Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

am a huge fan of Game of Thrones. But I would rather restrict my viewing of power-grabbing and Machiavellian plotting to my TV screen. I’d rather NOT see it happen in Cape May. But, sadly, it continues to happen in America’s Original Seaside Resort. The latest development is that the city is now seeking to either fire or demote Lieutenant Chuck Lear, the long-serving policeman whose use of comp time ended in his boss, Rob Sheehan, being demoted from his position as Chief of Police. I’ve written a lot about the demotion of Chief Sheehan since he was knifed in the back, Caesar style, in March. But I guess I never cease to be amazed at the audacity of this administration and disgusted by the depths they plumb. If you read Susan Tischler’s Inside City Hall column (it begins on the next page), you will see that Councilmember Jack Wichterman introduced a vote at the last city council meeting, asking that Sheehan be reinstated as Chief of Police. That vote failed, since the council was tied 2-2 (Terri Swain was absent). This was a very frustrating turn of events.

BIRD

IS THE WORD A CAPE MAY CARTOON

It’s been very clear to me from the start that Sheehan should NEVER have been demoted and that such action was predicated upon a falsehood — that he was responsible for Lieutenant Lear’s comp time arrangement. This was, in fact, an arrangement that Sheehan inherited from his predecessor, Diane Sorantino. And let’s be clear here — no matter how much City Manager Bruce MacLeod tells the world that he didn’t know about the arrangement, that’s just inconceivable. Lear’s arrangement has been in place for a decade. And MacLeod is the man who

signs off on those paychecks, the man whose job it is to oversee Cape May’s various departments. So it continues to disgust me that two good men, Rob Sheehan and Chuck Lear, are continuing to be dragged through the mud because of... actually, no one seems to know why MacLeod and the mayor, Ed Mahaney, decided to turn on Sheehan and Lear. But what IS clear to me is that if they have their way, the CMPD is going to turn into a nest of vipers, where trust and morale will exist in small portions. Which is exactly what Mayor Mahaney wants. Word is, he’s been whispering in the ears of certain police officers who may desire the chief’s job. And then the mayor would have exactly what he wants... a police chief he can control. Which wasn’t the case with Sheehan. There is, of course, a lot more going on here than this rather simplistic explanation. But I think it’s important to remember the bottom line — we have a devious, unscrupulous administration that’s lying and bullying its way to an endgame that should worry any right-headed citizen. Folks, we need a new king on the throne.

Inside City Hall

The news from yet another contentious Cape May City Council meeting... by Susan Tischler

A

s though things weren’t contentious enough at city council meetings these days, a resolution was introduced at the June 16 meeting regarding public comments. The proposed resolution would limit each speaker to five minutes and to one turn at the podium, but they could approach council during public hearings and before resolutions are voted upon to ask questions about proposed resolutions and ordinances. But the speaker would not be permitted to “quiz” council members at the public comment portion, but only be permitted to comment on a matter at hand. Finally, the speaker would be required to keep a civil tongue in his/her head. The funny thing about this resolution is that there was already a policy in place limiting public comment at the end of the council meeting to five minutes. The policy, as I understand it, was either started or reimplemented when Jerry Inderwies, Sr was mayor to limit the ever frequent and loquacious Christine Miller. In those years, the former

city clerk carried an egg timer with her to remind Mrs Miller that her time was up. So, the five-minute rule merely needed to be enforced which is the mayor’s domain. I’m guessing someone — and the mayor said it wasn’t he — felt because of the lack of civility at council meetings recently, the issue needed to be hammered home. Whatever the source or the motivation, it stirred the natives. Council saw more in attendance than usual, although several were there regarding the brouhaha surrounding the renewal of Carney’s liquor

license. It seems the renewal was predicated on conditions. The Carney’s matter, however, was tabled. City Solicitor Tony Monzo said the matter was being negotiated and indicated a resolution regarding the conditions was being pursued. A number of people stepped up to the podium to speak vigorously against approval of the proposed resolution, among them, the often disgruntled Charlie and Tricia Hendricks. Tricia spoke for nearly 10 minutes on the subject. After the meeting, I overheard one lawyer say that he thought she quite ably made the case in favor of the resolution, instead of against it, which was her aim. I did not exactly see it that way, but that aside, she maintained that council meetings were a key source of “accessibility” for the public and rhetorically asked, “What other business do you have other than to listen to the public?” Denny deSatnick said, “I’m appalled at both sides of the table and at the lack of respect.” He concluded, “I don’t like the direction this

