Customer Review “We usually visit Aleathea’s twice each time we go down to Cape May. I’m a big fan of their salmon dish and actually had it twice this last visit. They make a great margarita and the coffee is really good. I also love that they don’t over charge for the kids meal. I love the charm of the restaurant and grabbing a drink on the front porch for some people watching afterwards.” - TripAdvisor

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

t’s a hard life, being a dog. I say this as I watch Young Albert sleep in his favorite bed, atop the stuffed bison head in my study (obviously, it can be a much harder and indeed shorter life being a bison, in some cases, but in my defense, can I just say that I myself did not shoot the animal. That was my dear friend Ernie Hemingway, who was forced into doing so when the beast broke free from Wild Bill Hickock’s Traveling Show one year and rampaged along Beach Drive. Well, I say “rampaged”: in reality it wandered off while Bill’s attention was focused on trying to charm the late lamented Ma’ D’Catur, and Ernie instantly raised his huge and primed elephant gun (this is not a euphemism) and shot it clean through the heart). But a dog’s life is not always a happy one. Albert, like all apex predators (real and imagined: obviously a Yorkshire Terrier is not really a threat to a full-grown Siberian tiger, but if you have ever seen an enraged Yorkie confront a much larger animal with

reckless abandon, you will know what I mean), has to fight for his position atop the evolutionary heap on a daily basis, a course of action needing much in the way of growling, posturing, some biting and a LOT of urine to sprinkle around liberally. Sadly for Albert (and the lady dogs of the world), his other doggly duties and rights are no more, thanks to an early visit to the vet. We had no wish to rob the little fellow of his mojo, but really, visitors to the house were complaining about embarrassing stains on their pants legs, and more than one enraged neighbor had come to the

door with a basket of odd pups, claiming Albert’s paternity. How he managed with that Great Dane at number 34 is beyond imagining. But for a dog, there is always (even in the tiny brain of a Yorkie) the memory of once being a wolf. Can you imagine dreaming, as dogs do, of chasing wild boars through the forest, and standing atop your kill howling at the moon, then waking and realizing that in fact you are 12lbs of inbred, shakey malice, who may be a real threat to ankles and the comatose, but really not what might be called “majestic”? It would be like waking every morning to have dreamed you were A young Victor Mature, or Clark Gable, or that magnificent fellow “Drogo” in the Games of Thrones documentary show, and then waking to see Donald Trump’s ref lection in the mirror. It is a wonder more dogs do not suffer from depression and ennui at the sheer horror of how little and ornamental they are. A wolf, carried in a purse? We have made them a mockery, and they hate us for it

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week check out a movie on the beach!

he beach is a great place to watch a movie. Sure, the picture quality may be less than perfect, but the atmosphere makes up for it. You’re out in the fresh air, under the stars, watching with a crowd as the waves enhance the soundtrack. More importantly, you get the family out of the hotel room towards the end of your week, just when everyone needs a little extra space. And it’s free - you don’t even need a beach tag. What could be better? Cape May sets up the big screen on Thursday nights behind Convention Hall, near Stockton Avenue. There are games for the kids starting at around 7:30, and the movie starts around 8:30. Pick your spot and then take a stroll or toss a frisbee while you wait. Think about whether you want to bring beach chairs or a blanket. This is a bigger decision than you might think. Most people will have beach chairs, so if you’re on a blanket, you are at a slight disadvantage watching the movie. On the other hand, it’s easier to doze off on a blanket, and since you’ve probably seen the movie before (they show

some great classics), you won’t miss a crucial plot point. Also, when the movie is over, it’s easier to carry your sleepy child when you aren’t carrying a beach chair. (Those who say the spoiled kids should walk have forgotten the joy of carrying a sleepy toddler, or giving a piggy back ride to a bigger kid who will soon be asking you to drop him off at the corner so his friends don’t see you.) Ride your bike if you won’t be carrying anyone - as with all Cape May events, parking is a challenge. Stop at your favorite candy store on the way for snacks, or pack a picnic

dinner. Bring a sturdy lock and a light for the bike ride home. On August 6, see Will Ferrell in the holiday favorite Elf and take your family Christmas card picture before the show. Of course it’s early, but you’re all together, you’re freshly showered after a day at the beach, and photographs taken at twilight make everyone look better. You can even get away with wearing your sunglasses. On August 13, see Spaceballs, the Mel Brooks movie spoofing Star Wars. It’s silly, bawdy fun, and you may be surprised that your fifth grader does indeed understand those jokes. On August 20 see The Karate Kid. The 1984 version with Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita is part of the American cultural landscape and will teach your kids why you always say, “Wax on, wax off” while doing chores. On August 27, go Back to the Future in Marty McFly’s Delorean - still a fun ride. If it rains, movies will be shown inside Convention Hall, and the children’s games will be cancelled. Next week: Ride the Waves

