Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

o the mayor of Cape May, the City Manager and the City Solicitor, it’s like a bad horror movie, one where the bogey man can’t be killed and keeps coming back for more. That’s the first thought I had when the latest salvo was fired in the battle between the city administration and the Chief of Police it demoted. Except... in this particular story, the chief isn’t a bogey man. He’s the good guy. It’s really the city that has been acting horribly in this case. And I’m just wondering when it’s going to stop. Because the only justifiable ending I can see is the reinstatement of Rob Sheehan. And yet, with each passing week, there seems to be more bitterness attaching itself to this storyline, and I find myself wondering if Mayor Ed Mahaney, who’s as stubborn as a mule and as self-righteous as a firebrand Southern preacher, would ever do the right thing even if he became convinced (if he isn’t already) that he totally and utterly messed this thing up when he led the march to push Sheehan out of the top job at Cape May Police Department and back into the role of Captain. It’s made the administration look like cynical, vengeful clowns. And it’s left a black

BIRD

IS THE WORD A CAPE MAY CARTOON

cloud over this beautiful, happy place. I don’t think the affair will stop anyone from coming to visit here. But in terms of taking a PR hit, this has been pretty bad for the city. The latest development came on Friday, when Sheehan released a statement in response to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s office concluding a report into the CMPD controversy which, if you recall, revolves around comp time being taken by Sheehan’s number two, Lieutenant Chuck Lear. The county’s report was released to the city, to Sheehan and to the office of the

state’s Attorney General. It was supposed to be kept private. But Sheehan is calling for the report to be released to the public. The statement from Sheehan’s lawyer read... “he waives all confidentiality rights with regard to the investigation into his conduct and welcomes the report’s release. The people of this city need to see exactly how horrendously governmental leaders are conducting themselves. In the name of transparency, we will request that the Attorney General’s office release the report.” Somehow I doubt the City of Cape May will be calling for the report to be made public, which of course suggests very strongly that Sheehan has nothing to hide and that the city does. By the way, I don’t think the county has emerged from this affair with great credit, either. Although it was likely unintentional, they really did muddy the waters with some statements that were, to say the least, open to interpretation. Still to come? The lawsuit the city has filed against the county, and the suit filed by Sheehan against the city. Sadly, this horror movie isn’t over.

The Old Fogey

G

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

onna need a bigger boat,” I said to Kitchener as I stared out from The Point. “Killing sharks is no longer considered acceptable behaviour for a genteman,” Kitchener pointed out wearily. “Perhaps sir should purchase a camera and...” “There’s a shark?” I sputtered, “why didn’t you tell me? Fetch my Speedos, my seal-disguise paint kit, that tub of lard in the pantry and prepare the speedboat!” Not an hour later we were circling above our old sparring partner, the Great White shark Mary Lee. I raised a hand in a quick but precise salute to Kitchener, who merely lifted a sardonic eyebrow above his book (My Wicked, Wicked Ways, by that rogue and frequent Cape May visitor, Erroll Flynn) and carried on reading. Young Albert had not been informed of the trip, as his lack of fear means he will tackle any and every foe, regardless of size, ferocity or appetite for small dogs. The last time he came with us, when we had intercepted a pod of orcas, he was in the water before I could grab him, and

swallowed whole. It took a day of shadowing and then some serious sifting of whale poop to retrieve the penitent hound. In a moment, I was in the water and face to fin with Mary Lee. Now, there’s little a Great White loves more than a fresh seal, and Mary was after me in a flash. No seal, though, has won three Olympic golds in the swimming events and I was twisting and turning like greased lightning, even touching her snout with a flipper as I flickered past. We do this every time she passes up the coast, Mary and I, and I think she recognizes me

and is enjoying the sport, as much as a shark can enjoy anything bloodless. Even when she nipped me, I am sure it was intentionally gentle, and only cost me a toe, not a leg. Sadly, after just five minutes of this fun, Mary tired of me (sharks are notoriously impatient, almost as much as Wildwooders, in fact, but more charming), and with a dismissive flip of her tail, was gone. I clambered back aboard the Erse, sputtering with adrenalin, demanding: “Kitchener, did you get the photograph? I touched her nose! I will be on the fronf of Life magazine with this!” “Oh,” he deadpanned, reaching a languid hand down under his book towards a camera, “I didn’t think you’d have started yet... would you mind doing it again?” I shall draw a veil over the next few minutes: suffice of to say that I was rather impressed that he managed the swim back to shore nursing a bruise that size on his head. He even assisted me in attaching the prosthetic oak toe to my foot, without too much grumbling, though I noticed later he used a left pinkie on my right foot.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, listen to the music!

