Ramblings From The Editors

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

t was Albert Einstein who apparently said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I think about this every time I see that Peter Nero and the Philly Pops are booked to play Cape May Convention Hall. Not that the act of booking Peter Nero is insane — he’s an experienced and accomplished performer. But I’m pretty certain the city lost a fortune when they booked him to open Convention Hall in 2012 (I can only be “pretty” certain because the city have never been forthcoming about the bottom line). And I doubt the outcome was different when Nero played in 2013 and 2014. But here we go again... the city is booking Peter Nero this year, and paying $62,500 for the privilege. That would require the city to net around $80 per ticket to break even. Which just isn’t going to happen. Then again, the hall has mysteriously filled up for previous Nero concerts, even though that wasn’t because every ticket was bought by spectators. The city has ways of making those tickets disappear. I was told by a city employee that Mayor Ed Mahaney bought, a day or two before the 2012

BIRD

IS THE WORD A CAPE MAY CARTOON

event, a large batch of tickets. You could say that means he cares about the city. But you could also say that he should have learned, there and then, that Peter Nero isn’t a viable act for making money for the city. The marketing of Convention Hall has been a disaster from the get-go. The city has never allowed an experienced events marketing professional to get in there and do what those kinds of people do. Which is attract popular performers at affordable prices and book other events and exhibitions that will make money. Last month, a dance act that reportedly

cost the city $12,000 to book was such a flop that the city refunded the few tickets that were sold and made the event free. Then there was the farce of the April 4 Deana Martin concert, canceled because of “weather-related issues.” There were absolutely NO issues with the weather that weekend. What’s also galling is that the city does little to no promotion locally. We’ve never been asked to run a single ad in Exit Zero and we rarely receive a press release featuring Convention Hall events. Insane, right? I realize I will never be on Mayor Mahaney or City Manager Bruce MacLeod’s Christmas card list, but the fact that they don’t share their marketing with the most popular publication in the area is nuts. Mind you, I don’t think the other publications receive info on upcoming events either. (I should state one caveat — a few weeks ago, Bruce did hand me a poster promoting the aforementioned dance event. Too little, too late, though.) The city is in the process of hiring someone to lead Convention Hall. Trouble is, that hire will probably be made by Messrs Mahaney and MacLeod — and they’ve shown how much they know about this kind of thing.

Susan Tischler reports on the happenings from the Cape May City Council meetings

ye-bye to boring, sparsely attended council meetings. Hello to sparks, insults and discontent. One clue that sparks were going to fly at the 1pm April 7 work session was the gathering of an obviously disgruntled but comparatively small audience. We also got to say hi to newly sworn-in councilman Jack Wichterman, who no doubt thought he had retired from politics when he chose not to run in November. However, he got the nod April 1 from his fellow council members when they approved his appointment to replace Jerry Inderwies until November. At first glance, the agenda seemed innocuous. Then the eye scrolled down to Resolution 94, authorizing the hiring of legal defense for city officials and employees. Then there is everyone’s favorite — the public portion. Well, it may not be council’s favorite. On this afternoon, you could feel the gathered were chomping at the bit waiting for their turn at the mic. Also interesting was the fact that, in the absence of City Manager Bruce MacLeod, who was on vacation, all council eyes turned to City

Solicitor Tony Monzo for such mundane facts as why the Deana Martin concert was cancelled Saturday, April 4. He was, of course, unable to answer that. And the mystery of the cancellation, attributed in the Press of AC to “weatherrelated” issues, still eludes us. What weather would that be? Monsoon? Anyway… Before the resolutions were passed, Jerry Gaffney started the grilling. He repeatedly asked about the details regarding the hiring of legal council to defend city employees who will be deposed by the Cape May County prosecutor’s office in regard to what began as an administrative investigation into comp time accrued

