Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

f you are among the several thousand people who will be wrapping up warm and watching with friends/family as the 49th annual West Cape May Christmas Parade makes its merry way through town on Saturday, December 6, I have a plea to make to you... Please reach into your pocket and make sure that this year’s parade is paid for. You might be surprised by this news, but it costs at least $30,000 to put this spectacular together... those marching bands and the Mummers, for instance, don’t travel here from Philly or the other end of the state for nothing. There are real logistics involved with putting together this three-hour jamboree. The fundraising effort was not helped when Charlotte Daily, who started this parade back in 1965, passed away earlier this year. Charlotte made the parade happen every year as practically an act of will and her presence has been missed. But the good people of West Cape May, led by Mayor Pam Kaithern, have been working their socks off to make sure that all is well and good for the 2014 version — except that this year there has been a real fall-off in donations. We had

BIRD IS THE WORD

a fundraiser at the Exit Zero Store in October and we noticed a drop-off from last year, which is why we pledged $500 of our own money to the parade. Even the biggest fundraiser of them all, the one held at Congress Hall, fell short of last year’s total, even though it still raised more than $8,000 last time I heard, which is still a magnificent effort from the people at Cape May’s landmark hotel. Now here’s where YOU come in. Think of the fun you will have on December 6. Think of the good it does for this island, for the community spirit, for the businesses that operate here. Now, please visit our online store, at

www.ezstore.us. On the home page you will see a link that says Support West Cape May Christmas Parade. Click that and you can make a credit card or Paypal donation right there. What’s $10 for three hours of family entertainment? Or for that matter, $20. I implore you — what better way to make a contribution to the community spirit this festive season by supporting this marvellous occasion? Remember, the parade is funded 100% by donations. Be one of those people! And here’s another way to help. We are selling luminary bags at the Exit Zero Store which pay tribute to Charlotte Daily. The luminaries cost $20 and all proceeds go to support the parade. I, too, get excited to see the old railroad tracks emerging at Higbee and Sunset Beaches — it’s a fascinating reminder of the past. But... I think it’s time the state moved in and took them out. Those jagged, rusty pieces of metal are accidents waiting to happen. Looking for holiday shopping ideas? Head to the Exit Zero Store on Black Friday for a party and sale — 20% off everything. And the usual treats from local vendors. See you there, and Happy Thanksgiving!

The Fabulous $25 Cape Atlantic Book Company Giveaway Our roving photographer bumped into Kim Simon. To make her day, we gave her a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. Where are you from? I just moved to Cape May today! From where? Cherry Hill. How long are you planning on staying on Cape Island? I don’t know... maybe forever. I have a job at Cape May Olive Oil Company. What was the incentive for behind the move? My kids are all gone, and we just love the area. Are you familiar with Cape May in the offseason? It gets slower, but there’s still stuff going on! How old are your kids? 32, 30, 25 and 21. They have moved all over, and they’d like me to move closer to them, but I’m too old for that. I just need a quiet place. What’s your favorite book? One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The winner of our next giveaway will get a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

saw some ice today. And I don’t mean in a glass of whisky in The Brown Room (as you know well, I casually peruse drinkers’ glasses, and if I spot a fine Malt being polluted by ice, I smash the offence into fragments with my walking cane). No, I mean on The D’Catur Mansion’s boating lake. “You have a boating lake?” I hear you cry in a jealous rage. Well, simmer down now. It is for my Great Naval Battles Reenactment Society club. A dozen of us meet once a month with our scale model ships and re-fight classic engagements, from Salamis to The Sinking of the Bismarck. The latter period can be a little tricksy as those miniature guns can send a tiny yet powerful shell a few hundred yards, and more than one Shoobie has returned to their hire car to find it disabled by a stray salvo. Anyways, once the weather turns cold I keep the pond ice free with my wonderful tiny replica of the nuclear powered icebreaker Yamal. That little marvel is actually powered by a proper nuclear reactor no larger than a box of matches, a triumph of

engineering by yours truly, I admit. Mind you, I had a little trouble with reactor shielding, and a minor accident means no-one can approach closer than 30 feet for a few years, so she has to be berthed at the far end of the pond when we are in the grounds. Anyways, my treasured if lethal Yamal was steaming around the pond the other day when she most definitely crashed through a sheet of ice, leaving tiny shards and the occasional irradiated fish floating behind her. “Is Jack Frost here so fast?” I wondered? Note: my mother, the dear departed Mrs

