Ramblings From The Editor

F

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

orget the TV this Thursday night. The most interesting, intriguing and informative night of viewing will be happening at Cape May Elementary School, where five candidates will be aiming to show us that they should be winning one of the three seats that are ready to be filled on Cape May City Council. Whatever the outcome of the November 4 election, I think there is going to be a fair old shakeup in City Hall, and that’s a very, very good thing. I’ve been writing for years about how I believe Mayor Ed Mahaney has just a leetle too much influence on how Cape May is being run. The mayor is a very smart and capable man, but he’s had things his own way for a long time, and, in order for the democratic process to operate, he needs to be challenged. There have been some successes under his watch, but I think that the city’s newish Convention Hall is not one of them, and I expect (hope) that to be a hot topic of conversation in the coming weeks. The five candidates represent a good mix of people, in my opinion. The only one of them who isn’t running for office here for the first time is Shaine Meier. He is joined

that, though the local education issue, which is also on the ballot for November 4, will be discussed in these pages in coming issues. Thank you to those who turned up at the West Cape May Christmas Parade fundraiser at the Exit Zero Store last Thursday. We raised a decent amount though, given how much we fed and watered y’all, I would have liked to have seen some larger contributions. If you turned up, enjoyed our hospitality and did NOT make a contribution, then please do so in the coming weeks – the parade relies entirely on public donations. Just to prove we put our money where our mouths are, Exit Zero has donated $500. So, pony up, people. The next major fundraiser is a big one, at Congress Hall on November 6. For those who regularly scan these pages, along with our Facebook page, you will know I am now a married man, courtesy of a whirlwind, ridiculously romantic wedding in my native Scotland the other week. But I figured it couldn’t really be official until it appeared in this column. So, there you have it — I look forward to a long and happy life with the wonderful woman formerly known as Diane Stopyra .

by Jerry Inderwies, Jr, Bea Pessagno, Charlie Hendricks and John Van de Vaarst. I will be talking more about these folks after the debate on Thursday. I hope to see you there — don’t be complaining about your local elected officials if you can’t be bothered getting up off your sofa to go see them speak their mind. The Candidates’ Night, which will be moderated by the League of Women Voters and organized by the Taxpayers Association of Cape May, will run from 6:30pm — doors open at 5:45. The Lower Township Candidates’ Night will be held the previous night, but I don’t have the space to get into

Letter To The Editor

his past spring I was surprised to read of the retirement of Cape May’s Chief of Police followed shortly thereafter by the Fire Chief. Absent from both announcements was reference to each obtaining other employment. It was therefore implicit in both cases that their retirement entitlements were commencing immediately and providing full, unreduced benefits of a more than adequate lifetime income. Other than in circumstances of disability, ending one’s earning producing employment at the respective ages of 50 and 45 is nearly unheard of in the private sector. In the public sector such lucrative entitlements may be more prevalent as the governing bodies sock the extraordinary cost of the benefits to the unknowing taxpayers. The majority of taxpayers, who fund the salaries and benefits of the municipal employees through taxes, work for and retire from private industries and businesses where benefits and retirement entitlements are not so lucrative. Under standard retirement plans, commencing retirement benefits at age 45 or 50 is nearly unheard, of as is full entitlement. Generally, retirement benefits are discounted if commencing prior to the plan’s normal retirement date, say 65. This is to account for the presumed longer period of payout. Also, it is not uncommon to discount the benefit in order to provide survival spousal protection. Being unfamiliar with the Cape May municipal retirement program I wrote to Mayor Mahaney, over two months ago, raising questions in order to understand the program. No response from him has been received and it would appear none is forthcoming. The lack of response, to me, implies the issues raised may be an embarrassment to present and past city governing bodies and a potential eye-opener to taxpayers who may

