Ramblings From The Editor

A

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

wise person once said that you can never understand a person until you walk a mile in their shoes. So I guess it’s true to say that I don’t understand the people who run the City of Cape May. As City Manager Bruce MacLeod walked along the promenade on Monday, I can’t guess what was going on in his mind. All I know is that he asked his people in the city’s Public Works department to hit the promenade between Jackson and Decatur and remove any bikes that were locked to railings or signs. Which meant those locks being cut open. The Public Works people enlisted the help of Cape May Police Department, who supervised the bike cull. In total, according to Lieutenant Chuck Lear, of CMPD, 10 bikes were targeted. Eight of those were removed to the city’s substation in West Cape May. Two others were reportedly returned to owners at the scene. Those eight people were, I’m told, each given tickets by the CMPD and face fines of $100 — when the city goes to the bother of cutting people’s bike locks (destroying pri-

vate property), they have to follow up with actual legal action. I’m thinking that day in court (probably in mid-September) will make for some interesting viewing. One of the unlucky bike owners was Julie Comber Sheehy, who was still fuming when I spoke to her on Tuesday. “This is the most asinine thing I have ever seen. I grew up here and have always locked my bike on the promenade. If your parking meter expires, you get a ticket. Your car doesn’t get towed. “There was no announcement that this

was going to happen. No public address, nothing.” Julie says she got a ticket and will be fighting her case in court. So, why DID this happen? Well, there IS an ordinance banning the use of bikes on the promenade after 10am and that ordinance also disallows bikes being parked on the promenade. I had never heard of this bike parking ordinance being enforced before, so I asked Lieutenant Lear, the police department’s longest-serving officer, if this was an unusual occurrence. “It’s been a long time since I remember anything like this,” he said. Any idea how long? After consulting with colleagues, Lieutenant Lear said it had been at least 25 years. The CMPD were, of course, just following orders. Via local scuttlebutt, Cape May’s Mayor Ed Mahaney was the villain of the piece as news of the bike cull made its way around town. I called the mayor on Monday and told

RAMBLINGS FROM THE EDITOR From Page 13 him I’d heard he had been strolling the promenade that day and asked if he had been the one to make the decision. “No. I was walking the promenade with the City Engineer,” the mayor told me. “I had nothing to do with this. It’s a decision that was made by Bruce,” he said. Although City Hall watchers will doubt the veracity of this statement — it’s been generally accepted over the years that Bruce won’t buy toothpaste at Acme without calling the mayor and asking which brand — it sounds like the mayor was not involved in this decision. Bruce called me on Tuesday to explain his reasoning. He said he had been on the promenade with the mayor, the city engineer and the superintendent of public works discussing another matter — beach access points. During that walk, Bruce said, “I came across two bikes that were locked to park benches, at Decatur. That got my attention because there was a half-empty bike rack below that point on the promenade. I pointed this out to Joe Picard [Public Works superintendent] and we identified other bikes that were attached to the railings of the handicap ramp system — the handlebars were sticking out into that ramp. “Bolt cutters were used to clip the locks and the police department secured the bikes.” I asked Bruce if he thought that, with hindsight, he had overreacted. “Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it’s wrong that people attach their bikes to benches, preventing other people from using them. And it’s possible those bikes could have chipped the paint on the benches.” So is this random spot of enforcement an indicator of things to come? “I understand the racks can be overloaded at the height of the season, and I think I would look upon that differently. But,

as I said, what got my attention was the half-empty bike rack nearby,” said Bruce, who added there might be signage in future, warning riders against locking their bikes on the promenade. Bruce isn’t having the easiest time of it right now — he’s a central player in the debacle surrounding the decision to demote CMPD’s chief, Rob Sheehan, last March. He’s already reportedly been served a grand jury subpoena for his part in the affair. So, again, I haven’t walked a mile in his shoes. But, tell you what, if I was him I would be keeping a low profile right now. It wouldn’t be my instinct to come up with the idea, right at the end of summer, to have my men take bolt cutters to a dozen lil’ beach cruisers parked on the promenade while their owners enjoy the city’s beautiful beaches. (I heard that one of the bikes was owned by a lifeguard, but couldn’t verify that by press time.) First of all, we should be GLAD that Cape May has a bike problem. The more bikes that take to the streets of this town, the better. There is already way too much car traffic choking our beautiful streets. If the city wants to cut down on bikes being parked on the promenade, then here are some suggestions... Post clear, polite signage BEFORE the season starts. Take ads out in local papers to inform the public. Provide more bike racks. What’s next, Bruce? Stealing the candy from kids participating in the 2016 Baby Parade. Two folks have thrown their hat in the ring for the November election to fill the council vacancy left after the March resignation of Jerry Inderwies, Jr. Realtor Patricia Hendricks and retired engineer Roger Furlin are the first two names on the ballot. Are there any more to follow? Until next time...

