Ramblings From The Readers

Chad deSatnick discusses the urgent need for Cape May to make its beaches safer Last week, Chad deSatnick spoke at the city council meeting about the need for safer beaches in Cape May, following a recent spinal cord injury suffered by 17-year-old Archer Senft. Here, Chad follows up with an urgent call to action...

T

he time is NOW for all of you to step up to the plate and demand the DEP allow or suggest a resolution to allow Cape May to make a safer beach. The mayor says that Avalon may be in violation of the beach maintenance program with the DEP, but the question is what are the implications? Was there a fine? If there was, in my opinion, a fine would be significantly less than any medical bills that result from a spinal cord injury. Archer Senft was scheduled to be on a medic-flight from Atlantic City to Atlanta, GA yesterday. The flight alone costs $500,000 and insurance will most likely not cover this expense. He is heading to Shepherd Center, a spinal cord specific rehab center. Imagine that you can’t breathe on your own, can’t move anything in your body below your neck, and lack the ability to do anything besides lay

in a hospital bed. Pretty sad to say the least, especially for a responsible individual who wasn’t doing anything reckless — he was simply trying to cool off after a work shift. Now that you have been made aware, AGAIN, of the dangerous situation, do NOT let another injury happen in the City of Cape May. It is obvious that the mayor does not put a priority on families and their safety at the beaches! As I look back on the council meeting public portion on Tuesday, I reflect on a few issues... Mayor Mahaney: I didn’t get a chance during my five minutes to ask which beach you go to. How often do you enter the water? Do you feel safe when entering and exiting the ocean? When will the feasibility study be released regarding the plans to create a safer beach? In response to preventing injuries in the future, you said that when they are injured, they receive good first aid. Isn’t the real issue here to prevent these injuries? Your comments tell me that the beach patrol and fire department have become experts in handling spinal cord injury. Would the real

response be to prevent them? Council member Pessagno: You said, “The beaches are not the same as when I was a child, I totally agree with you Chad.” Does this mean that you agree that the beaches aren’t safe to swim? Do you feel comfortable allowing your children or grandchildren in the water? Council member Wichterman: You stated because of physical disability, you won’t swim at Kiwanis beach. If the beaches were safer, would you enter the water? Don’t you think there are more physically challenged individuals, young and old, who would benefit from a safer beach? Council member Meier: Thank you for the suggestion to have a report from the city engineer and/or public works. To have experts at a round table discussion is invaluable. The summer season has come to an end. Now is the time for you to take the situation seriously — don’t let another injury like Archer’s happen. You can NOT let another 15 years go by and depend on safety brochures and signage on beach entrances. It is time for action over words.

Autumn, interchangeably known as fall in North America, is one of the four temperate seasons — one of the most beautiful seasons in WEST CAPE MAY. Now that we have eaten almost every last Jersey tomato, we must concentrate on the grand lima bean. We will celebrate this great legume on October 10 at Wilbraham Park. One does not have to wait for the festival to avail oneself of the park and other fine attributes of this seaside community. This week you will find 3 more Business Association members featured in photos below. The Wilbraham Mansion has been in the capable hands of the Carnes family just shy of one-quarter century. You will also find Flanegan Art & Framing that offers custom framing and matting with an artistic flare. The Antique Doorknob is a must-see, specializing in original restored building artifacts, Victorian lighting, building hardware, stain glass, iron and wicker, as well as fireplace mantels. Visit www.westcapemaytoday.com to see what all 43 thriving member businesses have to offer. Don’t forget — FREE PARKING on every West Cape May street.

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

here did Summer go? I feel like it was only yesterday that we were welcoming the Shoebie swarms with open cash registers, simultaneously complaining about the disruption to our dear city, whilst suckling at the teat of the tourist sow. I have some statistics for you, gathered scientifically by myself and Young Albert on our daily stroll (Albert, like all Yorkshire Terriers, has a mind like a steel trap and the mental computing power of a an iPhone - oh come now, were you expecting something larger, like Stephen Hawking? He’s a dog, with a brain the size of a nectarine, so get a grip.). And we have calculated that over the Summer, visitors to our dear town have consumed 120 tons of saltwater taffy, a stack of pancakes 39 stories tall, 10,045 hot dogs, 3,000 gallons of beer and 198 assorted pigs and cows. They have purchased 2056 XXL tee-shirts with amusing slogans, 34,200.5 pairs of poorly constructed f lip-f lops (the 0.5 is down to One-armed Wally - who is also,

