Customer Review Why Didn’t We Go There Sooner!

“We were having company from Delaware and wanted to experience a nice lunch on the ocean . We selected Alethea’s due to the fact that they were participating in Restaurant Week for lunch. We had never been there and thought it would be a good time to try it. Boy were we right ! The view was great as well as the service and food. Our sandwiches were spot on for the 2 couples and the French fries which are usually just a side... were amazing! Accompanied with our Bloody Mary’s and Cape May Cosmo, we were a very happy group. Can’t wait to go there for dinner.” - TripAdvisor Review

The Old Fogey

S

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

teady now, people: 80s isn’t hot. 90s are not hot. 100 is just beginning to be warm, but hardly enough for me to remove my lined tweed jacket. I remember General Gordon and I chatting about the weather, back in the Sudan, as spears and bullets whistled over our heads. Our last thermometer had been smashed in hand to hand combat, and I remembered the mercury sizzling and boiling away in the midday sun. Our tin water canteens had all melted and if a soldier made the mistake of standing in the one spot for more than ten seconds, his boots would catch fire. “Feeling the heat, Major D’Catur?” the general said, casually, as he patted out a small fire on the front of his tunic that his glowing hot brass buttons had ignited. “Heat, sah?” I replied (I had affected a fine British accent in those days). “It’s actually a little cold, and as soon as we’ve seen these chaps off,” I gestured toward the waves of attacking tribesmen with my gloved hand, “I was thinking of getting a fire going.” “Good plan, Major,” he said, “I could do

with a cup of hot cocoa right now.” Those words came to mind the other day as I wandered the beach with my bottle of spray suncreen (I say “sunscreen”: in actual fact I have a half dozen spray bottles in my satchell, and I apply a factor suited to the skin type of the sunbather. For example, if there’s a beautifully toned lass or lad baring almost all, I give them a good coating of tanning oil designed to bring them to the perfect golden hue. If I happen on an aesthetically displeasing specimen I might scoosh them with olive oil - extra virgin: I am no cheapskate - so they spend a few days in low-level medical care rather than messing up our fine

beach), misting those bodies that I judged to be higher than “8” on the D’Catur Sun Index (8 is when the skin is lobster red. Above 10 you do NOT want described on a full stomach: suffice of to say, when Cape May’s firefighters receive the “D’Catur Sunburn 10 Alert” call, they respond instantly, and bring a little dustpan and brush. But seriously, if I hear people complain about the heat and the very sand is NOT literally melting to glass under their smoking deckchairs, I will not spare them the silvertopped walking cane. On which, pay no heed to those modern snake-oil-salesmen who masquerade as weather foecasters: the D’Catur Almanac is never wrong, and says that we will manage a week of mild 110 degrees, followed by an actual heatwave that will bake us in our beds. But I do not accept that as an excuse for sloppiness: as General Gordon would have said, “If a man removes his tunic, it better be to remove a bullet from his heart, or to show me a prize sixpack.” (I may have paraphrased a little).

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week let’s go beachcombing!

ou come to Cape May for relaxation, but you may want a more tangible reward for your time here. Comb the beach for tiny treasures to take home. Some people can’t relax while walking on the beach - they need a mission. Tell the kids, or your Type A friends, that you’re going on a treasure hunt. People have been searching for treasures wherever water meets land since time began. In London, the people who eked out a living selling “treasures” they found along the Thames were called “mudlarks.” Children and the elderly would roll up their ragged trousers and wade into the Thames, searching through the eighteenthcentury filth for something useful. Carrying a bag or basket, they gathered bits of coal dropped by the bargemen, washers and rivets that popped off of ships, bits of canvas, floating pieces of wood and even clumps of fat tossed overboard by ships’ cooks. Though it was unskilled labor and they earned a meager living, being a mudlark was an actual occupation as late as 1904. After the