unknowingly be funding such potentially lucrative salaries and benefits for municipal employees. I now ask the Mayor to respond publicly to the following questions. 1. Did the two individuals immediately commence their retirement benefits? 2. Was the retirement benefit based on pensionable earnings of base salary only? or was OT and/or bonus included? 3. What is the definition of pensionable earnings? 4. In each case what was the pensionable earnings used to determine the benefit? 5. In each case what is the annual pension payable for lifetime? 6. In the event the individual is survived by a spouse/partner is the same or lesser benefit continued for that person’s lifetime? 7. Does the employee contribute to the retirement program? 8. Is the retirement income subject to future COL, or other similar index increases? If so, what is the frequency? 9. Was the retirement income of these individuals fully funded at time of retirement or is it to be funded over the next 40-50 years of the potential lifetime of the retiree and/or surviving spouse/partner? 10. Assuming healthcare is provided to the retiree and family, does the retiree contribute ? What dollar amount or percentage of the cost is paid by the retiree? 11. Is life insurance provided? How much insurance and what is the retiree cost? 12. Do the Mayor and Council members participate in the City’s retirement, healthcare and life insurance programs? What is their contribution to each and are the latter two programs provided for their lifetime? In conclusion I feel the City’s governing body has a fiduciary responsibility for its expenditures and to the taxpayers, as well as openness to the taxpayers. — Arthur H. Horner, Westfield, NJ and Cape May

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do adore All Hallows Eve. Of course, the event has become rather toothless and not really scary at all, in recent decades, but still, it is the celebration I look forward to most in the whole year (well, that and Samhain, where we burn a randomly selected visitor in a giant basket to ensure the sun comes up on January 1. Also, I have a soft spot for Guy Fawkes Night, the English holiday celebrating the failed attempt to blow up parliament. I cheer for Fawkes, of course, but still, any excuse to let off 300lbs of gunpowder is good for me. Now I think about it, I also like celebrating VE Day, when I wear a few hundred of my best medals and parade around Cape May in a convoy of Jeeps — the original ones, not those infantile monstrosities — with other veterans, demanding people tell us how splendid we are, over and over again). This year, we will as usual open the doors to the D’Catur Mansion, and post the “Enter At Your Owne Peril” signs, with (at the insistence of our lawyers) a lengthy footnote declaring that injury, both mental and

physical, will likely result from entering, and that we are not liable except for offering free pants-washing for minors who are overcome with fear and wee themselves. I will be dressed as Tattie Bogle, the fearsome Celtic scarecrow, while Young Albert will be The Hound of the Baskervilles and my faithful manservant Kitchener will be The Headless Horseman. We will offer treats: an irresistible mix of the best candy money can buy, chocolate coated truffles, candied hallucinogenic mushrooms, sugared laxatives and fried

eyeballs. And, for those who dare, a tour of the Mansion’s fabled basement, where those with stout hearts can gaze on such gruesome wonders as Hitler’s head (pickled), a realreanimated zombie (caged), a glass bell-jar full of ghosts and Cape May’s own version of The Human Centipede: the Human Conga Line! The latter is not really surgical, it’s just a dozen drunk locals with their hands on the person in front’s hips, dancing. But that is in its own way awful to witness. What will sadly be missing are the famous Exploding Pumpkins: I have never laughed so much as the year we had a thousand of them dotted around the grounds, each wired to a central timer and contining a ounce of explosives. Sadly, our imported French Pyrotechnician works in metric and so stuffed each with a kilo. He himself did not survive the mayhem, having sat down too close to the largest pumpkin, but I like to think he would have approved of 20,000lbs of juice (with tiny pieces of Frenchman mixed in) raining down on the city in an aromatic mist.

2014 Program: The Pursuit of Happiness

T

HE third annual TEDxCapeMay will be held this Sunday, October 19 at Cape May Convention Hall. So, what IS a TEDx event? In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx where local, self-organized events can bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx events. TEDxCapeMay seeks to develop and leverage the TED experience at a regional level, bringing together innovators and inspirational speakers in the Cape May area.

Mary Catherine Bateson Victoria Kindred Keziah New World of Active Wisdom Happy By Nature

Gabriel Barcia-Colombo Slow Down

Dr Bateson, a writer and cultural anthropologist who has lectured and taught extensively both in the US and abroad, believes that the contributions of active wisdom from seniors may well save the world. She wrote a book titled Composing a Further Life: The Age of Active Wisdom, published by Knopf in September, 2010, on the contributions and improvisations of engaged older adults. The book was written to raise consciousness of the changing life cycle and to encourage older adults to claim a voice for the future.