The 49 Things You Should Do In Cool Cape May Get reading, and then get out there! Compiled by Natalie Craig

FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a great list of ideas to get you started. Morey’s Piers Morey’s Piers have been providing endless fun to families on the Wildwood boardwalk for decades. Dare to take on some epic roller coasters like the Sea Serpent, scare yourself silly with the Ghost Ship attraction, or check out the revival of the KONG ride 35 years later as you soar 60 feet in the air circling the legendary giant gorilla. From the Ferris wheel to delicious curly fries you won’t leave disappointed. Also for some cool activities on a hot summer day visit their water parks Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis. They were ranked number #2 out of the country’s top 40 water parks on Foursquare! moreyspiers.com. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town, then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State

Park. The CMLF offers special events and boat rides, including musical boat cruises like Rock the Boat and Tropical Tuesday cruises (reservations required). Check online for the next performance of the Summer Concert Series on the Cape May green. Free admission and parking too! You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales. The 24-acre Cape May Terminal has free mini-golf and waterfront dining at On The Rocks with live music every night. Go for a family outing or enjoy drinks on the ferry or the terminal waterfront for a romantic evening with your beloved. For more information, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive upcoming events like Hands-On History, Ghost Investigations, and Civil War, Time Travel and Seafarer’s (pirates!) Weekends you

can experience different time periods and have a great time. The many authentically restored homes amid idyllic shaded areas make it hard not to feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 8982300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see some whales. Tours take off at Utsch’s Marina on Rt 109 (previously on Wilson Drive). There are also Teen Cruises, Groove Cruises and wildlife tours, to get a closer look at the beautiful birds and marine life of Cape May. For directions or more information, call 1-888531-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. Cape May Whale Watcher offers a a Sunset Cruise, a Grand Lighthouse Cruise and weekend specials. Located at the Miss Chris Marina on Wilson Drive. Contact at 609-884-5445 www.cape-

The ground floor of the tower is fully accessible. Entrance fee is $6 for adults and $4 for children (3-12). Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. Birding by Boat and Wetlands Wildlife Safari Join the crew aboard the Osprey, a 36-passenger environmentally friendly pontoon boat. Since 1993 Captain Bob has been sharing the wonders of our coast. Enjoy a fully narrated tour as you get up-close views of ospreys, migrant shorebirds, clapper rails, herons, gulls, and terns. Also cruise through tidal wetland preserves, learning about one of the most productive habitats on the planet. Trips sail daily from the Miss Chris Marina at 1212 Wilson Dr. from April to November. Call (609) 898-3500 or visit www.ospreycruise.com or www.birdingbyboat.org for more information and booking. Aviation Museum The Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, a few minutes north of town, has a wonderful collection of planes and helicopters all set in a building. The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have a question on manners, or maybe protocol. I was invited to the wedding of someone I have known for a long time. Her mother and I worked together and later, the daughter worked at the same firm. It’s been six months and I still have not received a thank-you card. I gave cash and I want to know if it was received, and secondly, I want to be given the courtesy of acknowledgment. Am I wrong? – Thankless Dear Thankless You are not wrong. Your generosity should certainly be acknowledged, however, the rule is one year. The happy couple has one year to get those pesky notes airborne. In the meantime, soothe your anxious feelings by having a cocktail. The Answer Lady

Wise answers to perplexing questions

suggests Harpoon Henry’s. Sit back, watch the sunset and the people who clap for it, which, for some reason, always amuses the Answer Lady. If you do not get a thank-you note at year’s end, you can always pay a visit to the Whale’s Tale and buy a box of them to give to the happy couple as a first year anniversary present. Maybe they’ll get the hint. Dear Answer Lady I recently went on a blind date. I must say I was bit taken aback when he had no front teeth. He explained he was in a car accident a

year ago and, although he has a lot of money, he has not found the right dentist. I still thought he was nice, and decided that his missing teeth should not be a deal breaker. So after our coffee encounter, I agreed to meet him for dinner. He takes me to a restaurant owned by a close friend and introduces him to me. “This is Patty, Jack,” he says. “How do you do, Jack. By the way, my name is Beverly not Patty,” I said. So, dinner was a little tense. He keeps texting me. Should I give him another chance? I feel bad. – Misnomer Dear Misnomer Cut your losses and move on, girl. You need to go to Pink and buy yourself a nice dance frock. Look up Tom Cupp. Take some dancing instruction from him and go to the VFW in Cape May one Friday to practice your skills. You are likely to might meet some other ballroom dancers who like to cut a rug once in a while. The Answer Lady thinks you stand a much better chance of meeting someone simpatico if you share an interest rather than focusing on a look.

