Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
will leave it up to Joe Carney, he of that landmark beachfront bar and restaurant, to sum up the Exit 0 Jazz Festival that just hit town. Joe called me to pay tribute to Michael Kline, who runs the festival. “Michael Kline almost single-handedly transformed the town last weekend,” said Joe. “The atmosphere was electric. It’s quite remarkable.” Joe wasn’t the only business owner to appreciate the efforts that Michael (helped by an enthusiastic staff of volunteers) put into the festival, which has become a dynamic force in only two years. It was a very good weekend for many bars and restaurants in the downtown area. “The energy was incredible,” said organizer Michael. “Davina and the Vagabands at Carney’s, Aaron Parks at Aleathea’s, Rene Marie leaving people in tears at Convention Hall because her performance was so powerful. And then Jon Batiste — he was all all over Convention Hall. He was standing on chairs, went up into the risers and ended his gig by marching his band out the hall and then sat down and started signing CDs. It was off the charts.”

altogether more dynamic and democratic city council. A quick shout-out to Cape May Brewing Company, who are expanding their reach by supplying five beers to Coastal Blue restaurant at Hotel Icona, in Diamond Beach, just before Wildwood Crest (it’s actually in Lower Township). I recently visited Coastal Blue and was really impressed by the place. Beautiful design, and the menu looks great. Those folks have got some exciting things happening next summer — watch this space for more details. Oh, and the Cape May Brewery beers will be available as of this Saturday, November 15. Go give it a try. Go over the drawbridge and live a little! Finally, along with a lot of people in Cape May, I only recently heard of the death of Bruce Minnix, at his daughter’s home in New Hampshire. Bruce was a leading light among preservationists who changed the future of this town in the early 1970s, preventing some of our landmark buildings from being demolished. Bruce went on to become mayor of the city and his passion for Cape May will never be forgotten. See our December color issue for a tribute.
³
Michael is already looking ahead to the next jazz festival, which will be held May 29-31. It will include an outdoor stage at the Emlen Physick, plus headliner gigs at Convention Hall and other venues throughout town. We went to press before the results of last week’s Cape May City Council election were known, so I would like to take this belated opportunity to say well done to the three winning candidates, Jerry Inderwies Jr, Bea Pessagno and Shaine Meier. I think that, together, they should bring a lot to the table and I am looking forward to an

The Fabulous $25 Cape Atlantic Book Company Giveaway Our roving photographer bumped into Bobby Wridelmann from Matawan, NJ while he was walking on the beach. To make his day, we gave him a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. What brought you here? I love it down here; I’m staying at a B&B for three days and today is my last day. Done anything fun over those three days? I just enjoy being next to the ocean. I’ve been to the lighthouse, down to Sunset Beach, and to the Washington Street Mall. Do you come in the off-season? Yes, but there’s not much of a night life for a single guy like me! What do you do for a living? I’m retired; I used to work in the shipping industry at Port Elizabeth in New England. Any travel plans for retirement? I want to see the west coast. Favorite author? Stuart Woods. Advice for our readers? Read!
The winner of our next giveaway will get a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
adore ice skating, whilst at the very same time having a terrible fear of having someone skate over my fingers, scattering the severed digits across the ice. This is not entirely without cause: back in the day, when every Winter we used to turn on the hoses and flood Beach, making a rink almost a mile long, Ernie Hemingway was showing off by attempting a Triple Axel as he passed Congress Hall, and got his skates tangled in the strap of his elephant gun. Ernie crashed to the ice, his gun went off, causing Hugo The Skating Bear (more of Hugo some other time... suffice it to say he was a large Black bear who washed up one day and to his surprise and ours, fitted in very well, with nary a comment about his being 600 pounds and covered in coarse fur) to jump in surprise and accidentally (or not — Hugo was no fan of men with guns, and more than once he and Ernie came to blows after too many whiskys) ran over Ernie as he spun on the ice like a runaway Pokemon. What? You think I am not aware of
youth culture? The D’Catur great-greatgreat grandkids plague this mansion every weekend, and with them come all sorts of horrid modern plastic toys). Damned if Hugo didn’t neatly chop off all ten fingers and thumbs, plus the end or Ernie’s barrel. His rifle barrel. I am not one for euphemisms. Luckily we had a needle and fishing line handy, and Ernie had already drank so much malt that he was barely aware of losing his fingers, so we managed to stitch them back
on pretty well, all things considered Admittedly, I got one thumb on backwards, and Young Albert swallowed another, so we had to fashion a prosthetic from ivory and leather, but still, Ernie seemed happy enough, and Hugo was very sweet in dropping by the Brown Room later that evening with a bag of fingers packed in ice, should any of the re-attached digits not “take.” We did not ask where he had found them: Hugo did tend to “discover” body parts regularly, whether or not the original owners were done using them. I do not think Ernie skated again after that; nor was he as fast with his elephant gun. As for Hugo, well he actually took to skating more often, with especially long, sharp blades, and it was not a proper winter until someone lost an extremity or few. Since then, though, I have skated only in flat shoes, and wearing Kevlar oven gloves. The latter are not only safe, but cosy and, I think, rather chic.

