The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
had some mild degree of pleasure attending a wedding in Scotchland recently. I am not at liberty to name the parties involved, for reasons of national security: suffice of to say the groom was one of our fine city’s many gruff, brutish Scotchmen captains of media, and the bride was way too good for him. Which is the way it is meant to be: I had to court the late Mrs D’Catur for a good 10 years before her father would even permit me to shake her gloved hand. It was only when I had returned one day with the fabled Eye of The Caplih emerald as a gift that he took me seriously, in part because a gem weighing in at 3lbs was even to the most untrained eye worth a king’s ramsome. Anyways, the wedding was very much like the movie Brave, with brawny hairy unitelligible bald rogues in kilts shouting and weeping and fighting bare-handed. And that was just the ladies. I do not remember much, having toasted the happy couple with a generous allowance of Highland Park, but the evening did involve a castle, a bear and
the gift of a Scotch Wildcat, which once it finds it way through customs, will be a challenging companion for Young Albert. My own wedding, back in the day, was a humble affair: we lit the beachfront with 5,000 flaming torches and a procession of 10,000 close friends and family made its way from Congress Hall to the Admiral, whose lights had been dimmed and another few thousand torches installed for ambience (that last touch was splendid but ended badly for the Admiral when the hem of a satin cloak brushed a lit torch and the
panicked guest accidentally ran in flames into the brandy cellar). The ceremony was conducted by a Lenape elder and an Irish priest. That had its moments, when conflicting doctrines led to blows, but all was finally calmed and the future Mrs D. walked down the aisle in an ivory dress. Not ivory colored, or such moern nonse, but ivory. It weighed a ton and had 300 wheels hidden under the 50-yard train. I was dressed as a Conquistador, for superstitious reasons not easily explained, and the Young Albert of the day was ring bearer. Next time, should a young lady catch my jaded eye, we will plan a seriously grand affair, with all of you invited and every one of you expected to dress as native species. No more details yet, bur stay tuned. Of course I am not dating as such at the moment, but have conducted a 20-year penpal romance with a European aristocrat: I have delayed meeting as Albert ate the section of the first letter that contained specifics of my sweet’s gender, and I could not easily ask after that.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s time to get Victorian
ictorian Weekend in Cape May features special house tours and lectures. People in period dress wander under the streetlights, and it’s easy to imagine you are back in the nineteenth century. It’s fun to think about strolling in a long dress or a morning coat, but did you ever consider the undergarments? Modern underwear would be confusing to the Victorian-era lady or gentleman. Poor people likely went without undergarments. People of both genders who could afford it wore union suits — one-piece, full-body garments with a drop seat, when it was really cold. The rest of the year, the wealthy wore elaborate undies to protect their expensive clothes. In summer, Victorian men had cotton drawers to the ankle or knee, which tied to keep them from riding up. There were also undervests or shirts. In winter, men wore flannel or wool undergarments. All of this was held up with the help of braces, aka suspenders. Men also wore corsets to narrow
their waists. The jock strap was created in 1874 by C.F. Bennett of a Chicago sporting goods company, for the comfort of all those “bicycle jockeys” on cobblestone streets. By the end of the century, fitted boxers had been invented, and by 1910 the pattern for the modern undershirt and drawers was set. Victorian women might wear pantalettes, loose drawers made of two sections tied together at the waist. After 1856, when hooped skirts came into fashion, women adopted the knickerbockers of men, which were closed drawers without a gap, for
decency’s sake. One false step and the hoop could fly up, revealing all. On top of the drawers, a Victorian lady wore a chemise, tight stays or a corset, and a slip or corset cover. By the early 20th century, women wore the liberty bodice, a looser version of the corset which allowed more freedom of movement, and tap pants. You can learn more about these Victorian secrets at Show Us Your Undies, a fashion show and brunch at the Carriage House Cafe and Tearoom on Monday, October 13 at 10am. Living history presenters will use models to present an “underview” of Victorian clothing and foundations, from day dresses to ball gowns. Tickets are $25. Call MAC at 609- 884-540 or 800-275-4278 for more information. Pair this brunch with the Travel Through Time trolley tour with costumed interpreters. Tickets are $22. Burn off extra calories before the brunch on the 90-minute Cape May on Fire walking tour on October 11 at 10:30. Follow your tour with a visit to Cape May Ablaze, an exhibit at the Carriage House Gallery.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am a certified personal trainer and work hard at it. A long-time friend of mine is about to be divorced and looking for a way to earn a living and has decided to be a trainer too. My problem is this — she does not work very hard, at anything. She did not study for the test and when she went for her certification, the instructor helped her with the answers. I’m so angry. If she gets her certification, she will not be a good trainer and could end up hurting the client. And I’m insulted that she thinks it is so easy that she dismisses my profession as not being worthy of her time. — Sore Dear Sore Karma can always be counted on to bring things right. I suspect your friend never
Wise answers to perplexing questions
wanted to be a trainer but, instead, envied the joy she sees in you when you are training someone. Your world is just a microcosm of what goes on every day in everybody else’s world. Your work ethic is admirable and will never let you down. Put your trust in that. In the meantime, treat yourself. Go to Pink and pick out a dress — size teeny, I’m suspecting, and flaunt that figure you worked so hard for. Let your hard work continue to be an inspiration to those you train.
