Ramblings From The Editor

D

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

oing anything this weekend? Fancy seeing world-class musicians without having to trek to Philly? Or to Atlantic City, where you can always see performers who are 30-40 years past their prime and whose last hit came from a plastic surgeon’s scalpel? Sorry, Atlantic City... cheap shot, I know. But hey, you used to take cheap shots at Cape May all the time in the 1870s when you were trying to replace it as the country’s most popular seaside resort. Sorry, I’ve read way too many local newspapers from the Victorian Era... it’s a hard habit to break. And, actually, it’s been essential recently — I just completed the second edition of Tommy’s Folly, a history book about Congress Hall which first published in 2003. I’m mentioning it because: 1. It’s a beautiful book of which I’m very proud; 2. I want to give Ben Miller a humungous shout-out for doing some spectacular research for the book. (Ben reads lots of Victorian Era newspapers, too. And seriously, you should see the mud that used to be slung at Cape May by Atlantic City newspapers. Serious bitchfest that was.)

On another side note (I’m worse than the Old Fogey this week)... Tommy’s Folly is the reason I stayed in Cape May. So, without Tommy’s Folly there would be no Exit Zero. Impossible to imagine, right? So, yes... this weekend it’s Exit Zero Jazz Festival. This is how you will have an opportunity to listen to some fabulous music. And if, perchance, you are no hardcore lover of jazz, relax. Buy a Pop’s Pass for $50 and you’ll be able to enjoy a dozen varied musicians play

over the weekend at Cabanas, Carney’s and Iron Pier Craft House, which is the new name for the bar/restaurant above Cabanas — most of you will know it as the old Martini Beach. The name Iron Pier comes from the huge pier that used to extend 1,000 feet into the ocean at Decatur Street. It’s a great name for a restaurant. Wonder which genius came up with that... Because I’m no hardcore jazz fan, I’m most excited to see the High and Mighty Brass Band play Carney’s on Saturday and Brother Joscephus at Cabanas on Sunday. Both should provide energetic, borderline raucous performances. The festival headliners are two jazz greats, Pat Metheny (who has won 20 Grammys) and Ron Carter (the most-recorded jazz musician of all time, and a one-time member of the Miles Davis Quintet). You can see them at the Paul Schmidtchen Theater at Lower Cape May Regional on Saturday. On Friday, Lisa Fischer is at the Schmidtchen. She’s a super-talented performer who has sung with Tina Turner and the Rolling Stones.

Page 14 Another highlight will be the remarkable Joey Alexander, who is playing Cape May Convention Hall on Friday. Joey is a brilliant young pianist. How young? Oh, he’s 12. He was recently featured on 60 Minutes. Go see him. For more information on tickets, call Michael Kline at the jazz festival on 609-849-9202. He’ll gladly give you all the info and advice you need. You can also visit exit0jazzfest.com. Or just come to the Exit Zero Global HQ on Sunset Boulevard — we can sell you an official ticket with our fancy new printer right here! I want to give another shoutout to the George Mesterhazy Tribute Concert, held as part of Cape May Music Festival on Sunday, June 12 at Convention Hall. Here’s my advice: When you buy your $25 ticket from the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, tell them you want to be one of George’s Angels. Why? Because then you will be invited to the concert rehearsal/ brunch and after-party, both at the Merion Inn on that day. That’s some pretty amazing value right there. For $25 you get to watch George’s many talented friends play a tribute to him, and you get to soak up the cool vibe, and eat the good food, at the Merion, one of the city’s most beloved bars and restaurants. For tickets, call MAC at 609884-5404. PS: If you really want to see performers 30-40 years past their prime, WITHOUT traveling to Atlantic City, you will have plenty of chances this summer, thanks to Cape May’s concert series, which I’m pretty certain is inspired by Mayor Ed Mahaney’s dust-covered collection of records from the 1960s. Among the treats this summer are Chubby Checker, Rita Coolidge and The Spinners. For information on those concerts, check out ye olde website at discovercapemaynj.com. See you at jazzfest!

