BEST BREAKFAST EXPERIENCE ANYWHERE! “First off, we had the nicest waitress ever last Friday morning 7/3/15. Would guess 40-50s with short brownish slightly reddish hair. I’m mad that I don’t remember her name to be able to credit her. So personable and actually talked to my kids. Food was good but add it to a charming decor and friendly waitstaff and ‘bam!’ you have amazing.” - Tripadvisor Review

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do like good manners, as you all know. A gentleman should not curse in public during daylight hours, unless for comedic effect or in great rage, and he should limit his swearing to one word per sentence, ideally at the end, with an exclamation after, to allow a short period for people to appreciate the word’s usage. (The same applies to ladies, of course: the late and sometimes-lamented Ma D’Catur was a major proponent of the Cursagette Movement and could make a sailor pass out from shock). But cursing is not for amateurs, any more than a fine malt or a loaded Colt ‘45. In fact, Cape May has a City Ordnance that states “the visitor to this town who uses profanity without art is legally required to be struck in the head with a blunt object of no more than 2lbs weight and containing no animal products”. This is a mandatory sentence, I should add, and just one of the many good reasons I carry a heavy silver-topped walking cane (there are 23 reasons in total, all of which are

significant, including #8: Protection from Werewolves to #21: The Melting Down of The Silver Eagle from Hitler’s Bunker To Make a Point). I had cause to bring this up just the other day, when I witnessed a disagreement between two Shoebies over a parking space. It was a a grim exchange, devoid of wit or humor, and littered with careless f-bombs. I listened with heavy heart, before stepping forward and advising both of the huge oafs to simmer down. Their replies were predicatbly coarse, and so with a sad sigh and the whistle of ex-

Nazi silver I felled one, and as the second slammed his car door shut I smoothly slid Young Albert through the closing window, with a command of “Philly!” That one word sends Albert into a Canine Rage like no other, and any man who has seen a Yorkie berserker knows better than to laugh. I waited for a few seconds for a small horrified-but-fascinated crowd to assemble before delivering the precision tirade that follows (all profane words have been replaced witn dots to protect the innocent): “You think you’re ........ clever, with your ..... little ....... car, but .... .. if you are anything more than a ..... with ....... ...... ...... off and don’t ......... look back.” Well, there was a brief shocked silence, the sound of a scattering of people fainting and an intake of breath so sharp that my wig was sucked off. The artful demonstration was wasted on the Shoebies, of course, one being unconscious and one being in need of medical care. “Cape ....... May!” I sighed happily, to applause.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, check out antique automobiles!

mericans have been in love with the automobile for more than 100 years. See a piece of that love story on July 18 at the Jersey Cape Antique Auto Show at Rotary Park in Cape May. My father tells stories of his ’41 Plymouth. It was a simple car, and it was fourteen years old when he bought it, but he loved it. In that Plymouth, the first car his family had ever owned, he took his parents back to see the Statue of Liberty for the first time since they immigrated from Ireland. He drove his siblings to the beach and his friends to parties, making memories that draw a smile sixty years later. In 1981, I learned to drive my brother’s Ford, with mismatched door panels and a tendency to stall in the rain. I took my little sister to the new McDonald’s drive thru and drove away without the food, as if it were a toll booth. She’s still laughing. Those are the kinds of memories that draw people to auto shows. A ’55 Chevy brings to mind car hops and saddle shoes. A ’66 Mustang reminds you of the Beach Boys.

