Ramblings From The Editor
L
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ast week I rambled on about how you should be doing your holiday shopping at local stores, instead of joining the hordes of sheep who head to the generic malls. Well, I enjoyed walking the walk (as well as talking the talk) last week. The wife and I took a tour of the Washington Street Mall and I was not disappointed. Bought a black felt hat and a watch (for me) from Good Scents, a ridiculously cool batch of soaps (for everyone on my Christmas list) from A Place on Earth, a beautifully made manbag (for the brother-in-law) from Galvanic, and a snazzy cardigan (for the mother-inlaw) at Cotton Company. I’ve also got my eye on goodies from Whale’s Tale, Pink, Casale’s, Bath Time, Cape May Wicker, Bird House of Cape May, Flying Fish and Cape May Honey Farm, to name a few. And then there’s the shopping mecca of West End Garage. My point is — there is some seriously good shopping to be had in Cape May, and I hope you take the opportunity to search it out. While doing that, grab some lunch or dinner at restaurants that surround the mall — such as The
BIRD IS THE WORD
Blue Pig Tavern, Ebbitt Room, Mad Batter, Oyster Bay, Pilot House, Tisha’s or Ugly Mug. In other words, make a day of it! If you haven’t had the good fortune to attend the annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, then you don’t know what you’re missing. I think I can confidently say this is the most exciting event on the Cape May winter calendar, but then, let’s face it, there’s not too much competition for that title in January or February. And, really, I don’t need to promote the event since it already has a hardcore following that ensures it’s a sellout.
³
But... if you have never been and you somehow are intrigued by the idea of 18thcentury Scottish poetry written by one of Britain’s most famous poets — the whole night is devoted to the memory of Robert Burns, who wrote, among many other songs and poems, “Auld Lang Syne” — then join us at the Ugly Mug on Thursday, January 22. This is one of my favorite nights of the year and I love that people travel from very far away to come to Cape May in the middle of January. You will be treated to the wonderful music of the Irish Pipe Brigade, Scottish poems read by me and other local dignitaries, plus folk music played by the talented, and ridiculously handsome, Jake Gyllenhaal... I mean, Chris Gillin-Schwartz. And I think we are also going to have a song or two performed by Barry Tischler. As for the food — you can choose from haggis, vegetarian haggis, or fish-n-chips. Tickets cost $35 and the proceeds will go, this year, to the Cape May Film Festival. Buy tickets online at www.ezstore.us or call us at 609-770-8479. But, really, do it quickly. This gig is a sellout every year.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
remember the day the UFO landed in Cape May like it was yesterday. Which in fact it was, right after my morning nap: that’s why I recall events so clearly. Though the anal probing has upset my digestion, so some details may be fuzzy. Now, don’t get me wrong: aliens are mostly welcome in this city. We were the site of the events that were later claimed to have taken place in Roswell, in order to throw UFO nuts off the trail. Really, we do not need those people here: they dress sloppily, take liberties on the free topup offers at cafes and sleep in their campervans instead of patronizing local hotels. We are way keener on Furries, as those folks are unfailingly polite, if a little odd. In fact we are planning to host the 2015 Furry Conference in the city, and will see some 20,000 adult-sized animal costumiers arriving for that extravaganza. What they get up to once night falls, mind you, is not something we will dwell on, and I recommend children and those with a sensitive constitution do not strat out of doors in the
evenings while it’s on. But things have been quiet these last few decades, what with military radar getting better, and people watching the skies with worry (I blame that docu-drama Independence Day for scaring the weak of mind: hardly any aliens have come to Cape May looking to carry off humans. Well, not too many, for sure. Certainly not more than a dozen. Each year.) So imagine my surprise when a Flying Saucer hummed down to land on the front lawn of The D’Catur Mansion, all bold as brass. Young Albert, caught by
surprise, scurried aboard the second the ramp started to hinge down. Ten minutes later he was ejected with no memory of recent events and a strange scar. He has been acting oddly since, and has taken to watching The Twilight Zone and writing odd mathematical formulae on the floor using dog food. Anyway, I stepped forward as Human Ambassador, and we began conversing using bright flashing lights and a tuba. I may have sounded a duff note, thus my intended: “Come to The Brown Room For Refreshments” came out as “Probe. Anal. Now.” There was some undignified scuffling, but a half hour later we were back on track, if an octave higher. Turns out all they wanted was to refill their fuel tanks (they use 90 percent seawater, 10 percent saltwater taffy) and collect a dozen humans for a special exhibit being planned for their “citizens of the stars” enclosure at the Rigel 7 zoo. Clearly I am too busy, so I gave them names. If you are reading this, I’m afraid you’ll be collected this evening. Chin up!

