The food is simple but well prepared. The early bird special is a good deal with three courses and a variety of options. The menu for later is extensive. The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

M

emorial Day is not what it used to be. Oh, the actual remembering veterans part is still splendid: I put on my few dozen favorite medals, whatever uniform from my collection piques my interest (except my Desert Rats uniform: one Memorial Day evening I had one too many malts with my visiting old WW2 buddies at The Brown Room, and happened to be overcome with emotion, nostalgia, and alcohol when taking a stroll on the beach. I lay down for a little nap and woke to see the tractor bearing down on me, unable to see my because of my camof lage. Luckily, the old instincts were still there and I combat-crawled to the side just as it roared past, rake blades glinting, and threw my lucky El Alamein grenade under the wheels (it is lucky in the sense that when an Afrika Corps major threw it at me, he forgot to take the pin out and I caught it before bludgeoning him with it), disabling the vehicle. And this year I am, of course, as always, meeting those surviving buddies

who will come down to Cape May, and we will drink rather too much and compare war wounds (Alphonse “D-Day” Dubois from Ocean City will as usual cause an awkward moment by borrowing my silver topped walking cane and rapping on the metal plate in his head so that it booms like a gong) and thank God we are not young and driving in some forsaken land dreading that our jeep runs over an explosive device. But as for the whole start-of-summer thing, I feel a little jaded. Oh, the hordes still descend on the beaches, and the side-

walks echo to the sound of cheap f lip-f lops slapping and tent-like white “I Came To Cape May And All I Got Was A Nasty Rash” tee-shirts snapping in the sea breeze. And Young Albert still brims o’er with excitement at the thought of all these fresh pink chubby ankles to savage. But I feel my old enthusiasm for crafting the perfect welcome for our beloved visitors has faded a little. Yes, there are the lovely japes, such as renting a crop-duster to f ly over the beach dumping my patented glitter and glue mix, and the “accidental” release of the tiger at closing time outside Cabanas, not to mention the troupe of actors I rent to haunt the city in the night: they work on commission, and the bonuses for making a visitor scream, faint or pee themselves are hefty (if they manage all three on the same victim in any order, their fee is doubled). But I feel the need to re-infuse the weekend with some real excitement. Suggestions, please, on a postcard, to the Editor of this organ. And nothing fatal. At least not immediately so.

The Activity Column

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, let’s paddle!

he water around Cape May is still pretty chilly, so swimming may have to wait. That doesn’t mean you’re locked on land — get yourself into a kayak. If you’ve never paddled a sea kayak, you may be surprised at how easy they are to maneuver. Generally, you stay pretty dry, so it’s a good activity this early in the season. Cape May harbor and the surrounding marshes are a perfect place to learn. Take a kayak on your own, or join a guided tour and have an expert point out the sights. The guides tend to be personable, patient and funny. We’ve been lucky enough to have science teachers on summer break, birders, and fisherman who know all about Cape May waterways. When you rent, you’ll get a quick lesson. Pay attention, and wear the lifejacket they give you. When you get into the kayak, slide yourself all the way back. Sit up straight and put your legs out in front of you, slightly bent — straight legs lead to sore backs. Hold the paddle with a gentle grip, hands about

shoulder width apart. Your arms will be relatively close to your torso as you paddle. Start out slow and stick close to shore until you feel comfortable. You’ll get the hang of it after a few strokes. If you’re ready to pick up speed, get into a steady rhythm and dip the paddle into the water equally on each side. To change course, dip the paddle deeper on one side and the kayak will turn toward the paddle. If you rent a double, the paddler in the back has most of the control, so put the kids in front. Wear a tee shirt and shorts, or a bathing suit if it’s really hot. Wear sunscreen, a hat,

sandals, and sunglasses. Bring bug spray, especially if you plan to explore the marshes. Bring a bottle of water because paddling is thirsty work. Leave a towel in the car so you can dry off when you are finished. Consider leaving your phone behind, or at least put it in a waterproof case. At Miss Chris Marina, 1212 Wilson Drive (609 884-0997), rent a single for $20 an hour or $30 for a double. There are daytime and sunset two-hour tours for $35. At Aqua Trails, 1600 Delaware Avenue (609 898-8848), single kayak rentals are $25 for one hour, $35 for two hours. Double kayak rentals are $35 for one hour and $45 for two. Half day, full day and weekly rentals are also available. Aqua Trails also offers a variety of kayaking tours. Cape Kayaks at 956A Ocean Drive (609 884-1224) also rents, and even delivers the kayaks to you at your favorite beach. Most kayak rental places also rent standup paddle boards, in case you want to paddle even further out of your comfort zone. Next week: Restaurant Week

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady, My boyfriend and I broke up shortly before we were going to move in together. I found a roommate and JUST moved into a new apartment, and he suddenly wanted to be friends again. Which was fine. We worked out together at the gym. Went to dinner with friends a few times. Last weekend we got a little touch feely, but when I wanted a little more than a good night kiss, he said “Whoa. We’re just friends right?” What do I do with that? — Mixed Signals Dear Mixed Signals, The Answer Lady doesn’t understand why you didn’t just tell him, “Thanks, but I have enough friends.” You need to move on, sister. There are plenty of men out there who would love to keep company with you and

