Going north you will find the pet-friendly Highland House B&B, and just up the street is a bride’s paradise, Weddings by the Sea. Now if you want some of the best hoagies and catering, Westside Market is a must. Bridgetown Antiques is next door. At the tip of the town is TLC Wellness, offering alternative and holistic health. Did you know we have our very own garden center? That’s at Cape Island Home & Gardens. You’ll love Bella Vida Café, especially if you are a vegetarian or vegan. Two of our local artists invite you to shop — Flanegan Art & Framing, where you can meet Rich and Diane. Ready for a massage? You can do just that at the Well Center for Massage. The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e need an official Cape May mascot. Back in my day, we had mascots coming out of our wazoos (not literally: I just mean that we had a goodly number. Actually, now I think of it, it WAS literally in the case of Wally Herbert, the councilman who had the misfortune to be standing too close to Herb The Cape May Ferret when a celebratory firework startled the beast and it sought shelter in Wally’s generously cut pants and... well, let us draw a veil over that incident. Suffice of to say we had a great many Cape May mascots, but never again a ferret. Also, Wally retired from civic politics that very evening.) If I recall correctly, our first ever mascot was a wolf. Well, “mascot” is perhaps not the right word: in truth he was consuming townsfolk and livestock, and in the end was hunted down and his head was mounted on the front of Uncle Bill’s Oatcake Emporium (the pancakes came later). In time though we took a more enlightened attitude to the
whole “mascot” idea and started to have actual live beasts. Squirrels, mice, frogs, racoons, a skunk, boars, bears, the occasional eagle were all roped in (literally) to serve as mascot, and the post of Annual Mascot Keeper was much sought after by that segment of the population (invariably male and pubescent) who cared more for accolades and adoration than keeping all digits and organs. As you might imagine, people came from far and wide to see our city parades and to pet/lose fingers to our mascots, and the money rolled in. And, in time-honored Cape May tradition, we took
a good idea and invested our hearts and souls into it and made it a great idea, and then quickly overdid it to such an extent that it became a terrible idea overnight (not for nothing is our city motto “Never Leave Well Enough Alone”). In this case, the purchase of a Komodo Dragon was, in retrospect, a little extreme. Particularly since we decided to mix the opening of the crate with a parade featuring lots of live music, fire-eaters and Cape May’s prize-winning f lock of sheep. The first surprise was just how large adult Komodo Dragons can be. The second was, how hungry. Further surprises were, in no particular order, how fast, vicious and downright ungrateful they are. When the fuss died down, and the remains of the sheep and slow bystanders were cleared up, we had decided to call a halt to the whole mascot thing for a few years. But really, I think it is time to start again, so write in to “Mr Wright” at this newsaper with your animal suggestions, including a photo and personal details (of the mascot, not of yourself).

The Activity Column
T
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, let’s boogie (board)!
hanks to mononucleosis and at least one enlarged spleen, my kids had been under a doctor-imposed moratorium on boogie boarding. Now that the moratorium is over, we are back to our favorite Cape May activity. As my rivals for the title of “World’s Worst Mother” may be interested to learn (who are we kidding? I confused mono with laziness - I have no rivals!), the spleen, a “useful but not essential” organ, is involved with immunity. Located on the left side of the body, the spleen is normally tucked up under the rib cage, protected. When it’s enlarged, it peeks out and is vulnerable. Put an imaginary boogie board up in front of you and you’ll see that it hits your abdomen just where an enlarged spleen would be. In ancient times, the French and the Greeks associated the spleen with melancholy, the Hebrews linked it with laughter, and the English with anger. Unfortunately, neither a good cry, nor laugh, nor temper tantrum can shrink the spleen any faster, so for three months post mono, boogie boarding was a no-no.
If you’ve ever caught a good wave on a boogie board, you know the soaring feeling my kids have been missing. The rush of being carried out of the ocean and up onto the beach is pure fun. Carry the board out to where the waves are breaking, lie on the board, pick a wave, and just before it starts to break, start paddling toward the beach. With practice, you’ll catch the wave and let it carry you to shore. Go ahead and say, “Whee!” People will understand.
You may get one good ride for every ten tries, but that’s okay. Hang out on the board for a while, taking a good long float between waves, or flip over on your back like an otter with the board on top of you and just relax and enjoy having a few yards of ocean to yourself. Just be careful not to get so relaxed that you float out of your comfort zone. Try to stay away from swimmers, especially little kids. Use the strap to keep your board near you and keep it from hitting anyone. If you’re teaching someone, it’s easier to be in the water with them than it is to shout instructions from the beach. Rent a board at Steger’s on the beach, $4 per hour or $12 for the day. You can also buy a board if you’re planning ahead. Small children can probably get a whole season out of one of those $5 styrofoam boards. Bigger kids and adults will want something more substantial, which you can buy at a local store like Summer Sun on the Washington Street mall for about $50. Use a sharpie to put your name on it. Next week: Whale Watching