by Lieutenant Chuck Lear and which led to the demotion of Police Chief Rob Sheehan. Other audience members asked why the employees couldn’t use their own attorney or a public defender. Monzo explained that the measure is simply to allow employees legal counsel while they are being questioned. They are not charged with anything, making a public defender inappropriate. Plus, individual legal counsel would rack up even larger bills and not provide consistent legal advice in the matter. One employee, among the reportedly four who will be deposed, has been interviewed by the prosecutor’s office and became uncomfortable during questioning, hence the call for the resolution. No dollar amount was approved because, Monzo said, it is “not an open checkbook.” The resolution passed unanimously, despite other audience members singling out council members Shaine Meier and Bea Pessagno, urging them to vote against the resolution. Meier said, “It is part of my job to be

INSIDE CITY HALL CONTINUED FROM PAGE 35 your voice, whether you are here or not. I believe in taking care of our own. If they [employees] feel they need legal representation, I owe it to them to protect them.” Pessagno said that being questioned “can be quite an intimidating thing” and she did not think it was fair that the employees had to bear the financial burden of legal counsel, reminding those opposed to the resolution that “we did not start this” but that council was working to resolve it. In the public portion of the meeting, Anita deSatnick urged council to act on hiring more EMTs and singled out Pessagno, Deputy Mayor Terri Swain and Mayor Ed Mahaney, soliciting their opinion. All three voted for the budget without the addition of $75,000 which the city gained with the retirement of Chief Inderwies last year. Pessagno has repeatedly said she did not want a “band aid” fix. The mayor said he wanted changes to be comprehensive including improvements to the facility, equipment as well as added personnel. DeSatnick concluded that council’s recent approval of the budget without the added monies for the fire department meant that they were “putting money before safety.” John Van der Vaarst, who came in fourth out of five candidates in the November election, rose to the podium to say, among other things, that even though he told Bruce MacLeod that he didn’t want the job of councilman to replace the vacated seat of Inderwies, “that was correct on the surface.” He said he made the statement because he was never asked to serve and “I don’t go where I’m not invited.” In contrast, Jack Wichterman made it publicly clear that he would serve if asked. It is safe to say that Inderwies and the mayor have not kissed and made up since Inderwies’ explosive departure from council. Inderwies asked City Clerk Louise Cummiskey to read Resolution 93 approving an agreement between

Encore Series, the Philly Pops and the City of Cape May, hiring the Pops for a September gig at a cost of $62,500. Inderwies said in approving the resolution the mayor left out “an important component — the cost, and you’ve done that before.” He asked the mayor if last year’s Philly Pops concert was sold out. It was not. He then asked if free tickets were given to city employees. The mayor said that he and the deputy mayor bought tickets for the concert and did make them available to individuals. Inderwies asked Monzo if giving free tickets to city employees was illegal. Monzo replied it was not, because the city was not giving away tickets — two private citizens were. Then a back and forth ensued. Inderwies accused the mayor of playing with the truth. The mayor said that was his opinion. Jerry said it was “everyone’s opinion.” The mayor suggested otherwise. Pessagno and the mayor said that the Pops concert is different becaise the costs of it are partly defrayed by sponsorships. The ratio of those costs was not offered. Probably the most emotional part of the meeting was the impassioned words of former Chief Bob Boyd, who spoke in support of Rob Sheehan. Boyd maintained that the “entire issue is directly the responsibility and the failure of the city administrator,” Bruce MacLeod. Boyd said, “You’ve already done enough damage to the police department that it will take years to repair.” Boyd said he lived through the same thing in the 1980s when then City Manager Fred Coldren and then Chief Financial Officer Bruce MacLeod were under a cloud of scrutiny. “Guilty before tried,” said Boyd of that situation. He said he found the current situation “unconscionable,” “unfair and unwarranted.” The message, he said, to the police department is “do your job, work hard, try to do the best you can for this city and your fellow officers and you too will be rewarded with what happened to Chief Sheehan.”