first World War, the term was applied to London schoolchildren who begged tourists to throw coins onto the riverbanks. Today, the “Society of Thames Mudlarks” is a group of amateur archaeologists with a special “licence” to search the Thames mud for historical artifacts, as long as they report their finds to the Museum of London. Though legend says that pirates like Captain Kidd hid treasure in Cape May, you probably won’t find any museum-worthy artifacts along local beaches. You will find fun. You can search the same beach every

day and always find something new. Stroll along the high tide line and search for a pretty souvenir, like a seashell, a bit of driftwood, or sea glass. On the bay beaches, scan the sand for Cape May diamonds, those pieces of quartz Nature has tumbled into little jewels. Reclaim sunglasses, jewelry and coins returned by the sea - just make an effort to find the original owner of anything with real value. Experienced beachcombers recommend searching during off-peak hours and wearing a backpack as you search, so that your own wallet, keys and cell phone don’t join the ranks of lost treasures. Wear work gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and general grossness. Consider borrowing or renting a metal detector to increase your odds of finding pirate booty or a lost Rolex, but wear the headphones to keep the beeps to yourself. Leave living things alone and stay off the dunes. Leave the beach better than you found it by carrying two bags and using one to pick up litter. Next week: Astronomy on the Beach

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wedding is coming up in October and my parents have been very generous — paying for everything from my dress to the honeymoon — but on one point we differ. They want to hire their grandson, my 14-year-old nephew — to be the photographer. I am adamantly opposed to this for obvious reasons. Yes, he has demonstrated a talent but he has never photographed a family gathering. His photos are of beach scenes, not people. I’ve tried to discuss it with my mother, but she insists on having her way. What should I do? – Picture me Blue Dear Blue Either hire your own photographer or get your fiancé to do it. Tell your mother a bride simply cannot have too many photos

Wise answers to perplexing questions

or too many photographers. You could ask your professional to videograph as well, providing a natural reason to hire a second photographer. If your mother has a hissy fit, you will have to put your big girl panties on and thank her for all she has done but firmly and lovingly inform her that this is your wedding wish and that of your fiancé. Meantime, call Aleksey (Exit Zero’s very own photo man) and line up your pro ASAP. Dear Answer Lady I recently broke up with who I thought

was my soul mate. We’d been dating for a year and were about to move in together when she, I guess, got cold feet and ended the relationship. My question is, how long will it take for this pain in my heart to go away. When will I wake up without thinking, just for a few seconds, that she is next to me? – Heartbroken Dear Broken Believe it or not, the pain does go away with time. The Answer Lady guesses that within the month, you will be waking up with hope in your heart instead of remorse. They key is to focus on what makes you happy — note the Answer Lady said “what” not “who”. Try to start finding joy in everyday life. Why not immerse yourself in theater and song? East Lynne Theater’s season will be opening June 17. Cape May Stage and Elaine’s Dinner Theater are already up and running. As for music, nearly every tavern in town offers some form of musical entertainment. By taking your mind off your soul mate, you will allow yourself time to heal and to come out of it ready for love.

«

LEO is a handsome brindle lad with little white toes and a big loving heart. This playful guy is friendly with other dogs and great with kids. He learns quickly, and the volunteers at the shelter have been teaching him basic commands along with some fun tricks. Leo is a real gentleman who loves relaxing in his crate after a day of play.

«

Meet FRANKIE, the squeaky-toy connoisseur who loves a good game of fetch almost as much as he loves hanging out with people. With his intelligence and his happy disposition, Frankie would make a wonderful companion. (As an added bonus, he is fully crate trained!)

«

This lovely lady is PINKY, who came to the shelter as a stray after someone found her sitting under a tree in their yard. Through no fault of her own, she is the longest resident at the shelter. She is an excellent student in the shelter’s CLASS program.

Meet MYRTLE, the sweet older lady who loves to sit on laps and give kisses. She was found roaming the streets and has been at the shelter since October. Myrtle, who is 12 years old, qualifies for the “Senior for Senior” program: if you are 62 or older, her adoption fee is waived.

«

KIRA was surrendered to the shelter when her former family moved away. This beautiful girl would make a wonderful house cat and companion. She loves meeting new people, so stop by the shelter to say hello!