Victoria brings a suite of bio-inspired principles for stakeholders in the emerging economy who strive to manage multiple forms of well-being, not only for people and profit, but for place and planet. Recognizing that the ecology and economy of the Jersey Shore are interconnected and interdependent, Victoria will explain why this is an idea worth spreading. Victoria merges a 20-year career in brand strategy (clients have included Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and General Motors) with her passion for a regenerative, resilient, reimagined economy.

The concept of slowing down in the face of technology that moves us ever faster is illustrated by this artist’s upcoming largescale digital art installation at a new public space in New York City. Gabriel’s work focuses on memorialization and the act of leaving one’s imprint for the next generation. While making conspicuous references to Marcel Duchamps’ Ready-Mades, Gabriel also draws from an eclectic range of other influences, from the combines of Robert Rauschenberg and the video spectacles of Aernout Mik to taxonomy texts and anatomical drawings.

Burns Strider The Happy Community

Judith Coche The Power of Love

Marti Wolfson Intuition in the Kitchen

Burns ponders the “happy community” based on years of engagement in political, social and cultural issues to illuminate the origins and development of those virtues and values that can draw us closer to an enlightened, happy community. He is the founder and principal of Eleison Group, committed to creating common ground between the political, business and nonprofit worlds with America’s values-based communities. In 2008, he served as Senior Advisor and Director of Faith and Values Outreach to Hillary Clinton.

Based on research in Positive Psychology and Psychotherapy, Dr Coche tells us that the greatest human need is to love — ad that skillful loving creates the foundation for happiness. With 35-plus years of clinical practice at Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia and in Cape May County, she was widowed young, and has been married more than 45 years to two good men. Her work is internationally known and has been highlighted in the New York Times and The Today Show. She is the author of Your Best Life: Pathways to Happiness.

Marti believes that the kitchen is the gateway to a healthy and happier body and mind. By tapping into our “intuitive cook” the inner healer can emerge. Her extensive background working with chronic diseases has shaped her approach of using simple healthy cooking techniques, nutritional science and mindful living tools to guide people toward better health. She is the co-author of BlumKitchen Nutrition Guide and Cookbook, and wrote 40 recipes for The Immune System Recovery Plan: A Doctor’s 4Step Program to Treating Autoimmune Disease.

Jana Herzen The Rhythms of Life Playing music — and living life — are a lot like surfing. The trick is to learn to expertly ride the rhythms and flows of life, improvising as we go, then enjoying the happiness of pursuit which includes the ups, the downs and even the wipeouts. Performer, entrepreneur and lifeadventurer, Jana Herzen is Founder and President of Motéma Music, a multi-genre, multi-Grammy nominated Harlem record label recently cited by All About Jazz as “One of the most important jazz labels to plant its flag in the 21st century.”

Dr Mario Merialdi Surrounded by Happiness at Birth

Dr Merialdi considers happiness in childbirth and finds that great and unexpected things can happen when happy people surround us. In this case, it is the innovative Odon device, invented by a car mechanic, that has the potential to reduce maternal and newborn mortality due to complications during childbirth, especially in developing countries. In Lima, Peru, Dr Merialdi led a research team studying the role of nutrition in maternal and newborn health among disadvantaged populations.

Adrian Fisher The Future of Mazes and Amusements

Adrian is renowned as the world’s leading maze designer who looks to the future of amusements as more of a social experience, comprised of shared choices and rich content. Over the past 35 years Adrian has created over 600 mazes in more than 30 countries, setting six world records and winning two gold medals for garden design in the process. His designs can be seen at the world’s finest historic buildings and private gardens. He has also created rides and puzzles for iconic visitor attractions across the globe.

Giulia Rozzi Healing Loneliness with Laughter

Comedy is more than the punchline — it’s the connection the comic has with the audience. By opening up, we reveal our most vulnerable, genuine selves. We find the most brilliant humor and find comfort that our thoughts are more universal than we imagined. This connection, can help make us happier, says Giulia, a comedian, actress and writer who has appeared on Chelsea Lately, VH1, Playboy TV, MTV, CNN, and has written for MTV’s Girl Code and Silent Library, and for national magazines.