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

have watched that “Furious” cinematic motor racing documentary, and am much pleased. The impression given by whichever of my frenzied great-greatgrandchildren I was forced to accompany to the cinema (they all look rather similar, and I tend to tune our their high pitched voices) was that this was the latest in a longish series of such ilms to feature a variety of bald, muscular and not very hetereosexual men with deep voices and an unexpected ability to be punched in the head without suffering any ill effects. I think there was more, but really, I was so excited by the fast cars that I paid no attention. I was reminded of the days when Cape May had its own famous international auto racing event. It was the irst in the United States, and came about when Henry Ford visisted town with a dozen of the irst Model Ts to be made, to test them here. “A test!?!” I had blurted scornfully in the Brown Room. “Dear boy, we need a RACE!”. Ford was a blowhard of the greatest magnitude and hated to lose face, so was forced thru

gritted teeth to agree. We quickly enlisted some other drinkers — Ernie Hemingway, Amela Earhart, Leon Trotsky, Dorothy Parker, Jimmy Hoffa and Fatty Arbuckle among others — and toasted the next morning’s contest with far too many malts. Come 8am, there we were on the lawn of Congress Hall, motors running. I was dressed in the inest tweed, with the Young Albert beside me in his racing goggles. We had no starter as such, so Ernie leaned from the window of his motor car and ired his elephant gun in the air, and off we went. Well, of

most of us went: Ernie had not aimed entirely in the air and shot Jimmy Hoffa stone cold dead (Jimmy and his car were later rolled off the beach at The Point, and sometimes at low tide, you can hear the horn tooting forlornly). The remaining 11 raced off along beach at a staggering 40 miles per hour, bystanders sucked off their feet by the wind we created. Within a few yards, Fatty’s engine caught ire and he executed a drift turn and crashed through the wall into Uncle Bill’s, which seemed to suit him ine. By the time we were half way along Beach, we were tightly bunched, so Young Albert took it upon himself to leap into Ernie’s car and savage him. All too soon, the end of Beach came into sight, and I was the only one who thought to stamp on the brake and manage the turn onto Wilmington. That Braggart Ford and all the others motored over the dunes and collided with our famed wooden Elephant, which the resulting conflagration destroyed. I was horriied at the loss of history and life, but thought it worth it to win. Which is, I think, the Cape May spirit.

Y

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, girls’ getaways!

ou’re a hard-working woman. At the office, you hold noses to grindstones. At home, you control bedtime and timeouts. You don’t need a family vacation. You need to get away to Cape May with your friends. Friendship is good for you. Think about the friend who made you laugh when your prom date was mean, or helped paint the kitchen, or talked you into that 5K, or held your hand and said everything would be alright, then held tighter when it wasn’t. The Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that the more friends women have, the less likely they are to become physically debilitated as they age. Friends can reduce blood pressure and ease depression. Time with friends reduces stress and encourages exercise. But friendships need time, attention and in-person connection. What better place to get together than Cape May? What better time than the Girlfriend’s Getaway Weekend, April 17-19, presented by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humani-

ties (MAC)? Are you a crafty crew? Start with “Hats Off to the Ladies!” at the Carriage House Cafe and Tearoom at the Physick Estate at 3 p.m. Friday. This hat-making demonstration, presented by Cape Winds Florist, includes a “round of “Who said that?” focusing on famous women. Hats are required, and there will be prizes for the biggest, most outrageous and cutest. Tickets are $36. Partake in the “Chocolate Lover’s Feast” at 1 p.m. Saturday, featuring nine courses of chocolate at the Blue Rose Inn, $35. Or try “Brunch, Bingo and Lace” on