INSIDE CITY HALL From Page 15 resolution is going.” After everyone spoke, another funny thing happened — the mayor recommended that, because seven people spoke against Resolution 14506-2015 and because it was never his idea to begin with, the proposal be deleted with the caution that he was letting everyone off on good behavior. The “audience” was delighted with this happy ending and just as they were getting ready to stand up, hold hands and sing “Kumbaya,” Councilmember Jack Wichterman leaned into the mic and surprised everyone. Wichterman wanted to talk about the controversy surrounding the demotion of CMPD Chief Rob Sheehan. He noted that the problem of comp time, which is at issue with long-time Lieutenant Chuck Lear and which resulted in the rescinding of Sheehan’s position in March, goes back to 2007. He said it “would still be a deep, dark secret” if the Police Benevolent Association’s (PBA) formal complaint had not brought the matter to light. He said “this has been going on for a lot of years” and therefore, “outdates Rob Sheehan” who came on as chief just last year. “I know we have other issues,” he said, “but I think one thing that could be settled tonight… I’m going to offer a resolution that Sheehan be reinstated.” Councilmember Shaine Meier seconded the resolution and there they were with an unexpected vote in front of them. In the senate or in congress, a controversial vote usually isn’t brought to the floor unless the person sponsoring the motion is pretty sure he or she has the votes. With the absence of Deputy Mayor Terri Swain, did Wichterman think he had the votes of the majority of council? Or did he not care, possibly reckoning that it was worth a shot? Or did he feel badly about

something which was going on under his watch during his 20102014 council tenure? The vote failed in a 2-2 tie. And that put Bea Pessagno under the spotlight. In casting her nay vote, Pessagno said,” If we don’t uphold the law and the police department doesn’t uphold the law, who will?” During the new and improved public comment portion of the meeting, former CMPD Chief Bob Boyd took to the mic to ask Pessagno what she knew that the other two councilmen, (Meier and Wichterman) don’t. She said, “I really don’t know what they know, but I know what I know” and “comp time is patently illegal and at some point we have to deal with that.” When asked by Chief Boyd to define “illegal,” Pessagno held up the state comptroller’s 2014 report. Charlie Hendricks congratulated council and the mayor in particular, for deleting the public comment resolution and “walking it back.” “There are a lot of things we could walk back,” he said imploring council to relook at the Lear-Sheehan situation with different eyes, noting that most of the people in the room were there in support of Sheehan and would continue to be until the matter is resolved. He also took a shot at former CMPD Sergeant and 2012 mayoral candidate Rusty Chew who, along with the PBA, filed a complaint against the comp time issue; “What we have here is a retired sergeant who needs to get a life.” And so it goes, nearly July Fourth and the fireworks continue. In another move sure to displease the restless, City Council returned following closed session and passed a resolution directing City Manager Bruce MacLeod to issue disciplinary charges against Lieutenant Chuck Lear regarding the use of compensatory time. The motion passed in a 4-0 vote. City Hall wags said the papers were served on the veteran officer Thursday.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

was watching that excellent televised documentary, “Game of Thrones”, on videotape (Betamax: I am not convinced of the supposed wonder of “VHS” no matter what the youngsters say) and was struck by a few thoughts. One: Cape May City politics are way more dramatic than those of Westeros. Two: we need an Iron Throne in City Hall, to give the Mayor’s office some gravitas, and Three: Albert is fixated on being a Dire Wolf, despite my reminding him that in the end, that Snow boy, who clearly knows nothing, was let down by his own wolf. Still, Albert, who has never truly accepted the mortal body the gods gave him and refuses to have a mirror in the house lest he be reminded of his Yorkshire Terrier appearance, is determined that he will be one of those imposing wolves. To that end, he has taken to dropping bottles of bleach as well as volumising shampoo. into my shopping basket at ACME. I fear that when the day comes we are coereced into dying him and pouffing him up (it

takes a strong man to defy the will of a Yorkie for long: they need blink only once a week, and those eyes are little gateways to hell) he will resemble nothing so much as a dandelion seed, and blow out of an open window, but still, I am not one to deny a dog his destiny. Of course, I see some similarities in people in town and those real-life GOTR (I am very much “down” with the lingo) people. We all know a senior civic official who is uncannily like King Joffrey, and I cannot meet this very newspaper’s Editor without instinctively whispering “King

Robert! Do not go on that boar hunt!” And as for me? Well clearly I am more of that short-lived but astounding “Drogo” fella. Actually, I have taken the liberty of commissioning that aforementioned throne for the city. Of course, Cape May is not so much a sword-fighting town as a culinary and hospitality city and so I have swapped out the blades for spoons. The overall effect is much the same, I think: the throne is still impressive, but one is far less likely to cut oneself on it. In fact, the spoons have much of the effect of one of those massage chairs, and I like to think that the next Mayor will be all the better for the benefit of a relaxing session on it, at least until the Wildwoodings storm the wall, anyways, intent on plunder, pillage and free saltwater taffy, the devils. Anyway, I am off to patrol the kingdom. And remember: as we say here: Winter is Coming, After a Nice Hot Summer and a Profitable Fall with lots of cider and then Halloween.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week it’s stargazing on the beach!

