Ramblings From The Editor
A
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
s someone who has been walking dogs on Higbee Beach for 11 years, I took a keen interest in the debate going on in Lower Township regarding regulations on bay beaches. On Monday, the council voted in favor of an ordinance that bans dogs from bay beaches from 11am to 4pm and requires that they be leashed during the times that they are permitted. Predictably, there has been a spirited reaction from the public because we are, after all, a dog-loving nation. But I’m not as opposed to the new regulation as some other dog owners. I will always fiercely defend the right to exercise our dogs on beaches because they like few things more than romping and wandering, and there are very few places they can do that here without suffering multiple tick bites. But I never feel like it’s a good idea to take a dog on the beach in the middle of the day. I know that some folks bring tents for shade and water for drinking, but I think their mutts would be much better off in an air-conditioned home, even without the company of their owners. The leash rule bothers me, though. Dogs SHOULD be allowed to run and stretch their legs, assuming they are not the kind of dogs

who are liable to attack or scare other animals or humans. That, of course, is the responsibility of the owner. If I couldn’t let our Rudytoo run himself into the ground every day, he’d be even more of a basket case than he already is. As for picking up dog poop, it disgusts me that dog owners fail to do this on a fairly regular basis. I’d increase the fines for offenders, although the trouble with these new regulations is that there doesn’t seem to be the manpower to enforce them. But let’s remember that dogs aren’t the only problem when it comes to fouling our
beaches. It makes me crazy to see the trash that’s dumped by humans (let’s call them morons instead) — I’ve seen used diapers on Higbee Beach, as well as the regular stack of empty cans. I will never understand the scumbag mentality that would make people want to spoil a sacred spot such as a beautiful beach. There have also been complains from beachgoers in Lower about the part of the new ordinance that outlaws people being under the influence of alcohol. I think I’m right in saying that anyone who discreetly enjoys a few cold drinks is not going to get a ticket. Start tossing empty beer cans and acting like a drunk, and you might be in trouble. As you should be. Thank you to everyone who has visited (and enjoyed) our new restaurant, Exit Zero Cookhouse, since it opened last Wednesday. I’ve written little about it because, frankly, I was terrified to since I had no idea what to expect. But we’ve had a hugely encouraging first week. And thank you to all the EZ folks who’ve made it happen. It’s just as difficult as I’d expected it to be, and it ain’t even July yet...

