Ramblings From The Editor

L

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ast Memorial Day weekend I was in the Caribbean for the first time, visiting St John. It’s a place I’d often dreamed of seeing — who doesn’t get a hankering for turquoise-colored bays and white sandy beaches shaded by coconut palms? And yet, after a few days, I was ready to return to Cape May, happy in the knowledge that yet another bucket list spot didn’t quite live up to America’s Original Seaside Resort. I felt the same way a few years ago when I took in the best small resort towns the west had to offer, from Oregon to SoCal. In my book, only Carmel measured up to Cape May. A couple weeks ago, I got the chance to visit another acclaimed resort town, Sag Harbor, in the Hamptons, the playground of New York City’s rich folks. I was there to check out Baron’s Cove, the new hotel and restaurant that was recently launched by Cape Resorts, owners of Congress Hall, The Virginia Hotel, Beach Shack and Sandpiper. Cape Resorts’ leader, Curtis Bashaw, had invited quite a few friends and colleagues from Cape May to check out his latest venture. As with everything Cape Resorts does,

BIRD

IS THE WORD A CAPE MAY CARTOON

Baron’s Cove managed to be classy, fun and relaxing all at the same time. The bar is cut from the same cloth as The Brown Room, while the restaurant’s whitewashed cathedral ceilings and brick fireplace, exposed beams, amazing reclaimed wooden floor and burlap-covered walls strikes the right balance between oyster bar and high-end casual dining. As for the town of Sag Harbor, it’s charming. Parts of it feel like the Point, other streets evoke the city’s historic district, while the main street has everything a classic small town requires — an indepen-

dent hardware store, a good mix of shops, a few excellent restaurants (and a wonderful dive bar was a highlight), but there were no beautiful beaches just steps away. And nothing like the range of activities you can enjoy here. Don’t get me wrong — it was great fun tooling around the Hamptons, imagining which A-list celebrity lived in which mansion, taking the tiny ferry to Shelter Island, and seeing the ridiculously cool and grand condo project Cape Resorts is developing at a former watch case factory in Sag Harbor. But this latest road trip once again reminded me of how lucky we have it here. Congratulations to Michael Kline for producing another spectacular Exit Zero Jazz Festival. This old city was bopping all weekend long. Space permits me from saying anything more than, Bravo! Was sad to hear of the passing of Kurt Axelsson, who with his wife Ceil ran Axelsson’s Blue Claw restaurant, on Ocean Drive, just outside of town. Kurt passed away a couple weeks ago, at the age of 76. He and Ceil had been married 52 years. My condolences to Ceil and the rest of the Axelsson family.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

t was so unseasonally warm that I saw a man burst into f lames on the beach today. Well, when I say “saw”, I perhaps mean “caused”, when I climbed up to the D’Catur Mansion’s widow’s walk to view the city through my newly restored Magnifying Oculus. That splendid device is a solid ton of brass and thick glass lenses that rotates on hundreds of oiled bearings. When aligned correctly, it can magnify things by a factor of one million. As such it needs to be treated with caution: there are a great many things that occur in our fine city that are hard on the eyes when seen at their true scale, let alone in close-up zoom. Back when it was first unveiled, the Oculus was quite the scientific marvel, and people used to come from far and wide to pay a penny to look through it. Even that writer fellow, Tolkien, was impressed, and I believe that he based the “the eye of Sauron” on my hugely magnified eyeball blinking through the 6-foot-wide glass lens from atop the Mansion. I admit that once in a while I have

utilized the Oculus to help me turn certain events in my favor: I once played the volatile Bobby Fischer in the famed Jersey Shore Chess Tourney, and knowing that the man was an actual magician (oh, yes. Actual.) I needed to even the odds, so I had Kitchener perched there looking through the window of The Admiral and passing along coded advice through a mile-long telephonic cable that ended in a miniaturized microphone that fit inside my stovepipe hat. (I won, but Bobby threw a magical tantrum that caused the hotel to collapse. It all had to be hushed up.)

The Oculus was retired to the cellar for a while, but I’ve always felt the widow’s walk needed a centerpiece, and after the city made me take down the antiaircraft battery, it has looked empty, so this Memorial Day I managed to (make Kitchener) drag it up and dust it off. In my haste to view our city in all its splendor, I had not bothered to check the Oculus’s angle to the sun when I pulled the cover off. I did not link the distant shriek and puff of smoke over the beach until I noticed the lens was facing the wrong way, and when I reversed it and peered through, I was looking at a rather large sooty smudge on the beach, from which bystanders were f leeing in terror. I very quietly slipped the cover back on, and quietly walked inside. “Kitchener,” I said casually, “I think there’s been another of those spontaneous combustions again.” “Probably the work of the gods, sir,” he said deadpan, “shall I remove the Oculus to the cellar, again?” We spoke of it no more.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week enjoy birds and beers by bike!

