Ramblings From The Editor

U

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

p until this summer, I quietly went along with the idea that September is the best month of the year in Cape May, without being all that gung-ho about it. Truth is, I thought July and August were pretty great, too, though I would nod my head wisely in agreement whenever restaurant owners and workers would talk about the pain of August compared with the serene beauty of September with a faraway look in their eyes. Why wish a whole month of your life away, I secretly thought to myself, whenever these people kvetched (and oh, how would they kvetch) about August. And then I opened a restaurant. Now, don’t get me wrong: 1. I don’t regret my decision to open Exit Zero Cookhouse; 2. I didn’t spend the whole of August dreaming of September. However, I DID spend the whole of August (and June and July for that matter) dreaming about every Sunday, the day that we closed the restaurant to give us all a rest. It’s the only time in recent memory

that I actually scheduled a whole day off each week. And, honestly, I wouldn’t have gotten through the summer without that day, which was invariably spent on the beach, reading, listening to music, eating, drinking, napping and chatting with friends and family. Beach days have been rarities for me in the 13 years since I arrived here, I’m ashamed to say, though I’m certain a lot of business owners can relate. So, Chris Hubert, I feel an affinity with you at last. For those who don’t know,

Chris is the uber-talented, uber-hardworking chef who owns The Black Duck and Godmother’s and spends his summers darting across Sunset and Broadway as he hustles between his two restaurants. Chris is not alone, of course, but given that the Exit Zero Global HQ is next door to The Black Duck, Chris has become, to me, the symbol of the hard-working business owner as he or she negotiates the feastand-famine nature of a seasonal business. I’ve had 10 years of experience in the retail business with our Exit Zero stores, but that just doesn’t compare to the business of running a restaurant. It’s so much more intimate, so much more intense and so much less predictable. AND... it’s so much more exhausting. But thanks to a cool, hard-working staff, anchored by our staff artist Mike DeMusz, who has done a wonderful job of running the kitchen, it’s been a very rewarding first year. But, guess what... I’m really glad it’s September.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

s the old saying goes, “sleep is for wimps.” I dictate this to my faithful manservant, Smithers, as I near the end of my 240-hour wakefulness marathon. “Why?” I hear you gasp, “would you do such a thing?” As well ask me why I hold the unofficial world free-diving record (52 minutes and seven seconds), and the notoriety of being the only man to have climbed the Eiger in a tux and patent leather shoes. Or the trophy for the most ever pancakes eaten at Uncle Bill’s in a single sitting (128). I do all of these things because I love the thrill of the wager. Admittedly, the “I bet you can’t stay awake for ten days” wager is not the most thrilling of my challenges (that honor goes to that time I boasted that I could f ly a P-52 fighter through the lobby of the Admiral Hotel and out the rear windows. That one was the stuff of legend, not just for my f lying skill, but because while the wager stipulated that I must emerge alive, I had carefully worded it to exclude the same of

the hotel (the million-dollar wager was with that blowhard CS Lewis, who was right in calculating that Mustang could not fit through the windows, but did not take into account the holes the plane’s cannons could make, albeit with disastrous structural consequences), and emerged not just the winner, but the CLEVER winner). Where was I? I admit that I have had 38 cups of coffee today already (it is 8am) and my thoughts are a mix of chaotic and sheer genius. I would sketch the plans for the working time machine I have just this hour devised, if only my hands would stop

shaking too much to hold a pen. Ah yes, the bet. I was relating to Kitchener a tale of my Young Days, when I had danced for 24 hours nonstop at Studio54, with that charming Rogue Andy Warhol. I was midway through the part where I rode in on a white horse, naked as the day I was born, when Kitcener interrupted. He did not of course doubt my equestrian skills, nor my willingness to appear nekkid in public, or that I would do both simultaneously. Instead he scoffed that in all the years of buttling for me, he had never seen me stay awake beyond 10pm. “You young ones didn’t invent Partying!” I roared, “or The Sex!”. At the latter part he covered his ears and sang “la-la-la-la!” over and over. What is at stake in the bet the followed? Well if Kitchener wins, he will clean up Young Abert’s poop for a month without complaint or feigned asthma attack. And if I win, I will have won, and all of you will bear witness. Nothing else matters.