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not a great fan of sand. This may come as a surprise to those of you who see me lying on the beach from dawn to dusk, sizzling gently under a coating of specially imported Ambre Solaire “Burnt Mahogany” Tanning Oil, but if you look closely, and can tear your eyes off my lithe muscular frame and my near-perfect skin, not to say the intriguing and surprising lines of my Speedo, you will notice that not one part of me is actually touching the sand. Indeed, I am carried to my carefully laid towel before the beach becomes busy, by a trio of mute eunuchs, and collected up gently but firmly by the same impassive trio as the day ends. It was not always thus: I was the one who made Cape May’s beach in the first place, a venture that took great skill, cunning, some bribes and the Army Engineer Corps, not to mention $300m in federal funding to remove the sand from Wildwood’s (then) world-famous Dune Mountains. But it was my time in The Sudan, fighting the FuzzieWuzzies, that put me off. Never have I

faced such a terrifying foe, not even when trying to clear The Ugly Mug at closing time on St Patrick’s Day, and from then on, I have been unable to feel sand under my toes without shivering uncontrollably. That is why we had our “Sand Tax” here in Cape May, once upon a time. Those older souls will remember it as a cunning way to combat beach removal and to swell city coffers: simply put, a beachgoer was fined 25c for each and every grain of sand he or she attempted to take with them at the end of the day, with no upper limit, or no-go zones for zealous inspectors. We had our

“sand wardens” checking people as they left, aided by a magnifying glass and rubber gloves: they were a remarkably keen lot, though I must admit a little unsettling to be around, and over time they abused their power and started to “Stop and Sift” all manner of people, including yours truly. I will not describe that day in detail: suffice of to say I am rather hairy and had no idea a chap’s Speedo could hold so many fine particles. Obviously, the whole scheme had to be stopped in its tracks, and that very night I set out with fire in my eye, a sharp-edged long-handled shovel, and a strange stiff gait, to deal with the problem. In that regard, I admit, sand is useful: we Cape Mayans have always used the beach for hiding valuable things, concealing embarrassing things and burying things that ask too many questions too loudly, or attempt to tell us what to do. Why elese do you think we have a beach tractor smooth it all out every night? Did you not wonder? Well if you did, make sure you wonder quietly....

No hassles. Just tassels.

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, let’s get creative!

eptember seems like a better time for the new year than January. Back to school season is all about fresh starts. No matter how many years have passed since you entered a classroom, you can catch the spirit of renewal simply by walking through an office supply store. There are clean notebooks full of wrinkle-free pages bound by spirals that have yet to be caught on a sweater, with covers still unmarred by the crossed-out initials of the boy you’re going to develop a crush on in November and dislike in December. Look at that full set of colored pencils without teeth marks. Admire that bright poster board without curling edges. Aren’t you just itching to draw a map of Magellan’s voyage, or create a pie chart of Albania’s chief exports? Unleash your creative energy in Cape May! Artists thrive in Cape May. Some set up near the marina, following a tradition of maritime art that began 14,000 years ago with depictions of reed boats on the Caspian Sea. Others continue the plein air tradi-

tion of the nineteenth century Romantics, whose search for authenticity led them to set up easels outdoors and carry sketchbooks with them, hoping spontaneity was the key to capturing Nature. Still others focus on the beauty of man-made structures, like the lighthouse or a Victorian home. You can see the finished work of talented painters, photographers and sculptors all over town. Stroll Cape May’s many galleries or stop by the Makers Making Shop for creative inspiration, and then get to work. Start with a blank canvas - that poster-

board will do - and draw the view out of your hotel room window. Don’t think too much. Just look, and capture the first thing you focus on. You won’t be graded on it. Stop at the Toy Shop or the Nature Center for a crafty kit. Visit the bookstore for a seashorethemed coloring book. Go to Swain’s for paints and turn a seashell or a piece of driftwood into a unique souvenir. Pick out some pretty yarn from the Fiber Arts Shop and start knitting a present. Local artist Anna Marie Zabielski hosts Watercolors with Wine at Seaside Cheese Company on September 2 from 6:00 to 8:30. For $45, you’ll get art supplies, some refreshments from Seaside Cheese, and your completed painting to take home. Bring your own wine. Email amz156@comcast.net for information. Reservations are required. Or visit Art Block, where they consider “Arts & Crafts as a very personal experience.” They offer classes, kids’ parties and lessons at 507 Washington Street, Suite #108. Call (609) 884-2000 for more information. Next week: Garage Sale Shopping

