Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright This column was too late for last week’s deadline and was initially published on Exit Zero’s Facebook page

I

backed away from outright support of the petition to recall Cape May Mayor Ed Mahaney a couple months ago, despite the fact that this column has been Mahaney’s biggest critic since he became mayor seven years ago (wow, that’s a long time). Why? Because I was influenced by a campaign against the petition, which was backed by a group of business people and citizens for whom I have a great deal of respect and affection. A recall petition would be messy, expensive and horrible PR for Cape May, went the argument. Wait until the 2016 election and make your choice in the tried-and-trusted democratic way. And all of that is logical, and wise. Except, with every day that goes by, Mayor Mahaney is causing more damage to this city than any recall election ever could. And I’m not talking about public relations. I’m talking about the fabric of city government. I think that Mahaney is a poison eating away

at the heart of this city, and that it would be dangerous to wait any longer to reach for the antidote. I wrote a couple weeks ago that City Hall’s treatment of Rob Sheehan and Chuck Lear, two of the city’s longest-serving and respected police officers, was threatening to wreak havoc on Cape May Police Department. For some time now I’ve been hearing that Mahaney has been whispering in the ears of certain police officers in a bid to

destabilize the department, turn the officers against Sheehan, who was demoted from chief to captain in March this year, and instigate an atmosphere where officers are pitted against each other in a bid to be chief. That chief would only be appointed, though, if he agreed to go along with the Mahaney playbook. As Aristotle said, “Nature abhors a vacuum.” Likewise, a police department that looks like it doesn’t have a chief... well, that’s a very bad thing. And yet it’s exactly the kind of environment in which Mahaney, an advocate (and expert) of the Machiavellian method, thrives. I’m done hearing about what a smart man the mayor is, how highly he’s regarded by his peers at the League of Municipalities, how good he is at securing grants for this city, and how he works SO very hard for Cape May. All of the above is likely true. But at what cost? Under his rule (and it IS his rule, in direct contravention of the Faulkner Act, Continued on Page 14

which states that Cape May’s City Manager, Bruce MacLeod, should be running the town), America’s Original Seaside Resort has been submerged into a dark and sleazy Shakespearean farce, where the reputations of good men are being put to the sword. An awful public squabble between the city and the County Prosecutor’s Office — which led to the county appointing a monitor in the heart of Cape May Police Department because relations between the police and the city were untenable — is not going to end in a good place. I have been dismayed and frustrated by the city’s unwillingness to realize its mistake and reappoint Rob Sheehan as Chief of Police. Clearly, Mahaney has done enough to convince two other council members that there is indeed no smoke without fire, and that there’s something rotten (Shakespeare reference!) inside CMPD. But that’s not the case. The stench comes from the mayor’s office, and from the city manager’s office. The campaign to destroy Lieutenant Lear’s four-decadelong career in the CMPD by attempting to fire him over a comp time issue that the city has known about for around 10 years is disgraceful and disgusting — Mahaney, MacLeod and Tony Monzo, the city’s attorney — should be thrown out of City Hall for their campaign of sleaze that threatens to bring down Lear and Sheehan, who was unlucky enough to inherit the longstanding issue when he became chief. In the latest salvos of this war, the city recently lost its legal attempt to have the county monitor removed, then issued a press release claiming victory, and saying that the Policeman’s Benevolent Assocation (which represents rank-and-file officers) supported the city’s stance. Only for the PBA to issue a release condemning the city’s words, saying that the PBA’s position had been deliberately

The bad news mayor... Machiavellian Mahaney exploited. Given that there are now so many lawyers involved in this mess, it’s not easy to understand all the nuances (I say nuances, but lawyers, as we know, sometimes opt for deliberate obfuscation). But one thing IS certain, in my mind. For the good of Cape May, Ed Mahaney must be removed from City Hall as soon as possible. The only way to do that, barring the impossible notion of him falling on his sword and resigning (because he really does think he’s god’s gift to the city), is for a special election to recall him. And I won’t even get into the debacle of Convention Hall, where week after week, untold taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted on concerts that the city will not advertise (they are too stupidly proud and stubborn to ever advertise in Exit Zero, or any other publication that doesn’t toe the line). And never minds ads — they’ve barely sent out a press release. It’s madness. Yes, I worry that there would not be a suitable candidate able to saddle up in time to take Mahaney’s place, if the recall was successful. But I’ve been told that a former mayor would be willing to hold the fort until the next regular election, in November of next year. At that time, I would hope that a few smart, resourceful, positive, amiable candidates who don’t want to run the city like a twisted little train set, will come forward. We can only hope.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not much of a one for politicians, really, though I have had some fun times running crooked ones out of town on a rail. In fact, back in My Day, here in Cape May we didn’t really have any process for disciplining ejected officials other than the running-on-the-rail thing: in the end we were so busy we ran out of rails to run them out on, and instead had to fall back on the tried and tested method of firing them towards Wildwood from a catapult. When I see all this current kerfuff le about the mayor, I am dismayed at all the talk of motions and recalls and feuding: far simpler to have all parties concerned meet on the beach at midnight and last man, woman or beast standing is in charge until next time. We tried that in Cape May and it was interesting, to day the least. Our “mass brawl democracy” method of appointing mayors did lead to some rather awkward situations: there was that time a horseshoe crab won by a technical default, and no one understood a damn word he said

