Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
here’s some controversy inside these pages, in the form of a couple letters to the editor and a full-page ad, all referring to the controversy surrounding the attempt to recall Mayor Ed Mahaney. But for this column, I have nothing controversial to say, except for — when is the city council going to vote to give Rob Sheehan his job back as Chief of Police since, as I’ve said many times before, he did nothing wrong, a fact that has also been underlined by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. Other than that, I would rather talk about the things I’m looking forward to this summer, given that it’s only two weeks until Memorial Day, a thought that is striking fear into the hearts of any business owner who is renovating, re-opening or just starting here. Here at Exit Zero — we’re only preparing to open our first-ever restaurant, Exit Zero Cookhouse right here on Sunset Boulevard, while also opening up a new retail store, Neversink, on Jackson Street, off the mall. So, trust me, I know how it is this time of year. Other than eating at our new restaurant, I’m looking forward to... Getting my first ice-cold beer of the year

at the Rusty Nail, while digging my toes into the sand. Inhaling a lobster roll on the deck at the Lobster House — there’s no better place to eat one. Sipping an old fashioned on the porch at the Virginia Hotel, made by Helen or Leo, while watching the horses and the people go by, as the breeze blows in from the ocean. Feeling all Miamiesque as I enjoy a cold one at the Ocean Club hotel’s Tiki Ten35 bar. Taking the mutts to the porch of the Inn of Cape May — there’s a good crowd of people and dogs on Sundays.
Watching a spectacular sunset at Harpoon Henry’s, then going around the corner to my pal Victor’s house for some dark and stormies on his deck. Eating sushi with the breeze blowing in my hair at Harbor View. Trying out some new craft beers on the oceanfront deck at Harry’s. Eating the ridiculously good food at Tisha’s outside patio while people-watching on the mall. Hanging out on the deck of Cape May Winery and enjoying the cool vibe at Hawk Haven’s Saturdays on the Crushpad. Nursing a Hendrick’s and tonic while swinging back and forth on the rocking chairs on Congress Hall veranda. And ditto on the rockers at the Chalfonte Hotel. Sitting in the garden at the new Gecko’s and having a scrumptious lunch. And ditto at the new outdoor space at Saltwater Cafe, at South Jersey Marina. And if I want to head out of town, there’s the new beach bar at Hotel Icona in Diamond Beach and the excellent Two Mile Landing. Can’t wait. Can you?

Letters To The Editor
It’s all about the plan to recall Mayor Mahaney From MaryJo Pinnelli, Thomas H. Keene and Charles F. Hendricks, all of Cape May
A
newspaper advertisement sent as an open letter to voters last week stated, “We don’t support the recall effort.” In a community as diverse as the greater Cape May area, we welcome opinions that are different from our own so we can have an informed electorate. However, as the saying goes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own set of facts. The advertisement is full of misquotes, factual inaccuracies and questionable observations and conclusions Perhaps the most egregious is the statement “3. The Temple Study and Convention Hall Construction...” which was substituted for our statement, which read: “Third, he has wasted tax dollars by approving highly questionable sole source contracts to Temple University, overseeing the disastrous construction and operation of Convention Hall costing taxpayers hundreds of thousands dollars annually, and needlessly increasing the City’s annual legal costs to well over $750,000.” Why? Because the author of the open letter to voters could not refute the above charge so he constructed a false narrative. First of all, the Temple sole source contracts remain highly questionable. Take for example the $40,000 Convention Hall landscaping contract offered to an organization more than 100 miles away when there are literally dozens of local qualified landscaping firms in our immediate area. Even worse, much of the landscaping was later replaced. There was no mention in
the ad of the 2012 ethics complaint against Mayor Mahaney as a basis for recall. Having raised the ethics complaint, it should be noted basic due process procedures were not even observed in the Board’s adjudication; it conducted no interviews to our knowledge; took no testimony in an open forum where witnesses could be examined by the complainants; and it summarily dismissed a pleading without making the assumption that would be made by any court in New Jersey, namely that the facts in a complaint must be taken as true and must be seen in the light most favorable to those pleading them. It was apparent that the decision was incompetent, erroneous and a perversion of the Ethics Law. There is no question that improper construction of Convention Hall under the mayor’s watch has resulted in flood insurance costs that are four times as high as they should be, and taxpayers are spending an additional $300,000 in legal costs to resolve this problem. The lack of a profit and loss statement for Convention Hall is to hide the brutal facts that the concert series and other events have been money losers because the mayor’s overbearing style caused a well respected marketing director to resign. Next, the unlawful vote to rescind the appointment of Chief of Police Rob Sheehan has evolved into a whistleblower lawsuit against the city and a monitor lawsuit by the city against the prosecutor. However, it is much more than just a legal issue. It involves the mayor’s lack of integrity according to the County Prosecutor when he falsely stated and implied that Chief Sheehan