D’Catur, believed in the actual personage of Jack Frost, and used to leave small sacrificial offerings out for him every December. Come to think of it she did the same for some 45 other deities and demi-gods. She used to grow frustrated at the lack of a volcano nearby in which to hurl a virgin, so would satisfy herself by leaving the stove on, in the hope that an unwary guest might burn their hand by leaning on it. Anyways, ice. My mind turns to the usual Cape May seasonal rituals — the skating rink, Polar Bear hunt and penguin migration. Of course, we no longer hunt Polar Bears: that would be inhumane. We simply head to Wildwood with a white furry costume and pay some layabout $10 to be harried for a few hours with ivory harpoons and nets. But my favorite of all is the Ice Ordeal: when the ocean freezes over, we cut two holes 100 yards apart, and myself and a dozen muscular lads and lithe ladies strip naked, slather ourselves in lard and retire to Martini Beach for a party. Swim? Don’t be ridiculous! What a waste of oiled youth!

The Activity Column

D

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Designer Show House

ecorating for the holidays can be a lot of fun. This time of year, Christmas gets all of the attention, but there are holidays all year long, and this year’s Designer Show House gives you inspiration for every page of the calendar. The Cape May Designer Show House, now in its ninth year, offers visitors a tour of a different, professionally-decorated Cape May home each year. Visitors are treated to lots of fresh ideas and a full-color program book with information about the designers, products and vendors used in the home, so they can give their own homes a little extra holiday magic. Designers represent 12 different holidays in 12 rooms of this late-19th century home with its distinctive Mansard roof — the Ocean Victorian, located at 25 Ocean Street. A Mansard roof is a clever design which maximizes living space without increasing the height of the building. It is a four-sided, steep roof that ensures the attic level is usable living space, similar to a Dutch gambrel or curb roof. It gets its name from

a 15th century French architect named Francois Mansart. (Like our own Captain Mey, Monsieur Mansart goes down in history with his name misspelled.) Mansart may have used his design to skirt zoning laws limiting the number of floors per building, or to keep masonry costs down when adding a level to an existing building. The Ocean Victorian seems to use its Mansard to capitalize on views of the ocean. The “Celebrating Holidays” theme is carried throughout the house. The Solstice Salon, or formal parlor, is warm and inviting, right down to the fireplace. The powder room

celebrates Chinese New Year. The dining room, fittingly, is given over to Thanksgiving, and the kitchen is Christmas. The billiard room belongs to Arbor Day — must be the sticks. The bedrooms mark Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Earth Day and Flag Day. The themes are easily recognizable but not overpowering, and the house ready to be enjoyed all year. The Designer Show House will be open until June 14, 2015. I prefer a self-guided tour, but there are guided tours available. Check the website, capemaymac.org, or call 609-884-5404 for times and to purchase tickets. During the Christmas season, you can combine your visit with a tour of the nearby Cherry House. There are also dinner or lunch packages available for dining at the Carriage House Cafe or several other Cape May restaurants. Admission is $20 and proceeds benefit the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC), a not-for-profit committed to promoting the preservation, interpretation, and cultural enrichment of the Cape May region. Next week: Christmas Stories from East Lynne

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady As usual, we are going to my sisterin-law’s for Thanksgiving. The problem is — the woman cannot cook anything, let alone turkey. And she is oblivious to this fact and resistant to any suggestions on my part, as to how to make the turkey not come out tasting like dried beef jerky. To make matters worse, hosting Thanksgiving at her place is a “family tradition” since the death of my mother-in-law who was a fabulous cook. Is there any solution to end this reign of culinary terror? — Trapped Dear Trapped Gravy and sides are the solution to all your problems. Stop at Depot Market, stock up on both and put them in a Sea

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Bags bag. How can she balk at that? Hopefully, she will serve them with the meal, but be prepared for her to stash them away for another time. Either way, you must suck it up. Go to your happy place when the turkey is carved and think happy thoughts of the turkey dinner you will be making the next day, complete with leftovers. And stop telling your sister-in-law she can’t cook; of course she’s resistant and obviously living in the shadow of her

mother’s legacy. That is really obnoxious on your part. You’re lucky she doesn’t slip a laxative into your cocktail. Dear Answer Lady I want to dye my hair blond but my husband is adamantly against it. I really want a new look, but I really, really do not want to be harangued everyday afterwards. Should I cave? — Wavering Dear Wavering To dye or not to dye? That is the question. Clearly, this is something you feel strongly about, so the Answer Lady encourages you to steel your resolve and go for it. However, it is not unreasonable for your husband to take umbrage at the thought of welcoming “another woman” into the house. You might both be pleasantly surprised with the results and, after all, it’s not permanent. BUT, for heaven’s sake do not do this yourself. The very thought of it makes the Answer Lady’s hair curl. Make an appointment at Accents on Beauty or Evolution and get it done properly.

