Ramblings From The Editor

L

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ast week I mentioned that the debacle that passes for business as usual in Cape May’s City Hall was worthy of a Shakespearean farce. Now it’s turning into more of a pantomime farce. On the Cool Cape May Facebook page, there was a picture posted of a light on in the city clerk’s office, at just before midnight one day last week. A shadowy figure was seen in there. Who could it be? Well, a representative from Cape May Police Department entered the building and found Mayor Ed Mahaney inside the clerk’s office. Thing is, you’re not supposed to enter City Hall outside of normal hours without first going through the CMPD, who hold the keys. I think it’s pretty marvellous that this particular Facebook page has attracted a cadre of citizen reporters who appear to be following the mayor’s every move. Life must feel very uncomfortable for him right now. Which is how it should be in a democracy when the leaders are not behaving themselves. Or, should I say, people who take on the mantle of leaders without any legal right to do so. Quite what the mayor was up to in the

BIRD

IS THE WORD A CAPE MAY CARTOON

wee small hours inside City Hall isn’t clear, but I would have imagined he should find it possible to get all of his work done during normal business hours. Especially when his “work” is supposed to amount to things like running meetings and marrying people. There was also the matter of a public squabble going on between the city’s solicitor, Tony “Ka-Ching!” Monzo and a bulldog-type lawyer/campaigner called Harry Scheeler, who seems very keen on bringing Mahaney, Monzo and City Manager Bruce

MacLeod to their knees. But I’ll get into that another day since I’d like to add a couple positive notes to this column. First of all, congratulations to the Cape May County Zoo, which was named the fifth best in the country and the 13th best in the world, by TripAdvisor! Second of all, I would like to congratulate Cape May Brewing Company, which recently chalked up its 200th New Jersey account. That’s pretty fantastic. Kudos to Ryan Krill, Chris Henke and the rest of the brew crew. Thirdly, I would like to congratulate Brooke Dodds, the young entrepreneur who runs Empanada Mama’s in West Cape May. Brooke came to the Exit Zero Cookhouse (cheap plug!) for curry last Friday, and I noticed she was heavily pregnant. Nine months pregnant, in fact. I mentioned that spicy food was known to bring on babies. Brooke said she was aware of this and ordered a curry. Next morning she emailed me to say the baby had arrived at 2:37am! Congrats to Brooke, and all hail curry! Enjoy the week... speak to you next issue.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am often asked: “Where do you go on vacation?” I always say the same thing in return: “Living in Cape May IS a vacation!” I follow that up with some good advice, which depends of course to whom I am talking, but tends to be along the line of: “Get a haircut, and wear spats!”, or “Button that tunic, laddie!”, and sometimes: “You’re a mess! Leave town!” But truly, where DOES one go for a break from Cape May? I do take 14 days’ “antication” every year, just to give me an added appreciation for Cape May upon my return. Some years Young Albert and I board our decommissioned (and then later quietly re-commissioned) Fast Attack Boat “The Edge of Reason” and motor up the coast in search of pirates (I say “pirates”, when I actually mean “anyone we take a disliking to”) and run them ashore/send them to the bottom/draw alongside and shout hurtful things, depending on our mood. Once, we had a prefectly lovely time sitting just offshore of Wildwood, snorkeling, sunbathing and shelling. What’s that? No, no, whyever

would I want seashells? I mean shelling stray Wildwoodians with the rather nice 2” gun on the bow. I have also taken in all of the world’s capitals, expecting to be awed, but all were disappointing compared to home. The Forbidden City? Not a patch on the Admiral Hotel. Edinburgh Castle? An anthill compared to The Marquiss De Lafayette hotel. The New York Times building? have they even SEEN the Exit Zero offices? If so, they would not dare call themselves a newspaper. And every time, whether I have returned by motor car, aeroplane, hot air

balloon or in a crate (my expedition to Borneo did not go well), I have taken a deep breath of sea air and been glad to be home. Oh, this city is not perfect, not at all: I have a love-hate relationship with Shoebies, as you know (they adore me for my gentlemanly ways and formal dress, and I despise them all), I am not at peace with the notion that people should purchase homes here and then leave them empty for nine months of the year (I am thinking of restarting the much-loved-but-troubled “Wicker Man” festival whereby good fortune and a fine harvest were guaranted by the sacrifice of whichever maroon tooted his BMW horn at me when I was crossing the street). But for all of Cape May’s faults (I counted three: two are above, the third is a person reading this newspaper who knows who he/she is), I walk the boundaries every day, breathe in the scent of the sea, and realize that when one tires of Cape May, one tires of life. This is actually quite handy, because we take a dim view of people who are critical of Cape May, and kill them on the spot.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, see the spooks at the seashore!