Page 53

Will Flosdorf and Tristan Sachar High School Happiness

In partnership with Lower Cape May Regional High School, TEDxCapeMay features presenters who have been nominated by the school as having an “idea worth spreading.” Will and Tristan have been making films and loving life here in Cape May County throughout their high school experience. Tristan is pursuing multimedia and Will is pursuing entrepreneurship and film. Both have also started and maintained their own local businesses.

Howard Friend The Un-Pursuit of Happiness The Reverend Howard Friend asks whether happiness itself should be pursued, and finds happiness as the unanticipated, even surprising outcome of other decisions of attitude and behavior. Howard is a Presbyterian minister, organizational consultant, spiritual mentor who has served two churches fulltime for nearly 30 years. He is founder and lead consultant of the Parish Empowerment Network through which he has led workshops and retreats for around 150 congregations and non-profit organizations in 35 states and five countries.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, all things witchy and Halloweenish

itch’s brews have a bad reputation, but the witches of the past — often called cunning folk or healers — created their concoctions for good. They were artisans who studied Nature to brew up treatments for disease. The creepy names for ingredients, like eye of newt, toe of frog and wool of bat, were just alternate names for herbs like mustard seed, buttercup and holly. Scary names likely discouraged amateurs from playing with magic, cutting down on both accidents and competition. Witchcraft was declared a heresy in 1326, but witches didn’t gain their sinister reputation until 1486, when the inquisitors of Pope Innocent VIII wrote the Malleus Mallificarum (The Hammer of Witches), which held that witches were Satanists who could control everything from plague to the weather. Christians, therefore, had a duty to hunt and kill them. In spite of this, practitioners of the healing arts remained. Being a witch could be financially rewarding. Then, as now, people were willing to pay for health.

Often, the healer also provided more mundane brews, like beer and tea. Beer has been credited with medicinal powers. A cup of wheat beer may relieve nightmares, and a cup added to bathwater purifies the skin. Ginger beer — or tea — treats nausea. Chamomile tea alleviates congestion if you breathe it in, body aches if you drink it, and rashes if you apply it to the skin. Modern Wiccans hark back to these traditions with charm bags, which may include peppermint, cinnamon, lemon verbena, barley and hops — ingredients which may have medicinal powers, but

also make delicious tea or beer. Witch-ever brew you prefer, Cape May has a Halloween event for you. MAC presents Madame Parmentier’s Psychic Tea at the Carriage House Cafe featuring “fortunetellers, palm readers or the odd phrenologist” in addition to a tasty meal. Tickets are $25 and reservations are necessary — call 8845404. Cape May Brewery, purveyors of beers like Devil’s Reach and Pumpkin, Pumpkin will sponsor the Great Pumpkin Carve this Saturday, October 18 from 4-9pm at the Town Bank Oktoberfest. Visitors will vote, and winners will be announced Saturday. Cabanas on the Beach makes Halloween last all month long with a scavenger hunt. Clues to the locations of 10 hidden pumpkins are being posted on their Facebook page. Successful pumpkin seekers will be entered into a raffle, drawn at their Halloween Costume Party on November 1. Or, put on your witch costume and trick or treat, either on Sunday, October 19, on the Washington Street Mall noon to 2pm, or at the Physick Estate on October 31, from 5-7pm.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My son is 10 years old and recently I found him being bullied by a boy two years older — I interceded. My son was furious with me and things have not been the same since. Worse, the bully has taken to calling him a Momma’s Boy. How do I fix this? — Bullied Dear Bullied When it comes to boys, 10-12 years old is right about the time when mothers need to realize that their sons are on the cusp of becoming men and they need to back away. This is very hard and the Answer Lady sympathizes, but it must be done in order for the boy to grow into a responsible man. That said, all children really need to learn to solve their social problems themselves, but with good counsel from their parents. I would

advise two things — bringing in the child’s father, uncle or family friend to assist you in steering him back on course. Secondly, go to Cape Atlantic Books and have them order Iron John: A Book About Men by Robert Bly. It will help you to help him. Good Luck. Dear Answer Lady I’m very upset with my daughter-in-law. I host our family dinner every Thanksgiving, but I recently had a heart attack and cannot do it this year. I asked my daughter-in-law

