Our roving photographer bumped into Stephanie Lauren Hanover from outside Philadelphia, while she was on her way to work. Just because we’re good like that, we gave her a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. How long have you been working here? One year. What do you think about this first year? I think the summer season has been really busy. It’s a very beautiful coastal town and I’m looking forward to the fall season with the fall harvest, Halloween, and Oktoberfest. I love the fall Do you plan on staying here for long? Probably through the end of the next summer or early spring. Then I want to try to get up to Philadelphia. I miss the city life. I like Cape May, but I’m missing the opportunities in terms of jobs and nightlife. Do you have plans for vacation? I’m trying to go back to Cincinnati probably in the late fall, and I will go to Boston for my birthday in October to see my sister. What is your favorite book? I like Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice. Do you have a message for our readers? Definitely take advantage of when you do little incentives like this, with gift certificates. There’s so many journalists and books you can read to learn about different things. Reading keeps you young and educates you. I’m excited about getting a book right now.
The winner of our next giveaway will receive a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
am afraid to say, I need eyeglasses. After all these years of ocular perfection, I realize that perhaps the time has come. Oh, there were little hints along the way: when I did not win Cape May’s Willie Tell Archery contest last summer after a decade of holding the title, that was a clue (in my defense, the chap under the Mcintosh DID have a rather prominent Adam’s apple, and really, once all the hoarse shrieking was done with, he was able to make a full recovery) . And I did recently spend a full hour lecturing my faithful manservant, Kitchener, on the importance of personal grooming and shaving on a daily basis, before he happened to wander past behind me and politely asked why I was speaking to Igor the Stuffed Bear. Most vitally, tho, I was feeding Young Albert this week, and instead of giving him a tin of Farmer Miggins Perfectly Fine Food For Dogs of Uncertain Temperament (it’s mostly oatmeal with a sheep’s head boiled in for protein, so sheep and cattle dogs get all they need without realizing that their charges are in fact lunch on hooves and getting any clever ideas) I opened a can of hearts
marinated in blood meant for … well, never mind what they are meant for: we have some unusual parties here at The D’Catur Mansion …. But anyways, I did not realize my mistake until the smell wafted up, by which time the scoundrel had wolfed down the lot. Now, I need not tell you the effect a pound of raw bloody meat had on the mood of a perpetually-angry dog. It was like The Hound of the Baskervilles (which my old pal Conan Doyle happened to base on the Young Albert of the day when he visited Cape May one, and was savaged about the ankles) but smaller
and meaner and it took the entire household staff and myself with shields and brushes (the former from the armory) to force him outside until he passed out from sheer anger and bloodlust. But I cannot afford to make mistakes like that, and so have summoned an Optical Doctor to come and measure me for the latest in wearable binoculars. I want something that can assist in such workaday tasks as reading labels on medicine bottles (particularly the tranquilizer I use in my blowgun to sedate troublesome Shoebies in summertime) but also can let me see in the ultraviolet and infra-red spectrum, for my battles with creatures of the night. Perhaps mirrored, too, so I can attend city meetings and have a little nap with no-one noticing, and also because I adored the TV show CHIPs. And a nice thick black frame to bolster my status as an artistic hipster. Oh, I also need rear-view mirrors and possibly a laser, to help me deal with ninjas and people from Wildwood, both of whom tend to sneak up on a chap unawares, intent on mischief. Really, I am not asking too much, I feel.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s time for a lecture.
ow that the Cape May kiddies have gone back to school, it’s time for you to learn something so you can stay a step ahead. The lecture, “The Summer of 1787,” presented by David O. Stewart on Sunday, October 12, fits the bill. The United States Constitution, the world’s oldest, and the shortest, written national constitution, is a staggering blueprint for a nation. It was inspired by documents like the Magna Carta of 1215 and the Mayflower Compact of 1620, and, for its radical protection of the separation of church and state, the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom. It has influenced the constitutions of more than a hundred nations around the world, including nations unfriendly to the United States. America’s first national “Thanksgiving Day” was created by George Washington in 1789 in honor of the Constitution. It’s not a perfect document, but it’s worth celebrating. Stewart’s lecture reminds us that the crafters of the Constitution were also imperfect. These all-too-human found-
ers bargained, argued and compromised in secret, in the heat of a Philadelphia summer. They made and rejected deals based on personalities and grudges. They failed to solve the contradiction of slavery in the land of the free. They made “grimy” compromises after hours, in pubs. Finally, they pledged to move forward together as united states. Stewart manages to present the flaws of our founding fathers while maintaining respect for these men and what they accomplished. David O. Stewart is a Yale-educated constitutional lawyer, author and speaker
known for his crisp prose and sharp wit. The lecture will be based on his book, “The Summer of 1797: The Men Who Invented the Constitution,” a Washington Post bestseller which won the Washington Writing Award as Best Book in 2007. Stewart is also the author of “American Emperor,” a biography of Aaron Burr, and “Impeached,” about the trial of Andrew Johnson. His novel, “The Lincoln Deception,” an historical mystery about the John Wilkes Booth Conspiracy, has been called “a great what-if?” and a “compelling mystery.” “The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution,” will be presented by David O. Stewart on Sunday, October 12 at 4 p.m. at Cape Island Baptist Church. Tickets are $30, and for an additional $20 you can attend a “Meet the Speaker” Reception at the Queen Victoria Bed and Breakfast following the Lecture. For tickets and more information, call MAC at 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278. Next week: Halloweem