while in office. Looking back, it was something of a golden age for Cape May. And of course, Young Albert became “dictator” for a month that same way and ushered in a reign of terror as brutal and vindictive as it was short (he was deposed by a talking parrot who in turn was succeeded by that blowhard Ernie Hemingway). The core of the issue is that we here in Cape May are not meant to be told what to do. It’s part genetic, in that the people who wash up here tend to be eccentric and willful, and part due to the fact that we sit atop the US’s largest deposit of uranium

and the radiation does things to our minds. So while the notion of a mayor is well and good for lesser cities such as New York, it’s not right for us. What we need is for everyone to have a turn, for thier powers to be godlike, and for every incumbent to be in office for only a day or until removed and affixed to a rail (whichever comes first). It would keep us all busy during the quiet winter months and weed out those people not suited to thinking on their feet and, when the need arises, running fast on them. So, enough of this current elected nonsense: I have asked the current fella to step down and starting next week, those of you whose surnames begin with “A”, will be getting calls. Your appointment as Cape Mayor starts at midnight and runs through to 11.59pm. Remember, anything you say is law, though it’s up to you to actually tell people what you have decreed, and to try and have them act on it. Feel free to come in mayoral costume, or indeed any costume at all, or nekkid, if you so choose.

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, make summer memories around the fire in Cape May!

A

summer campfire is a primal experience, signaling safety and rest. Our ancestors gathered around fires to sing songs and tell stories, building family connections and promoting language skills for the children. You didn’t think the Girl Scouts invented all those singalongs, did you? Favorites like “Found a Peanut” and “The Princess Pat” always work, and you can try “Baby Shark” in honor of Twitter sensation Mary Lee. (Google them.) Simple songs with fun motions help to burn off the marshmallow sugar rush before you segue into quieter ballads. Tell ghost stories if the crowd is brave. Pick any old story and tweak the setting so that the details are local, like the lighthouse, the promenade or “this very house”. Keep it short, keep the gore down, and make it personal by pretending it happened to someone you know, like your college roommate, who took a shortcut he’d been warned against. The ghost wants something - Johnny wants his liver back, the Headless Horseman needs

a replacement, the mother searches for her lost child. If there are kids, maybe it’s a Casper-like ghost who just wants to hear his favorite story one more time. Of course, your friend escaped - just barely - but they say that ghost is still out there today. You can set up a campfire in your own backyard with a small firebowl or chiminea or with something as simple as a one-log campfire with a wick (about $15 at the hardware store.) Gather some clean sticks. Buy large marshmallows - miniatures make toasting tough. For s’mores, you also need

milk chocolate bars and plain graham crackers. Keep a bowl handy for extra marshmallows because kids will want to keep toasting long after anyone wants “some more.” Make sure you have permission of the landlord, and be safe. Keep the fire ten or more feet from any structure. Don’t set it on a deck or balcony. Have the hose attached and ready. Pay attention to the wind. Or, take advantage of the campfires in town. The Nature Center of Cape May (1600 Delaware Ave, (609) 898-8848) has a family campfire at 7:30 on July 29, along with a beach walk. $5 per person, children under 3 free. Willow Creek Winery has a fire pit every Friday from 5:30 to 9:30 with live music. Guaranteed seating is by reservation only - call 609-7708782. The firepit at the Rusty Nail has live music playing in the background. There’s usually a crowd, but there’s enough room on the sand for your kids to move around a little after dinner. Harpoon Henry’s has no fire pit, but kick back and watch the sun set the sky aflame. Next week: Summer Concerts

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am a food server at a very nice restaurant in town. I work there with a friend. In fact, I got her the job. My daughter bought me tickets to the Foo Fighters rock concert last week and I asked my friend to sub for me at the restaurant, which she said she would. On my way to the concert, the manager called and asked me who was working my shift. I told her my friend agreed to work. The manger called her, but my friend never showed and later told the manager I had mentioned it but never confirmed it. I have the texts to prove I’m right, but I don’t want to get my friend into trouble. What do you think, Answer Lady? - Double Crossed Dear Double Crossed The Answer Lady’s eyes are rolling

Wise answers to perplexing questions

back in her head. This woman is no friend of yours. She did indeed double cross you and you should not waste your energy with misplaced loyalty. You could have lost your job. To cleanse you of this woman’s toxic influence, the Answer Lady suggests a Thursday night of jazz at the Merion Inn and a couple glasses of wine in the mix. Start looking for real friends and rid yourself of faux friends. Dear Answer Lady Recently, I was told that my sister-inlaw was complaining about an incident

with my 18 month old daughter. She said my daughter is “out of control” because she bit her son, my nephew, who is three years older. That happened six months ago. As soon as we found out, we corrected her and told her not to bite, nor has she repeated that behavior, but my sister-in-law is still talking trash on me, my husband and my daughter. One point: my mother definitely shows favoritism to my daughter over her son when they are together. How should I handle this? – Angry Mommy Dear Mommy The Answer Lady suspects toddler rivalry is the motive behind this caterwauling. Parents often compare their children to other kids in the family or pre-school group, a competition which hurts the grown-ups as well as the kids. The only thing you can do is to press on and ignore it. There can be no drama without a full cast. Invite her and your nephew to the soda fountain at Dellas Five and Dime. Ice cream sundaes and a shopping spree in the toy section should go a long way to mend the angry feelings.