dd a little music to your Cape May getaway. From the beginning, music was part of a trip to the sea. The Victorians, credited with “inventing” seaside holidays for the hoi polloi with the radical notion of one-and-a-half days off each week — a.k.a. the “week-end” — loved music at the beach. Brass bands played from piers and oompah bands livened up restaurants. Music halls sprang up for concerts and dancing, and the seashore became a place to try new music. In America, this notion caught hold. The seeds of “beach music” were sown when ragtime mixed with piedmont blues in the Carolinas. AfricanAmerican artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway and Count Basie, performing in segregated resorts, experimented by blending styles. Vacationing teenagers, both white and black, loved it, and by the end of World War II, “beach music,” also known as “shag music,” was in full swing. Beach music is the kind of danceable, singable stuff you can enjoy at the beach after the sun goes down. Think of the “Shoop

Shoop Song” and “You’re No Good” by Betty Everett. “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy” by the Tams. “Hey, Baby,” by Bruce Channel. Jimmy Buffett is a devotee. In California, where Jan and Dean and The Beach Boys gave it their own spin, beach music spawned surf music. Current artists like Pharrell Williams and Lady Antebellum acknowledge the influence of beach music on their work. You can find beach music, or almost any other kind of music, in Cape May on your seashore vacation. Places like Elaine’s, The Rusty Nail, and Harry’s Ocean Bar draw you

in as you leave the beach with happy hour musicians. Elaine’s also has Beatles Night, with tribute band “Love Me Dudes” on May 31. Once you’re cleaned up and dressed up, check out Darin MacDonald in the Brown Room Of Congress Hall on Saturday nights. At the VFW, Sunday afternoon music is open to the public from 2 to 4pm. The Atlantic City Jazz Band plays May 17. Tickets are $20 with proceeds going to the Food Bank of Southern Jersey. Crystal Gayle plays Convention Hall on May 23. The New Spirit Gospel Choir will take you on a “vocal journey” Memorial Day at 7pm at Convention Hall. Check out the The Brigadoons, a Canadian group known for peppy Celtic music and dancing, at Convention Hall on Thursday, May 28 at 8, free. From May 29-31, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival brings a bumper crop of musicians. Paul Jost will be re-imagining Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” in a jazz context at Convention Hall. Roberta Donnay and the Prohibition Mob Band will be appearing all over town. For tickets, visit exit0jazzfest.com. Consider a festival pass if you’re seeing multiple artists.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I was recently elected to our student council, beating out a girl who has always considered me a rival. I was also chosen to be homecoming queen last fall. She lost that battle too and scowled the entire night. Now she attends our meetings and harasses me. She tries to trip me up and embarrass me every chance she gets. I wondered what you would do about it, if it happened to you, Answer Lady? — Harassed Dear Harassed The Answer Lady would kill her with kindness. At the next meeting, wait until she voices her objections to what you are doing or complains you are not doing enough and say, “I think those are all good suggestions and concerns, why don’t we

Wise answers to perplexing questions

meet at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House Saturday morning and discuss it further? And by the way, that’s a lovely dress you have on.” Who could stay mad at anyone offering a free pancake breakfast? Dear Answer Lady The Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner and I dread the onslaught of relatives looking for a free place to light. I’ve haven’t seen or heard from any of them since the last time they came to mooch, I

mean visit. They run through our liquor like prohibition is coming. They clean out the refrigerator and never offer to buy groceries or even take us out to dinner. Even though it’s my sister and my husband’s baby brother we’re talking about, we feel we have reached our limit. How shall we handle this, Answer Lady? — Fed Up Dear Fed Up The answer to this one is easy. One word: reservations. Email them telling them the following: It breaks our heart to tell you this, but we find the house is in need of some major repairs and we cannot accommodate any guests this summe. However, we will be happy recommend a few hotels, quaint B&B, or whole house rental. Of course, if you really want to stay, “Fred” could use a pair of strong hands and arms to lift those shingles onto the roof.” Now, should they pass by and see no such repairs are ensuing, you say you are waiting for the work permits... the construction office at City Hall is just inundated.

«

ZOLA is a five-year-old boxer mix. After having lived with a loving owner, she is calm and well-mannered. Zola loves to play ball in the yard or take long, leisurely walks... she’s great on a leash! Zola would be happiest in a household with no other pets.