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
do love eating out. No offense to The D’Catur Mansion’s full time chef, Igor, of course: there is nothing that man cannot do with a potato. After we recued him from the steamship Leon Trotsky when it foundered off Cape May Point (we were having trouble with wreckers in those days, and it took us years to track the last of the rogues down and hang ‘em from the yardarm of the Concrete Ship), he signaled that he had served as the ship’s cook and was willing to provide us with the same services. We were dazzled by Igor’s concotions. Fried potato slices so thin you could, if not careful, lose a finger on their edge; mashed potato so fuffy it had to be tethered to one’s plate with a fine silver net to stop it f loating away; roasted potatoes so golden diners had to wear sunglasses, and so on. But after a few months, even the most appreciative dinner guests would politely decline invites, and we ourselves would pale slightly at the sight of the dining table laden with potatoes. So, to avoid offending Igor (whose dex-
terity with a knife suggested he was not just the cook onboard that Russian ship) we instituted the twice-weekly “Dining Out” tradition that has lasted to this day. Even once Igor departed from our service (one day he was simply gone, along with a note in Russian that translated to “enough potatoes, already”) we continued to dine out. Thus we found ourselves (Young Albert, Kitchener and myself) in what I had misheard as the “Exit Zero Cathouse” (I was rather disheartened to discover that it was, in fact, a “Cookhouse”) the other night. I was a little disappointed in the
decor: I could not spot a framed photograph of myself on any of the walls, but Kitchener assured me that my cartoon likeness was pasted to a tabletop: it looked to me as if he were using some sauce to draw something rude on the forehead, but I may be wrong. Anyhow, we ordered a curry, and I was somewhat surprised to note the burly black-clad waiter’s uncanny resemblance to Cape May’s own Citizen-Kane-like newspaper tycoon, that rude Scotch fellow who seems to be cropping up more and more in daily life here. He even sounded like him: when Young Albert hopped up on his chair and I tucked his napkin into his collar, the waiter shouted: “Naw dugs oanna tay-buls!” We recognized this was a traditional Scotch toast, and all raised our glasses and shouted back the proper reply: “Up yer erse, Sassenach!” and he wandered off, cursing happily. It was a fine evening, I must say, with no blood shed, and I shall be sure to help them hugely by making it known I am planning to dine there every Friday.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, have a guys’ weekend!
emember the freedom of that first summer after you got your driver’s license? You and your friends would pile into an ancient Ford Grenada and drive to the beach, blasting Bob Seger on the cassette player. You’d arrive on the sand armed with nothing more than a towel and a Frisbee. There was no cooler full of juice boxes to lug, no umbrella to keep the kids out of the sun. You didn’t have to carry anybody across the hot sand. When you got hungry, you bought a hot dog and a soda from a nearby vendor, paying with salt-soaked bills pulled from the pocket of your cut-off jeans. All you had to do was have fun. Recreate that feeling with a guys’ weekend in Cape May. As great as it is to be a dad (or just a grownup), you don’t have to be a member of the HeMan Woman Haters Club to need some time away from work, or the wife and kids. (Heck, in our house, even the dog is a girl.) Sure, you can grab a beer or watch a game, but men need to do something - something more than fixing that leak in the sink or changing
the wiper blades. Go back to the beach, hopefully in something more stylish than those cut-off jeans. Enjoy some friendly competition! Step up your Frisbee game with a Kan Jam set up on the beach, or play bocce or ladder ball, loser pays for dinner. A wiffle ball game lets you have a true competition without endangering anyone’s rotator cuff. Get out on the water and do some fishing, then tell grossly exaggerated stories about your trip. Boats like the Cape May Lady set out three time a day. Tickets are $45 with an extra $5 for a rod
and reel. Call 609-780-7900 for more information. Play a high stakes game of miniature golf, or visit the Cape May Par 3 at 29 Fulling Mill Road, Rio Grande, for a casual, affordable game - beach attire is welcome, and it’s only $15.95 for 18 holes, $2 more for clubs, bag and cart. Call 609-889-2600 for more information. Rent some bikes and race out to Cold Spring Village for their Military Timeline, June 20 and 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This exhibition features various conflicts spanning several centuries, and you can grab a snack at the bakery or the ice cream parlor. Tickets are $12, or you can get a combination ticket with the Naval Air Station in Wildwood - $16 for both museums. Visit hcsv. org for more information. Or, try something completely new. Willow Creek Winery in West Cape May offers Drum Circles featuring artist Jeffrey Hebron on Mondays in June, July and August. Admission is free, and you can purchase tapas, wine and sangria. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband likes to take pictures of me on his cellphone – well, actually just of my breasts. He is particularly fond of cleavage shots. We think it’s funny and a good way to keep our marriage exciting. Last week, I was trolling through his phone and saw a cleavage picture that did not look like mine. I was afraid to say anything. I think we have a happy, healthy marriage but what if we don’t’? – Overreacting? Dear Overreacting Jokingly grab the phone from him tonight when he comes home from work, as though you want to go through the gallery. See what he does. If he hands it over without protest, you obviously do not recognize your own boobs. If, however, he panics, grab
Wise answers to perplexing questions
it when he’s not looking, go to the photo in question and ask him when that shot was taken because you don’t remember it. This is probably much ado about nothing, but why not set your mind at ease? When you’ve worked it out, shake things up a little! Make reservations at Congress Hall for a romantic getaway. Cocktails, dinner, and dancing should ease all your doubts. If you do find out it was another woman’s boobs, you can throw him in the pool and leave him stuck with the bill. It’s all good.
Dear Answer Lady I recently broke up with my 27-yearold boyfriend (10 years younger than I am). After a month, he wanted a reconciliation and so we have been dating again without anything physical. I am tired of that and want to step it up, but I suspect his mother is the obstacle to our intimacy. He seems to find one excuse after the other to not “sleep over” and I’m fed up with it. The last time he couldn’t stay and he said he was going home to watch a boxing match with his mother. What do I do with that? – On Edge Dear On Edge The answer to your problem is simple: find a new boyfriend. There are plenty of MEN out there who would count themselves lucky to date you, men who want you as an equal partner. In the meantime, have some fun with your friends! Plan a shopping spree at Pink and Flying Fish Studios followed by a bar crawl beginning at Delaney’s and ending with dancing the night away at Cabanas. Restore thyself Sunday morning with breakfast at George’s and a lazy day at the beach.