Sunday at the Inn of Cape May. Play bingo as you enjoy a fashion show presented by Lace Silhouettes and the Cotton Company. Tickets are $25. Enjoy an afternoon tea and lecture on “Bustles to Bras” at 2pm that same day and learn the social and historical underpinnings of clothing. Learn more at capemaymac.org or by calling 609-8845404 or 800-275-4278. In addition to the MAC events, there are other ways to have fun with your friends. Join the Earth Day 5K at the Cape May County Park on Saturday, April 18. Registration, $20, begins at 7am. The race begins at 8:30. All proceeds benefit the Cape May County Park and Zoo Trust Fund. Visit the new art exhibition at SOMA NewArt Gallery, 31 Perry Street, featuring regional artists Terri Amig, Harriett Sosson, and Carol King Hood. Shop the Washington Street Mall. Treat yourself to a leisurely dinner at one of Cape May’s fine restaurants. Book a spa treatment. Get up early and explore the beach. And stay up late rediscovering your giggle.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I recently visited my daughter, her husband and their toddler and I was shocked at the time they spend playing video games, texting and watching television. The game playing went on even when we were out to dinner. I don’t want to be a nag, but I feel they are letting life pass them by, especially the young life in their care now. What should I do? — Plugged up Dear Plugged Ahh the Answer Lady feels your pain. She suggests two courses of action. One: while you are there, encourage activities which necessitate going outside, citing, quite rightly, concern for the toddler. She needs physical exercise and lots of it. Remind them of their own childhoods,

Wise answers to perplexing questions

which no doubt included a lot of playtime outside. Secondly, go to Kaleidoscope and buy the book Unplugged and send it to them. It is a guidebook on how to unplug one day a week. Remind them also to enjoy this time with their young child and look at life the way little people do — with awe. Dear Answer Lady Every time I go into my 14-year-old daughter’s room to clean, I see her diary on the desk and am so tempted to open it and

read it. Thus far, I’ve resisted. Would I be wrong to read it? Is this betraying a trust? She could have hid the diary. I wouldn’t even know it existed had I not seen it. Once I cross this line, do I then start checking her text messages when she’s in the shower? — One Step Over the Line Dear Overstep First of all, why are YOU cleaning your daughter’s room? She should be doing that. But. No, you would not be wrong. It is not betraying a trust. She’s not your spouse. She’s your daughter and you are responsible for her well being while she is still a minor. I would say this: if her behavior does not warrant closer scrutiny, you might want to hold off on the spying, but should her behavior start to raise eyebrows... go for it. Meanwhile, appease your obviously guilt-ridden conscience and take her out on a girl’s weekend of shopping. West End Garage would be a great place to start. Then, pop down to the Carriage House at the Emlen Physick Estate for a mommy daughter tea.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

GINNY is a sweet, loveable girl who loves to snuggle and play. Because she loves everyone, she’d make a great family pet... and housebroken! Cute and knows where to poop... that’s always a winning combination.

«

FRANKIE would be thrilled for the opportunity to keep up with your active lifestyle. He loves to play, especially with squeaky toys, and he’d prefer a home with older kids and no cats. But Frankie loves other dogs... and he’ll love you, too.

«

DASH is well-mannered and even knows some obedience commands. He is a student in the shelter’s training program, where he’s learning to walk nicely on leash. Dash loves playing fetch, and is a-okay with a crate; crate-trained dogs often make an easier transition to a new home.

BLUSH — on the left — loves to meet new people. She is a very sweet, playful girl who needs a home, preferably with her brother Mascato (on the right). He’s pretty exceptional himself.