A ’78 Trans Am reminds you of that Farrah Fawcett poster. And yes, that Lincoln Town Car you drooled over in 1990 now qualifies as an antique. Even the minivan you bought in 2005 is old enough to be a classic. Among the 40 cars parked on the grass surrounding the gazebo at Rotary Park, you’ll find one to spark a memory, and you’ll have a chance to talk to someone who shares it. The cars are in competition, but it’s all very friendly, with categories like “Best PreWar,” “Best Hot Rod,” and “Driver’s Choice.” The car owners, members of the Antique

Automobile Club of America, are committed to the “preservation and enjoyment of automotive history of all types.” Most are enthusiastic about their hobby, and eager to share details of where they found their car and how they preserved it. You’ll have a chance to learn something. For example, before 1949, the Ford Motor Company really did label its two-door cars as “tudors,” and four-door cars at “fordors.” It was a marketing move, designed to sound classy. In addition to the Jersey Cape Antique Auto Show on July 18 from 10 to 2, there is the Annual Classic and Antique Car Show at Historic Cold Spring Village, Saturday and Sunday, August 15 and 16, from 11 to 3. Kids and adults - should wait to be invited before touching anything - fingerprints could cost someone a trophy. Be polite in expressing your admiration and keep your criticism to yourself. Keep food and drink away from the cars. Take pictures, respectfully. You aren’t Tawny Kitaen and this isn’t a Whitesnake video. (Ask your mother.) Next week: Light your Fire

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am desperate to get my daughter potty trained before September. She is two-anda-half years old and the day care center won’t take her if she is not potty trained. I’ve tried everything and she stubbornly resists. In fact, she uses her potty to stand on so she can reach the sink. What do you suggest Answer Lady? - Who’s training who? Dear Who’s Training The Answer Lady faced this dilemma herself some years back. “Megan,” I said, “The Answer Lady doesn’t do diapers. So, here’s what I’ll do. I’ll go to Lynn Arden’s Children’s Shop and buy you the prettiest pair of panties you ever saw, if you start using the potty.” She thought a minute, and asked for Barbie panties. Done, done and

Wise answers to perplexing questions

done. I would suggest you do the same. If that doesn’t work, try taking her on a shopping spree and let her pick her own panties. If might allow her to feel more in control. Dear Answer Lady My bridesmaids recently held a bridal shower for me at the Ebbitt Room. My future sister-in-law, who is not in the bridal party by her own choice, attended. After the shower, my maid-of-honor helped me organize the gifts so I could start writing thankyou cards. We discovered that all my panties

and all the bottles of wine I received were missing. I called my bridesmaids and they said my future sister-in-law was seen putting them into a bag and taking them to HER car. When I called her about it, she admitted taking them and refused to give them back. My fiancé and his parents promised to replace the gifts but said, “She does that sometimes.” How is that acceptable behavior? My suggestion that she not be invited to wedding was immediately dismissed as unacceptable. Fortunately, my bridesmaids got on social media and outed her. As a result, she returned the gifts begging me to call off my posse, which I did, but now what? How do we move forward? – Raided Dear Raided Tough one. The Answer Lady fears you might just have to grin and bear it – for the next 40 years or so. But your posse had your back and she might think twice about picking up your panties again. As to moving forward – try making her your best friend. In keeping with the Godfather – “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”

Your Voice Matters We urge those of you who are registered to vote in the City of Cape May to sign the Petition to Recall Mayor Mahaney, and help put an end to all the poor decisions and wasteful spending of taxpayer money. Mayor Mahaney’s inappropriate actions have led to multiple lawsuits against the city and terrible consequences for our Police Chief, the entire police department, city employees in the Tourism Utility and elsewhere, along with local business owners and the residents of Cape May. Our Mayor continues to exceed his authority, in violation of local and state law, which has forced the County Prosecutor to get involved and threaten to take control of the Cape May Police Department. Well over a million dollars in taxpayer money has been wasted on lawyers, while the Fire Department has had to struggle for years just to get one extra firefighter per shift. The Mayor continues to use Cape May’s government to pursue personal grudges against local business owners and residents. The City of Cape May needs you — and the time to take action is now! Please join your neighbors in signing the Petition to Recall Mayor Mahaney, by contacting one of the Committee members below... «

JETER is a young, spunky, Jack Russell Terrier/Beagle mix. He is small in stature, but full of energy to play ball and run in the yard. Jeter lived happily with a family including children so he would adjust nicely to a family setting.

«

PUPPY is a six-year-old mastiff mix. He loves to play fetch in the yard, politely returning the ball to continue the game endlessly. Puppy lived peacefully with other dogs until his family became too ill to care for him. He is an extraordinarily affectionate and gentle dog who would make a loving addition to any family.

