Come visit West Cape May where you’ll find a lovely historic district consisting of 19th-Century and early 20th-Century wooden cottages unlike the large, ornate Victorian structures found in Cape May City. View the beautiful colonial revival, tri-cabled Queen Anne and Federal style homes. We have an edgy side as well, so come see what that is all about — experience exciting shops, exquisite local cuisine, luxurious services and much more. Visit www.westcapemaytoday.com and then come to WEST CAPE MAY. UPCOMING EVENT... West Cape May Farm Market at the “Backyard” Park, Municipal Complex, 732 Broadway. The market is now open through September 1, Tuesdays 3:00-7:30pm. Look for many stands with fresh veggies, herbs and flowers, as well as vendors offering a variety of unique wares. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have always loved the smell of gunpowder in the morning. I first got wind of it (did you see what I did there?) back in The Orient, when I was trading Cape May diamonds for Chinese silk, and some chap was firing off firecrackers to entertain the royal court. “Very nice!” I declared, adding casually: “and no use at ALL for anything save cheap entertainments …” as I surreptitiously pocketed an unlit one for study back home. Within a month of return I had established in Cape May the first (and therefore largest) industrial gunpowder works in the entire world. From dawn until dusk, the background noise here was of thunderous reports as our prototype canons were developed, and the occasional shriek as we had on of those “two steps forward one step back” moments. Of course, it all went wrong one July 4, when one of our town’s dancing bears paused for a cigarillo break and tossed the smoldering butt in the air, to be wafted by the onshore wind into a veritable mountain
of gunpowder (we used to dry it in the warm air). Looking back, it was a fine spectacle, and did of course begin the whole tradition of fireworks on July 4, but at the time, it was all a little scary as we dodged falling artillery shells and the score of fully laden gunpowder carts whose horses and camels (don’t ask) panicked at the smoke and set off at a gallop, spreading the f lames. The next morning, when the smoke finally cleared, we of course had to pretend the whole thing was intentional, and that once again Cape May was at the cut-
ting (indeed, exploding) edge of entertainment inventions, and quietly focus on less incendiary industries. But still, the morning after the July 4 fireworks, when I survey our gem of a city from atop the D’Catur Mansion’s tallest tower, with a medicated Young Albert by my side (he detests explosions and fireworks, ever since that time his collar snagged on a 300lbs rocket and he was sent into low orbit over Philly), and I detect the faint whiff of spent powder, sweat and singed hair, I am taken by no small nostalgia, and it usually takes the best efforts of my faithful manservant Kitchener to stop me from rolling out our railway gun and firing a few rounds into the air to prolong the excitement. I am assured it can send a round weighing a ton all the way to Ocean City, but of course I would never dream of actually doing such a thing, unless provoked. Or bored. Or allowed to, just as one-off experiment that we would not ever talk about again.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, treat yourself at the spa!
our visitors have gone, and you all had a lovely time in Cape May. There is hardly any evidence that you had guests, except for that overloaded trash can, and the spasm in your jaw from biting your tongue. Now is the time to book that massage. In this era of quick-fix pills and technological remedies, the simple power of the human touch can be potent. Massage therapy is scientifically proven to relieve stress, anxiety and muscle aches. It may relieve headaches, digestive troubles, and insomnia. Even if it doesn’t, it makes you feel terrific. I visited the Sea Spa at Congress Hall, 200 Congress Place. This spa is located on one end of the historic hotel, and offers a soothing spot of quiet in the midst of the summer bustle. Don your cozy robe and wait in the Relaxation Room or in an adirondack chair on the patio before your treatment, or indulge in a steam bath in the small steam room. You enter and sit, convinced that you are too antsy to relax, that you couldn’t pos-
sible just sit there and breathe, but you do, and suddenly, your cares melt away. Then it is time to enter the treatment room, which looks like the inside of a beach tent. (Sea Spa also offers special massages on the beach in an actual beach tent.) The massage therapist introduces herself and directs you to recline, and all you hear are the customized sounds you pre-selected. Any awkwardness you expect fails to materialize as the professional takes over. She gently moves your head slightly to the left, and you discover that that is exactly where
your head needed to be. She skillfully rubs your aches and pains away. After the massage, take a shower and change in the locker room before treating yourself to lunch at the Blue Pig. Now, your aggravation is forgotten and that family visit has become a happy memory. There are several options for massage in Cape May, and most require a reservation. You can usually request a male or female therapist - you will be naked for most treatments, but there is nothing immodest about the experience. Arrive about twenty minutes early. It’s better not to overeat before a massage, and avoid alcohol. Cape May Day Spa, at 607 Jefferson Street offers midweek specials. The Well Center for Massage has two locations. Visit 110 North Broadway in West Cape May for a traditional massage, and the Well2 (Well Squared) at Carpenter’s Square Mall for a chair massage or Table Tune-Up. Accent on Beauty, 128 Sunset Boulevard, West Cape May, will make you feel like royalty with the Queen Bee massage. Next week: Antique Autos

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I dated a man for four years. We went to every restaurant in town and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. In the spring I had to have a knee operation and he said he would take care of me. I didn’t hear from him one week leading up to the operation. One morning his daughter, who is very close to me, showed up at my door to tell me that he met another woman two weeks before and had asked her to marry him, which he did last week. He’s very wealthy, he said he always wanted to date someone shorter than he and that she was in financial need.. Then he gave me a list of restaurants I can no longer go to, because it would cause his new wife, “embarrassment” and “distress” to see me there - one of which is my absolute favorite, Cinco De