The 49 Things You Should Do In Cool Cape May Get reading, and then get out there! Compiled by Natalie Craig

FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a great list of ideas to get you started. Morey’s Piers Morey’s Piers have been providing endless fun to families on the Wildwood boardwalk for decades. Dare to take on some epic roller coasters like the Sea Serpent, scare yourself silly with the Ghost Ship attraction, or check out the revival of the KONG ride 35 years later as you soar 60 feet in the air circling the legendary giant gorilla. From the Ferris wheel to delicious curly fries you won’t leave disappointed. Also for some cool activities on a hot summer day visit their water parks Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis. They were ranked number #2 out of the country’s top 40 water parks on Foursquare! moreyspiers.com. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town, then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State

Park. The CMLF offers special events and boat rides, including musical boat cruises like Rock the Boat and Tropical Tuesday cruises (reservations required). Check online for the next performance of the Summer Concert Series on the Cape May green. Free admission and parking too! You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales. The 24-acre Cape May Terminal has free mini-golf and waterfront dining at On The Rocks with live music every night. Go for a family outing or enjoy drinks on the ferry or the terminal waterfront for a romantic evening with your beloved. For more information, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive upcoming events like Hands-On History, Ghost Investigations, and Civil War, Time Travel and Seafarer’s (pirates!) Weekends you

can experience different time periods and have a great time. The many authentically restored homes amid idyllic shaded areas make it hard not to feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 8982300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see some whales. Tours take off at Utsch’s Marina on Rt 109 (previously on Wilson Drive). There are also Teen Cruises, Groove Cruises and wildlife tours, to get a closer look at the beautiful birds and marine life of Cape May. For directions or more information, call 1-888531-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. Cape May Whale Watcher offers a a Sunset Cruise, a Grand Lighthouse Cruise and weekend specials. Located at the Miss Chris Marina on Wilson Drive. Contact at 609-884-5445 www.cape-

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I dated “Bob” for a year — he broke it off with me to start a new relationship with a wealthy woman with two children who lives in our condo building. We would run into each other all the time, including seeing him with her and her children poolside. So, I moved. That was two years ago. Last month, he started texting me out of the blue and the texts became more frequent and provocative this week. Naturally, I thought he was calling it quits with the other woman. Then, I see his engagement announcement in the paper. Should I tell his “fiancé” or let it go? – Deceived Again Dear Deceived Tough question. The Answer Lady is inclined to say, “let it go.” Since that kind of

Wise answers to perplexing questions

deception is bound to come to the surface soon enough, why should you bear the burden of that message? Moreover, I doubt the fiancé will believe you, even when presented with the texts as proof. What you might want to do is text him back congratulating him on his upcoming nuptials, reminding him that you will keep his texts as a constant reminder of the one that got away. Then, walk down to Harry’s and enjoy a cocktail on the top deck. You are the lucky one. Who would want to be married to that?

Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend dumped me this summer and I am trying to move on. I found an online dating site that I like and have had a couple of dates. Last weekend I met a man that I really liked. We met at Harpoon Henry’s, had a lovely dinner and watched the sunset together. As it was setting, he reached over and kissed me. I kissed him back and then burst out crying. I apologized and we went our separate ways. I have not heard from him since. Why did I do that? — Teary Eyed Dear Teary Eyed You cried because you, up to that moment, had not moved on — which sucks for the poor man who kissed you. You obviously liked him as well and perhaps your reaction was a release from the burdens of the past. As to the man with the magic kiss, don’t fret his loss too much, but you might want to reach out to him just to say thank you. Meanwhile, go to Cape Atlantic Book Company for a copy of the Toa of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff, which explains why Pooh never swims upstream and many other life-affirming lessons.