Wise answers to perplexing questions

not tangle your brain into knots. So, here’s what you do: next time he wants to “hang out,” you tell him, “Sorry, pretty busy. Later gater.” Then round up your posse of BFFs and go to Lucky Bones for drinks, food and chuckles. Next day, pop over to Seaweeds and get yourself a pretty frock. A trip to Sea Spa is in order and finally, a night of dancing at Carney’s. That will get you back on track. Dear Answer Lady, I am on the board of a charity and I

sit next to a very attractive woman who consistently wears low cut dresses and sweaters. I cannot help it. My eyes are constantly drawn to her cleavage. Last week she accused me of sexual harassment. She didn’t make a thing of it, but she certainly let me know that I was not looking at her eyes when we were chatting before the meeting. I laughed and apologized, but don’t you think I should tell her to wear something else if she doesn’t want that kind of attention? — Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered Dear Bewitched, You are bewildered but you needn’t be bothered giving the fetching woman beside you suggestions on her attire. The way she dresses is her business. The Answer Lady has one word of advice for you: Restraint. Your course of action should be eyes right (or left depending on which side she sits). Instead go to Cape Atlantic Book Company and buy yourself a book to occupy your eyes while waiting for the board meeting to begin.

ZOLA is a five-year-old boxer mix. After having lived with a loving owner, she is calm and well-mannered. Zola loves to play ball in the yard or take long, leisurely walks... she’s great on a leash! Zola would be happiest in a household with no other pets.

RALPH is a three-year-old shorthair. He’s a little shy but once you get to know him, he warms right up. The little guy was found abandoned in a carrier at a business, but luckily for him (and you!) the shelter was kind enough to pick him up and care for him. Nows your chance to do something great for him, too. And for yourself, as well!

«

OLIVER and TWIST are a sweet pair who were abandoned. The shelter had a hard time catching them so the cats took up residence in the woods for a bit... brave little guys. They will do a lot better in a home (and they’ll make your home a lot better, too) so please come to the shelter to meet ‘em.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

B

en Stiller is joined in his last effort, While We’re Young, by Naomi Watts. Together they play a couple that would have once been called “DINKs” (Double Income No Kids). They are a happily married, middle-aged, childless pair whose best friend couple (in the same age bracket) just had their first baby and are on a somewhat different trajectory in life’s journey. Stiller plays a documentary filmmaker/professor who is stuck in a rut on his latest project, which he’s been working on for 10 years. As his wife (Watts) is the daughter of a very successful filmmaker (played by Charles Grodin), there is some tension between father-in-law and sonin-law as the elder tries to help younger get unstuck. And the proverbial plot thickens when a younger couple comes into Stiller’s class to befriend him. This free-spirited younger pair (played by Amanda Seyfried and Adam Driver) bring out the youth lost in the older couple. Stiller and Watts

Stiller not acting his age in While We’re Young find themselves biking in the city more or taking a hip-hop exercise class--and they find it difficult keeping up with their much younger new friends. In time, Stiller begins to think the couple is only after access to his more successful filmmaking father-in-law. Although none of the scenes rise up to the level of hilarious, the laughs are there to the credit of director Noah Baumbach, who is behind such projects as the Madagascar series, quirky films like his

Oscar-nominated The Squid and the Whale (2005), and writer for Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). This film also has a plot that carries you along pretty quickly. The characters are genuine, even in their insincerity, and the dialogue is fresh and realistic. The film clocks in at a little over an hour and a half--something I appreciate more and more as films are getting longer and longer to meet seems. What the film lacks is a real depth on the drama side of its drama/comedy designation. I started to relate to this couple, to Stiller being stuck in his rut, to their contemporary friends not understanding the phase they were going through. But in the end I was left f lat by a lack of true conf lict or follow through. So, for a well-written character study that delivers some solid laughs and sliceof-life drama, I give While We’re Young decent grades. As a film that moves you and leaves you deeply impressed, maybe not so much.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

S

o once again I am overwhelmed by the region’s bounty of natural riches. Overlooking the Heislerville impoundments in Cumberland County, my workshop group and I were awed by the spectacle of migrating shorebirds. Thousands of tiny Semipalmated Sandpipers sitting out the high tide. They animated the mud flats, making the planet vibrate with motion. Fresh up from South America, they were arriving with their fuel tanks on E–all their fat reserves used up in the nonstop flight. Weighing less than an ounce, the birds have less than two weeks to regain their flight weight in time to make the final leg of their journey to the Arctic. The Delaware Bay or, more accurately, the spawn of the horseshoe crabs that breed along its shores are the critical link between South America and the Arctic. It’s a big range for such a tiny bird. Without the Delaware Bay and its crabs, the birds’ panhemispheric strategy for survival fails and Semipalmated Sandpipers join the Dodo, the Great Auk, the Passenger

Pigeon and Heath Hen in the growing club of extinct species. But here and now, on the shores of Delaware Bay, is one of the greatest spectacles in the natural world - a National Geographic Special in our own back yards. The fact is, Semipalmated Sandpipers have suffered the same 80% population decline that has afflicted the Federally Threatened Red Knot. Me? I’m optimistic about the future of both sandpiper species. Why care about the fate of two bird species that are just passing

through? Three reasons. First: because they are important threads in the web of life that supports us and all other living things. Second: because we are thinking, responsible creatures (or at least, we like to think we are). Third: because this annual surge of migrating shorebirds pumps tens of thousands of tourist dollars into the economy. In my workshop group were residents of Florida, Oregon, Michigan, Kansas and South Carolina, all drawn to the region’s fame as a top bird watching destination. We who live here have an incredible resource in these migrating shorebirds, and a moral and economic responsibility to protect them. It’s a big responsibility and a big opportunity for our species to show what we’re capable of when the chips are down. And, for the next two weeks, a great chanceto see firsthand one of the natural spectacles that makes our region so celebrated. Check out the Cape May Bird observatory website for information about scheduled field trips led by resident experts.