SCOUT is a fun-loving fellow who gets along well with cats and other dogs. He would make a great playmate or work-out buddy (he loves to go for runs). Visit him at the shelter to see if you would make a good fit for this sweetheart’s forever home.

«

Meet STORM, a well-mannered girl who loves to play ball. She is always excited to learn new manners and tricks in the shelter’s training program. Storm would be a great fit for someone looking for a dog who is active in body and mind.

COKE has the honor of being a “floor cat”, one of the shelter’s model residents who roams the floor and plays on the kitty condos. Coke is the last of his siblings to be left at the shelter, and he would love to go to a forever home sometime soon.

The Theater Column

S

This week Tom Sims takes you to the theater with a review of East Lynne Company’s “Huckleberry Finn”

ummertime is all about taking trips, making different stops along the way, running into people you don’t know, and spending good times with the ones you love. Such is the essence of Mark Twain’s classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In the new East Lynne Theater Company production, Huckleberry Finn, that very essence is wonderfully captured. The book has been adapted by James Rana, who brought The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Zorro!, and other classics for the ELTC stage. He leads us through a summary of the story without losing the emotion. With an impressive raft f loating across the stage, you find yourself gently gliding along the Mississippi with Huck and Jim. Evan Smilyk plays the part of Huck Finn, and he does so with authenticity and good old fashioned grit. Way to go for a young man who has been in local theater for many years since his first days of acting at the West Cape May Elementary School. (When I say local, I mean local.)

East Lynne Theater Co. presents Huckleberry Finn, adapted for the stage by James Rana The chemistry between Huck and Jim, played by Leon Morgan, is as real as any feeling conveyed in the novel. Morgan’s treatment of Jim is f lawless as he yearns for freedom and lives for adventure. When the two embrace for the last time at the end of the play, you feel it in your gut that these are two close friends parting. As for characters you meet along the way, there are none better than Duke (Samuel Douglas Clark) and King (Thomas Raniszewski). The two hucksters wind

their way through the audience like any snake oil salesmen would—with charm and quick wit. The plot takes a turn as the Duke and King attempt to bamboozle two nieces of a wealthy landowner (played brilliantly by Beckley Andrews and Marcia Sof ley) after their uncle’s passing. You often see adaptations that consider only the elements of the story, but with Rana’s skillful writing and masterful direction from Gayle Stahlhuth, the story and its spirit come to life. The cast works together beautifully as they take on varied roles with unsurpassed energy and grace. Story, character, action all work as harmoniously as the bends of the mighty Mississippi traveling to its delta. Summer is all about the journey, and ELTC’s Huckleberry Finn is certainly a trip worth taking! This Sunday, August 3, East Lynne Theater Company and the Cape May Film Society present the 1927 classic silent film, The General, screened with live organ music from award-winning performer Wayne Zimmerman.

Bird Droppings

S

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu tephen was a young man visiting Cape May from the Bay Area. He was familiar with my writing and hoped we might be able to do some birding together. Of course the answer was

“yes.” I admired his enthusiasm and initiative. I enjoy showcasing the special birds of Cape May to people who can appreciate them. Coming as Stephen did from the West Coast, the Laughing Gull was new for him but the bird he was most captivated by was American Oystercatcher. A large beach nesting shorebird that resembles a volleyball wearing a tuxedo and smoking a bright orange cigar. Where Stephen lives, Black Oystercatcher are common, American Oystercatcher, no. But what made the encounter particularly memorable was not the novelty, it was the proximity. Acclimated to beach traffic, the birds simply crouched in the sand allowing close approach and prolonged study. “Ever seen an oystercatcher’s eye through a spotting scope?’

It’s riveting, the red-rimmed golden iris with a dark spot that makes the pupil appear vertical like a goat, imparting to the bird a “crazed expression,” one underscored by Oystercatcher’s maniacal laugh. One hundred years ago American Oystercatchers were absent in NJ, their populations depressed by shooting and egg harvesting. But like Least Terns, Forster’s Terns and assorted herons and egrets, the conservation movement gave Oystercatchers and other coastal birds a new lease on life. Visitors

to Cape May today can easily see bird species those living in the Victorian age never dreamed of finding here. Kudos to those farsighted architects of the Conservation Movement, including the founding members of the New Jersey Audubon Society, who first met in 1897 and who have been extolling the virtues of Cape May ever since, even hosting their annual meeting here since 1946. Stephen was suitably impressed by the number and diversity of birds. His plans to study ornithology at Cornell will insure that this trip to Cape May will not be his last. And from there, well, a life whose focus is birds ferries you all over the globe. While visiting the Amazon Basin is a must, Cape May’s tourist infrastructure is superior and the birds just as fascinating. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