the sharper among you will have guessed, also one-legged, but who f lies into a rage if that is pointed out - purchasing a single f lip-f lop. “I will have a f lip,” he tells a bemused and terrified shopping assistant every Summer, “and don’t offend me by giving me the f lop, or there will be hell to pay!”), and an Olympic swimming pool of D’Catur Tanning Oil (it’s Cape May’s bestselling tanning aid, made from a secret blend of natural oils, PCBs and ground-up Cape May Diamonds). At the same time, we have issued 2,089 traffic tickets, made 45 arrests

for offenses ranging from Drunkenness to Being Annoying (we have a range of rather unique laws in this city), and one instance of Riding A Horse Improperly While Naked. Our beach tractor has collected 135 tons of trash, three sleeping Wildwooders, a VW Minivan and $45,909 in pennies. Exactly 30,034 postcards were mailed from Cape May, of which 93 per cent left the city: we retain or censor those we deem to be defamatory, or that ref lect our eccentricities in a poor light. We do the opposite to that tiny percentage of visitors who are really Just Not Right (another specific crime on the books), ensuring they are gently but firmly escorted to the city limits before dawn, after our policemen give them a lesson in manners that they will not quickly forget. And I mean that literally: all Cape May officers are taught to give a 40-minute inspirational talk about Comportment and Social Niceties, and use amusing glove puppets to illustrate it better. I have sat through it thrice and love it.

No hassles. Just tassels.

The Activity Column

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, let’s run for it!

he active summer season has kept you busy kayaking and swimming, kite flying and fishing, croqueting and horseshoeing. Scarce parking made you bike everywhere, yet your autumn wardrobe is a little snug. What happened? Maybe there was some lemonade. Maybe the occasional water ice or a Peace Pie became a daily thing. You discovered Quincy’s Lobster Rolls. You figured out that our uncles liked horseshoes at every family party because you don’t have to put your beer down to play. The Boiler Room went and added those brick oven pizzas. The Little Store opened, and it’s right there, on the way into town, with chocolate croissants. Well, summer’s almost over, and it’s time to get back on track. Running (or jogging or walking) is an uncomplicated, low cost way to get back in shape. Step one is to sign yourself up for a 5K. There are local, low-key events that raise money for charity, and most welcome beginners. Just filling out the paperwork will make you feel a little like an athlete,

and those psychological tricks are key to sticking with an exercise program. Mark that run on your calendar. According to the Mayo Clinic, most couch potato bodies can train to complete a 5 kilometer, or 3.1 mile, course in seven to ten weeks. Step two, get your doctor’s okay. Step three, find a training program that works for you. You can find the Mayo Clinic program for beginners online, for free. Step four, learn those motivational running phrases, like, “No matter how slow you go, you’re lapping everyone on the couch;” and, “A mile is a mile, no matter

J E W E L R Y What moment do you want to remember? Select a date of significance, such as a birthday, anniversary, engagement, wedding, etc., and Moonglow calculates the phase of the moon on that day. Your personalized pendant is selected with a framed image of that moon phase! The moon absorbs light during the day and glows in darkness, a gentle reminder of the things that mean the most to you.

how slow you go.” Step five, six and beyond is to keep stepping. If you’re already up and running, try “Run the Vineyards” at Cape May Winery, September 20, part of a series of vineyard runs. You finish with a glass of wine and live music. Visit GoodDayforaRun.com for registration and information. On September 26, the Beachcomber Krazy Color 5K is suitable for beginners, inviting you to “run, walk, skip and dance” your way through the Beachcomber Campground, 462 Seashore Road, to raise funds for Wildwood Catholic High School and Cape Regional Medical Center. Visit beachcombercamp.com for information. Another beginner-friendly charity run is Sole Sisters - the “Nuns on the Run” on October 3 at Saint Mary ByThe-Sea, 101 Lehigh Avenue, Cape May Point. This event combines a 5K with a one mile fun run and walk. The city of Cape May may host a Glow Run in late October, and November will bring the Turkey Trot to town. Take it one step at a time. Next week: The Dragon Boat Festival

The 49 Things You Should Do In Cool Cape May Get reading, and then get out there! Compiled by Natalie Craig

FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a great list of ideas to get you started. Morey’s Piers Morey’s Piers have been providing endless fun to families on the Wildwood boardwalk for decades. Dare to take on some epic roller coasters like the Sea Serpent, scare yourself silly with the Ghost Ship attraction, or check out the revival of the KONG ride 35 years later as you soar 60 feet in the air circling the legendary giant gorilla. From the Ferris wheel to delicious curly fries you won’t leave disappointed. Also for some cool activities on a hot summer day visit their water parks Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis. They were ranked number #2 out of the country’s top 40 water parks on Foursquare! moreyspiers.com. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town, then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State

Park. The CMLF offers special events and boat rides, including musical boat cruises like Rock the Boat and Tropical Tuesday cruises (reservations required). Check online for the next performance of the Summer Concert Series on the Cape May green. Free admission and parking too! You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales. The 24-acre Cape May Terminal has free mini-golf and waterfront dining at On The Rocks with live music every night. Go for a family outing or enjoy drinks on the ferry or the terminal waterfront for a romantic evening with your beloved. For more information, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive upcoming events like Hands-On History, Ghost Investigations, and Civil War, Time Travel and Seafarer’s (pirates!) Weekends you

can experience different time periods and have a great time. The many authentically restored homes amid idyllic shaded areas make it hard not to feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 8982300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see some whales. Tours take off at Utsch’s Marina on Rt 109 (previously on Wilson Drive). There are also Teen Cruises, Groove Cruises and wildlife tours, to get a closer look at the beautiful birds and marine life of Cape May. For directions or more information, call 1-888531-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. Cape May Whale Watcher offers a a Sunset Cruise, a Grand Lighthouse Cruise and weekend specials. Located at the Miss Chris Marina on Wilson Drive. Contact at 609-884-5445 www.cape-

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Every year at the end of the summer my employer has a golf outing at Cape May National Golf Club. It’s a scramble and my foursome usually comes in last. Then I have to put up with the razing for a week afterwards. I have a pretty good team put together this year with the chance of getting a scratch golfer but that would mean telling my best friend to stay home. I hate to hurt his feelings but I‘d love to be a contender. What should I do? – Last Place Dear Last Place Is it really worth hurting your friend’s feelings? And since it is a scramble (for the uninitiated, a scramble means each team member takes a shot and you choose the best shot on each hole) you have three other

Wise answers to perplexing questions

golfers who will make up for your friend’s bad shots. The point isn’t to win, it’s to relax. Enjoy the day. And if the razing is really bothering you, politely tell the guys that you’re just there to have fun. Brush it off. That should take the wind out of their sails. Dear Answer Lady I am happy to say my daughter is blessed with two wonderful grandmothers. Both My husband’s mother and my mother babysit whenever we need them and often take our daughter, let’s call her Gigi, on Aqua Trails

kayaking trips and to the Cape May County Zoo. But Gigi is only seven years old and my mother-in-law often likes to give into her every whim. Last week when a white Persian cat showed up at her door and Gigi said she wanted the cat. Turns out, the Pretty Persian had a home. So, my mother-in-law offers the owner $50 for the cat and sends Gigi home with it, without ever asking our permission. We already have two cats and the Persian is not integrating. In fact, she’s hiding out in the bedroom closet. Is there any solution? – Catnapped Dear Catnapped The Answer Lady suggests an altered arrangement. Request that since Grandma was the one to acquire the cat, and since she is not getting along with the cats you already have, that this persian live with Grandma instead of with you. Talk to your daughter before making the move, and be sure she knows she can still play with the cat, but it will live at her grandma’s house. Your cat problem is solved, and Gigi has another reason to love going over to Grandma’s house.

NANA was found as a stray. She is a sweet girl who is built like a brick house and loves to snuggle. Nana would do best as an only pet in a house with older kids, not because she doesn’t love the little ones, but because she is a very big girl.

«

Meet STORM, a well-mannered girl who loves to play ball. She is always excited to learn new manners and tricks in the shelter’s training program. Storm would be a great fit for someone looking for a dog who is active in body and mind.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

HAPPY lives up to his name (despite appearances in this picture). He is a sweet, lovable boy looking for someone to love. He lives at the shelter with his best friend, Mozart. Sadly, their owner had to give us up because they were moving and couldn’t take the cats.

