Ramblings From The Editors

T

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

he appearance of a report from New Jersey’s State Comptroller caused a brief ripple of excitement last week. It was relevant to Cape May because it stated that comp time was a violation of state law. You’ll likely know that comp time is the reason why Rob Sheehan, Cape May’s Chief of Police, was demoted in March. I’m not sure how the report, which was released a year ago, found its way into a Press of Atlantic City story last week. But I was curious to see a quote in that story from Cape May Solicitor Tony Monzo, who said that the furore over Sheehan was not the real issue. That, he said, was comp time. That’s pretty funny. Yes, the abuse of comp time is a serious matter. But does anyone with their head screwed on think that City Manager Bruce MacLeod and Mayor Ed Mahaney were unaware that the police department (and, I’m told, other departments) were contravening state law by continuing to use comp time? As I’ve said before, if MacLeod did NOT know, then he’s guilty of extreme incompetence. So, if Monzo is saying that comp time is the real issue, perhaps he might explain why his bosses allowed this to go on for so long.

BIRD

IS THE WORD A CAPE MAY CARTOON

In any event, to many (likely most) people in town, the real issue IS the demotion of Sheehan. And this seems as good a time as any to reiterate something I’ve been at pains to explain before. It deeply frustrates me when I hear members of the city council say they will vote to give Sheehan his job back if he is exonerated by an investigation being conducted by Cape May County’s Prosecutor’s Office. Again… Sheehan will NOT be exonerated by the county because he is NOT under investigation by them. The only reason the county is holding an investigation is because Sheehan

called for it, based on some strange things that he found in a report that the city commissioned into the comp time fiasco. That report was led by James Fallon, a retired state trooper who told the city that former Chief of Police Diane Sorantino refused to cooperate with his investigation. Except (as I reported before), Major Fallon called the wrong Diane Sorantino — he spoke to her cousin. This might tell you something about the credibility of Fallon’s report. By the way, I filed a rightto-know request with the city, asking how much Fallon’s report cost. I was told that no invoice existed. Do you believe that someone who began an investigation last October still hasn’t asked to be paid? More to follow on this when the city finally decides to tell its taxpayers, how it’s spending their money. I want to pass my condolences on to the family and friends of Donna Laudeman, who has died at the age of 61. Donna worked her whole adult life at the family’s Lobster House restaurant. In lieu of flowers, make a donation in Donna’s name to the Community Food Closet of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street — or to Animal Outreach, 600 Park Blvd, West Cape May. Rest in peace...

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I saw the damndest thing when walking along the beach the other day. There we were, Young Albert and I, me strolling along in my usual louche but somehow still indubitably masculine fashion, and Albert scurrying back and forth looking for living things to make not living any more, when what did we see but a gaggle of escaped lunatics and a half submerged piano. I admit, I jumped to some conclusions that on reflection were perhaps not 100 percent accurate: (a) that the piano was the one from the sunken ballroom of the Concrete Ship, (b) this shabby gang were pirates and (c) Something needed to be done, and fast. Well, I am a man of action, and the Late Mrs D used to say I tended not merely to act before I thought, but instead of thinking. So I whisltled to Albert our special “let slip the Yorkshire Terriers of war” signal, and raised my silver-topped walking cane above my head and in I went. There were maybe a dozen of them, some of the younger fools seated atop the piano, and the rest apparently making lithographs of them, possibly to hang

on the wall of their pirate cave as proof of their violent ways. The chief pirate seemed to be a brawny Scotchman, who seemed vaguely familiar (looking back, I think he was that silver screen star Gerard Butler, playing a man gone to seed), and with him was an extravagantly bearded sidekick who had the attention to detail to also wear a pirate bandana on his head. I immediately struck out at Gerry Butler, landing a terrible blow across his bare red shoulders, eliciting a cry of “Ma sunburn! Ai-yaa!” as Albert set about the rascals on

the piano, who scattered, dropping an array of musical instruments they had looted from elsewhere. The bearded pirate turned on me, as if to fight, then when he saw my cane describe a glittering deadly arc in the air, he turned tail, shouting: “Not my hands! They’re my fortune!” in very un-piratical manner. Once they were routed, I took stock, gathering up their loot and coming to the conclusion that perhaps they were not actual pirates, but in fact “creative hipsters”, a tribe we have been seeing quite a lot of lately, with their reclaimed driftwood furniture, a fondness for hessian bags and a tendency to drink alcohol from Mason jars. I am fairly sure that they were shooting a movie, and that I had injured the male lead, and possibly maimed the director’s hands. Ah well: as the great Cecil B used to say when shooting his epics in Cape May: “If you can’t stand the heat, I’ll punch you in the head!”. He was full of such gems, was Cecil, and I must remember to publish them, perhaps with a hemp cover for the hipsters. Possibly this very newspaper will print excerpts.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrate spring!