The 49 Things You Should Do In Cool Cape May Get reading, and then get out there! Compiled by Natalie Craig
FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a great list of ideas to get you started. Morey’s Piers Morey’s Piers have been providing endless fun to families on the Wildwood boardwalk for decades. Dare to take on some epic roller coasters like the Sea Serpent, scare yourself silly with the Ghost Ship attraction, or check out the revival of the KONG ride 35 years later as you soar 60 feet in the air circling the legendary giant gorilla. From the Ferris wheel to delicious curly fries you won’t leave disappointed. Also for some cool activities on a hot summer day visit their water parks Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis. They were ranked number #2 out of the country’s top 40 water parks on Foursquare! moreyspiers.com. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town, then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State
Park. The CMLF offers special events and boat rides, including musical boat cruises like Rock the Boat and Tropical Tuesday cruises (reservations required). Check online for the next performance of the Summer Concert Series on the Cape May green. Free admission and parking too! You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales. The 24-acre Cape May Terminal has free mini-golf and waterfront dining at On The Rocks with live music every night. Go for a family outing or enjoy drinks on the ferry or the terminal waterfront for a romantic evening with your beloved. For more information, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive upcoming events like Hands-On History, Ghost Investigations, and Civil War, Time Travel and Seafarer’s (pirates!) Weekends you
can experience different time periods and have a great time. The many authentically restored homes amid idyllic shaded areas make it hard not to feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 8982300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see some whales. Tours take off at Utsch’s Marina on Rt 109 (previously on Wilson Drive). There are also Teen Cruises, Groove Cruises and wildlife tours, to get a closer look at the beautiful birds and marine life of Cape May. For directions or more information, call 1-888531-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. Cape May Whale Watcher offers a a Sunset Cruise, a Grand Lighthouse Cruise and weekend specials. Located at the Miss Chris Marina on Wilson Drive. Contact at 609-884-5445 www.cape-

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I was engaged to be married. The date was set and we were just getting ready to pick the wedding invitations when I got a call from a woman who claimed to be his fiancé as well. She said my fiancé told her I was part of his past but I refused to “give him up.” Turns out, several of my friends had seen him out with her, but never thought to tell me. Since that call, she and I have both said sayonara to King Cad. My question: what do I do with the jewelry? He is insisting that all the jewelry, including my engagement ring, be returned to him and is threatening to use legal action if necessary. He was the one cheating, do I have to be further humiliated? Did he expect me to turn a blind eye? What say you, Answer Lady? - Double Crossed
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Double Crossed; In the state of New Jersey, you may keep a gift, but you must give back an engagement ring because it was given as a condition that you would be married. The Answer Lady suggests you lawyer up and have your attorney return the ring, with a signature acknowledging receipt of it. That should put his panties in a twist. The answer is, no, you do not have to stand idly by and be humiliated. Once the ring is returned, take the other jewelry you probably never liked
anyway to Maryanne’s on the Washington Street Mall or Artizan’s Alcove. See how much you can get for it. Take that money and buy yourself something to serve as a constant reminder of how lucky you were to escape that death trap of deceit. Dear Answer Lady; Until recently, I commuted by train to Philadelphia for my job. Now, I can do the same job at home via the internet and as of next week my daily trek will end. The problem is I met a very nice man who rides the same train. We chat every morning about every subject under the sun and it makes me sad that I will never see him again. What should I do about it? - Off the rails Dear Off the Rails; Carpe diem and all that! Tell him your train ride is over and invite him to Cape May for the afternoon and lunch at Tish’s as a goodbye gesture. After lunch, give him your cell number, email address, Facebook invitation and Instagram info and tell him in this day and age, no one need say goodbye unless that’s how he wants it to be.