A
Gayle Stahlhuth of East Lynne Theater Company reviews “Exodus: Gods and Kings”
ds for Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings claim: “from the director of Gladiator.” And this director did give us Gladiator (2000)... as well as Thelma and Louise (1991), Alien (1979), and Blade Runner (1982) — all very different genres with characters to care about. For Exodus, what starts out as an epic that could have characters to cheer and cry for, ends up being taken over by 3-D special effects and a skewering of the original story. Christian Bale gives the role of Moses all he’s got, within the confines of the script and direction. Moses is portrayed at times as dazed and confused, which should give pause to all those Hebrews who followed him. Instead of winning them over with his own conviction that God has a plan, Moses gives the Hebrew slaves military training after they’ve had a full day of Egyptian monument building. Where did those slaves get the strength? And where were the Egyptians when the training was going on?
Ridley Scott directs Exodus: Gods and Kings There are a few moments when character does trump special effects. One is when Moses shows up at his wife’s doorstep with ALL of the freed slaves. His look, as he shrugs, is one of “I’ve brought a few friends home, hope you don’t mind.” Her look is “I don’t think we have enough food for dinner.” Now complete with his family, Moses is ready to lead them all to Canaan. In two previous Exodus epics, directors DW Griffiths and Cecile B. DeMille had their

unique ways to make the waters of the Red Sea part — so naturally Scott had to do it differently. Scott’s interpretation didn’t seem as grand, somehow, as I thought he’d do it. Although coming in around two-anda-half hours, perhaps Exodus: Gods and Kings should have been longer. Were there scenes cut that gave actors a chance to fully inhabit the roles? Will we be seeing “a Ridley Scott director’s cut” in a few years that lasts four hours? Somehow, I wouldn’t be surprised. By now, readers are probably aware of the uproar by many that Caucasians were cast in roles that should have been portrayed by those with African and Middle-Eastern roots. Part of Scott’s incentive had to do with the need for big names to get a big film produced. Would patrons see a film produced and directed by Ridley Scott with lesser-known actors in the lead roles? I, for one, would. On the whole, I am an admirer of Ridley Scott. Exodus: Gods and Kings is not his best film, but look at what he has produced and directed. And I still look forward to the next Ridley Scott film.

ike many Christmas traditions, the exchange of gifts on December 25 owes a lot to the Victorians. Sure, the Three Wise Men started things with gifts for the infant Jesus, but after that, presents were not a big part of the holiday. Families exchanged handmade gifts on New Year’s Day — the making of such presents kept people amused during long winters — but it wasn’t until the 18th century that Christmas gift giving really took off. Early in the century, the gifts were small — candies, nuts and fruit hung on the tree. Gifts gradually got larger and more expensive. They were too heavy to be hung on the tree and had to be placed underneath. By the end of Victoria’s reign, store-bought gifts joined the homemade ones. Santa might leave building blocks, tin soldiers, dolls, rocking horses, tops or jigsaw puzzles under the tree. If you’re helping Santa this year, you can find lots of great gifts in Cape May. For whimsy, try Whale’s Tale, where elegant art pieces mix with unusual toys and ornaments. Need a hostess gift? Just for Laughs will have the perfect comic dish towel to wrap around a bottle of fancy olive oil from the Cape May Olive

Add it to something from Tea by the Sea for a lovely gift basket. Shopping for jewelry? Artisan’s Alcove on Lafayette Street has estate jewelry and unique antique charms, like a tiny moveable bicycle pump, as well as “upcycled” pieces — old stones in new settings. Browse Henry’s Gifts, or Patricia Jackson Jewelers. Try Wanderlust for beach decor. The birder in your life may want something from the Cape May Bird Observatory. If you can’t get to Cape May, consider shopping online. The Sunset Beach Shop has a nice selection, and the Original Fudge Kitchen lets you ship tasty treats anywhere. For art, consider Gallery D’May, SOMA, or the Washington Street Gallery. The Cape May Artists’ Cooperative on Sunset Boulevard has jewelry, wood products, purses, photos, paintings, and sculptures, along with masks and mermaids in pieces small and large. And, don’t forget the Exit Zero Store for snuggly hoodies, or books, or car magnets. Cape May Wicker has decorations, or baskets to hold all your goodies.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I love to play golf and joined a foursome which includes my girlfriend’s father — let’s call him Ted. They like to play for money and that is fine — I’m pretty good — but I suspect that Ted’s actual handicap is lower than the one posted at the club, which gives him a huge advantage. This process is commonly called sandbagging. I’m a little tired of handing over cash to this guy every week and wonder what I can do about it and still keep my girlfriend. — Sandbagged Dear Sandbagged We call that cheating in the non-golfing world. Find yourself another foursome — tell Ted you needed to play on another day and at another time. Or start your own
sandbagging tally and beat him at his own game. What’s he going to do? Accuse you of cheating better than he? And, after you clean his clock on the golf course a couple of times, move on to another foursome. By no means discuss this with your girlfriend — unless she brings it up and even then, don’t make a big deal of it. In reality, he will probably invite you into his circle of hustlers, and then you can decide which side of the golf course you want to play on. In the meantime, make sure to pop into Cape May
National and buy yourself a set of stellar clubs. Nothing says “game on” like a shiny new set of clubs. Dear Answer Lady My daughter-in-law is a first-class hypochondriac. My husband and I have looked upon this with amusement over the years but now that our granddaughter is approaching two, we are concerned that she is passing her phobias on. Is there anything we can do? — Hypo Concerned Dear Hypo Concerned The Answer Lady does not know how much time you spend with your granddaughter, but would advise that whenever you are in her company or her mother’s, you strongly stress the importance of an old adage the Answer lady embraces: “A healthy mind equals a healthy body. It’s a fine line you must tread, but try to stay positive whenever health issues are brought up and stress the importance of preventative medicine. Stop in at Good Scents and buy some inspirational books to keep the good vibes flowing and rid them of the bad juju.