Mayo. What do you think of that Answer Lady? – Left standing out in the cold. Dear Cold; Warm up, dear. The Answer Lady thinks you are the luckiest girl in the world. As to your former companion’s list of demands? You dress yourself up. Grab some handsome man and march your sassy butt right on into ALL of the taboo restaurants, especially Cinco De Mayo. When you see the happy couple, give them a huge smile and make sure you let them both know, you have
moved on and delight in the fact that you are viewed as a threat. Dear Answer Lady; My in-laws were staying with us, which they do quite often in the summer because we live near the beach. They were supposed to be at the beach all afternoon and my husband and I decided to have a little afternoon delight. My mother-in-law decided to come back early and walked right into our bedroom without knocking. Now in all fairness, the door was not completely shut, BUT… Of course, she marched right down to the beach and told my father-in-law, and now I’m getting the cold shoulder, Do I apologize for the sin of loving their son? — Flagrante delicto Dear Flagrante Awkward. She is probably in shock and that visual will not leave her for a really, really long time. But, no you have nothing to apologize for. Adults simply should not barge into other people’s bedrooms. That said, what to do? I think a trip to Henry’s Jewelry is in order. That and time — lots of time — should heal the wound.

CHASE graduated with honors from the shelter’s C.L.A.S.S. (canine life and social skills) training program, and is fully crate trained. He gets along well with dogs and kids. Chase is a very polite boy and has a lot of love to give.
«
SPOTTY, the Australian Cattle Dog mix, loves to play and go for long walks around the town. This fun-loving boy is looking for a forever home. He would make a great play mate with whom to explore the dunes of Higbees Beach or the streets of cool Cape May.

This lovely lady is PINKY, who came to the shelter as a stray after someone found her sitting under a tree in their yard. Through no fault of her own, she is the longest resident at the shelter. She is an excellent student in the shelter’s CLASS program.

CHARLOTTE loves to play! Before she came to the shelter, Charlotte lived on the streets. But even then she wanted to be in a loving home - she was always trying to get into peoples’ houses. This lovable young lady would make a great companion.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
I
ris Apfel, the eccentric, 93-year-old fashionista, is the subject of the documentary Iris. Iris wears color and accessories like any 20-something model. She is the epitome of f lamboyant. Her career has spanned decades, and she is a sought after speaker and fashion commentator. With signature oversized glass frames she leads us through her life of style with the ease of a runway diva. The film was made by acclaimed documentarian Albert Maysles, who passed away this past spring at the age of 88. He was an Emmy Award winning and Oscar nominated director. The film has gained much critical and audience acclaim--all well-deserved. Iris and her husband Carl are certainly a trip. Although taking a tour of their homes and work and lives is entertaining, there were some scenes I would have liked to see more developed. For example, one scene pairs Iris with a teenage fashion maven/ celebrity. I would have like to see the two
The one-of-a-kind fashionista Iris Apfel is the subject of Albert Maysles’ last documentary of them interact more. Throughout the entire film, you border on being captivated by this icon. You border on what could be truly deep exploration of what it means to maintain a work ethic for decades after the Great Depression. You border on what passes for fashion and understanding what it means to hold the art community in the palm of your hand. Your time on the border isn’t bad (in fact, it’s good), but you just want there to be more in the end.
The film is short (and thank goodness it is—otherwise I may have walked out). At just a little over an hour, just as you begin to think you’ve seen enough of Iris, it’s over. But for the right audience, this will be a remarkable film. If you’re into fashion, if you know anything about Iris or enjoy her eclectic style, then you will not be disappointed when you rent this DVD (good luck finding this one in theaters). Thanks to everyone who attended the film camp screenings recently. The films from camp will be uploaded to our website, and we’ll let you know when they’re up. Meantime, check out the August 3 film society presentation at Cape May Stage of All of Me, the 1984 comedy where a guru goofs and Edwina (Lily Tomlin) winds up taking over the right side of Roger (Steve Martin). And on August 9, it is the silent 1926 classic The General with live organ music at East Lynne Theater Company. No reservations needed. Email us at capemayfilm@hotmail.com for all upcoming shows and presentation.

Bird Droppings
H
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ere we are in “tween time.” The season between seasons. Summer is over the hill. The sun is already in the downhill slide that will culminate in the Winter Solstice. Local breeding birds are wrapping things up, calling it a season. As promised in my last column, the local Willets have pulled out of the station. They’re heading south right on schedule. Robins and House Wrens, too, have first broods already on the wing. Yet small flocks of Double-crested Cormorants can still be seen heading north. These non-breeders are still responding to Spring’s migratory urge, the same urge that propelled thousands of cormorants north last April. Other tardy Spring runners-up include the odd group of Cedar Waxwings, the occasional late season Broad-winged Hawk, and the thousands of Sooty and Great Shearwaters that are migrating up the Atlantic Coast now. To breed? No, to feed. These pelagic birds breed in the South Atlantic. Their breeding season over, they’re heading for the Grand
Banks to feast on the seasonal abundance of fish. Then return via the Eastern Atlantic come fall. The first southbound shorebirds are already en route. Lesser Yellowlegs and Short-billed Dowitchers have likewise finished breeding. They’ll be packing into Cape May’s marshes by the last week in June, like the Shearwaters, drawn to the seasonal abundance of food. But northbound or southbound, Cape May is the binding link; July the month that blends
Spring and Fall. Care to run your fingers through the river of birds? Come on a Cape May Bird Observatory morning field trip. Local leaders get you on target and keep score. If you’ve never watched birds before, so much the better. The only thing better than being an experienced bird watcher is being an inexperienced one. Me? I’ve been a beginning birder my whole life, years 1-6 excepted. So absolutely bring the kids. While almost any seaside resort can offer sun, beaches and waves, how many places lie at the crossroads of seashore bird migration? Discovery it’s all around you. But you need to meet it halfway and don’t dawdle Spring is nearly over and Autumn won’t last forever. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to Birding Short Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