On Saturday, members of the Jersey Cape Auto Club will show their antique vehicles, while hotrods and other classics will be presented by the Greater Wildwood Hotel & Motel Association on Sunday.
Funding has been received through a grant from the New Jersey Department of State, Division of Travel and Tourism.

The Movie Column
T
By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society
his week, it’s Ant-Man versus Mr. Holmes! Before you search for a movie where a pint-sized superhero fights the legendary detective, wait. All I’m saying here is that I’ve seen these two movies, and this is the review of both. Ant-Man is the story of an aging scientist, an ex-con, and a suit that shrinks a person to the size of an ant with the power of a superhero. Mr. Holmes is very (very) British film where Sherlock (Ian McKellen) is portrayed as a historic figure. If I would have wagered which movie was better, honestly it would have been Mr. Holmes. I’m not into the superhero movies like when I was a kid, and I’m very interested in Sherlock Holmes folklore. As it turns out, in the Ant-Man versus Mr. Holmes battle, the little guy wins! Ant-Man is the story of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), a scientist who created the suit that shrinks a person down to the size of an ant. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is the ex-con who needs to get his life back on
Ant-Man goes head-to-head with Mr. Holmes (in this review, at least) track. He wants to do this because he has a daughter who he rarely gets to see because of his run in with the law. I don’t know, maybe I’m just a sucker for movies about redemption and second chances. One scene in particular where our hero goes subatomic. That was surreal and worth the price of admission alone. Besides that, the story, characters, and special effects were excellent. The company that Hank Pym has created eventually develops its own suit and plans to sell that
to the evil forces of HYDRA. This movie is steeped in Marvel comic book legend. I was never so attached to that universe during its heyday when I was growing up, so I am not that jazzed up to see all these movies made. But when the writers can concentrate on a good storyline, it makes it all worthwhile. I really wanted to enjoy the film Mr. Holmes much more. Like many people I admire Ian McKellen. The storyline of Sherlock’s last case was not compelling enough. For that matter, the present day story of Sherlock’s friendship with his housekeeper (played by Laura Linney, who I also really like) and her son (played by Milo Parker) wasn’t engaging as well. The film was sluggish. Oh, what am I saying--there was a guy behind me actually snoring! And I nodded off a couple times myself. So in the end, Ant-Man wins. Disagree with me? Speak up! Send comments to capemayfilm@hotmail.com and we may print it here (less any expletives about yours truly of course).

Bird Droppings
D
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
on’t look now Cape May resident, but you have been infiltrated. The first southbound songbirds are skulking in your yard, gleaning insects and avoiding cats. Furtive, darting forms that dance on twigs and dart from cover to cover. These early arrivals include Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, pale blue slivers of a bird with narrow tails that they compulsively swish to the side. You may first be alerted to their presence by call, a wheezy hiss: “Speee.” Also here in numbers are Yellow Warblers. These bright yellow, hyperactive foliage gleaners might be mistaken for goldfinch except they really are totally yellow except for a slightly duller back. Goldfinch have black and white touches not found on Yellow Warbler. In a few weeks, Northern Waterthrush will be skulking on the ground in cool, shady (wet, damp or dry) places. The gnatcatcher is a local breeder. The Yellow Warbler, too, although many of the birds migrating through herald from northern willow thickets. Waterthrush breed in the spruce
forests of Canada (the planets greatest bird hatchery). Your yard for the next two months is critical habitat, the binding link between northern breeders and their tropical winter territories. You don’t have to feed them, these insect eaters will find all they need in the vegetation, so long as you don’t go crazy and start fogging your yard with insecticide. A well tended bird bath in a shady area is a welcome attraction to migrating birds, particularly when temperatures soar. Or you can buy a commercial
mister, a hose that shoots a fine mist of water onto leaves. It allows them to sponge bathe without getting sodden. After a day or two, these tiny migrants will continue their epic journey and you will have played a key role in their survival. While migrating birds infiltrate all of North America, they are super concentrated in Cape May because of our peninsular configuration. This makes what we do with our yards very important to the health and survival of birds whose lives orbit between distant poles but depend upon us during the most dangerous and challenging period in their lives. It is estimated that 90% of all birds hatched in one year fail to see the next. You can up their odds for survival by making your yard bird friendly, beginning with keeping cats indoors. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