ROXY is an awesome American Staffordshire Terrier. She has been at the shelter for over two years through no fault of her own — she just gets overlooked because she’s a wee bit older. Although Roxy does not like cats, she’s good with other dogs and would be happy to sit by your side... low maintenance and loving!
«
GUCCI is a happy, friendly girl who loves to play fetch. She was brought to the shelter after being abandoned outside of a police station, but that didn’t spoil her sweet character. She is smart and loves to work with people, and she excels in the shelter’s Canine Life and Social Skills (CLASS) training program. Good on leash!
«
BUSTER had the same owner for eight years, but the man lost his home and couldn’t keep his pet. Now Buster is nine, and he loves other dogs and cats, but he especially loves people — old, young, rich, poor, smiley, grumpy. He even likes baths (can you tell this is a happy dog?!). Bonus: he’s very well-behaved and well-trained.

BABYDOLL is a sweet girl whose previous owner fell ill. So she’s had a tough break, but she sure knows what she wants and how she wants it! This is a cat who especially enjoys sitting with people somewhere cozy and relaxed... maybe you could be the lucky human to sit with her?
«
RUSS is a charming older boy who is very relaxed; he just enjoys snuggling. He came to the shelter after his owner had to go into a nursing home, and Russ sure misses being a part of a forever home. If you’re over 62 years old, you can take Russ home for free, as part of the shelter’s Seniors-for-Seniors program.

BOO is a loving guy who loves to play. We know you’re likely making resolutions to hit the gym or lose 10 pounds, but why not resolve to make a new friend, and help out a deserving animal in the process. If that sounds good to you, Boo’s your man. Er, cat.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
t was a bitterly cold morning. So I was surprised not to see my bird feeders swarming with birds. The reason was plain to see. There, perched in the tree that supports my two primary feeders, was a young, hungry Cooper’s hawk. If you are among the 47 million Americans who feed birds, you are familiar with bird-catching hawks like Cooper’s. It’s only natural. Bird-eating hawks go where the birds are. While I don’t mind the hawk catching the occasional starling or mourning dove, I do take umbrage at the bird shutting down my backyard feeding station. The solution? Place a few feeders well away from the hawk’s happy hunting grounds. But I’m not stupid, I know the hawk will adapt to the new situation. Another defensive measure would be to build a brush pile near the feeders — a place small birds can enjoy a measure of safety while waiting for an open perch at the feeder. Retired Christmas trees make a great foundation for a brush pile. Plan ahead. The one thing you will not be able to do is make

the hawk disappear. It is a professional bird of prey. For those who anguish about causing birds to be killed as a result of your bird feeding efforts, the response is don’t. By feeding birds in your backyard you are not causing them to be killed, you are causing them to be killed where you will see them. The Cooper’s hawk is going to take two birds a day someplace or another. We typically have two Cooper’s hawks working our feeders — a young male and an adult female. We also used to be plagued by

pigeons. No longer. The adult female hawk is a real ace at dispatching pigeons. Her strategy is to sit in a tree two blocks away and wait for birds to start foraging. Then, using trees and our fence for cover, she flies to intercept, hoping some blue jay doesn’t spot her and raise an alarm. It’s a very good strategy. So if you are plagued by bird-catching hawks, try spacing your feeders, building a brush pile and most of all stop thinking of the hawk as a problem. It’s really just one more bird coming to your feeder. One that gets its seed second hand. You can also count on your feeder regulars to start keeping different schedules than your bird catching hawk. Cooper’s hawks most often hunt at dawn. The young hawk’s mid-morning presence and proximity attested to his lack of experience. The adult was probably roosting in a comfortable conifer digesting a pigeon or mourning dove. That’s how it got to be an adult — top prize for hawks that devise a winning strategy in the old predator/prey game. Good luck, kid.