RALPH is three years old. He’s a little shy but once you get to know him, he warms right up. Ralph was found abandoned in a carrier at a business. The shelter was kind enough to pick him up and care for him, but he deserves a forever home.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

W

oman in Gold tells the true story of the rightful owner of one of the world’s most famous paintings. During World War II, Maria Altmann (played by Helen Mirren) escaped Nazi-occupied Vienna. Her sister was waiting for her in the United States. She left her mother and father behind, and they died before the war ended. Her family also left behind a signiicant collection of artwork. One of the paintings, “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I” from renowned painter Gustav Klimt, was in that collection. Upon the death of her sister, Maria renews a vow to search for the documentation that will prove her family’s ownership of the Klimt work. The value: $100 million. She enlists the help of a young and struggling lawyer, Randy Schoenberg (played by Ryan Reynolds). He is grandson of the Schoenberg (the composer), and he has a heritage in Austria as well. The journey to justice is a long one with many obstacles, including the Austrian

Woman in Gold is “not Helen Mirren gold, but it’s still Mirren,” says our guy Tom. government and bureaucrats who want only to keep their beloved “Woman in Gold” (a name they bestowed upon the piece during the war). Never mind that it was illegally coniscated. The ilm does not rely on f lashback, a go-to device for many ilms that have modern and past elements to them. Some of that jumping back and forth can be jarring, so much so I get car sick…. but not so here. Mirren and Reynolds are charming together, bridging a generational gap

with splendid acting that transcends time. Reynolds has always been a little too GQ for me to take seriously (c’mon, Green Lantern, enough said), so when I say I didn’t mind him in this role that’s big news. Bottom line here is that I wanted there to be more to this ilm. It was very much worth watching, but with this compelling a story I should have felt it more. There are a number of stories (both ictional and historical representations) that are based on Nazi pilferage of classic artwork. This one had potential, and because it starred Mirren I can’t completely pan it. Still, I wanted more…I don’t know… justice for the story. You know the movie doesn’t hit its mark when it clocks in at less than 70 minutes and the viewers is left feeling like it lasted more than two hours. There is so much dragging, I wonder if there wasn’t enough story to make this work as a feature. But there is enough story there... so what gives? This isn’t Mirren gold, but it’s still Mirren. I’m in.

Bird Droppings

D

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

on’t let the weather determine whether you go birding or not. The great thing about Cape May is that, no matter what the conditions, there will always be birds. On my recent Monday morning ield trip in South Cape May, rain precluded our usual two-hour walk. Cancel? No. Head on over to Sunset Beach. Get under shelter and enjoy the parade of hundreds of sea ducks migrating by. Along with dozens of Red-throated Loons and scores of Northern Gannet. We stayed dry, had an bird-illed morning and marveled, once again, at the bounty of Cape May. Yes, I realize birders have a well earned reputation for parading around in the rain. Given reason or need we do bird in the rain. But birders enjoy staying warm and dry as much as the next person. In Cape May you can often have comfort and birds, too. Remember this truism: weather doesn’t determine whether there will be birds, it determines what kind of birds and where they will be. The way to go wrong is to decide not to attend the walk because of weather.

So if you are planning on going on a bird ield trip and you hear rain on the roof, don’t go back to sleep. Get out for a great morning’s birding with leaders who know how to produce a memorable outing, in relative comfort even if you don’t own the latest and greatest in rain gear. Bad weather often precipitates great birding. One Spring while birding on the coast of Alaska I watched thousands of seabirds and hundreds of hawks migrating in a daylong sleet storm. Why were the birds active?

A combination of bad hormones and their inish line in sight. What was I doing standing out in the sleet? Actually I was standing under the shelter on a spruce forest and my tent offered scant comfort. My sleeping bag was sodden so I igured, if I was going to be wet and cold I might as well see birds. So no matter what the weather is, never turn your back on a bird walk in Cape May. Trust your leaders to do the best they can with whatever hand Ma Nature is dealing. Often enough it is a very good hand. In Cape May, the odds are always stacked in your favor. And after the walk, just think of how good that cup of coffee is going to taste. By the second cup you’ may even have feeling back in your ingers. The way Arctic breeders like Redthroated loon igure it. The worst weather in Cape May is what they call a “nice day” on the North Slope of Alaska, which is where all these loons will be if you wait until warm weather to try and see them. Which is to say you will not. By mid-May the loons, waterfowl and gannets will be long gone.