LETTERS FROM THE EDITOR FROM PAGE 27 was under criminal investigation. As we said before “the Mayor and Council’s collective actions have done untold damage to the City’s reputation and the morale of our police department while subjecting taxpayers to the burden of unnecessary legal cost.” Cherry-picking editorials from the Press o Atlantic City will not change the fact that an earlier editorial from the paper was titled, “What a mess!” Third, the staffing of the fire department is much more than just a policy issue since one of the ad’s signers would admit that he was lucky to have firefighters at his house after being evacuated because of a gas leak. We are sure the former fire chief who signed the ad would not consider this just a policy matter. It is noteworthy that Channel 10 sent a reporter to interview a prominent local citizen who expressed concern about the vulnerability about a fire response if his bed and breakfast caught on fire. The ad becomes laughable when it states: “we elected these officials — to make the hard calls. Hard calls? To the contrary, so far the mayor and council have made no calls hiding behind the excuse of perform-
ing an elusive study. Fourth, the ad says the criticism the mayor violates the Faulkner Act is unfounded. And if he does violate it, so what. Are we fortunate he works hard and the results of his efforts are (1) wasted taxpayer dollars, (2) a demoralized police force and a strongly divided community over the Sheehan matter, and (3) an understaffed fire department threatening the public safety of residents and tourists? The three of us don’t think so. Why did the 35 people agree to sign this letter to the voters given its content? Having talked to some of the signers who are our friends, it is because they never saw the contents and now they are having second thoughts. Since the majority of the signers own local businesses, they were led to believe that a “recall election will have a tremendous adverse effect on our critical summer and fall tourist seasons”. How silly! Tourists come here for the sun and the surf; most will not either know or care that a recall effort is underway. Some concluding thoughts. The signers say that “we” believe [the recall] is unwarranted, divisive, and not in the best interest of the city. This was not the position of one of the signers when she chaired the 1990

recall committee. As to the composition of the signers: (1) 25% do not live or vote in Cape May and we do not have a problem with that but (2) we do have a problem with its elitist character; where are the police officers, EMT/firefighters, and regular folks? Finally, it has come to our attention that many business owners, many of whom do not reside or vote in Cape May, are sponsoring a second advertisement, most likely appearing in this issue because we obtained an email soliciting support states: “We are part of a group of concerned citizens who need your support. We are very concerned what the impact of a recall election would have on our community. We are running an ad which simply states ‘Please do not sign a recall petition — a recall election would be divisive and bad for our community’ which will be followed by signatures of those who agree.” We ask voters to consider that these concerned citizens are no longer defending the mayor’s behavior but instead are saying if you are exercising your constitutional right to vote it is “divisive and bad for our community.” What is bad for this community is to allow this mayor to have one more year to destroy our community.

