Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
aw an interesting post on the Cool Cape May Facebook page by local realtor Jim McBride, who asked if we should be extending the Cape May promenade all the way east to Wilmington. “Maybe some bike lanes, running lanes,” wrote Jim. Not surprisingly, the comments were divided. There were those who think we shouldn’t change anything about America’s Original Seaside Resort and that we definitely shouldn’t be encouraging more commerce on the promenade. Then there were those who would love to see more facilities for visitors and locals. And, naturally, there were those who feared that such a development would encourage even more parking meters. Me? I think it’s a great idea, though I agree that commercial development should not be allowed. The current promenade is 1.4 miles long (though it seems so much longer every time I run the length of it, which has happened... twice in my life). Extending it would enable people to stroll, power-walk (thinking of you, Viviane Rowan) or jog, while taking in an expanded

new (and hopefully re-invigorated) city council can discuss after the November election. Every Thursday is when one of my favorite Cape May events happens — Movies on the Beach. Tonight (July 24), the wonderful Gremlins is showing. The following week it’s Goonies and then, on August 7, one of the greatest movies of all time, Jaws. I will never forget looking over the beach last year when that Spielberg classic played — there were around 1,000 people laid out watching the movie, under the light of the moon (at least, I like to think there was a beautiful, silvery moon that night — artistic license). A memorable sight. I should mention that it wasn’t only Jeannie Monge (owner of Bella Vida) who turned 60 recently. Her husband (and co-0wner) Chris also reached that landmark — the difference is that his photo (and age) weren’t splashed all over the pages of Exit Zero. And Chris, you look pretty damn good for your age, too. Until next time... enjoy the last week of July in this beautiful place.

panoramic view of the beach and ocean. I would love to see biking access, too, but it’s tricky with our relatively narrow promenade. The Wildwoods Boardwalk Special Improvement District did a great job with their six-mile bike-and-pedestrian path, completed in 2012, but we just don’t have the width for such a project. Anyone who’s walked over the Brooklyn Bridge will know how tense the pedestrian-cyclist vibe can get when the place gets busy. But maybe there’s a compromise. Either way, great question, Jim McBride. Maybe this is one of the subjects that the

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

Our roving photographer bumped into Cindy and Scott Stoner from Harrisburg, PA while they were waiting for the police to come unlock their bikes. To sweeten the deal, we gave them a $25 gift certificate to spend at The Original Fudge Kitchen. How often do you come in Cape May? We come here to camp every year. What is the situation here? Nothing to worry about. Our locks got stuck so we are waiting for a lock cutter. The police will assist us with that. What do you do for a living? Scott is a retired technology teacher and I’m a para professional, meaning I’m an assistant teacher at a high school for learning support students. What do you plan to do here for fun here in Cape May? Well, we have bikes so we’re gonna bike around the town, shop on Washimgton Street Mall and take our dog to Sunset Beach. What kind of dog do you have? We have a 14-year-old beagle — he’s been camping with us all his life. What’s your favorite type of fudge? Peanut butter. Have you seen any ghosts in Cape May? I don’t believe in them. Do you have a message for our readers? We love Cape May, it’s a beautiful place... enjoy it. The winner of our next giveaway will get a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
remember Cape May’s first tattoo artist. Polynesian Willy. He washed ashore one day at The Point, along with a goodly amount of planks and rigging and a colossal bear. He was naked as a baby (Robert, not the bear. The bear had on a small red embroidered waistcoat and a fez, secured by a strap under his chin) save for a small oiled leather pouch of tattoo equipment. He was tattooed from head to toe (again, I refer to Robert: it may be that the bear was also tattoed, but no one was inclined to check under his fur, as he was both soaking wet and wild, though no literally wild bear would have worn a fez with such panache) with a landscape of volcanoes, jungle and parrots. “I am,” the bedraggled castaway muttered, “Robert, but you can and should only call me Polynesian Willy. And this...” he gestured to the surly bear, “is Robespierre”. Not a word more would he say about how he came to be shipwrecked on our island, or in the company of a monstrous bear. He immediately set up shop on the beach, to which a steady stream of young lads and some lasses
arrived to be decorated with some pain, some blood and blinking away of tears. He did not really take commissions, did Polynesian Willy, so much as shush his clients with an upraised finger when they dared to suggest what they would like to have as a tattoo, then he would circle them, humming, deep in concentration, before declaring “Aha!” and setting to work. One did not know, when one visited Willy, whether one would step out 10 minutes later with a tiny irridescent glittering hummingbird on one’s
ear, or stagger away the next morning with a detailed map of the location of the fabled El Dorado from one’s knee to neck (the first of those happened to a local tough, O’Flaherty, who never quite got over it, and the second to an unassuming visiting bookkeeper, Mr Pigglesworth, who had just paused to ask for directions). I myself went in and said not a word, and was fortunate enough to receive a lovely rendering of a Spanish Galleon in a storm, across my stomach and loins. I do think the placement of the dangling anchor is a touch unfortunate, but it does lend to some very droll visual humor, in the right circumstances. In the end, Polynesian Willy ran off with a visiting troupe of ladyboys from Thailand, and we heard not a thing more from him. As for Robespierre, he ran a successful and surprising barber’s shop in town for many’s a year, before disappearing one day on a tiny tricycle, his fez at a jaunty angle. We assume he ended up in Wildwood and had a large family, given the ursine look of many of that place’s natives, to this very day.