to host and she has refused. What am I to do? It is the joy of my life to cook for my family and to be at home with them. I know it is a bit early to be worrying about this, but it is keeping me up at nights. — Sleepless in Cape May Dear Sleepless in Cape May Although it IS a bit cheeky of your daughter-in-law to refuse, it is also the most daunting task in the universe to cook Thanksgiving dinner and, if she is not domestically inclined, probably brought her to the brink of sleeplessness as well. Also, keep in mind that the main point of Thanksgiving is to gather together and give thanks. That said, you can either make reservations at, say, the Merion Inn, which is very homey and welcoming or Aleathea’s, which goes out of its way to serve the bird the old-fashioned way — carved at your table. If being in your own home is a top priority, then pick up the phone and call the Depot Market Café. They will make you a Thanksgiving meal complete with Mr Tom Turkey and all the fixins, plus dessert wrapped and packaged to go. Either way, you can have a pleasant time, free of angst.

A LETTER TO CAPE MAY STAGE... I am writing on behalf of four of us who have been coming to Cape May Point for years every fall to watch the hawk migration that occurs here. We are from Michigan and Ohio respectively. Also every year, we attend at least one of your theatre’s productions. We are theatre buffs, and attend live theatre in the Detroit and Cincinnati areas as often as we can. This year, my wife and I planned our arrival so we could see the last staging of Blithe Spirit, and the four of us saw Other Desert Cities this past Saturday. Blithe Spirit was a rollicking good time. It is hard to pull off good comedy sometimes, and your cast and crew DID! What fun! Clever set design, too. However, it is Cities that has prompted this email. Will you please convey to your cast and crew at least this one-word review from us. “WOW! “ We were blown away. We have friends from Michigan who will arrive this Thursday. I contacted them and basically told them that they MUST see this play, and they are. I bought their tickets yesterday. Certainly it is, first and foremost, well-written, but the cast was outstanding, and deserved more than two curtain calls. Our Saturday night audience would have been willing to give them more. Everyone exiting could not stop exclaiming. I heard nothing but accolades from patrons as we exited and gathered in small clusters outside of the theatre. Kudos to everyone involved. What an ensemble of fine actors. Please tell them so. I have been “spreading the word” to all of our acquaintances on the hawk-watching platform at the state park. There is quite a large number of folks who come to Cape May Point State Park every fall to observe hawk migration, so over the years we all have come to know each other, and socialize for a period of approximately four weeks. I hope that we will be able to send some more attendees your way. We look forward to to future fall productions in the ensuing years. Sincerely,

Michael Fitzpatrick Mt. Clemens, Michigan

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

SOPHIE is at the shelter because her dad, whom she lived with for eight years, has fallen ill. She’s not into other dogs, but man, is she affectionate towards humans. You’ll be able to tell this right away, because she’s likely to fall in love with you ASAP. She may be older but make no mistake, she still has alot of spunk left in me.

«

HEIDI is a sweet girl who loves to play, and she is great with kids, cats, and other dogs. She can be a little nervous in new situations but once she gets used to what’s going on she relaxes and has fun... or enjoys a good snuggle. So if you’re in need of a friend — or a cuddle buddy — stop by the shelter and say hello.

«

CUJO may just be the world’s best dog, and we’re not big on exaggeration here, so you know we mean it. He’s a senior, so he’s free to a senior home, but he’d be an awesome addition to a young person’s house as well. He’s super well-behaved and full of love for other cats and dogs (but no kids). He had the same owner for 10 years.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

MADONNA came in with her sister Marilyn, who was adopted by folks who didn’t want to take a tiger cat as well. Can you believe that? We mean... she’s so pretty! So now Madonna is in a cage with another tiger left behind. They are buddies but she feels a bit sad. You can help cheer her up... all it takes is a heart.

«

BEBE (above) and CECE (equally adorable) are two sweet, friendly little girls. They are sisters who love each other very much and would like to go to a forever home together so they can keep playing. If you are interested, please head down to the shelter to meet them. And if you’re not interested... what’s wrong with you?

«

KIRA had a family once but they had to surrender her to the shelter because of a move. She misses being part of a family, and is so ready to be a purrfect pet in a new home. Kira is guaranteed to: sit in your lap, sleep in your bed, and love you. No really — she loves meeting new people. Adopt her and your heart will grow three sizes.