o you need an excuse to come to Cape May in the springtime? The sun is shining, daffodils are nodding, and birds are singing. It’s the time of year you’d like to capture in your memory, but you just can’t look at everything hard enough. That makes it the perfect time to learn more about a painter who captured our lovely town’s essence — see the work of Alice Steer Wilson at the Carriage House Gallery. Alice Steer Wilson was an award-winning artist known as “Mrs. Cape May” to the neighbors who watched her paint. In a variety of media, she worked to capture the town’s magic, “leaving out what was boring and exaggerating what I liked.” Born in Ohio in 1926, Wilson spent summers on Long Island Sound. She trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and painted in Cape May from the 1960s to her death in 2001. The exhibit, LIGHT, PARTICULARLY: Alice Steer Wilson’s Cape May, focuses on “Cape May’s dynamic period” and features works from the book of the

same name by Janice Wilson Stridick. It opens at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, on April 24 and runs through November 1. Admission is free, and the gallery is wheelchair accessible. The artist’s daughter and son-in-law, Janice Wilson Stridick and Paul Stridick, lead a related event on April 25 at 10am; The Light, Particularly Walking Tour: An Artist’s View of Cape May will take walkers to various sites that were the subject of Wilson’s paintings and give behind the scenes insight into her work. Tickets are $15 and

reservations are required. Call 609-8845404 for more information. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head over to Cape May Ferry Terminal to celebrate the “bounty of Cape May’s agriculture, viniculture, and aquaculture.” Cape May Forum presents “Wine & Oysters: Growing on the Garden State,” featuring tastings and cooking demonstrations from 9am to 4pm. Tickets are $50 and include lunch. Call 609-770-2626 or visit CapeMayForum.org for more information. Then it’s time to do your part to keep Cape May beautiful. All that marvelous spring light may reveal lots of work to be done in your Cape May home. Head to Swain’s for ant traps and dust cloths to whisk away the spider webs of winter. Stop by the Nature Center for bird seed to welcome back the flock. Pick up a few native plants to add color to your yard. Stock the pantry and the liquor cabinet for spring parties. Order takeout and enjoy in your clean house, or cut the work load altoghter by calling a cleaning service like Gofers.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I visit my parents who are in their seventies several times over the summer months and as often as I can in the off season. Here’s the problem. My bedroom is right next to theirs and every time I sleep over, I can hear them having sex. I think they might even plan it that way so I can see or hear how much I’m missing not being married. Should I say something to them? I certainly don’t get any sleep at night... the bed posts bang against the wall. — Sleepless In Cape May Dear Sleepless Short of flushing the Viagra tablets down the toilet, the Answer Lady is hard pressed to find a solution to this dilemma. One way to deal with it is to amp up the vol-

ume on the television, if there is one. If not, get a boom box and pump up the volume with every bang. However, if their goal is to call attention to their still vital marriage, better to play it low key, Say nothing and bring your iPod and earplugs. One suggestion, you might want to wear them down, so they are too pooped to schtup. A nice round of golf at Cape May National, followed by a big meal and some red wine at Lucky Bones restaurant just might do the trick.

Dear Answer Lady My Italian mother-in-law is an excellent cook, but I’m not too shabby myself. My husband is one of five brothers and each of us takes a turn hosting a holiday. Mine is always Easter and I am happy to share the kitchen with my mother-in-law, who typically arrives on Friday to help cook the Sunday feast. The problem is she takes over, to the point that when I sliced the carrots for the vegetable salad, she refused to use them, maintaining they were “too thick.” She stood at the front door waiting for my husband to come home so he could go out and buy fresh carrots. What to do? — Seething In Cape May Point Dear Seething You’ll never win this and you are outnumbered. One solution is to make sure you always have a signature dish of your own on the table alongside Mom’s. Secondly, go to Love the Cook and find some nifty kitchen gadget that you will amuse you both to try and use. Third, drink large quantities of wine while cooking.