RALPH is a three-year-old shorthair. He’s a little shy but once you get to know him, he warms right up. The little guy was found abandoned in a carrier at a business, but luckily for him (and you!) the shelter was kind enough to pick him up and care for him. Nows your chance to do something great for him, too. And for yourself, as well!

«

OLIVER and TWIST are a sweet pair who were abandoned. The shelter had a hard time catching them so the cats took up residence in the woods for a bit... brave little guys. They will do a lot better in a home (and they’ll make your home a lot better, too) so please come to the shelter to meet ‘em.

The Movie Column

F

By Dr Jerry DeMenna, a member of Cape May Film Society

ifty-million people in the US—one in four children—don’t know where their next meal is coming from, despite our having the means to provide nutritious, affordable food for all Americans. Eighty-five percent of food-insecure families have at least one working adult in the household. The price of fresh fruits and vegetables has gone up by 40% since 1980; in contrast, the relative price of processed foods has gone down by about 40%. If these statistics are shocking, it’s because the stigma of hunger in our society has kept the reality hidden. Your peers could be food insecure and you would never know. People are too ashamed to talk about it. In the film A Place at the Table, directors Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush examine this issue through the lens of three people. Barbie is a single mother from Philadelphia who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids. Rosie is a Colorado fifthgrader who often has to depend on friends

A very worthy cause and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school. Mississippi second grader Tremonica has asthma, and her health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford. Through this mosaic, the film reveals the serious economic, social and cultural implications hunger poses for our nation and the systemic issues that cause inequality of access to healthy food. Moreover, the film shows that this is a

problem that America has solved in the past, and can solve again... if average Americans demand it. Their stories are interwoven with insight from experts like sociologist Janet Poppendieck, author Raj Patel and nutrition policy leader Marion Nestle; ordinary citizens like Pastor Bob Wilson and teachers Leslie Nichols and Odessa Cherry; and celebrity activists. Ultimately, A Place at the Table shows us how hunger has serious implications for our nation, and that the problem can be solved once and for all if the American public decides — as they have in the past — that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all. On May 24 at 7:30pm, the Cape May Film Society will join the film’s producers Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush to present A Place at the Table at West Cape May Borough Hall. Pay what you will to help the food charities here in Cape May County. No reservation needed. Find out more at magpictures.com.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

t was one of those days that make me feel guilty that I am a birder. Perfect in every way. Warm, fraught with spring, birdlicious and bolstered by the eager anticipation of 17 participants on my regularly scheduled Monday morning bird walk. It was only marred by your absence, a shortfall we can amend on some future walk. Monday 7:30am at the South Cape May Meadows on Sunset Blvd. (aka, The Nature Conservancy preserve). Be there or bereft (behind). Why guilt? Because after a morning encounter as rich as this, I am brought to wonder, once again: Why isn’t everyone on the planet a birder? Half a dozen Common Loons migrated by while we were still mustering in the parking lot. We enjoyed in-your-face views of singing Common Yellowthroats, adult male Blue Grosbeaks — a bird so blue they had to recalibrate the light spectrum to keep it from being ink black. Newly arrived Eastern Kimgbirds and Orchard Orioles were vying

for perches, and flocks of migrating cormorants enlivened the horizon. Then we left the parking area and started the walk, a two-hour journey into Spring facilitated by the wit and wisdom of skilled field trip leaders and bolstered by the eager enthusiasm of participants. The birds? This morning we had 56 species but we always count on 40-60 species calibrated. So ask yourself. What were you doing at 8am May 5 that was more important or

engaging than telescope views of American Oystercatcher or seeing the season’s first Solitary Sandpiper and getting crushing looks at male Gadwall, a dapper duck dressed like a Brook’s Brothers ad in The New Yorker. Only 17 participants got to share these marvels with me: Karl Lukens, Chuck Slugg and Pat Perkins, my co-leaders. Local birder Mike Hannisian also brought his rods and cones and 40 years experience to bear in the name of missing no bird within two time zones of our location. You say you are not a bird watcher? I say you are only a spotting scope view of a male Blue Grosbeak away from an experience that will change your tune and your life. You bring the enthusiasm, we’ll provide the birds and then we’ll share the WOW. Every Monday. But if Monday is not a good day for you, know that CMBO has bird walks scheduled almost every day. Some are even timed for people who are addicted to their snooze buttons. See you bright and early, pilgrim.
