USA Today’s “#1 Fried Chicken” “LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

Our roving photographer bumped into Marina from Princeton, NJ while she was on her way to work. Just because we’re good like that, we gave her a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. What are you doing here in Cape May? I’m here for the summer. I’m a hostess at Peter Shields and I’m trying to enjoy my summer as best as I can. Summer is over... No it’s not! How was your summer? It was wonderful. It was the one of the best summers I’ve had, I needed to get away from my routine over the years. Would you consider moving here? Yes. What’s your plan for life? My plan is to enjoy every moment and not plan to much ahead because you have to enjoy every single day. What was a highlight of your summer? Reuniting with my best girlfriends and enjoying new restaurants. Also going to the boardwalk and meeting new friends. If they would make a movie about your life, what would be the tittle and who would play you? It would be called Fairies For Life or something... Adventure Time Fairies... And no one, I would play me. Do you have a quote that guides you? Life is more fun when you don’t plan things.
The winner of our next giveaway will receive a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
am saddened by the news from Atlantic City. Not for the loss of the casinos as such, since they were never really for the 1 per cent, or even the next 98 per cent below that. And do not get me started on that city’s bus station — I was once marooned there at midnight during a full moon in summer, caught by the whimsies of the maniacs who plan the bus schedules by throwing glue-soaked random numbers at a wall then committing that to print. Let me say only that the werewolves and vampires were the least of my problems, and that I was very glad I had my heavy-duty mahogany walking cane, the one bound in hoops of iron with an apple-sized solid silver monkey head on top. But the boardwalk has always had a special place in my heart, since that fine day when, emboldened by a bottle of finest malt whisky, Ernie Hemingway, Amelia Earhart, Henry Ford and I decided to ride one of the wondrous Rolling Chairs back to Cape May around midnight. We all drunkenly pushed it up to speed on a quiet section of
the boardwalk and then endeavored to leap into the hurtling car. The whisky, plus a certain amount of competitive jostling, was not idea for safety, and sure enough, Ford’s loose cummerbund tangled in the wheel and down he went in a shrieking tangle. We laughed, of course: the bonds of friendship among our gay band ran deep but also tended to be on the rough side. The remaining three of us piled aboard, and turning back just to throw a quarter-full bottle (a cheap blend: we kept the Highland Park to ourselves) to Ford as he rolled to a
halt behind us with a shouted “drink half and pour half on the open wounds, old chap!”, we then huddled low so as not to be seen by cops. Well, the ruse worked almost to the end of the boardwalk, when a one of that city’s chimpanzee constabulary (a long story) spotted us and with an “ook” emptied his service revolver at the chair, shooting off Ernie’s toupe and striking the cigarillo from my lips. I rolled a hand grenade back at him and with a single loud “boom” he was blown off into the ocean and we were propelled out of town at great speed. Did you know that the route from AC to Cape May is all a gentle downhill, if you know the proper way? By the time the sun came up we were coasting gently past Uncle Bill’s, and simply hit the brake a little and rolled right in for a stack of pancakes. What? You dare question the authenticity of my story? Well, all right, I concede that I may have exaggerated a little: the truth is we stopped six feet short and had to wait ten minutes for a table. I DO like to gild a story a little, as you all know by now.

The Activity Column
Y
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, collecting sea glass
ou know how it is — you’re trying to unwind, but you’re all keyed up. You need an activity that allows you to concentrate, just a little, on something new. Searching for sea glass is just such an activity. Sea glass is formed when bits of discarded bottles are tumbled by the sea until they are frosted and wash up on the shore. Glass seems to take about a decade to be properly finished, and purists will toss back pieces that aren’t ready yet. Sea glass is distinct from Cape May diamonds, which are semi-precious quartz pebbles, but many people collect both. Sea glass is also attractive because it represents survival through change, and reminds us that something can become even more beautiful after it’s been tossed around a bit. To collect sea glass, you don’t need equipment. You might take a bucket, but your pockets will do. Look for colorful glints among the crushed shells on the shoreline. Some seekers keep to the water’s edge where there is more debris, but the glass is harder to spot when it’s wet. You won’t be the only
one out there looking, so go early in the morning, or after a storm, when the water has churned things up. The rough waters of winter also kick up some good glass. Some experts recommend walking in a straight line, other suggest walking back and forth over the same ground a few times. Whether you find anything or not, you’re still taking a walk along the beach, so it’s a good day. Some people pick up any color they come across, and others focus on one color. (Orange is a rare find, apparently, so don’t limit yourself to that.) Some people will
gratefully accept pieces donated by other beachcombers, others prefer to keep only what they find themselves. There’s similar dissension about what to do with the sea glass. Craftspeople turn it into jewelry or artwork, others collect the stones in an old jelly jar, a pretty dish or a shell. Or buy sea glass products in stores like Whale’s Tale, the West End Garage, or the shop at Sunset Beach. Experts on sea glass will gather at Cape May’s Convention Hall September 27 and 28. Admission is $5 daily at the door, and the public is invited. There will be an open forum, presentations from experts, and over fifty exhibits by sea glass collectors, artisans, and authors. The annual “Shard of the Year” contest, with prizes in categories like buttons, art glass, historical and whimsical, awards $1,000 to the grand prize winner. The North American Sea Glass Association will donate a portion of the festival’s proceeds to Clean Ocean Action and the Wetlands Institute. Next week: Victorian Secrets