ew Jersey Audubon has created an event to blend three of Cape May’s most popular hobbies - biking, birding, and drinking beer. Delaware Bay Birds and Beers by Bike takes place Saturday, June 6. Birds and Beers by Bike is a twelve hour adventure sure to please the whole crowd. Birders have been flocking to Cape May for two hundred years. Millions of birds stop on their migrations, making the Jersey cape a wonder of the birding world - some four hundred species have been identified here. Like birders, beer lovers are avid travelers, but the “brewery tourist” is a new breed. They make pilgrimages to top breweries, eager to talk to craft brewers to learn secret ingredients and ancient techniques. And for bikers, Cape May is a popular destination, combining flat roads with natural and architectural beauty. Bikers are often birders, tied by an interest in preserving the environment, and both have been known to enjoy a beer at the end of a long day. Beer even has the carbohydrates and electrolytes

bikers and birders need to recharge after a workout. Combining all three is natural. The journey begins with breakfast at the Cape May County Airport’s Flight Deck Diner, where you meet the naturalists who will serve as your guides. They can help you identify Prothonotary Warblers and Indigo Buntings and show you the difference between a tern and a storm-petrel. The first stage is a short 2.5 miles to Cox Hall Creek, where bike-friendly trails lead to breeding areas and ponds. Binoculars will be provided. Then, it’s a four mile ride

to the ferry, where you hitch a ride across the Delaware Bay. After a ride through Cape Henlopen State Park and the Junction and Breakwater Trail, visit the Dogfish Head Brewery for lunch and a beer tasting. Explore the Fort Miles area before boarding the ferry back to Cape May. After a five mile ride to the airport, enjoy refreshments at Cape May Brewery. In total, you’ll cover about forty miles. Bring your own lunch, or bring money to purchase food at the ferry terminals and breweries. Bike rentals can be arranged. Remember your helmet, along with sunscreen, bug spray, a jacket, water, and snacks. Breakfast at 8 a.m. is optional. The trip begins at 8:45 a.m. on June 6. (June 7 is the rain date.) Tickets, which include your ferry pass, are $40 for New Jersey Audubon members and $60 for non-members, with discounts for college students with ID. For more information, visit njaudubon.org. For reservations, call the Nature Center of Cape May at 609-898-8848. Next week: Guys’ Weekend

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am getting married in July. My future mother-in-law wants to hosts a bridal shower for me at Sea Salt at the Ocean Club Hotel. I don’t want a lavish shower because we are having a small, intimate wedding and I think it inappropriate to invite people to a shower and not the wedding. She sees nothing wrong with this. It is very embarrassing and yet, if I protest too much, I see even worse drama around the corner. She also says I need a hair stylist – she knows just the one who can “tame” my hair and knows exactly where we can get a “deal” on a honeymoon cruise. What should I do, Answer Lady? – Bulldozed Dear Bulldozed You certainly have a tiger by the tail.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

The Answer Lady suggests a meeting of the minds — bring your betrothed to the table. (Your tiger may be tamed by the presence of her cub.) Compromise: Agree to the bridal shower at Sea Salt, but insist on limiting the guest list. This will give you some control over the proceedings, but don’t be too shocked when twice the number of people show up. She will no doubt invite them off-the-cuff and claim it was all a mistake. Instead of getting worked up about it, enjoy the moment! Before she has a chance to

“tame” you and your hair, give Artizan Salon & Spa a call and make your own appointment. And breathe! Dear Answer Lady I work a woman’s boutique and I suspect one my co-workers is smitten with me. I have a boyfriend. I am not attracted to women, and even if I were, she would not be my type. She is twice my age. All I know is I would like her attentions and unwarranted compliments to end. But how do I do that and keep the work atmosphere pleasant? I do not my boss to know, for her sake as well as mine. – Pursued Dear Pursued I suggest an after-work gathering of colleagues and significant others at Harry’s at the Montreal Inn. Sit outside, enjoy the view, the music, and the food and make sure your pursuer sees how VERY happy you are with your present situation. If she doesn’t take the hint, politely let her know she’s crossed your boundaries. She may just be trying to make friends with you, in which case you can tell her that she’s making you uncomfortable.

Meet DOODLES, a playful guy with a beautiful brindle coat and lots of energy for having fun. This, along with his sweet, loving nature and his love of snuggling, would make him a great family dog. Doodles is a smart fellow - he’s house trained and knows how to “sit”.

GUCCI was brought to the shelter after she was abandoned in front of a police station. She’s very smart, and appreciates the mental stimulation of training with people. She was a star student in the shelter’s Canine Life and Social Skills (CLASS) program, and she’s looking foward to learning new tricks with a loving owner.