n your next trip to Cape May, visit the beach at night. Adults enjoy the peaceful beauty of the nighttime beach, but kids really love it. For parents, a night trip to the beach is a lot easier than a day trip. You don’t need sunscreen, hats, and umbrellas. Nobody is going swimming, so you can get away with one towel to wipe off everybody’s feet when you’re done. Just stroll and let the kids run around with a fair amount of freedom. When you return to your hotel room, they will go right to sleep - at least that’s the wish you make upon your first star. Teaching your kids about the nighttime sky is a lot of fun. Why does the moon look different every night? Why are there so many more stars in Cape May than in the city? Where does the sun go? Don’t worry if you don’t know the answers - parents have always made up stories to explain the sky. You may be most familiar with the legends of Greeks and Romans - the Gemini twins spend half the year in the underworld, the ship Argo is memorialized in the sky, and

Canis Major and Minor represent an eternal fox-and-hound chase. A visit to Cape Atlantic Book Company or the Nature Center will yield star stories from other cultures - the four dragons of China, the Cheyenne story of the girl who married a dog, Japanese stories of kimono sleeves in the stars. Let the Harry Potter fans discover and share the stories of Sirius and Draco. If you prefer science to stories, you can find free apps like Star Chart and Sky View Free, print out a star chart from the PBS website, or let an expert help. Join the Nature Center

for “Astronomy on the Beach” on July 14 or July 21 at 9 p.m. They will teach you about the “phases of the moon, the planets that make up our solar system, and a few stories behind your favorite constellations.” Meet at the Beach Avenue pavilion before walking out to the cove. $5 per person, children under 3 are free. Call 609-898-8848 or visit www.njaudubon.org/centers/nccm for more information. Bring sweatshirts, because the beach can get chilly at night. Be prepared to see critters moving about on the sand, but they won’t bother you. Binoculars can be helpful, whether you want a better look at the Andromeda Galaxy or at Delaware. You probably won’t need bug spray, thanks to the sea breeze. Later, kids can recreate constellations with black paper and white chalk, or mini-marshmallows or gummy candies and toothpicks. You can probably pick up some toothpicks at Collier’s Liquor Store, along with a bottle of wine for the grown-ups to enjoy while the kids are dreaming of Orion. Next week: Fireworks

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Our baby is due in August and my husband and I still cannot agree on the name. We are having a boy and I want to name him after my father, but my husband is Jewish and says we cannot name after the living. Therefore, he says we should name him after his grandfather, Mordechai. Apparently, it means warrior, but what would his nickname be? Mordy? My father’s name is Adam. That’s a solid Old Testament name. What should I do Answer Lady? I don’t want to cause waves or be disrespectful, but I also don’t want my son to be stuck with an unwieldy ancestral handle. – Nameless Dear Nameless The point here, if you choose to honor your husband’s beliefs, is to not name after

Wise answers to perplexing questions

the living. The Answer Lady thinks it is a mistake to disregard that fact. So if not Mordechai or Adam, why not choose another name of a beloved ancestor that you both approve of? Plan a romantic dinner at the Ebbitt Room followed by a walk on the beach and talk it out. And while you’re talking, you’d better decide whether it will be a bris, a baptism, or neither following the baby’s birth. Dear Answer Lady My fiancé recently broke it off with me

and I cannot get over it. I find myself driving past his house to see if his car is in the driveway. I’ve tried texting him, asking what I did wrong, but he ignores my texts. I’d like to find out where he’ll be Friday night and would like to ask his friends so I can see if this is about another woman. Should I trust his friends to tell me? – A Woman Scorned Dear Scorned The Answer Lady is sympathetic to your pain but you must stop this. Why give one person that much power over your life? That is not love. Do not contact his friends. They won’t cooperate anyway. Nor should they. Stop the texting – it is harassment. Start thinking about YOU not HIM. Sometimes things just don’t work out for whatever reason. The reason is irrelevant. It is too early for you to move on, but it is not too early to start the healing process. One way to start is to join Yoga Cape May which meets on the beach at Convention Hall and at Cape May Point. Then you need to check into either the Well Center or Cape May Day Spa for a cleansing, both of the mind and the body.

CHASE graduated with honors from the shelter’s C.L.A.S.S. (canine life and social skills) training program, and is fully crate trained. He gets along well with dogs and kids. Chase is a very polite boy and has a lot of love to give.