ow that our collective World Cup fever has broken, remember that summer time is baseball time, and in Cape May, baseball means wiffleball. Although it owes a big debt to the British game of rounders, baseball has been America’s game since the nineteenth century. Its invention has been erroneously credited to General Abner Doubleday, but baseball as we play it likely evolved as a pickup game played by children. In 1828, 11 years before Doubleday was alleged to have created the game, author Mary Russell Mitford described a young girl sneaking away from her chores to play, “her longing eyes fixed on a game of baseball at the corner of the green.” The New York Knickerbockers, a social club founded in 1845, laid out some of the rules we recognize, including nine-man teams, nine-inning games and bases 90 feet apart. The National Association of Base Ball Players was founded in 1857 and membership grew to 400 clubs by 1867, after the mingling of Civil War soldiers from across
the country helped to standardize the rules. Professional leagues soon followed. Children still drive most pickup baseball games, but it requires a lot of space, and mistakes can be costly in terms of windows broken and gardens trampled. Wiffleball, invented in 1953, helps to address these concerns. It’s easy to throw and hard to hit, and it doesn’t fly very far, making it suitable for small spaces. You can play a wiffleball game with as few as two players, and you don’t need much equipment — even a bat is optional, as a broomstick works just as

well. You can run the bases, or not, as you choose. There are official wiffleball rules, and even a beach wiffleball association, but you can play any way you like. Casual Cape May wiffleball players are ready to be flexible. There may be a pause when a toddler approaches the pitcher to show off a pretty seashell, or because the third baseman needs to reapply sunscreen. The whole game may be put on a hold because the dolphins are swimming by, or because the waves are perfect for body surfing. Wind is a major factor, and sometimes you just need a giggle break. If you’re playing wiffleball on the beach, pay attention to your surroundings. Don’t set the field up across a beach entrance, and be prepared to stop play when someone strolls through the infield. Consider inviting the envious tween boy hovering nearby to join your game, with his parents’ permission — you could use an extra outfielder. And don’t play as if the pennant is on the line. You all have to be healthy enough for work on Monday.

Two must-have books This story of a young sailor shipwrecked off the coast of Cape May was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s. But after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now this remarkable story can finally be enjoyed.

By Tom Sims, Executive Director, Cape May Film Festival
re you a Disney fan? No, I mean are you really a Disney fan? Do you have the Disney bumper sticker on your car? Own all the DVDs? Confession: I’m not a Disney fan. Okay, I can gush about Disney Pixar’s Toy Story — Hollywood’s perfect trilogy. Ahem. Sorry. By that time I was about six, the Disney classics were already out of theaters. I’d catch them on television (Sunday nights, The Wonderful World of Disney). None of them impressed me so much. But of all the films that impressed me the least, Sleeping Beauty (1959) was among the most unimpressive. What was the point? She’s a princess who’s asleep. Sheesh what’s the big deal? Prince kisses her, she wakes up. Witch turns into a dragon? Wait — what’s that all about? Somebody has to tell what the appeal is. Well that someone is my daughter, Julia, who is now 17. She’s always been a Disney fan. No, a Disney aficionado. No I shouldn’t say it but… a Disney freak. And Sleeping
Angelina Jolie as Maleficient Beauty is one of her absolute favorites. When Angelina Jolie was to appear as the villain from Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, she just had to see it. And now that she’s working, maybe she could even pay her own way. “Um, I’m kind of broke,” she said, “I had to get these must-have pajamas I saw online.” I told her my treat… again… Then I thought, ‘Well this should be good — the guy who could care less about the original and the one who was enthralled by it.’ The story was all the background you

never got in the original story, so says my daughter. The story did not at all try to line up with the animated film — quite the opposite; it made liberal departures from it. Its goal was to try to make Maleficent more beloved, and like the premise of the Broadway hit Wicked try to make you see how a good character could become so mean. It didn’t matter to me how much this film departed from the original, and strangely enough it didn’t really matter to Julia either. We both sort of liked it. I mean it isn’t going to become some sleeper hit or anything — it’s pretty much going to remain in obscurity with no great following. Ouch. Sorry about that sleeper line. Jolie’s performance was good, but I particularly enjoyed how Elle Fanning stayed perfectly in character throughout as the ditzy sleeping princess. Audiences generally liked the film, half the critics trashed it. It was completely adequate in our book. (Okay… Julia was maybe a little more enthused).