ZIGGY gets his name from his striking eyes (one blue, one brown). He was found as a stray earlier this year, but he seems to have belonged to a family because he has excellent leash manners and loves to play fetch. He would love to be part of a family again.

«

This lovely lady is LAYLA, and she is a fun, energetic playmate. (Rope toys are her personal favorite.) She can be a bit nervous when meeting new people, but once she gets to know someone they become fast friends. Layla gets along well with kids, cats, and other dogs.

The Movie Column

By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society

I

t’s a tradition more than a decade in the making. Every year, the brightest and most talented young people in the region and from points beyond come to Cape May Film Camp for a week of creating cool movies—and having fun in the meantime. This year you will find four films online that represent some of the best movies ever created by the camp. Here is a summary of what you’ll find at www.capemayfilm.org. A Tangled Mind: Rose is a bit… confused. She thinks she lives in a fairy tale complete with high towers and long hair. What is real and what is fantasy—both are weaved throughout. In the end our protagonist is left in a predicament that can be perceived as both practical and imagined. The cinematography in this short really pops with something innovative in every screen composition. There is lots to see, and lots to figure out, as you watch the story unfold. Rabbit Hole: The trip fantastic continues with a modern version of Tweedledum and Tweedledee. They are mysteriously inter-

The next generation of film actors, directors and cinematographers at Film Camp 2015 locked, and appear to be enrolled at an elementary school filled with adults who are a little… well… off. Only one can go back to Wonderland, but which one will it be? The “twins” are particularly noteworthy as actors who really do appear to be wandering through a world where they feel out of place. The adults really steal the show with a convincing portrayal of lunacy (I’m going to assume that was acting anyway). Neverland Begins: a prequel to the Peter Pan story, join us in Neverland as “the

captain” and young Peter are good friends. They are on the island with three mischievous “lost girls” who are not at all happy with such a harmonious relationship between the two guys. They devise a plan to drive a wedge between the two. The plan is simple, and it works. The alligator scene is surreal! In the end, the captain loses his hand and his head and becomes obsessed with his new enemy--the notorious boy who would never grow up! Panning Forward: staying with the Peter Pan theme, adults from all walks of life are being replaced by children! Lawyers, groundskeepers, even car salespeople— all replaced by children. Personal favorite, interviewer asks the new pint-sized car sales pros: “Are you guys even old enough to drive?” On the case is Detective Hook—sorry, he was recently promoted to “Captain.” He has made it his career goal to get to the bottom of this bizarre phenomenon. Check out these short films on our website: capemayfilm.org.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

f you go to the hawk watch at Cape May Point State Park and listen in to the conversation, you are going to hear frequent reference to the term “Cold Front.” So in case you don’t watch the Weather Channel, a “cold front” is the leading edge of a High Pressure system bulging out of Canada and pushing across the Northeast. Cold fronts bring colder temperatures, drier air, and hopefully northwest winds. Why hopefully? Because if the front tracks north of us, the winds go northeast; south of us and winds lose their northerly component and turn westerly. So what? Because it is northwest winds that ferry large numbers of birds to Cape May. Birders love cold fronts. Live and die by them. A Cold Front in Cape May between August and November is like Christmas, your Birthday, Graduation and the birth of your first born all rolled into one. It is, in short, a celebration. Cold fronts spawn migratory fallouts, i.e. great deluges of migratory birds. Cold Fronts also precipitate hawk flights.

Birds migrating south are moving through an ocean of air. When the winds turn northwest, the ocean becomes a river ferrying birds south and east where they pile up along the coast thus causing a concentration. Cape May being a land funnel, catches directs and further concentrates birds at the peninsula’s tip. So if you want to see lots of birds time your visit to coincide with the passage of a cold front. Is this a fool proof formula for success? No. Nature is never so precise. If the over-

night winds are northwest but strong, say 20-30 mph or stronger, many smaller biords may elect to sit the first night out and wait for less buffeting conditions. You are hoping the winds stay northwest for two nights. And if the winds are northwest during the day but the sky overcast, a large hawk flight won’t develop. Migrating raptors are dependent upon good thermal lift and widespread thermal production depends upon sunlight. Even the rumor of a pending cold front is enough to raise blood pressures on the hawk watch platform, and a fall in which fronts track perpetually north (a persistently bad weather pattern) will mean empty motel rooms in Cape May and disappointed local birders. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Space is limited. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