This lovely lady is LAYLA, and she is a fun, energetic playmate. (Rope toys are her personal favorite.) She can be a bit nervous when meeting new people, but once she gets to know someone they become fast friends. Layla gets along well with kids, cats, and other dogs.

«

ASTRO is a handsome young fellow who loves a good game of fetch. He walks nicely on a leash and his manners are progressing in leaps and bounds in the shelter’s CLASS training program. After a day of play, he will gladly curl up at your feet for some quality time.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

I

’m thinking that with more than $115mn in gross sales in just one weekend, there aren’t a whole lot of you that don’t know who the minions are. And at first glance of the picture on this page, you either said, “Look, the Minions. Cute.” Or you said, “Those things — I don’t get that at all” and you f lipped to the next page. You’re still reading? Oh… well… So you either you love these guys and think they’re cute but you just haven’t gotten to the theater yet. Or you saw it and you want to see if you saw what I saw. So here’s what I saw. Minions is a spin-off movie from the successful franchise Despicable Me, where evil scientist Gru (Steve Carell) plans a variety of dubious attacks as a committed villain with equally committed subjects… minions if you will. I liked the first Despicable Me (2010), but not enough to rush off to see the sequel. I always thought the best part of the film was the little guys who looked like Twinkies bumbling around,

The Minions... super-cute, funny little guys, but can they carry a whole movie? speaking sometimes barely understandable but very funny gibberish, and generally just being silly and indestructible. But the question is: can these Twinkies carry a whole movie. The answer: yes… but just by a hair — like the one hair on their bald, yellow heads. If there’s one thing the Minions movie taught me, it’s that animation is for children first. And this is the case with Minions. The audience I was in was filled with kids, and yes they were all cracking up

at the sometimes corny but always playful Minion antics. I was cracking up with them… sometimes. This film reminds you: kids films owe us adults nothing! Remember Inside Out (review a few weeks back) where I said adults got as much out of that film as the kids. Toy Story, same thing. Here, not so much. Set in England in the 1960s (before Gru) the minions are looking for a super villain to partner with. They find it in the evil Scarlett Overkill (played by Sandra Bullock). Don’t make me go into the plot, it’s really not that good. What are good are… well… the minions. They are quite funny — at least the kids thought so (and heck so did I). Go see this film if you need a few gratifying, shallow laughs. It delivers. And don’t forget to join us for two great films, All of Me with Steve Martin and Lilly Tomlin August 3 at Cape May Stage and The General with Buster Keaton on August 9 with live organ music August 9 at East Lynne Theater. Details at www.capemayfilm.org.

Bird Droppings

O

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ver most of North America, the Redtailed Hawk is the most common bird of prey. Here it is the Osprey, a large, golden-eyed, fish-catching specialist. It has the distinction of being the sole representative of it’s genus and, as befits a bird specialized to plunge beneath the surface of water to hunt, is equipped with an array of special refinements. These refinements include a reversible outer toe and an array of tiny spikes on the pads of both feet, specifically designed to capture slippery prey. Super weatherproofing allows water to run off the bird without penetrating to the skin. The wings of Osprey are bent at the wrist, an adaptation that helps the wings absorb the shock of impact as birds enter the water talons-first in its effort to secure prey, which is typically the most abundant fish species in a region. Here Osprey often target Menhaden (Bunker). Osprey were historically common, but the birds population declined dramatically during the 1950s and 60s because of DDT induced reproductive failure. The birds have made a

remarkable recovery, in part because of active management efforts, but also because of our ecologically rich coastal environment which supports a large number and variety of fish. (Fishermen out there, please do not leave discarded fishing line on the beach. Osprey are known to cart it to their nests, sometimes with fatal consequences, if young become ensnared.) A large, healthy Osprey population is our assurance that the environment is healthy and the fishing is good. In years when fish

populations are low or the water turbid, Osprey may only succeed in raising one young bird per season. For the last couple of years, two and three birds per nest has been the norm along Delaware Bay. Bald Eagles also benefit from healthy Osprey numbers. Our national bird is a kleptoparacite–a bird that specializes in robbing other birds of their prey. For this, Benjamin Franklin was lavish in his praise for Osprey but critical of Bald Eagles. Kind of makes you wonder why this handsome industrious bird was not made our national bird... It’s got my vote. For the next two months the skies over Cape May will ring with the cries of young Osprey asking mom and dad when dinner is going to be served. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