NALA is a pretty girl with light green eyes, champagne coloring, and a bubbly personality to go along with it. She loves to chase squeaky toys and will bring them back and drop them! Nala is a student in the shelter’s training program so she has learned to relax in the crate, walk nicely on the leash, and wait politely for food — awwww.

«

LUCKY is a happy, friendly young lab-retriever mix. He is smart and full of energy, and he loves to go on long walks. Lucky loves playing fetch and will bring the ball back and sit nicely to fetch again; he’d be a great dog for active people. Lucky is also an excellent student in the shelter’s CLASS training program... very obedient!

«

DOMINO is a shy boy but he loves to play! He’d prefer a quiet home and may need slow introductions to new things (who doesn’t?). Domino likes other dogs but would rather be in a home with older kids because they’re a bit calmer and quieter. Won’t you let this cutie love you? You won’t be sorry!

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

PHYLLO was actually dropped off at the zoo, and he was so scared, he found a hiding place near the snake house. He was terrified when he was brought to the shelter, also, but he’s been warming up to life here. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t miss having a forever home. Phyllo is up to date on all vaccines, and the adoption fee is only $35.

«

BUGS came to the shelter with his brothers Elmer and Daffy. There were absolutely terrified, but have since gotten used to shelter life. They can be sweet cats once you get to know them, and give them just a little time to warm up. Spare some love for this guy (or, better yet, all of the sibling, and you’re heart will grow three sizes. $70.

«

WOODY, this little sweetheart of a cat, cannot wait to meet you. He loves to be pet, and just to prove it, he could purr for you all day long. If you are looking for a little bit of sunshine to brighten up your day, stop in and give this guy a second chance.

Bird Droppings

N

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ew Jersey Audubon’s Big Birding Festival has come and gone. So that’s the end of the birding season? No. Bird watching in Cape May spans the calendar year. In fact, much more could be done to bring birders to Caper May in winter. Several years ago The Cape May Bird Observatory initiated a bird festival in early November but some local businesses eager to take a little time off after an eight-month tourist season urged CMBO to reschedule the event for late October. This works for birders but it sells the Cape’s potential short. Fact is both hawk and seabird migration continue into December. And from January through March, the birding opportunities in Cape May excel. Birders from the Midwest and New England think a winter birding getaway weekend to Cape May is tantamount to a tropical birding vacation. So? Anyone up for a 12-month birding industry? The birds are here. The infrastructure in place. All we need is the packaging and promotion. Come March, winter

308 CAMBRIDGE CAPE MAY POINT One block to Lake Lily and 4 blocks to the beach is where you will find this two story cedar sided cutie. Plenty of storage and a great vacation home. $625,000

weary birders are already arriving to greet the first Cape May breeders. American Woodcock are courting, Pine and Yellowthroated Warblers establishing territories. In March Delaware Bay is packed with northbound Red-throated Loons. Then in April, songbird migrants begin moving in earnest. May birding in Cape May is just as exciting as September and October. If there is a slow period in the Cape May birding tourist calendar it is mid- June. But by June the traditional tourist season is revving up.

209 CAPE AVENUE CAPE MAY POINT Large 5 BR, 3.5 BA home 1400 Texas Avenue, Cape May completely redone with (609) 884-5005 • CoastlineRealty.com top of the line finishes inCarol A. So I ask again: Anyone care to ramp up a year round ecotourist industry based upon birding in Cape May? There is also a real potential to attract more European birders. Birding is immensely popular in the UK, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark, places that are pretty, cold, dark and relatively birdless in winter. Personally, I see Cape May becoming the planet’s top ecotourist destination and a tourist season that spans the calendar. The Europen potential aside, all the retiring baby-boomers are going to need something to do and some place to go. Why not birding and here? Birds are Cape May’s economic Golden Goose. The only way we can screw this up is to squander the natural resources that are the support base for the 350 species of breeding, wintering and migrating birds that regularly come here. Including the odd rare bird that may draw thousands of birders. Who will find more rare birds. Which will draw more birders. In other words a birding chain reaction. The only fallout is economic.