ouldn’t you like to meet a ghost or two? Why wait for Halloween? Get your ghostly thrills in Cape May this summer. Cape May has been called the “most haunted city in America.” Experts credit the quartz in our Cape May diamonds. Ghostly children supposedly startle latenight workers on the Washington Street Mall. Walkers report encountering the good-natured ghost of Thomas Higbee and his dog on Higbee Beach. Earl Shields, a teenager who died in a hunting accident, is said to cause mischief at his family’s summer cottage, now the Peter Shields Inn. Lights go on and off, visitors to the ladies room are spooked, and shadows scare staff away from the linen closet. On Saturday, August 1, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities presents Ghost 101 at the Physick Estate at 7:45 p.m. Researchers from Ghost-One will search the 1879 home of Dr. Emlen Physick for spirits before discussing their findings over dessert at the Carriage House Cafe & Tearoom.

Tickets are $30, available online at capemaymac.org or at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street. Buy early, because the event is limited to 50 people. Those who would rather keep a little distance from the ghosts may prefer the Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour. Your tour guide will share the stories of medium Craig McManus, pointing out their locations as you pass. Stay alert! Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children. Call 609-8845404 for more information. Historic Cold Spring Village, a living his-

tory museum located three miles north of Cape May, offers acres of historical artifacts from the age of homespun, when America was new. You can always tour the site for hints about what life was like two centuries ago, but if you’d like a chance for more direct information, join paranormal investigators on August 11 and September 5 from 7:30 to 10:30. With the help of digital photography and sound recording equipment, researchers hope to make contact with spirits. Tickets are $40 and advanced registration is required. Call (609) 898-2300, extension 10, for more information. There are also 45-minute Ghost Tours in July and August, for those who prefer a smaller dose of the supernatural. Tours are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8. Tickets are $15, and advance registration is suggested. If you’re a true believer, don’t hijack the event with stories of your own encounters. If you’re a skeptic, don’t spoil the fun with eye rolls or sarcasm. Think carefully before bringing your kids. Next week: Movies on the Beach

The 49 Things You Should Do In Cool Cape May Get reading, and then get out there! Compiled by Natalie Craig

FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a great list of ideas to get you started. Morey’s Piers Morey’s Piers have been providing endless fun to families on the Wildwood boardwalk for decades. Dare to take on some epic roller coasters like the Sea Serpent, scare yourself silly with the Ghost Ship attraction, or check out the revival of the KONG ride 35 years later as you soar 60 feet in the air circling the legendary giant gorilla. From the Ferris wheel to delicious curly fries you won’t leave disappointed. Also for some cool activities on a hot summer day visit their water parks Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis. They were ranked number #2 out of the country’s top 40 water parks on Foursquare! moreyspiers.com. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town, then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State

Park. The CMLF offers special events and boat rides, including musical boat cruises like Rock the Boat and Tropical Tuesday cruises (reservations required). Check online for the next performance of the Summer Concert Series on the Cape May green. Free admission and parking too! You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales. The 24-acre Cape May Terminal has free mini-golf and waterfront dining at On The Rocks with live music every night. Go for a family outing or enjoy drinks on the ferry or the terminal waterfront for a romantic evening with your beloved. For more information, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive upcoming events like Hands-On History, Ghost Investigations, and Civil War, Time Travel and Seafarer’s (pirates!) Weekends you

can experience different time periods and have a great time. The many authentically restored homes amid idyllic shaded areas make it hard not to feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 8982300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see some whales. Tours take off at Utsch’s Marina on Rt 109 (previously on Wilson Drive). There are also Teen Cruises, Groove Cruises and wildlife tours, to get a closer look at the beautiful birds and marine life of Cape May. For directions or more information, call 1-888531-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. Cape May Whale Watcher offers a a Sunset Cruise, a Grand Lighthouse Cruise and weekend specials. Located at the Miss Chris Marina on Wilson Drive. Contact at 609-884-5445 www.cape-