The Movie Column: Double Feature By Dottie Knapp and Marlene Trois of Cape May Film Society

Spy By Dottie Knapp Spy is a new movie from Melissa McCarthy. She is one of my favorite actresses. I love the fact that with one face and with one body she can convey two or three emotions at one time. Watching her be frightened and fierce at the same time is magic. And yes, she does have to portray duel emotions as she starts the movie as a desk jockey intelligence agent who is sent out into the field. The movie isn’t a parody of the Bond films, but it contains many of the elements—in fact, Jude Law plays a Bond-like character. There are a number of chase scenes, a certain amount of colorful language, and some mayhem - in other words a typical action/spy movie. But this movie also has a great deal of humor: McCarthy and Rose Byrne throwing insults at each other, Jason Stratham going over the top as a Rambo type, and Miranda Hart (who plays Chummy in Call the Midwife) positively giddy at being allowed out of the

Left: Melissa McCarthy in Spy, Right: Robertson and Clooney in Tomorrowland office and getting to shoot a gun. There are so many fun characters to watch; Allison Janney never disappoints, and Bobby Cannavale provides eye candy for those who like their guys wise. If you enjoyed Heat and/or Bridesmaids, you will enjoy Spy.

Robertson) finds herself transported to Tomorrowland, a futuristic city with robots and sleek buildings. She is accompanied by scientist Frank Walker (George Clooney), and the two uncover the truth lurking beneath the polished exterior. My hope is that when people watch the movie they see what is going on in the world of the present--the damage of climate change, wars, and power hungry people. In this movie, people did nothing to stop all the destruction--except a young girl with hope. When the battle was won and they began to fix the world, who did they send out to fix it? Children of all cultures, who worked together and rebuilt Tomorrowland. Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Peter Dunne

wo hours. One backyard in the middle of Mauricetown, NJ. You may be aware of the concept of The Big Day — a 24-hour birding marathon during which practitioners attempt to record as many different bird species as possible in a proscribed geographic area — e.g. the State of New Jersey. A “Big Sit” is a big day with a very limited area — one limited to where you begin and end your day. But for those of you who don’t have time for a Big Day or Big Sit, set two hours aside and try a “Little Sit”. Having limited time and mobility and wondering what an off-season Big Sit might produce in a my own backyard, on June 1, a date that typically signals the end of peak bird and birding activity in New Jersey, I grabbed a cup of coffee and staked myself out on a chair on our back porch in Mauricetown . The east facing view offered a 60 degree snatch of landscape and sky. My 6:00am start found three species vying to be first on the list. Candidates included an American Robin, a singing House Wren and 10-30 Chimney

Swifts cutting cookie cutter patterns across the sky. A 6:00am start is admittedly late for a Big Sit but the strategy for a Little Sit is different. With a mere two hours to fill you choose the two most productive hours of the day–the hours bracketing sunrise. Vocalists continued to pad my list until about sunrise when my snatch of open sky began to bear fruit. By 7:00am my count stood at 22 species heard or seen. Nothing unexpected, except for the migrating Common Loon. June 1 is a little late for this species.

With all the common birds accounted for I added a mere seventeen more species in the second hour including Baltimore Oriole, Cedar Waxwing, and Turkey Vulture. In total, I recorded 39 species from an ordinary yard in the middle of a town during off-season - not bad for a postage stamp piece of property. But more than the birds recorded, what fascinated me were the species missed. For example I didn’t hear or see a Laughing Gull, no shorebirds were tallied although some sandpipers were still lingering on the bay. I also managed not to record any ducks or hear the dozen Canada Geese that were breeding less than a mile and a half a way. Later, on my morning walkabout, I heard Indigo Bunting, Prairie Warbler, Yellowbilled Cuckoo, and Belted Kingfisher. But despite their proximity they didn’t make the tally. But here a Little Sit is much like every other Big Day I’ve ever been on. What you remember most are the birds you didn’t get.
