Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
t’s that special time of year when you fill up the car with gas, drive an hour or so to the Hamilton Mall, pack yourself in amongst thousands of other desperate holiday shoppers, buy generic electronics, eat a snack at a nameless franchise, then drive the hour or so back home. Aaah, Christmas. Don’t you just love it? No, really, people, you don’t live in Oklahoma, or Misssouri or Egg Harbor. You don’t have to shop at the strip mall. You actually have access to a classic small town, one with a hardware store, lots of fine restaurants and an ever-improving stock of stores that sell the kind of quirky gifts that you should be giving at this time of year. Try and enjoy the ritual of Christmas shopping this year. Smell the roses while you browse, and put money into the local economy while you’re at it. And there are more opportunities than ever this year — the folks on the Washington Street Mall have got together to ensure that at least 30 stores will be open every single day until 8pm from now through December 23, to help with your holiday shopping. As a retailer (Exit Zero has stores on Sunset Boulevard and Beach Avenue), I can
BIRD IS THE WORD
tell you it’s a major commitment to stay open every day in the off-season. So how about you reward these local entrepreneurs by enjoying the very best of local shopping? I’ll bet you will be surprised at the quality and range of goodies that you will discover. Take a few minutes and look through these pages — there are gift ideas everywhere you look! Speaking of local entrepreneurs, I had the immense pleasure of co-hosting, with Curtis Bashaw and Jim Moffatt, a dinner for young business owners in the Congress Hall ballroom last Thursday. This was an event partly inspired by the
³
series of stories we ran on young business owners earlier this year. To cut a long story short, Exit Zero and Cape Resorts (owners of Congress Hall, Virginia Hotel, Rusty Nail, planet earth etc...) have launched an initiative that aims to recognize the work of the young entrepreneurs and sets out to support and inspire them as they make their considerable mark on this town. It was amazing to see so many cool and energetic young people gathering in one place. It’s not often I’m one of the oldest people in the room in Cape May, but it happened that night, I’m glad to say. So, yes, there were cars towed in the run-up to the West Cape May Christmas Parade. It’s a horrible thing to happen. But, as critical as I’ve been of Cape May Police Department in recent years, I think this town has, in the shape of Rob Sheehan, as caring and thoughtful a police chief as you could ever hope for. This was not a hit job. The fact is, the parade route had to be cleared — that the event had to be rescheduled for Sunday caused problems. If you genuinely feel you were towed through no fault of your own, contact the CMPD and they will be glad to help you.