Dear Answer Lady I want to host a post-wedding tea for my bridal party and in-laws after we return from our honeymoon. I want to have it at 6pm, which I understand is high tea, but my mother said that is incorrect and we should have it at 4? What do YOU say? — Tea Time Dear Tea Time Your mother is correct. In America, 6pm is typically the cocktail hour, while 4-6 is the traditional time for tea. However, you can stretch it and have the tea from say 2-5pm. High Tea (5-7pm) was really a meat-based meal served to the working class. Afternoon tea is what we generally think of as a light repast of sandwiches, scones, sweets and an assortment of teas. The Answer Lady is very fond of afternoon teas, especially ones with sherry served. They can be great fun, not just stuffy affairs served with teeny sandwiches with no crust. Be sure to pick an honored guest to serve tea. Or makes reservations at the Butterfly Tea Room or the Carriage House Café and Tearoom at the Physick Estate and leave the worries to them.

The sounds of autumn are unmistakable... the hurrying rustle of crisp leaves blown along the street by a gusty wind, and the music and excitement at the LIMA BEAN FESTIVAL. The now famous Lima Bean Festival is this Saturday. Everything lima bean will be offered — jewelry, pottery, stain glass, hats, chili, soup, salad, cake, hummus, empanadas, crepes, cookies. And who knows — there might even be lima bean ice cream! Imagine... over 100 vendors offering their wares. And don’t forget — the crowning of the coveted Lima Bean King and Queen. In addition to this long-awaited Festival, our town has even more to offer. Check it out after you’ve seen and tasted everything there is at the Festival. Walk through our charming streets to see all the stores, restaurants, romantic B&Bs — and so much more.

«
CLOUDY is a very smart pit bull terrier. He was brought to the shelter after his previous family fell on hard times. He may be large but he is very sweet and gentle with children. He is crate trained and walks on a leash without pulling. Cloudy has graduated from the CLASS training program and is one smart boy.
«
RUPERT is a pit bull terrier who loves other dogs. When he first arrived at the shelter, Rupert was very anxious but his mom helped him quickly adjust. He is very smart and knows several commands and tricks. Rupert will do best in a home with no young children or cats. If you’re looking for a playful companion, come meet Rupert!
«
PINKY is a fun loving pit bull terrier. She has been at the shelter for over a year and is currently a student in the CLASS training program. Pinky loves working with people and is learning very useful commands that will help her in her forever home. She is also crate trained which will make her transition to a new home much easier.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
BUGSY is a loving boy who is patiently waiting for someone to take him home. He may look shy and reserved but as soon as you pet Bugsy, you’ll have a new best friend. When Bugsy arrived at the shelter he had an eye problem but he has since had surgery and is healed. Best of all, Bugsy’s adoption fee is only $35.
«
PARIS and ROMA are very sweet but a little shy. These sisters are very close and would love to go to a new home together. They have two brothers, Austin and Houston, at the shelter as well. The shelter has a “buy one get one free” program for cats, so you can take both girls home for the price of one adoption fee.
«
REBECCA is a very energetic little girl. She has been patiently waiting at the shelter for two years. She will slow down to let you pet her and maybe, in a few years, she will slow down enough to be a lap cat. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. If you’re looking for a sweet little girl to brighten your day, Rebecca is the cat for you!