«

JESSIE is an older fellow, but still full of energy. He’s a pug/beagle mix who loves to be where the action is happening. He loves people and would make a wonderful addition to the family.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

I

’ve been taking in a lot of great movies this summer. The blockbusters have not disappointed (at least not the ones I’ve seen). But what of the indie f licks? You know I like to balance this column with the Hollywood scene as well as the independent film. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is one of those films that comes along once in a great while to completely knock me over. As the title may suggest, it’s a tear jerker. But it also has a sense of humor and a power that grips you through its entirety. The movie has been winning awards at film festivals around the world, including both the audience award and grand jury prize at Sundance earlier this year. Thomas Mann plays Greg, an awkward teen suffering through his last year of high school. He’s determined to stay in the fringes of the whole scene—befriending no one, appealing in some way to everyone. He learns that Rachel, an acquaintance neighbor and co-student (played by Olivia Cooke), is diagnosed with cancer,

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl won several awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and everything changes. He befriends the girl, indeed even to allowing her into the relationship he’s had since kindergarten with Earl, played by RJ Cyler. Earl lets Rachel in on a secret, that the two boys make quirky films that mock the Hollywood and indie film establishment—the Turd Man (instead of “The Third Man”) and like that. Eventually, a fellow classmate, played by Katherine C. Hughes, convinces the two that they should do a film about Rachel to cheer her

up. That becomes easier said than done. Molly Shannon of SNL fame plays Rachel’s mom in this film, and Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman plays Greg’s father. The film is directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, whose most notable work was on the Oscar-award winning film Argo (2012) with Ben Aff leck. I’m hoping this film captures at least some Oscar buzz this upcoming award season. It certainly has that element of Hollywood (with the short films the boys make), and that sometimes brings in a nomination. So grab your Kleenex and be impressed by a moving story of teens trying to help one another in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Don’t forget two great film screenings we’ve got coming up. On August 3, we present All of Me (1984) at Cape May Stage. On August 9, we present the 1926 classic silent film The General with live organ music at East Lynne Theater Company. No reservations needed. Email us at capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

t’s July, the natural world is bursting at the supportable seams with this year’s crop of newly fledged young. Everywhere you turn there is a baby robin huddled under hedges chirping to be fed. Young robins may be identified by their short tails, spotted breasts and gaping mouths. Adults continue to feed and care for them for several weeks after they can leave the nest. After all, getting the kids to the finish line is what the whole Spring’s investment of time and energy was all about. The biological payback for courtship, territory establishment and defense is getting to move your genes into the future. It would be a shame to see that bid for genetic immortality go down the gullet of some carelessly roaming feline now, hence the need for extended parental care and guidance. Automobiles pose a tougher challenge. Mom and dad robin can’t do much to deter 2,000 pounds of metal moving fifty miles an hour, and the survival instincts of young birds are not calibrated to react to this threat. This is why this time of year roadsides are dotted

with limp, feathered forms. We humans can assist the robins’ effort by driving carefully and keeping pet cats indoors this time of year. When it comes to successfully propagating the species, Robins show an elevated genius, which is why they do so well in habitats modified by our species. Wood Thrush, a species closely related to robins, are not faring as well. This spotbreasted woodland species needs a healthy under story to survive. This means saplings and under story trees like dogwood plus a

natural leaf litter layer. This is not a habitat type typically found in suburbia. However when I was a fledgling, we had Wood Thrush nesting in the woodlot maintained by my parents. This, the absence of roaming cats and street signs warning of “Children at Play,” insured that the flute-like notes of Wood Thrush were part of my childhood audio environment. And while it has been estimated that Wood Thrush numbers are declining by 5% per year, in Cape May County there is still a fairly healthy population in the wet, lush woodlands. I know this because I was serenaded just yesterday off Rt. 47. The song reminds me of childhood, which is a wonderful stage in every life, human or otherwise, providing you survive it. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