For all moms on Mother’s Day with a purchase of a dinner!
or the purpose of this letter, I hope you don’t mind if I call myself Sam. You see, for many of us small business owners and non “who’s who” residents, our playing field is a bit different. If I were to include my real name, there is a very real chance that my store zoning permit won’t get signed, or my patio chairs won’t be the “right” color, or I will suddenly get a visit from the nice code enforcement man, telling me I am in violation of The Code. Silly fear, huh? Makes you think of some communist regime, not idyllic Cape May! For those of you out there who are rolling your eyes and making sarcastic remarks about exaggeration and such — you CAN because you are “Mahaneyans” in this story. You never had to fight for your FREEDOM to have six tables on your patio. You were told you can have ten. (But, you will be indebted to pay back in fudge or favors at every event held for the next five years). You will be called later to “support” an event that I am not able to support. You call it community support... We do NOT. We see it as a selling out of sorts. Many people around this country are fighting for their rights to be equal. Well, how do those prominent signatures justify the fact that the mayor they protect doesn’t protect those rights here in Cape May? When my cousin expressed interest in being married on the beach by the mayor, he was informed that the mayor doesn’t marry HIS kind. I guess those signatures don’t worry much about the bullying being done by Mahaney & Co. They don’t HAVE to worry! Their full-page ad just perpetuated that bullying by making sure that “everyday
people” dare not go against the “who’s who” list. You did that for the good of the city? I think not. I am a humble, law-abiding citizen who is passionate about what I do and where I get to do it. I was NOT called to NOT SUPPORT the recall efforts. I guess I was called to stand on the sidelines and support the ones who are seeking real answers. I was called to answer the tough questions posed by my kids who know Chief Sheehan as “Mr Rob.” So when they asked me what Mr Rob did that was so bad, I got to explain to them in terms that kids understand. Right and wrong. I reminded my 12-year-old of the time he was running for class president. I told him that it would be like your teacher didn’t want you to be the president so he sent you to the principal’s office (or prosecutor’s office) and told them that you were a bad kid. And then when it came time to vote, that same teacher told all the students, “We can’t vote for him because he has been sent to the principal so he must be bad.” My son responded, “That’s not fair! He made it up because he didn’t want me.” Maybe it takes a 12-year-old to stand before council and explain things. Because when this regime is ousted — and it WILL be ousted, whether by recall or revolt or the rendering to their eternal fate — there will be a large UNNAMED group of believers standing by with their self-respect and dignity intact. They will get to hold their hands up and wave to the police officers and firefighters as they go about their day standing in the gap for what “community” really is all about. And hopefully, there will be some business owners and realtors and county newspaper writers and civic leaders who will decide that people are less enamored by your name and more by your call for right and wrong.

The Old Fogey
O
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ne of my infernal descendants (I have so many grandchildren and great grandchildren that I call them all descendants, or “you there!’) came into the house the other day wearing a computerized watch on his wrist. He seemed inordinately pleased that merely by tapping it he could tell me the weather forecast, how far he had ran that day, play some irritating popular music and tell me how many English pounds one can get for a dollar. I countered that I know the weather simply by reading the D’Catur Almanac, that I never run unless being pursued by a wild animal, music should be played on vinyl only, and that it is gauche to talk money. He then asked the thing a question, holding it up to his mouth as if an extra in one of those science iction televisual shows. “Sarah,” he said, “When will greatgreatgreat grampa D’Catur move into the modern age?” You may not believe me when I say this, but a very conident lady inside the device answered, saying: “That will never happen, I am afraid,” in a rather superior tone.
Old instincts kicked in, and quick as a striking cobra, I rapped the tiny computer with my silver-topped cane and to my surprise and his horror it shattered into pieces. “The damned thing spoke, laddie!” I roared, then, quickly covering up my embarrassment at being startled by a modern computing device, added: “That might have been a Nazi bayonet!” as he squealed and clutched his wrist to his chest. “And you’d be dead!” My point was, I feel, pertinent (though in fairness, one is unlikely to fall victim to a Nazi bullet these days, unless one stumbles
in to the wrong neighborhood in Ocean City: it is a little-known fact that the last community of those devils is right there. Once in a while Young Albert and I sniff another one out, but they are like rats, even tho they are in their 90s): a watch is not merely to tell the time. Why do you think we wore large metal pocket watches over our hearts back in the day? Scarcely a man in my regiment had not a tale of being shot in the chest and their lucky pocket watch stopping the bullet. Of course, very often it caused a shot that might have passed through the torso without nicking the heart to ricochet upwards and take off a chap’s jaw, but that’s luck for you. So to put the lie to that (now deceased) Sarah the computer lady’s cheeky answer, I will be embracing the modern age when they agree to instal that machine inside a hand-sized 2lb solid silver casing, with a foot-long chain fob attached. This notion of making everything tiny is sheer nonsense. What next? A telephone without a cable? An automobile that drives itsel? A worldwide network of typewriters without paper?