The Activity Column
W
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, let there be light
e are back to standard time and it gets dark early, like, crawl-intoyour-pajamas-before-dinner early. You can understand why people have always tried to bring light to the dark days of winter. Since the 7th century, Nordic people have used the Yule Log to bring extra light to their homes, and the Yule tradition spread through Europe. An entire tree was brought into the house with one end in the fireplace and the rest sticking out into the room. The fireplace end would be lit, using the remnants of last year’s tree, and the tree was allowed to burn for twelve days. When Christianity spread to Europe, the tree was lit on Christmas Eve. This drastic form of indoor lighting may have been the precursor to today’s twinkling Christmas trees. Historians disagree as to whether the Yule Log originated as part of a religious ceremony. Depending on the culture, different traditions were associated with the Yule Log. In some places, the entire family helped to cut the tree down; in others, a strapping young man would be selected
to bring it home. The family might carry it around the house three times. The log might be decorated with ivy, pinecones, or holly, or sprinkled with salt or wine. Some thought the burning cleansed the house of the previous year’s problems. Others believed that the remnants of the Yule Log would protect the house from lightning strikes throughout the year. The ashes could be used as medicine, or sprinkled in the garden as fertilizer. Some stories suggest the burning Yule Log would prod the sluggish sun to get moving again. It must have worked, because the days start to get a little longer that time of year. Logs
shrunk with the advent of central heating, when it became impractical to burn a tree in the house. The tradition lives on with small logs, candles, or a Yule Log cake. Bring light to your winter with a trip to Cape May. Dine by the fireplace at the Blue Pig or the Washington Inn, or snuggle before the fire at the Victorian Lace Inn. Reach for the stars with a climb up the lighthouse. Admission is $8 for adult tickets; $3 for child tickets, and it’s open from noon to 3pm. Join Santa is at the Christmas Tree Lighting at the Emlen Physick Estate on Saturday, November 22 at 7pm, and admission is free, as are self-guided house tours that evening. Visitors are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Cape May Community Food Bank. The Carriage House Gallery will feature a free holiday exhibit through January 3. “An Old-fashioned Christmas: Holiday Traditions through the Years” captures Christmas past with model trains, toys and more. For more information, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278. Next week: The Designer Show House