BEA and her son Smokey were both surrendered to the local shelter through no fault of their own. While the shelter employees love them and will be sorry to see them go, the workers need these cats to get adopted so they can help other kittens in need. The Movie Column

By Dottie Knapp of Cape May Film Society

I

t’s April, the middle of the week, and my birthday — so what’s it gonna be? Furious 7 or Cinderella? I chose Cinderella. You know the story, and this movie follows the narrative faithfully. This caused me to re-think my choice. You see, I have musophobia (fear of mice). This new version has all the Disney mice — no not Mickey and Minnie — Gus and Jaq and others. The animated Disney version of 1950 was the first movie I remember going to, and those mice didn’t bother me at all. In this live action retelling, I had to peek through my fingers (like you did as a child to watch horror films) every time Cinderella was having a conversation with the tiny creatures, except maybe for Gus. Once I convinced myself that the mice were animatronics, I could watch the movie with both eyes and stop hyperventilating. At that point, I could appreciate the portrayal of Cinderella by Lilly James (Lady Rose in Downton Abbey). Kenneth Branagh didn’t mess with the

Cinderella is still as magical as ever, says our girl Dottie story at all; he used the 1950 version that was based on the 1697 fairy tale by Charles Perrault — not the 19th century Grimm brothers adaptation with the gouging out of eyes and the lopping off of toes and heels. I prefer this story, which is about kindness, courage and magic. He included songs from the vintage film, A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes and everyone’s favorite Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo. He also had fun turning various creatures and objects into the required forms to get Cinderella off to

the ball. And what a ball it was! Various renditions of Cinderella’s gown were created. In one scene, it had to be shorter so she could run, and she has a slight train in another scene. There were 270 yards of fabric and the hem measures two miles. One by one, 10,000 Swarovski crystals were attached to the gown and in her hair. Many of the additional gowns were based on those of Aurora, Snow White, and Ariel. Actual Disney Princesses attending the ball are Mulan, Tiana and Belle. Cate Blanchett plays the evil step mother, and her costumes (based on 1930s glamour) add to her frightening demeanor. Check out capemayfilm.org for a video of a conversation with Sandy Powell, the costume designer who discusses Ms. Blanchett’s input on her gown and how the costumes help to determine the characters. It’s short but fascinating. This is a sweet movie, entertaining and enjoyable. Besides, everyone needs a little magic.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

’m well aware that New Jersey is one of the “Middle Atlantic States” but this morning I was struck, once again, by our region’s southern flavor. Sitting on our porch, mug of coffee in hand, I was struck by the southern diction of the birds singing at dawn. Two pairs of Northern Cardinal have chosen to occupy “our” area this year. Ditto, two pairs of Carolina Wren as well as Carolina Chickadees. Mockingbirds seemed stationed at every rose trelace. And overhead, scores of Laughing Gulls made the air ring with their namesake call. So what, you are thinking? Well all these singers underscore the southern nature of our region. Were I sitting on a porch in Hancock County, Mississippi, I’d be treated to the same dawn chorus. Seated on a porch in Bangor, Maine I’d hear none of these vocalists. Score one for the South. Cardinal is the state bird of Virginia and North Carolina. Mockingbird is claimed by Texas and Mississippi. South Carolina cele-

brates the Carolina Wren as their emblematic bird, although the image on the state’s license plate is pretty horrendous. As for chickadee — some readers think they’ve got me here. Both Maine and Massachusetts have adopted “chickadee” as their state bird. But the native chickadee of these New England states is Black-capped, not Carolina Chickadee. Same genus, different species, and with different songs, too. Birds vote with their wings. The presence of cardinals, Carolina Wren, Carolina

Chickadee and mockingbird make us part of the South. You can almost smell the grits. In fact, in some local establishments you can order grits, too.. As for Laughing Gulls, the votes are not in yet. This southern gull has gone through something of a population expansion these last few decades. Still abundant in coastal areas throughout the south, the “Summer Gull” can now be found off the coast of Maine. It joins a host of once-southern species that have expanded their range in response to our warming planet. These pioneers include Redbellied Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse and Prothonotary Warbler. Speaking of Prothonotary Warbler. These stunning, golden-colored breeders are winging their way here as I write. To see the “golden swamp warbler,” join the Cape May Bird Observatory on one of their regular walks to the Rea Farm or Belleplain State Forest. Wear dark glasses or leave half your cone cells at home. The color will nearly blind you and the “sweet...sweet...sweet...” song will make your ears ring.