W
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, go shopping!
inter is over, and you want to be outside. Take advantage of the glorious spring weather to shop at the sidewalk sales on the Washington Street Mall. While you’re enjoying the Victorian-era atmosphere of Cape May, be glad that you aren’t shopping as Victorians did. Nineteenth century shoppers had to know exactly what they wanted before they left the house. Customers did not enter a shop to look around. Instead, they asked the shopkeeper for the item, the shopkeeper brought it out. Usually, the customer was not allowed to touch the item, and if he wanted to make a purchase, he had to haggle over the price. Clerks and shopkeepers often charged more for wealthy-looking customers, or customers who were perceived as difficult to deal with. Fixed prices were a rarity, and some say the price tag wasn’t invented until 1861, when retailer John Wanamaker used it in his Philadelphia store. He may have been inspired by area Quakers, whose egalitarian sensibility required that all shoppers pay the same price.
No matter what price they were willing to pay, early Victorians could not buy readymade clothing before 1861 or so. Clothes were made to order. “Part-made” pieces were available to dressmakers who needed to create “short notice” mourning clothes. Gradually that convenience spread to everyday clothes - the bodice and skirt might be sold separately, and the customer, or her maid, would do the finishing. Plate glass became common around 1850, and for the first time, items were on display to draw customers in. Shoppers did not even have to enter the story to see what was available. Browsing was encouraged and
“window-shopping” became an acceptable way to spend an afternoon. Window shoppers in Cape May can browse for bargains at the sidewalk sales on the Washington Street Mall, Thursday, May 14 through Sunday, May 17. Bring a list of the occasions you have coming up, and shop for gifts in advance of Father’s Day, graduations, and weddings. If you find a clever hostess gift at Love the Cook, pick up several. Find colorcoded Cape May tee-shirts for those Fourth of July family pictures. Visit your old favorites, and check out the new stores. Retailers present an array of bargains: clothing, books, artwork, jewelry, accessories and other items will be available, sometimes at drastic discounts. Convenience is the best part of a sidewalk sale — you can shop as you sip your coffee or enjoy your ice cream. You don’t have to struggle to get the baby carriage into the store. You can even, with the help of an agreeable kid to act as your runner, sit on a bench and make your purchase by pointing. It’s far more pleasant than shopping online, and there are no shipping charges.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Mother’s Day is here and I want to host a brunch for my mom. Problem is, my sister does, too. She’s a lovely person, but she cannot boil water, let alone organize a brunch for 12. It will be a disaster. She will end up crying over the sink. My mother will then put on the apron, hug her and say, “Not to worry honey, I’ll fix it.” And somehow, we will all toast my sister and tell her what a great job she did. How does this happen? I’m the responsible one. I’m a great cook. I wanted this to be my gift to my mother. — Cheated Dear Cheated Both of you can show your love for your mother by eating out. There are any number of Mother’s Day brunches being offered —
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Peter Shields, the Mad Batter and the Blue Pig among them. All with lovely views and great ambience. Sit back, order a round of Bellinis. Toast your mother. Tell H and Diva anticsER what a great job she did and enjoy each other’s company. Dear Answer Lady I love my boyfriend, but I fear he has an anger management issue. He has never lost his temper with me or anyone close to us, but he walked off the soccer field and quit
the team last week when the coach criticized his performance. He loves soccer and seems to be of the opinion that the coach and team are going to beg him to come back — again. I don’t think that’s happening. He’s done this before. Do you think I should talk to the coach on his behalf? His mother says I should and she certainly has, but I’m not so sure. — Enabler? Dear Enabler? Your signature tells the Answer Lady that in your heart you know he is an adult and needs to take responsibility for his actions. And, how much does he really want to play when he keeps walking off the field leaving his team to defend themselves without him? The Answer Lady thinks that instead of begging the coach to forgive his lack of self control and diva antics, you should treat him to a Chi Balancing massage at the Well Center for Massage. As their motto says, “Stress is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” Maybe restoring his Chi will help him stay focused and centered.

LAYLA loves everyone — kids, cats, and other dogs. She loves to play, especially with rope toys, and she’s very smart; Layla has “sit” and “paw” down pat. Although she can be a little nervous when meeting new friends (who isn’t?) she warms up quickly. But don’t take our word for it... come see for yourself.
«
SPIKE is a sweet guy just hoping to find a forever home. He is calm and very smart! He also gets along great with other dogs and kids. And, of course, he loves to play. Spike was once hit by a car (we know — how sad is that!?) so he walks a little funny but is totally fine. It just adds to his cool character.
«
HOLLY has had a tough life so far. Her owner died a while back and she had to survive a long, cold winter by herself. THEN she got pregnant, so she found herself an abandoned dog house in which to have her puppies. Everything worked out though; Animal Control came and saved her. Now all she needs is a second chance at a good life...

FRITZ is a shy boy who is exceptionally friendly. He would make a great mouser or barn buddy... if only he could get out of his cage. Fritz is currently serving time with his sister Gia. They love to play together and would make a great team. Maybe you could give them a chance at life on the outside.
«
BETTY is an adorable, snuggly rollie pollie. (More to love, right?) She was adopted two years ago but due to an illness in the family, Betty had to come back to the shelter. She’s not given up hope for a forever home, though... and neither have we! This cat’s too cool not to get a second chance.

