water solution at least every other day and wash feeders with a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar. The design we favor, called a Hummzinger, is dishwater-safe. It’s easy to fill, easy to clean and easy to monitor fluid levels. Do NOT put up a hummingbird feeder unless you are prepared to tend it properly. Plan to leave your feeder up until mid-
November. By the end of October, the rubythroated will be gone but there are a number of western hummingbird species that may be attracted. Any hummingbird at your feeder after mid-September deserves close scrutiny and it might behoove you to contact a local expert to study the bird. No, you need not worry about tempting hummingbirds to stay too long in the north by leaving feeders up — these birds know their business. Some species live to snow-line in mountainous regions and do fine so long as they have flowers to tend. Anna’s hummingbird — a raspberryheaded beauty — winters in the central coast of California, where nightly temperatures fall into the mid-20s. If you can attract an Anna’s to your feeder, great honor and glory will be yours. But if all you want to do is be enchanted by our native ruby-throated, head over to Cape May Bird Observatory and pick up a Hummzinger — we’re at 601 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. Stop in and chat with the experts, and stick around to watch the show at the CMBO feeders.