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have two dear childhood friends, let’s call them Nan and Fran. Over the holiday weekend Nan posted on Facebook that she was going to the beach. Fran immediately responded, “Thanks for the invite.” Nan shot back, “You want an invite? Pick up the phone once in a while.” And then a full-blown donnybrook ensued in which Fran also assumed that I was going to the beach with Nan and that we were conspiring against her. I never responded to any of the Facebook comments, but the end result is that Fran defriended all of us and is no longer speaking to any of us, including my daughter. How can I make this right, Answer Lady? — Defriended Dear Defriended Since you reference a daughter, I presume these are adults we are talking about,
which in and of itself is a bit weird. I suspect alcohol or some other mood-altering drug is behind this behavior, but that is no excuse for airing dirty laundry in public. The Answer Lady thinks your friend has done you a great service by defriending you. I would also commend you on your deportment in not engaging in such juvenile machinations. The burden of making “this right” is not on you. Sometimes the best course of action is putting a little distance between two moving targets. Meanwhile, invite

Nan and your daughter to the Butterfly Tea Room where the three of you can chat about the situation and enjoy a nice cup of tea in the bargain. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I recently went away for the weekend and left our 18-year-old son in charge. We received a call from our neighbor at 1am, telling us about the kid on the lawn and the loud music. What punishment do you think would be appropriate? We feel we were very lucky that no one got in a car and drove. He at least had the good sense to invite friends from the neighborhood who could walk. We take underage drinking very seriously. — Too Trusting Dear Too Trusting This is a rite of passage all parents must go through. The most obvious punishment is grounding and unplugging — no social media, no texting for a week. While in unplugging mode, the Answer Lady suggests a weekend spent kayaking and becoming one with nature to get his mind off alcohol. Aqua Trails and the Nature Center of Cape May could be just the ticket.

CAPE MAY STAGE PRESENTS RAUCOUS, MADCAP
FARCE
“Wildly funny!” ABC News “Ken Ludwig is one of those rare contemporary playwrights who thinks in terms of old-fashioned knockabout farce...” The New York Times
byKen Ludwig
directed by Roy Steinberg
In the tradition of madcap comedies, Moon Over Buffalo is a contemporary classic — a zany, slapstick, antics-driven, backstage farce that follows actors George and Charlotte Hay as they attempt to realize their big chance to move from Buffalo theater to Hollywood movies.

CCA holds year-round classes and art camps for all ages - 3 to 14 and adults. We welcome new students, and we are recruiting new teachers, teaching assistants, and curriculum writers.
Community Radio – WCFA-LP 101.5 FM Cape May County’s hometown radio station is on the air 24x7 with quality commercial-free, “Jazz and More” programming. We are all volunteers, providing the community with a hometown voice, and live coverage of the County’s key events.
Shore Slams
Join the fun, or come help us plan and produce this growing storytelling event. Weekly at Lucky Bones Restaurant through the fall, winter, and spring, and a heck of a time!
African American History Tour & Exhibits Hidden in plain sight among Cape May’s Victorian beauty is the city’s African-American history and heritage. CCA presents an entertaining and informative walking tour, and an annual history exhibit. We are looking for tour docents, historians and curators.
Franklin Street School
CCA saved and preserved this 1927 historic landmark with the vision of opening a Community Arts Center. That’s how we got our name. The dream is still alive. We welcome your help in getting this center up and going.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he autumn exodus has begun. Yes, I’m talking about southbound bird migration. Beginning in July, arctic and subarctic breeding shorebirds like short-billed dowitcher, lesser yellowlegs and whimbrel are already touching down in the marshes of Cape May. By month’s end tens of thousands of tree swallows will gather to the feast of flying insects that summer temperatures nurture. Come August and the first of the migrating songbirds and birds of prey reach Cape May airspace. They will continue into December. So if you are looking for a time to find out what this bird watching craze is all about, try right NOW. Cape May Bird Observatory hosts daily field trips and has a supply of quality loaner binoculars. If you tried bird-watching in the past and found it frustrating, the problem was the binocular you were using. Having the right binocular makes all the difference. It turns “damn I can’t find this stupid thing” into “WOW” in about 1.733 seconds. “What did you say this bird was called?” “An indigo bunting.”
“Are they rare?” “Not now; not in Cape May,” “It’s so blue!” “Yes, indigo blue. Puts a summer sky to shame doesn’t it?” “And the bird we saw earlier that looked like it was dressed for Mardis Gras?” “That was bobolink — a very colorful and vocal blackbird.” “But you said that one was rare.” No, they’re common as migrants. “It’s
just uncommon to see one still in breeding plumage. By late summer most bobolinks are mustard-colored. You might mistake one for a large sparrow until it calls. A clear belllike bink. Flocks passing overhead sound like ceramic wind chimes ringing in the heavens.” How many different species might a person expect to see on an average walk? Between 30 and 70 depending upon conditions and habitat. But highly skilled birders have tallied more than 200 species in a day. And no it doesn’t matter if you can’t tell a pelican from a parking meter — CMBO walks are led by local experts who identify the birds for you. All you need to do is marvel, the way you used to before you slipped into adulthood. So don’t despair because you’ve spent so many years missing a world filled with marvels. Celebrate because after your first bird walk the rest of your days will now be filled with discovery and wonder. For a walk schedule and free checklist of Cape May’s birds go to the Northwood Center 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point or visit www.birdcapemay.org.