No hassles. Just tassels.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, let’s go treasure hunting at a garage sale!

ape May’s quaint, quirky vibe is part of its charm. All over town, you’ll see things used in creative ways. Old boots become planters, spilling flowers onto a porch step. Outdated maps become wall art. A stack of old textbooks, wrapped in brown paper, becomes an end table. Often, when you ask where the idea came from, the answer is, “I saw it at a garage sale and knew I could do something with it.” Cape May garage sales are unusually eclectic. You may find surfboards next to glass doorknobs, and crab pots next to baby clothes. Maybe one homeowner has decided that her Victorian-era antiques don’t fit the way she lives at the beach, so she is selling a full dining set. Another decides the Kegerator was a better idea in theory than in practice, so it has to go. Seasonal renters discover that they have no room to bring home sand toys, boogie boards and kayaks. You’ll find youth beds and bikes that won’t contain the growing kids next year, games that have never been played, and jigsaw puz-

zles that saved a rainy afternoon. It’s like a treasure hunt. Shoppers should come bearing small bills for convenience and easier haggling. If you bring the kids, let them pick out a toy and pay for it themselves - it’s good practice, and it will give them something to focus on besides how quickly they can get to the beach. Watch them to make sure they don’t break anything or hurt themselves. Put a box in the back of the car to hold small, delicate items. Check for advertised sales on telephone poles, in local papers or internet sites like yardsale-

search.com, or by driving around. Just be sure it’s a garage sale - a gaggle of bikes or beach chairs at the curb may just be a family loading up for the beach Sellers should flout the conventional wisdom against garage sales on holiday weekends, because that’s when the shoppers are in town. Decide, before you start, whether you are looking to get rid of things or to make money, and price accordingly, but don’t get your hopes up. People expect to pay about 10-30% of an item’s retail value at a garage sale. If you have something truly valuable, you may do better with an online auction. Be prepared with lots of change, and lots of bags. Provide receipts for people who are coming back to pick up large items, and mark them SOLD. Put the dog away, and put the kids to work - a lemonade stand will distract them from the sale of their toys. Experienced sellers note that some people feel awkward taking free items, so you may get rid of more books or other small items by pricing them at a nickel or a dime, or one dollar a bag. Next week: Find your 5k

The 49 Things You Should Do In Cool Cape May Get reading, and then get out there! Compiled by Natalie Craig

FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a great list of ideas to get you started. Morey’s Piers Morey’s Piers have been providing endless fun to families on the Wildwood boardwalk for decades. Dare to take on some epic roller coasters like the Sea Serpent, scare yourself silly with the Ghost Ship attraction, or check out the revival of the KONG ride 35 years later as you soar 60 feet in the air circling the legendary giant gorilla. From the Ferris wheel to delicious curly fries you won’t leave disappointed. Also for some cool activities on a hot summer day visit their water parks Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis. They were ranked number #2 out of the country’s top 40 water parks on Foursquare! moreyspiers.com. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town, then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State

Park. The CMLF offers special events and boat rides, including musical boat cruises like Rock the Boat and Tropical Tuesday cruises (reservations required). Check online for the next performance of the Summer Concert Series on the Cape May green. Free admission and parking too! You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales. The 24-acre Cape May Terminal has free mini-golf and waterfront dining at On The Rocks with live music every night. Go for a family outing or enjoy drinks on the ferry or the terminal waterfront for a romantic evening with your beloved. For more information, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive upcoming events like Hands-On History, Ghost Investigations, and Civil War, Time Travel and Seafarer’s (pirates!) Weekends you

can experience different time periods and have a great time. The many authentically restored homes amid idyllic shaded areas make it hard not to feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 8982300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see some whales. Tours take off at Utsch’s Marina on Rt 109 (previously on Wilson Drive). There are also Teen Cruises, Groove Cruises and wildlife tours, to get a closer look at the beautiful birds and marine life of Cape May. For directions or more information, call 1-888531-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue at Convention Hall and the other at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street. The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter is in her 40s and still looking for Mr. Right. In my day, I had no problem finding my soul mate. My daughter and I have different approaches to men in general. I think she is way too aggressive with men and scares them off. She always gives them her phone number first, asks them to have drink, and she always initiates the first date. I believe men are hunters and women gatherers. I believe men like women to at least let them think they are making the first move. I know she reads your column and I want to know what you think. – Chartered Gatherer Dear Gatherer It’s not as simple as hunters vs. gatherers. There’s a difference between initiating and aggressing. There’s nothing wrong with

Wise answers to perplexing questions

a woman asserting her desire for a man by initiating a date. But aggressive behavior, no matter who the perpetrator may be, is scary. It broadcasts in fear of rejection and a deep need to be in the driver’s seat. Everyone fears rejection, but most people like to take things a little slower so they can sort it out. This is something your daughter must work out for herself and no amount of nagging on your part will make it better. The Answer Lady suggests instead you focus on the positive, reinforcing the fact that she is worthy

of love. A trip to Cape May Winery seems to be in order. A little wine, and a little cheese should shine a better light on things. Dear Answer Lady I recently started dating an old high school flame and we are incredibly happy. He takes me out to dinner all the time and buys me presents at the most unexpected times. We are both invited to a retirement dinner next month for one of our colleagues and my beau insists on paying for my ticket which, as an independent woman, I balked at simply because he is so generous on an everyday basis. He balked at not paying for the ticket. What would you do? – Stalemate Dear Stalemate It sounds like he gives you gifts and pays for dinner as a way of showing that he cares about you and wants to take care of you. Coordinate “love languages”. Assure him that other ways of showing affection are just as valid and effective. Take him out for a meal on the Schooner at the Lobster house, where you can broach the subject over a lovely sunset dinner with cocktails.