«

This lovely lady is PINKY, who came to the shelter as a stray after someone found her sitting under a tree in their yard. Through no fault of her own, she is the longest resident at the shelter. She is an excellent student in the shelter’s CLASS program.

«

JETER is a spunky, 6 month old Jack Russell Terrier/Beagle mix. He is small in stature, but full of energy to play ball and run in the yard. Jeter lived happily with a family including children so he would adjust nicely to a family setting.

PAUL has been waiting patiently here at the shelter since 6/19/12. When he came in he was very nervous, but has been making major progress. He is a long way off from being an affectionate lap cats, but with love and patience in a real home, he could be! Paul is up to date on all vaccines, neutered, and his adoption fee is only $35.

«

PHYLLO was dumped at the Cape May County Zoo before being picked up by the shelter. Given a safe, quiet home and a lot of love, Phyllo is sure to be a loving companion.

ogue dinosaur eats minor secondary character, huge pre-historic nostril blows dangerously close to main characters, car falls upside down on would-be victims (thank goodness it fell with the open side facing down!). Have we seen all of this somewhere before? Sure we did. In all the other Jurassic Park movies—but this time was different. How you ask? Well… well… Oh, so what! The new Jurassic World movie wasn’t that much different from all the others. It was still a kick to watch! It’s been 14 years since the last Jurassic Park movie, and by that last film the park was already a wreck of a ghost town. I rewatched that last installment, and it still holds up as great fun. Well it is 2015 people, and Jurassic World is open for business! Or should I say Jurassic Resort! Since we’ve been away, the former shell of a park is now an adventure wonderland. It’s part Sea World with a crazy-big, scaly sea creature. It’s

That’s no abandonned ice cream cone, that’s a dinosaur tooth! also a wild life kingdom with pods where you can scoot around with the dinosaurs. Heck, there’s even a petting zoo where the kids can ride baby dinosaurs. Oh how cute! Not only that, there are mega hotels and spas, shop till you drop outlets, and $7 sodas (they quoted the price in the film— funny, that’s how much I paid for my soda when I went to see the movie!). I mean, c’mon, it’s the perfect island getaway. That is, until the genetically modified

T-Rex gets loose. Oh, you didn’t see that in the brochure? Yeah, there’s this T-Rex all bulked up on more ‘roids than A-Rod—the scientists created this monster in the lab as the next big attraction. It’s huge, and it’s nasty. And one thing leads to another, and well… you know… it gets out of its cage. With an A-Rod T-Rex (A-Rex) running amuck, our main characters (played by the hunky Chris Pratt and the darling Bryce Dallas Howard) leap into hot pursuit. The reason, Howard’s nephews (played by Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson) are smack dab in the middle of the A-Rex’s path. If you’re not a dinosaur person, you probably realize by now that these movies are not for you. And despite scenes depicting aforementioned secondary characters getting eaten alive, the violence really is not all that bad or gratuitous. So if you even remotely liked the Jurassic series so far, you’ll love this one. It provides the story, the punch, and thrills of all the rest—plus some!

f you walk through the South Cape May Meadows you are sure to see a bunch of ragged looking ducks all hauled out on the banks. These are mallards, our most common year-round puddle duck. I know they don’t look like Mallards... That’s the point of this article. The birds are in what’s called eclipse: a cryptic transitional plumage that gives way to a fresh set of classic mallard feathers. Even the green heads of adult male mallards are eclipsed during this transitional molt. The birds can’t fly and they can’t swim without getting water logged. That’s why they’re sitting on the banks. This complete molt strategy works for some species, but not others. Songbirds and raptors that are dependant upon their wings to find food molt gradually, replacing feathers a few at a time over the course of many months. The eclipse strategy is risky because if a duck cannot swim or fly it is vulnerable to predation. The ducks of Cape May face few aerial

predators and water separates them from human traffic, letting them feel safe and secure. By August they’ll be in spiffy new feathers, just in time for courtship and pair bonding in the fall. I recall one year when a dozen Black Scoter spent the summer on the beach at South Cape May. These winter residents should have been in the Arctic breeding - why they lingered is anyone’s guess. But come late summer, the molt sequence caught up with them. The whole gang waddled up into the tern

colony where they were unmollested by beach strollers and their dogs. They spent most of their days sitting quietly to keep from drawing attention to themselves and to direct their energy reserves to feather generation. The all at once strategy is also dependant upon having young that are highly precocial– i.e. able to take care of themselves during the adult’s annual down time. All at once or one by one. Two different strategies that keep birds in good repair, ready for flight, ready for whatever the weather throws at them. Ready to delight human admirers with their colorful array. So if you happen to bump into a ratty looking duck that is unable to fly. Just give it a little privacy; it’s changing clothes. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to Birding Short Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