Bay Springs Alpaca Farm Near the end of beautiful New England Road, Warren and Barbara Nuessle live what they call the “alpaca lifestyle” – quiet and simple. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays (you can also visit their section in West End Garage on weekdays) and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store, which carries many alpaca related items (forget wool; go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) Don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas.com for more information. Beachcombing at the Cove A naturalist from the Nature Center of Cape May helps you explore the ocean, beach and dunes of the Cove on Wednesdays from 8:30-9:30am. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children (3 & under free) and can be purchased in advance at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, or on the day of the tour at the Second Street Pavilion on the promenade in Cape May. Contact at 609-884-8848 or visit www.njaudobon.org. World War II Lookout Tower Museum Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last freestanding World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system known as Fort Miles. After the award-winning restoration, visitors can now climb to the sixth floor spotting gallery while reliving the homeland defense efforts during World War II. The ground floor of the tower is fully accessible. Entrance fee is $6 for adults and $4 for children (3-12). Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. Birding by Boat and Wetlands Wildlife Safari Join the crew aboard the Osprey, a 36-passenger environmentally friendly pontoon boat. Since 1993 Captain Bob has been sharing the wonders of our coast. Enjoy a fully narrated tour as you get up-close views of ospreys, migrant shorebirds, clapper rails, herons, gulls, and terns. Also cruise through tidal wetland preserves, learning about one of the most productive habitats on the planet. Trips sail daily from the Miss Chris Marina at 1212 Wilson Dr. from April to November. Call (609) 898-3500 or visit www.ospreycruise.com or www.birdingbyboat.org for more information and booking. Aviation Museum The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, a few minutes north of town, has a wonderful collection of planes and helicopters all set in a building. At its peak during WWII, it accommodated 222 planes and

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am 27 and looking for Mr. Right. I met a man at my older brother’s barbeque, who went to college with him. My brother warned me not to get involved with him – that he was a player, but that was back then and he told me he changed. We went out a few times, but last weekend a friend sent me a Facebook posting of him in Avalon partying with three other guys and four girls. He had his arm around one of them. You know Answer Lady, I had sand on the bathroom floor and my apartment was not very tidy. Do you think that’s why he’s brushed me off? - Not worthy? Dear Worthy Repeat after the Answer Lady: “I am worthy of love. I just need to learn how to rec-

Wise answers to perplexing questions

ognize it when it comes along.” You should have listened to your brother. This man has not changed and probably never will. Sand on the bathroom floor is not a deal breaker with most men. Stop obsessing about what is wrong with you and start looking at why you are attracted to the unworthy. Go to the Zoo Company and buy yourself a teddy bear. Hug it and visualize your ideal man. Meanwhile, dress in your sexiest frock and take a selfie with one of your hot, hot guy friends. Post it on Facebook. It’ll get back to him. Then he’ll

call and then you’ll dismiss him. Won’t you? Dear Answer Lady; I recently moved in with a friend, who has a parrot named Bella. The bird follows me wherever I go, hissing at me. I try to give her treats and she takes them but spits them back at me. When my roommate is out of town, she talks to me incessantly and dances to Stevie Wonder. Then, when my roommate comes back she starts hissing again. Truth be told, Bella creeps me out and I’m a little afraid of her, but I need to make friends with her. Any suggestions? – Ain’t askin’ for trouble Dear Ain’t Askin’ YOU need an attitude adjustment, not Bella. She senses your fear and acts on it. She clearly likes you or she wouldn’t be so nice when her Mommy is away. Think about what goes right when your roommate is gone and try to duplicate it when she is present. Bella is probably protecting her mom. The Answer Lady suggests you go to the Exit Zero Cookhouse and get meals to go. Put Bella in her cage and the three of you go on a picnic.

NANA was found as a stray. She is a sweet girl who is built like a brick house and loves to snuggle. Nana would do best as an only pet in a house with older kids, not because she doesn’t love the little ones, but because she is a very big girl.

«

Meet DOODLES, a playful guy with a beautiful brindle coat and lots of energy for having fun. This, along with his sweet, loving nature and his love of snuggling, would make him a great family dog. Doodles is a smart fellow - he’s house trained and knows how to “sit”.

PERRY came to the shelter after his owner of nine years surrendered him. They were going away to college and could not take Perry. He is a wonderfully affectionate boy who would make a great couch companion, if given the chance.

«

AVA came to the shelter with her sister, but she was adopted soon afterwards. Now Ava rooms with her best friend, Candy. Either of them would be happy to see the other go to a forever home, but they’d make a great pair if adopted together.