«

PIPER is an energetic pug/sharpei mix. She quivers with excitement as she is harnessed and prances proudly during her walk. She knows the basics of polite behavior such as sit, wait at doors, and attention. Piper would be a personable companion for people looking for a smaller dog.

«

PAISAN is an 8 year old pug/ shapei mix who lives up to his Italian name, meaning “friend.” His eyes light up when he sees his harness and leash and enjoys a quick run in the yard before his walk. He would be perfect for a home that is looking for a dog that curls up and settles on his mat when it is “quiet” time.

«

SKYE, a gorgeous blue pit mix, is calm and eager to please. She walks well on the leash and enjoys playing in the yard. She would be comfortable in a home that appreciates a more settled companion.

The Movie Column

By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society

I

n The Yes Men Are Revolting, two activists who play elaborate pranks on big business, government (in short “the establishment”) to get both messages about worthwhile causes and a few laughs. Mike and Andy, the Yes Men, are as fresh and funny as ever in this film. I had my doubts that I would like this film as much as The Yes Men Fix the World (2009), which we screened at the Cape May Film Festival. For one, this new film focused on one cause: the environment. Center stage is global warming, fossil fuels, etc. I got over that one-dimensional element because the shenanigans are still first-rate! This film also offers insights into the personal lives of Mike and Andy. At first this seemed superf luous, but it turned out that their lives were an interesting brief exploration from the main action. It’s been so long since Yes Men Fix the World (which is one of my favorite independent films of the last decade) so the men had a lot of ground to cover. And it was a

Mike and Andy don’t disappoint, providing firstrate shenanigans in The Yes Men Are Revolting bit of a walk down (recent) memory lane. Occupy Wall Street. Hurricane Sandy. The two were certainly in the thick of it with cameras rolling. But certainly worth the price of admission were two scenes toward the end. First, the team poses as Shell Oil to host a wellpublicized party celebrating more drilling for oil in the Arctic (now that it is much less frozen). When they pop open an oil spout that is supposed to pour champagne, the drink begins to spew all over (not unlike

an out of control oil pipeline!), and they have a hard time cleaning it up. They begin shoving little stuffed polar bears (meant to be decoration at the event) into the spout! Hilarious! But the ultimate is the end scene. They pose as staffers for General Colin Powell and the US Department of Energy to announce that fossil fuels will be outlawed in 20 years in favor of renewable energy sources. Conference organizers are thrilled that Powell wants to speak, but alas the General “cannot make it.” The Yes Men show up, Andy wearing a ridiculous wig. They make their announcement, adding that Native Americans will be given exclusive license to renewable energy contracts. In the end, they present Native American music, and attendees of the conference (all defense contractors) begin to dance in a circle with headbands on. Unbelievable. You can find The Yes Men Are Revolting wherever films are streamed! If you watch it, email me at capemayfilm@hotmail.com to let me know.

Bird Droppings

N

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ow fall bird migration starts for real. All those shorebirds heading south in June and July? That was just warming up. From here on in, late August to late November, Cape May becomes ground zero for southbound birds, making it the most celebrated fall migration hotspot on the planet. For the next three months, tens of millions of birds, in excess of three hundred species will enter Cape May airspace and festoon themselves across the peninsula for a day or a week. This is why all habitat becomes critical habitat in autumn. Once they arrive, birds are dependent upon the food resources they find here. Fate has made this tiny geographic spur the critical link between the boreal forests of Canada and the rain forests of Central and South America for millions of weary migrants, most of whom are making the perilous journey for the first time. Thousands of birders from all over the world travel here specifically to witness this spectacle–a daily deluge of birds called a migratory “fallout.” It happens when north-

west winds coming on the heels of a cold front stimulate a mass movement of birds that migrate mostly by night. They look down about dawn and see lots of water and a narrow strip of land. Being for the most part “land birds,” their options are limited. It’s land on the land or perish. Millions of birds do perish during migration but this long distance strategy has worked long enough and well enough to integrate itself into the DNA of survivors. You can increase their odds of survival by driv-

ing more slowly on mornings when small birds are zipping across roads, and keeping cats indoors. Weary, young birds raised in the boreal forest know nothing about the predatory prowess of domestic cats. Plate glass windows are likewise not part of their defensive DNA. It has been estimated that a billion birds are killed every year in the U.S. by striking windows. You can help by leaving external mosquito screen up. If you find that a certain window is particularly lethal to birds, try soaping it up by drawing a grid pattern. Ecologically-minded people all over the world are asking themselves “but what can I do?” Here in Cape May we have the opportunity to do a great deal. We can, by taking prudent, precautionary steps, have an impact that stretches from here to the Amazon Basin. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