SPOTTY, the Australian Cattle Dog mix, loves to play and go for long walks around the town. This fun-loving boy is looking for a forever home. He would make a great play mate with whom to explore the dunes of Higbees Beach or the streets of cool Cape May.
«
TOBY lived in a family which included four kids (ages 2-10), but sadly, they moved away and could not take Toby with them. This playful, loveable guy is great with cats, other dogs, and kids.
«
MOMMY loves to play, and is particularly fond of squeaky toys. She is friendly to other dogs and wonderful with kids. She can’t wait to show her new family the fun tricks she’s learning at the shelter!

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
L
ove and Mercy follows the life of Beach Boys band leader (for want of a better term) Brian Wilson in both the 1960s, played by Paul Dano, and in his later years, played by John Cusack. This is a remarkable film that explores some of the successes, but mostly the troubles, of this brilliant musician. Some reviews say that you don’t have to understand the Beach Boys culture to get this film. I disagree. Without living with this music growing up and without appreciating its timeless value, I’m not sure you can truly embrace this film. It’s a little too long, it travels down paths that don’t necessarily add to its beauty. All of this you forgive if you want to hum along with God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, and my personal favorite, Sloop John B. And hum along you will—for hours if not days after seeing it. Is that so bad in the summer? Of course not—in fact, the catchy music may be worth the price of admission. When the Beach Boys were really big,
Paul Dano plays a young Brian Wilson in Love and Mercy I was about three years old. Yet in my teen years, I completely appreciated the sounds they put out ten years before. This film documents the man behind the music during his time developing their most honored album, Pet Sounds (1966). The story confirms more than dispels many legends about the composer’s mental state, both back in the 1960s and in later years. Both Dano and Cusack give Oscarworthy performances alongside Elizabeth
Banks as the present-day Wilson’s wifeto-be and Paul Giamatti as the quack doctor trying to control the musician in recent times. During the ride home from the theater, I must have played Sloop John B a dozen times. I won’t hear any of their songs quite the same way after seeing this film. And my summer will be better for it! Hey, a couple of reminders! June 26 we’re screening the film camp films—a free event at Cape May Elementary. On Monday, June 29, join us at Cape May Stage at 8:00 p.m. for the 1960 classic, Please Don’t Eat the Dasies. The film stars Doris Day and David Niven. Four kids in a NYC apartment – time for a change. Did you see Love and Mercy without a thorough understanding of the Beach Boys and their great history of music—and still enjoyed it? In other words, you’re under 30 and you liked the f lick?! Tell me I’m wrong! Send me an email at capemayfilm@hotmail.com and tell me about it!

Bird Droppings
O
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
kay, so maybe June 1 is not prime birding time in Cape May–too late for Spring migration, three weeks too early for fall. But you couldn’t convince the fifteen patrons on this morning’s Monday Morning Meadows Walk of this. The walk, hosted every Monday at 7:30 by Cape May Bird Observatory, is led by yours truly and a host of local experts. In the patrons’ estimation, the one-and-a-halfhour walk was immensely successful. We tallied a total of 53 species during the walk, beginning with crushing views of adult male Orchard Oriole and Blue Grosbeak then finishing with a Mississippi Kite just north of the South Cape May parking lot. This time of year we commonly garner a mix–birds anchored in all seasons like the American Wigeon that are a holdover from winter, the Black Skimmers that are summer breeders and the Semi-palmated Sandpipers that are the last of the spring migrants. Back at CMBO’s Northwood Center, director David LaPuma asked how long we planned to continue the Monday walks.
“All summer,” I cheerfully announced. While Summer is not typically prime time birding over most of North America, this is Cape May, the greatest birding location in the known universe. You owe it to yourself to turn out for a walk and see why bird watchers have been flocking to the Cape for over two hundred years. Alexander Wilson, “The Father of American Ornithology”, made six trips here prior to 1914. He collected Wilson’s Plover, a bird new to science on the beach at South Cape May. Many other celebrated bird watchers
followed, including John James Audubon, Spencer Baird, first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, and David Sibley, who wrote his celebrated field guide to birds in Cape May Point. Maybe you are you the very next birding celebrity to stake their claim in Cape May, NJ? Start by coming on any of the CMBO walks. There’s one almost every day and every habitat type found here. Stop by the Northwood Center (701 East Lake Dr. Cape May Point) for a full schedule. Your lifelong adventure begins next Monday at 7:30 am. Binoculars are available for loan and families are cordially invited. Heck, my lifelong adventure with birds began when I was seven, in a place not half as birdrich as Cape May. We’ll provide the birds. Just think - if you start now, you’ll be perfectly poised to catch fall migration when it starts in late June. I can almost hear the Bobolinks massing overhead... “Bink...bink...bink/bink/bink...”