STAR has lived at the shelter with her sister, Garland, since they were tiny kittens. They are both beautiful ladies with lots of affection to give - they can be very snuggly.

The Book Column

This week’s Movie Column takes a look at Harper Lee’s new novel -- By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

G

o Set a Watchman is only the second book from Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird (published 1961). Ask me my favorite book--To Kill a Mockingbird. As me my favorite movie--same (1962). Gregory Peck won the Best Actor Oscar, and the film for Best Adaptation and Best Art Direction. Lee won the Pulitzer Prize for the book. These two are literature and film’s greatest offerings. This second book, released weeks ago, is (for want of a better term) a sequel for the original. I tried not to follow hype about it. Apparently it was written before To Kill a Mockingbird, and one can see that easily if you’ve ever written longer prose where you missed a whole great story when writing another. I can see a publisher saying to Lee, “This is okay, but I’d like to see all these people decades before during that trial you talk about—there’s your story.” The new novel opens a couple decades after To Kill a Mockingbird, in which Atticus defends an African American man accused

Father figures are doomed to lets us down in Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman of rape by a white woman. As the riveting trial unfolds, so does the summer life of Atticus’ son Jem (played by Phillip Alford) and daughter Jean Louise (nicknamed “Scout,” and played by Mary Badham). I love this book and movie for many reasons, but the main one is the character of Atticus Finch. Unassuming yet confident, quiet yet firm, he was a man’s man (not some Marlboro man or macho goof ball trying to pass for “real” men these days). In Go Set a Watchman, Scout, twenty

years older, visits her father in Maycomb, Alabama, from New York City, where she lives now. Her (and my) hero Atticus, is 72—and he’s changed. Against the backdrop of 1960s segregation, he promotes bigotry where before he stood against it. This ruins every notion I had about the character. Thankfully, Scout is our lead voice now, and she is as appalled as any well-intentioned reader regarding the change in Atticus, a man we all admire (or admired). There were way too many uses of what I consider an inexcusable racist curse word (and don’t tell me “that’s just the way they talked back then”—that’s not at all working for me). This book was more didactic than Lee’s first novel (and far superior work). Scout had to disengage from her father’s shadow by the end of Go Set a Watchman. We have to as well. The narrative was superb and it was a quick read, but I had to keep telling myself, “He’s only a character, he’s not real.” It’s so upsetting maybe because now I know better.

Bird Droppings

A

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

member of my Break into Birding class asked me “Can you identify birds by sound? I’ve wanted to know how to do that all my life.” “Yes.” I assured her. “So can you, but first you have to learn how to listen.” It’s not that we don’t hear the caroling of robins or the sharp “cheep” of Northern Cardinal or the burbles and churps of Purple Martins foraging overhead. Our ears pick up these sounds just fine, unless you listened to too much King Crimson with the volume cranked to max during your formative years. The problem isn’t detection, it is appreciation. Our brains simply filter these natural sounds out. Car horns we hear, crying toddlers we hear. The cries of Laughing Gulls are filtered out, so we move through a sound rich world in a state of self-inflicted deprivation. It started in the crib when you, a blob of sensory receptors, were lying on your tummy trying to make sense of all the stimulus you were being bombarded with: heat, cold, scratchy blanket, clang of pots in the kitchen, birds singing through the window. To pre-

vent sensory overload, the brain sets up a triage center and starts assigning significance to some stimuli but not others. Bird singing through window scored low, so your brain set up a filter, blocking the bird song stimulus from getting to the processing centers. Step one in learning bird sounds is to strip away your filter, reach out with your senses. Some bird vocalizations are complex, involving multiple notes. These are called songs and are generally pleasing to the ear and when heard several times relatively easy

to remember. Short or single note utterances are “calls”. They may be as simple as the “cheep” of a baby robin or more complex, like the belly-laugh grunt of Clapper Rail–a common marsh bird. One call I particularly love is the flight call of Bobolink. These grassland nesting blackbirds will be migrating over Cape May through August. Their namesake “bink”-like calls cascading from the heavens remind me of ceramic wind-chimes. It’s easily overlooked if you still have your sound filters on, but affirming, even stimulating, if you take a moment to listen for the true sound of autumn in Cape May. So break the shackles and touch the world of sound that is all around you. It’s part of your natural endowment. Enjoy it. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