«

MOZART might only have one working eye, but he has enough love for two whole cats! He and his friend, Happy, miss their former owner, but are ready to find a new home with a new family to love.

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD

«

STAR and GARLAND are sisters who have lived at the shelter since they were tiny kittens. They are both beautiful ladies with lots of affection to give - they can be very snuggly.

The Movie Column

M

By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society

ountain climbing. I just don’t get it. Sort of like boxing. I don’t understand why two guys would get into a small space and punch the living daylights out of one another for entertainment. I also don’t understand what compels a person to climb thousands of feet in the air when you could just send a drone up to get beautiful pictures. You see a mountain, you want to climb a mountain. I guess I vaguely understand the concept. Like when you see the waves you want to surf. But there’s just something about spending your time in a place where snow can slide at you in an avalanche of terror at any moment. Or where one misplaced spike can tumble you off a cliff to your untimely death. But okay, let’s say you’re a thrill seeker like the guys featured in the documentary Meru, which has limited release in theaters. This is the film for you. Getting rave reviews, it tells of the very risky sport of extreme mountain climbing. The Shark’s

Meru, a documentary about mountain climbing, is thrilling critics and audiences alike Fin on Mount Meru sits 21,000 feet above the Ganges River in Northern India, and apparently it is Nirvana for ultimate climbers. In October 2008, renowned climbers Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk set out to conquer Meru. They planned for 7 days to reach the summit, they spent 20 days in sub-zero temps to arrive 100 meters away. The story continues as they overcome life obstacles to make a second attempt. The aerial views are lovely (but again, a

drone could get me there). The story line didn’t stray too far from engaging. If you’re a thrill seeker like these guys, you in for a great treat. If your idea of mountain climbing is walking up a really, really tall hill in the park—more importantly if death-defying pursuits look more like insane stunts—this film may not have the same impact for you. You know who you are, so watch at your own risk. Hey, one of my favorite films is coming to Cape May Stage on Monday, September 21, and you’ll love it (that is, if you’re okay with the subject matter). Hysteria stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy. What is the film about? Well, it’s a romantic comedy about a Victorian invention that truly sought to “satisfy” women! Okay, it’s about how the vibrator was invented! It is such a fun film and does not get too… well… racy! But if mere mention of the word… oh you know the word I just used… gets you f lustered, then sit this one out. If not, I urge you to see it. It’s a real turn on (oh no he didn’t just say that!).

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

hose readers who celebrate the Christmas holiday tradition must recall the anticipation and excitement of finding presents piled under the tree. Sadly, Christmas comes but once a year. But what if you could experience the excitement of Christmas morning dozens of times a fall? If you become a birder you can! The difference is that the presents are deposited not by Father Christmas, but by passing cold fronts while you sleep, each meteorological Arctic Express ferrying brightly colored birds to your door. They’re deposited, for the most part, in the trees, not beneath them, but their wrapping is just as colorful and there seems no end to them. You don’t have to sign up, change your religion or even know what you are looking at. If you are in Cape May (the bird watching equivalent of Toy Land) all you need to do is get up when it’s light, scamper to some nearby natural area and start rummaging through your presents. Among the piled gifts you’ll find: Warblers, Tanagers, Orioles, Sparrows and Finches.

Names you’ve heard about your entire life, all there for the finding. It takes about a lifetime to get them all. That’s the good news. All you have to do is find them, pin a name to them, and that act casts a spell of binding upon each new species. Pin the name to bird, you make it yours--literally a feather in your cap. Later you get to trade your sightings with other birders. If you’ve found a species and they have not you get to share your excitement by telling them where to find it. It’s like opening the present twice.

If there was a special present you were hoping for but didn’t find, another birder can direct you. Unlike Christmas presents, birds come with blank name tags and refinding an aspired-to bird species is almost as exciting as finding it in the first place. Imagine Christmas morning dozens of times a year. It won’t put a dent in the budget. Birds are free. You won’t have to feel guilty because you got more birds than your siblings. Everything you find is to be shared. All you need is a free morning, eyes and ears, binoculars and a field guide. Don’t wait until the holidays to get necessary the tools of the trade, or you’ll miss three months of presents. Talk to the folks at Cape May Bird Observatory–The Birding Elves–they’ll fix you up. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30 a.m in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4 p.m. at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