TAFFY is a sweet girl who loves to snuggle and play. She enjoys the little things in life, like sprawling over a nice pillow and relaxing. Taffy came to the shelter after being dumped with her kittens. Her babies have since moved on to other places, leaving Taffy all by her lonesome. Won’t you help change that?

The Movie Column
By Dottie Knapp of Cape May Film Society
T
here’s a new Star Wars trailer, Star Trek 3 will begin ilming in June, and this weekend is the premiere of Avengers: Age o Ultron. My husband Mal and I are big sci-i fans. Preparing for a great summer sci-i movie experience, we pay tribute to one of the greats: the spoof Galaxy Quest from 1999. Since J.J. Abrams called it one of the best Star Trek movies ever made (fans voted it seventh best), it’s safe to say the ilm parodies science iction, movies ESPECIALLY Star Trek. The plot revolves around former TV stars who have nothing to do now but show up at fan events. Their help is requested by aliens who believe the TV show is real and have created their star ship from “historical documents” (i.e. the old TV show). While the actors have no idea how to operate the ship or what the Omega 13 is or does that the villain Sarris (named for a ilm critic Andrew Sarris) is demanding, they turn to a group of fans who help them save the day.
The parody Galaxy Quest is a hoot The humor of the ilm plays to many clichés that you have seen in innumerable television shows. My favorite is the ticking bomb that despite being disconnected must still click down to one. Alan Rickman plays Sir Alexander Dane, a Shakespearean actor who once played Richard III and got 5 curtain calls as he is wont to remind people. But in his role as alien Dr Lazarus, he is reduced to super market openings and giving interviews to fans in makeshift basement and garage
studios. He protests that he never wants to utter his famous Galaxy Quest line again. Mal’s favorite character is Gwen DeMarco, played by Sigourney Weaver. Her job on the ship is to repeat everything the computer says back to the commander. When one of the crew members questions this ritual her frustration with her character comes through. “Look! I have one job on this lousy ship, it’s stupid, but I’m gonna do it! Okay?” I should mention that she looks great in her uniform. Tim Allen plays Commander Taggert with the swagger that many relate to Capt. Kirk both on and off camera. There are a great many laughs, but there is a tear or two as well particularly when Dr Lazarus inally does begrudgingly repeat his most remembered line, “By Grabthar’s hammer, by the suns of Worvan, you shall be avenged.” So enjoy this summer’s best sci-i, but share with us your favorite sci-i ilms! Email capemayilm@hotmail.com.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
t was one of those calls you get often if you are a birder. This one from my friend Janet Crawford. “Hey. I’m at Heislerville and there’s a white pelican in the impoundment.” White pelicans are not exactly stock items in New Jersey. Brown pelicans (in summer) are regular off our beaches. But White pelican turns up only rarely. So what is one doing here? Just visiting. Birds have wings and birds that migrate great distances sometimes go awry. Pelicans are soaring birds. Once they get aloft, they occasionally go with the wind. Living as we do in the land of prevailing westerlies this means that many birds drift here. Here, Cape May becomes the literal end of the line for land based birds. So why this column about this white pelican? Was it a new bird for me. No. That came in 1973 in North Dakota. So why the ink directed toward this bird? To impress upon readers, once again, the serendipitous side of birding. Every day dawns with the promise of unusual things.
The other element worth highlighting is the element of sharing that is endemic to birding. Birds are things to be shared. Unlike money and ICR cream cones there is loss of gratiication in the sharing. In actual fact sharing a “good bird” adds to the gratiication of the inder. It’s as delicious as sharing a secret or juicy bit of gossip. Even better because nobody is going to take you to task for being a blabber-mouth or back-stabber. Sharing is just what birders do. It’s a
tribal thing. So how do you get into the tribe? Easy. Just go birding. Find interesting birds. Share them. Let me correct myself. All birds are interesting. There for our pleasure. What I should have said was “rare or unusual birds or greatly desired” birds. The easiest way to determine what birds fall into these categories is to go to Cape May Bird observatory and pick a free checklist to the birds of Cape May. Those designated “rare” or “accidental,” are the ones you win points for inding and friends. And if your bird identiication skills are rudimentary, no problem. Take the example of white pelican. A human in their third trimester could identify one irst time every time. As big as a mute swan. But with black wing tips. Has a distinctive and huge orange bill (on adults) gray on juveniles). But be careful, brown pelican adults are gray with white-capped heads. In bright light, the birds sometimes appear whitish. So congratulations, Janet. And thanks for the call.