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband and seven-year-old daughter and I planned a trip to Disneyworld for my daughter’s birthday. I packed the car and the kid and I was ready to go and had asked my husband to gas up the car the night before. He didn’t. Not only did we have to stop for gas, he stopped for a smoke — he cannot smoke in the car because of my daughter — and when I told him we were going to miss our flight, he said, “I don’t care; I’m not going to have another cigarette for the next eight hours.” Of course, we hit traffic and missed our flight and our free day pass for Universal Studios and our rental car. That cigarette cost us $400. And he never apologized, but maintained none of the consequences had anything to do with his actions. What do I do about this? — Smoking
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Mad Dear Smoking This reminds the Answer Lady of a Country-Western song called “Put Another Log on the Fire”: Cook me up some bacon and some beans; And go out to the car and change the tire; Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans; Then put another log on the fire, babe; And come and tell me why you’re leaving me. So, other than divorce, what to do about it? The Answer Lady has discovered the hard way that anyone who still smokes is hard core. Ultimatums go ignored OR are used as
an excuse to light up more. Not gassing up the car the night before is another whole subject of selfish behavior which is probably not going to change either. The solution? Vacation without daddy which, given his cavalier attitude regarding you and his own daughter, will probably suit him just fine. Dear Answer Lady I very much want my son to get into an Ivy League college. He and I are working very hard on his entry essay. My husband is furious with me and says I should let our son write his own essay, but is it not the parent’s responsibility to help the child? — Helpful Parent Dear Helpful There is a fine line between help and enabling, so it is difficult to tell where you fall. Here is what the Answer Lady would suggest: You act as editor, not creator. If you have already adopted that approach, perhaps your husband is being a little too strict. If, however, you are indeed doing the bulk of the work, remember, you are not doing your son any favors. So, take a hard look at how your help is being manifested.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
TRIXIE, this cute, not-yet-threeyear-old dog, has been at the shelter twice. But it’s simply because of bad luck — Trixie is great little pup! She’s too scared to be picked up, but she’ll love to crawl on your lap when you sit. Loves: cats, dogs and squeaky toys. Not into: kids. Weighs: 10 pounds. Please come and meet her!
«
LEO is a sweet boy who loves to have fun and play! He is great with kids and other dogs, is very smart, and knows “sit” and “paw!” Most importantly, Leo is very polite (don’t let his strong appearance deceive you!) Leo would love to show you just how polite he can be, so get thee to the shelter!
«
SCRAPPY is a lovable older boy who was recently surrendered because his elderly owner — who had Scrappy since the age of 10 weeks and loved every minute of it — could no longer care for him. Scrappy is great with kids, and he’s super well pottytrained, so being in the shelter all day is difficult for him. Please have a heart.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
COKE is the last of his siblings left at the shelter, and the staff felt so bad for him (and liked him so much!) they let him be a floor cat. It has been the best thing for Coke, because the cage made his so shy, and now he’s having a ball. The only thing keeping him down? Coke’s sadness over not having a forever home. Come adopt him today.
«
HILDA loves big pillows, toys (just the fun ones), cuddling with humans, running, and being pet. Don’t let that annoyed expression above fool you, Hilda is a sweetheart who will warm up to you — and LOVE you — if only you give her a chance.
«
MADONNA came to the shelter with her sister, but for some reason the sister was adopted and Madonna was not — after being together their whole lives. Now, Madonna is in a cage with another tiger, feeling very insecure about this whole leftbehind thing. Care to show her she’s just as cool as the other cats? Come meet her!

Bird Droppings
B
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
oo-hoo. Cape May’s annual birdwatching convocation is over. Once again your ambition to take up bird watching has come to nothing. Now you are thinking you’ll have to wait a whole year to find out what all the fun is about. No you won’t Fact is November is a great month for getting into birding. Waterfowl numbers are at their peak. Thousands of sea birds are still migrating past the Avalon Seawatch. Hawks will continue to gather over Cape May Point State Park and the hawk counter will be there daily. Say hello. With the crowds gone, she just might be able to chat. As for songbirds, your back yard should be filling up with wintering species — birds that will be here until April and can be encouraged to stay with a few well-placed bird feeders. Head on over to Cape May Bird Observatory and get some bird feeding tips from the experts. It’s fun, cheep entertainment and it may even help a bird or two survive the privations of winter. I’m not trying to guilt trip you into feed-

ing birds; wild birds are perfectly able to take care of themselves. I’m just pointing out that a bird-filled yard is more entertaining than a bird-free one. Or don’t you like male Cardinals? They’re common year-round residents. Also, cardinals are shy. They don’t like crowds. But they do love sunflower seed and open elevated landing platforms. Cardinals have big feet. Small perches frustrate them. Cardinals are also early and late feeders. Adjust your viewing hours accordingly.
And don’t forget water. Birds need water in winter, too. Frozen water in your bird bath won’t win you any converts. You can buy electric water heaters or dump the ice and refill the basin every morning. Never, never add antifreeze to the water. It is toxic to birds. And if you find that one of the birds attracted to your yard is a bird-eating hawk, try erecting a brush pile near the feeders so birds can gain shelter quickly when the alarm is sounded. And remember to keep your cat indoors; even well-fed tabbies can’t resist haunting feeders. Squirrels. Sorry, you’re on your own. But you can try putting out ears of dry corn. Squirrels may carry it to some corner of your yard so their peers won’t get it, thus leaving your feeders in peace. On the other hand, squirrels need to eat, too. If your seed budget is lavish, feed the squirrels, too. They love peanuts. Above all, enjoy the mosaic of color and motion that is your back yard. Keep good records and take photos.