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

amn you all to hell! No, no, not you, my dear friends and readers, I was talking to Kitchener, my faithful manservant: it’s Movie Night in the D’Catur Mansion, and as always there is a robust discussion as to which VHS tape we dust off and feed into the modern Video Player that I was pressured into buying in 1978, despite my opposition to new technology. Anyway, we all assemble in front of the Televisual — myself, Kitchener, Young Albert, the burly Scotch editor of this fine rag, and whichever persons and relatives happen to be in town, and shout for a solid hour until wisdom prevails. I was, of course, quoting from Planet of the Apes, the ending of which catches me totally and devastatingly by surprise every single time, and has played a major part in my mistrust of chimpanzees. Kitchener tends to favor The Admirable Crichton, a tale of a shipwrecked family who come to depend on and be lorded over by their former servant, the viewing of which is, he thinks, a joke at my expense. Albert

is most fond of Lassie Come Home, which I assumed he was emotionally attached to but upon reflection I have the horrid fear he regards as titillating (he is a crude little chap and it does not do to overestimate him). The Scotch newspaper man can never be allowed to triumph, as he chooses It’s a Wonderful Life and no one can hear the movie for his alternate raging, crying and laughing (sometimes all at once). Once in a while, when there is no consensus, and violence threatens, we select a title from the Video Librarium on a whim: we have 10,000 films which take up the

floor-to-ceiling cases made for them. So, one night, hoarse from shouting and malt, I spied what I thought was Exit Zero on the spine, and assumed it was a work about our fine city. In the event it turned out to be World War Z, which was, unless I am mistaken, a documentary about and set in Wildwood. Whatever, an hour of undead monsters and horror was too much to bear and I set about the machine with my silvertopped walking cane. From then on (after a pause of a few weeks to replace the machine), we have chosen from a curated list, that contains none of the following: chimpanzees (unless cast as villains), clowns (unless serial killers who meet an ironic end), Irishmen (John Wayne in The Quiet Man excepted), Jim Carrey, and Westerns that are not of the spaghetti variety: We do adore The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and more than once have re-enacted the climactic gunfight, but since everyone wants to be Clint Eastwood, except Young Albert, who plays Eli Wallach with vicious glee, it gets messy.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

his is my tribute to a grand lady and champion of the environment. Ruth Fisher, Cape May’s most ardent and tireless environmentalist, died recently at the age of 86. Her passing will not be mourned by those whose interests put them at odds with the preservation of Cape May’s natural dowry. This would please Ruth mightily. For five decades, Ruth was the voice of the voiceless denizens of the natural who world otherwise have been disenfranchised by our decision-making process. Her heart was always in the right place and she made it her duty to keep her finger on the pulse of Cape May as it moved from geographic obscurity to the place everyone wants to visit. We will never know how many earth-unfriendly initiatives were never moved forward because everybody in local government knew that Cape May’s indomitable environmental hellcat was ever poised to pounce. Ruth and I did not always see eye to eye — there were issues she was passionate about that were outside the scope of New Jersey

Audubon’s conservation focus and I would explain, once again, that our positions and actions are science-based. But before there was a permanent New Jersey Audubon presence in Cape May, there was Ruth Fisher and her band of earthfriendly advocates who recognized the global significance of this place and that a quick or gradual diminishment of the peninsula’s natural dowery would undermine the very reason people want to live and vacation here. In a very real way, what Ruth Fisher was

fighting for was our quality of life and tourist economy. Those of us who knew her admired her courage and conviction and I shudder to think what the Cape might look like today if not for her staunch advocacy in favor of open space and a non-toxic environment. Ruth drew energy and conviction from the environment around her, but it was her heroic and catalytic book Silent Spring that gave her focus and determination, prompting her to search for alternatives to using manmade chemical agents to control insects and unwanted plants. It was primarily Ruth’s position on the subject of herbicides that found me hand-pulling weeds from Cape May Bird Observatory’s gravel lot. The task has now been assumed by CMBO Associate Naturalist, Pat Perkins, who is no less dedicated to minimizing our human imprint than was Ruth. Thank you, Pat, And thank you, Ruth. There are many like-spirited, earth-friendly residents of Cape May and while they may not all make headlines as often as Ruth, they do, in their convictions and daily actions, make a difference.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady A friend recently showed me a YouTube video of a performance of mine done 30 years ago in a play called Let My People Come, in which I am part of the nude chorus. I’d completely forgotten that I was even in it and I’m wondering now if I should tell my daughter and granddaughter or just let it go. I’m not ashamed of it, but it is a teeny bit awkward. What do you think? — Exposed Dear Exposed The Answer Lady has the perfect answer. This calls for Sunday brunch at Harbor View restaurant. First, alcohol. Order a couple of mimosas for you and your daughter and a Shirley Temple for your granddaughter. Then, perhaps something like, “Did you know I was a performer back in the day?” Tell them of your