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My mother is about to celebrate her 65th birthday and she still dresses like a 20-yearold and dyes her hair platinum blond. She is constantly telling people she can still fit into her high school prom gown. My question is: why would you want to? Is there nothing I can do to stop her? – At My Wits End Dear At My Wits End No, there really isn’t anything you can do, except grin and bear it and be there for her when one day some young thing walks up to her with half a load on and asks why she’s trying to be something she is not. Getting older is not easy to accept, especially if you were a woman used to the attentions of men. But maybe you can ease the transition. I would suggest a mother-daughter appoint-

ment at Accents on Beauty. Beforehand, talk to both your mother and the beautician about changing the color to ONE tone down from platinum. Tell her a softened color will take ten years off her — and it will. Then work on the wardrobe. I suggest a trip to Caroline Boutique. Help her choose something sexy but appropriate. And I do not mean matronly. Classic hairstyles, classic clothes are that way for a reason — they make you look good. And we’re talking about one or two outfits.
Baby steps. The Answer Lady thinks once your mother receives compliments on the new way she looks, it will be an incentive to keep up the good work. Dear Answer Lady My neighbor and I have a great relationship but there is one issue hangs over us — their tree. It is clearly falling into my detached garage. It will only take one two bad Nor’easters and it will uproot. My neighbor says that is not the case and not to worry about it. I worry. – Hung Over Dear Hung Over A timeless problem which never gets any easier. You will not want to hear this, but the solution is that you pay for the tree removal. You can suggest they pay half, but I doubt they will. The Answer Lady suggests calling Top Notch. If that still meets with resistance, you may have to let nature take its course and let your insurance companies fight it out. Be warned that the “great relationship” will probably be put to the test. But how great could it have been? And what if someone is in or near the garage when the tree falls?

The book that everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.
These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
t seems like one of those years, again. Cold fronts drag then track north. Winds go east in the second day. Songbirds don’t carpet the Cape. Birders walk around Higbee Beach in A FUNK. Lighten up. Weather doesn’t determine whether there are birds in Cape May — it determines what birds and where. Try some seabird-watching at the Avalon Sea Watch. Northeast winds are great for a big scoter push. Or scan the rips for terns and jaegers. The beach at Cape May Point has been hosting lots of terns. Roseate Tern, anyone? Yours to find. And shorebirds. Winds with an easterly component ferry godwits and golden plovers our way. Ditto falcons. South Cape May and Bunker Pond are shorebird hotspots. The hawk watch from 1:00 to 5:00 is right astride the Falcon Freeway. So don’t whimper about the lack of fallouts. Bend with the wind — bird the conditions. Yes, you’ll need a spotting scope for seabirds. Isn’t it lucky CMBO has a sale going on right now?
Angled eyepiece gets the nod over straight-through models. You can scan over the scope with binoculars without stepping to the side. And your free eye won’t be competing with your scope eye for control of your brain. Your brain knows it doesn’t want to study the ground under your tripod. But whatever you do, don’t cheap the tripod. It is the foundation of high magnification. A $2,000 spotting scope isn’t worth a damn if the tripod is vibrating in the wind. So my advice to you is plan for an
autumn of great sea-birding. This means it’s time to finally buy that spotting scope you’ve been putting off. When someone shouts “Long-tailed Jaeger, going left just below the horizon,” you don’t want to be third in line for a quick glance through somebody else’s scope. Third in line means: “Sorry, missed it.” It also means a conversation with Brian Moscatello at the CMBO store at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point, somewhat after the fact. Of course you can always travel to the Arctic to see these birds but you’ll have to wait 10 months and the trip will cost about three times the amount of a good spotting scope/tripod combo, which you are going to want anyway. The Arctic is made for spotting scopes–open and bird-filled. Just like so much of Cape May, once you get out of the shrubbery. East winds. Be at ease but be ready for scanning the horizon. Where possibility lies.