Rebecca Chamberlain Joins Long & Foster Real Estate

Why did you transfer to Long and Foster? As a top producing agent I have been actively recruited by multiple agencies. After doing extensive research on each company and what they could offer me, but more importantly what they could offer my clients, the choice was easy. Long and Foster Real Estate’s professional marketing platform, state-of-the art technology and broad support base allows me to devote more time to what I do best: work with buyers and sellers to negotiate successful real estate transactions. Given that I work

the entire county from Cape May Point to Ocean City having a centrally located headquarters in Stone Harbor was the ideal location. I have a second fully operational office in my home in North Cape May. My philosophy has always been to provide first class concierge type service and now I have the perfect partner with Long and Foster! Tell us about your background and honors or achievements. I started this business in 2007 when

the market was free falling. My greatest achievement is that I started from nothing and built a thriving business. I have achieved the NJAR Circle of Excellence Award for Sales every year from 2008-2014. In 2014 I sold 49 properties. I also carry the Resort and Second Home Specialist and Seniors Real Estate Specialist Designations. Before I became a Realtor I was a Real Estate Investor and Developer. I still do one remodel or new construction project every year or so and I own four rental properties. I love Real Estate and have a unique understanding of the potential for investment as well as a trained eye for design and staging. I have a deep understanding of the market and I connect with people. I listen. Real Estate is my passion and working with my clients to achieve their dreams and goals is my honor. The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

I

t’s summertime…lots of blockbuster films to choose from. So what did I choose to see? For some strange reason, I chose a film that I didn’t really like when I first saw it as a teenager about… about… oh snap, how many years ago was I a teenager?! No wait, this isn’t about how old I’m getting... It’s about Mad Max: Fury Road. Can a film be a reimagining if the original director, in this case George Miller, is still at the helm? The answer is yes— and what a reimagining! When I was a kid, I wasn’t that impressed with Mad Max, although everyone around me seemed to be. Mel Gibson played the title character, an ex-cop in a post-apocalyptic world where gasoline is the highest commodity—and yes, people killed for it. The first in the series was simply titled Mad Max, and it came out in 1979 (I was 14). The second film came out in 1981, called The Road Warrior. The third film was Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985), and that’s the one that co-starred Tina Turner.

Tom Hardy as Mad Max in this summer’s masterful blockbuster, Mad Max: Fury Road. In the last of the trilogy back in the 1980s, Turner sang “We don’t need another hero.” As I approached the theater, I thought, “Maybe we don’t need another Mad Max movie…” But I was so wrong. Mad Max: Fury Road is clearly the best installment of this series. It is beautifully shot, with much more focus on the wasteland setting so you get a true sense of despair. The plot: There is a citadel in this vast

desert, where sits the one man who holds the key to any ration of water. That man uses it to his advantage, reducing his people to savages as they scavenge for that even more precious resource: yep, gasoline. The women of the citadel make to a bold escape to get away from this angry ruler and free their children from his clutches. The premise is as compelling and phenomenal as the roaring chase and battle sequences to follow. Maybe I’m older now and can get it, but I think there’s more to it than that. Miller has created an allegory here, and you know I reserve that designation for a very few films, those that can rise up to the challenge. Allegory is more than just clever symbolism, it is an interweaving of plot and backstory that speaks to modern society in a way that gets to the heart of who we are and how we live. Mad Max as allegory? Did I just say that? I was that impressed with this film. All the other summertime fare will simply have to live up to this one.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

f you set out to design a bird capable of flying, literally, to the opposing ends of the earth, you would end up with something like the sandpiper. These Sanderlings are one species among a large group of birds known as the Scolopacidae–the “sandpipers.” Breeding for the most part in the arctic biome, they winter in more temperate climates that extend from coastal New England to Tierra del Fuego. It’s easier said than done, as some species are obliged to fly 8,000 miles nonstop to reach their destinations. How can an organism of flesh, bone and feathers accomplish such a remarkable feat? Answer: refinement. You start with your basic bird structure, a system of weight-saving, hollow bones fitted with wings, muscle driven airfoils that let it move through the air. The feather is the device that makes this work–a supremely light, durable scale that enfolds the wing, allowing birds to gain lift and cleave forward through thin air. Shorebirds then compound this basic evolutionary package with long, pointed

wings like those of jet planes. They are powered by large pectoral muscles that may constitute half of the bird’s total weight, fueled by a blood sugar mix twice as rich as mammals’. Before and during long flights, birds further reduce weight by reducing the size of temporarily unnecessary internal organs– like those designed for reproduction and food processing. By the time shorebirds reach their destinations they are literally skin, bones and feathers. When the last of their fuel supply runs out the birds must metabolize muscle

tissue to keep them aloft, burning their own engines in a desperate bid to reach their refueling depots. For many species, this is the Delaware Bay, where they hope to find a buffet line of the energy rich, easy to digest, lipid packets that are horseshoe crab eggs. Why would a group of birds evolve to engage in such an effortful and risky strategy for survival? In summer, the arctic is a rich environment that can only be exploited by species willing to push the limits. Nature hates to leave resources unused, hence the need for creatures that can exploit the arctic’s riches, raise their young during a brief two month window of opportunity, and evacuate before winter closes over the arctic lands in September. So the next time you see a sandpiper on the beach, appreciate it for what it is - one of the natural world’s crowning achievements, a bird that enjoys air supremacy across two hemispheres and has pushed the biological envelope to the sustainable limit of life on earth.