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating this man for two years. We are an older couple, both with children in their 30s and there is tension among them when my friend and I try to have a family gathering. Is there anything you can suggest to appease it? I’ve been divorced for over a decade. My friend has been a widower for nearly the same time and marriage is certainly in our future. - At Odds Dear At Odds Emotions run high when older children see their parents “moving on.” The best thing you can do is simply persevere. As long as your family gatherings remain civil, that’s the best you can hope for until your respective children come to realize that your commitment to one another is not fleeting. That said, the Answer Lady does have one suggestion which might
Wise answers to perplexing questions
ease the tensions. Why not gather the clan and take them to the Lobster House’s Raw Bar while the weather is still lovely? Order some crabs and give them some hammers and beer (although not too much beer). If that doesn’t loosen things up, they simply have no sense of fun and should be left to their own devises, while you and your friend ride off into a beautiful sunset without them. Dear Answer Lady My son’s father and I have been divorced for five years. Our son is 10 years old and very active
in sports. The problem is my ex’s behavior when he comes to the games. He has a problem with alcohol and can be verbally abusive which is why I divorced him and he harasses my son and the opponents’ teammates on the sidelines. It only happened twice, but I know it will get worse. What should I do about it? – Chagrined Dear Chagrined The Answer Lady is a big believer in karma and in the power of good sportsmanship. Although this is painful for you both, ultimately the coach will intercede. He will have no choice, if he himself is to retain control over his team. If you ex continues his boorish behavior or gets abusive with the coach, then the referee will be called in and he will be expelled from all games. So, until then, you must both hang tough. If you are on speaking terms with your ex, you might want to forewarn him, so that he can perhaps consider about altering his modus operandi. Meanwhile, the Answer Lady thinks a healing pancake breakfast is in order at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. There’s just nothing like pancakes smothered in syrup to reinforce the fact that life is good.

The book that everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.
These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

CLOUDY is a very smart pit bull terrier. He was brought to the shelter after his previous family fell on hard times. He may be large but he is very sweet and gentle with children. He is crate trained and walks on a leash without pulling. Cloudy has graduated from the CLASS training program and is one smart boy.
«
RUPERT is a pit bull terrier who loves other dogs. When he first arrived at the shelter, Rupert was very anxious but his mom helped him quickly adjust. He is very smart and knows several commands and tricks. Rupert will do best in a home with no young children or cats. If you’re looking for a playful companion, come meet Rupert!
«
PINKY is a fun loving pit bull terrier. She has been at the shelter for over a year and is currently a student in the CLASS training program. Pinky loves working with people and is learning very useful commands that will help her in her forever home. She is also crate trained which will make her transition to a new home much easier.

«
BUGSY is a loving boy who is patiently waiting for someone to take him home. He may look shy and reserved but as soon as you pet Bugsy, you’ll have a new best friend. When Bugsy arrived at the shelter he had an eye problem but he has since had surgery and is healed. Best of all, Bugsy’s adoption fee is only $35.
«
PARIS and ROMA are very sweet but a little shy. These sisters are very close and would love to go to a new home together. They have two brothers, Austin and Houston, at the shelter as well. The shelter has a “buy one get one free” program for cats, so you can take both girls home for the price of one adoption fee.
«
REBECCA is a very energetic little girl. She has been patiently waiting at the shelter for two years. She will slow down to let you pet her and maybe, in a few years, she will slow down enough to be a lap cat. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. If you’re looking for a sweet little girl to brighten your day, Rebecca is the cat for you!

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
t seems like one of those years, again. Cold fronts drag then track north. Winds go east in the second day. Songbirds don’t carpet the Cape. Birders walk around Higbee Beach in A FUNK. Lighten up. Weather doesn’t determine whether there are birds in Cape May — it determines what birds and where. Try some seabird-watching at the Avalon Sea Watch. Northeast winds are great for a big scoter push. Or scan the rips for terns and jaegers. The beach at Cape May Point has been hosting lots of terns. Roseate Tern, anyone? Yours to find. And shorebirds. Winds with an easterly component ferry godwits and golden plovers our way. Ditto falcons. South Cape May and Bunker Pond are shorebird hotspots. The hawk watch from 1:00 to 5:00 is right astride the Falcon Freeway. So don’t whimper about the lack of fallouts. Bend with the wind — bird the conditions. Yes, you’ll need a spotting scope for seabirds. Isn’t it lucky CMBO has a sale going on right now?
Angled eyepiece gets the nod over straight-through models. You can scan over the scope with binoculars without stepping to the side. And your free eye won’t be competing with your scope eye for control of your brain. Your brain knows it doesn’t want to study the ground under your tripod. But whatever you do, don’t cheap the tripod. It is the foundation of high magnification. A $2,000 spotting scope isn’t worth a damn if the tripod is vibrating in the wind. So my advice to you is plan for an
autumn of great sea-birding. This means it’s time to finally buy that spotting scope you’ve been putting off. When someone shouts “Long-tailed Jaeger, going left just below the horizon,” you don’t want to be third in line for a quick glance through somebody else’s scope. Third in line means: “Sorry, missed it.” It also means a conversation with Brian Moscatello at the CMBO store at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point, somewhat after the fact. Of course you can always travel to the Arctic to see these birds but you’ll have to wait 10 months and the trip will cost about three times the amount of a good spotting scope/tripod combo, which you are going to want anyway. The Arctic is made for spotting scopes–open and bird-filled. Just like so much of Cape May, once you get out of the shrubbery. East winds. Be at ease but be ready for scanning the horizon. Where possibility lies.