Wise answers to perplexing questions

other roles (we presume you had a few). Then whip out the smartphone. Ask them if they recognize the girl in the chorus. Celebrate it, as well you should. Tell them how your life is so full, you forgot you even did this, but you want them to know about it now. Dear Answer Lady I have been taking care of my mother, who has Alzheimer’s, for four years. I live in Philadelphia and commute to Cape May Friday through Sunday. Lately, I feel the stress is at the breaking point. Last weekend I had

a dinner I had to attend in Philadelphia and asked my sister, who lives ONE MILE away, to take over for this one weekend. She called me Sunday morning telling me I had to come back because she was too ill to go over and check on the health care workers. This happens on a regular basis with her and I went ballistic. Now we are not speaking. I feel badly, but my own mental health is now at risk. — Losing It Dear Losing It Clearly, you are better able to cope with the situation than your sister, but that places an unfair burden on you. Perhaps you encourage this behavior with your sister. Try baby steps. Ask your sister to watch her for a few hours while you go shopping or while you are en route to Cape May, so she can feel she has been useful, but is not weighed down by the prospect. Gradually, increase the time she spends with your mother. Meanwhile, make taking care of YOU your top priority. Pop into Splash and buy yourself something beautiful and extravagant, something that brings you joy when you look at it and reminds you that you are a special person.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

W

hen I say the name Gavin Hood, what is your reaction? Are you puzzled, apathetic, or do you say, “Oh, yeah didn’t he play for the Phillies back in the day?” Well… no… no he did not. Gavin Hood is a director, but his list of accomplishments is relatively short. He has only 11 films accredited to his name in nearly 20 years — and one of them was badly beaten up by critics. In 2009, he was given the chance to present one of his first major films, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and it was certainly not the highlight of his career. The highlight of his career (thus far) was the Oscar he won for his film Tsotsi (pronounced “sotsee” and released in 2005). This is one of my favorite films. It is both personal and touching as well as a gripping suspense and social commentary. The film society screened Tsotsi a few years back at Cape May Stage. Well, Gavin Hood has returned. His last film was three years ago with Ender’s Game (a marginal success). This time, Hood is in great

Helen Mirren in the excellent Eye in the Sky form and the film, Eye in the Sky, is getting high praise from critics and audiences alike. The movie stars Helen Mirren as a British military colonel charged with finding and capturing (not killing) three suicide bombers in war-torn Kenya. Through an international effort that includes the operation of high-tech surveillance devices capturing clear pictures from 50,000 feet up (thus the title of the movie), she has three high-ranking terrorists in plain view. She is prepared to capture, until

she sees them slowly and methodically putting on suicide vests complete with explosives that could kill dozens of innocent people… that is, if they’re permitted to leave the hideout they’re in. She now wants to destroy the compound. The problem with blowing up the terrorists is simple. A little girl appears from a nearby home and sets up a table to sell her family’s bread right outside building where the terrorists prepare for their attack. The tension is palatable as the military leaders and government dignitaries view developments play out on video. One of those viewing is Mirren’s boss, a general played by Alan Rickman. This would be Rickman’s last onscreen role (he voices characters in upcoming films but does not physically appear). The film is dedicated to Rickman and is a fitting end to a stellar career. Hood’s name appeared on end credits, and I said, “Wait, I know that name. Did he play for the Phillies? No, no!” Now he’s on my watch list. Let’s see what else comes from this new master of suspense.
