The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
LOVE deadlines! The smell of the newspaper presses, the smell of the wet ink, the sweat, the fear and sometimes more (I will not go into details). I remember when we printed the first ever issue of Washington: The Revolution Daily paper, with the front page) screaming “The British Might Be Coming Sometimes Soon But Not Yet”. In later editions it was edited for more excitement and to assist sales. I find myself writing this very column econds ahead of deadline, due to a series of unfortunate events. Usually, the husky Scotch editor of this paper appears outside the gates of The D’Catur Mansion a few days before deadline, bearing fresh-cut yellow roses, a bottle of Glenturret and whatever sundry gifts he can muster, in order to cajole my column out of my head (I do not do this for money, obviously — you have all seen my Saville Row suits, the fist-sized diamondencrusted head on my walking cane and my snow leopard cape — an heirloom, I stress). No, I am no cheap strumpet, for hire: I write for posterity, to aid you, my friends, and
because I crave attention. Anyways, I usually keep him waiting for a few hours, occasionally sending my staff to pour boiling oil over the wall onto him, or loosing Young Albert and the other Yorkshire Terriers of War on him. But then I hand over a crisp stack of fine paper, still warm from my typewriter. This week, though, there was a bit of a miscommunication and he went off with what he was unaware was my shopping list (it is itself a masterpiece, and contains some 393 exotic foodstuffs from around the world. How my manservant Kitchener manages to source
them all locally, I will never know), while Kitchener was dispatched by fast horse with a 500-word account of where I hid Captain Kidd’s treasure, meant to be available to all of you in the newspaper. Tsk. So here I am, after a frantic telegram from that raging Scotchman, writing at breakneck pace, about whatever comes to mind. It it fortunate indeed that I have a mind like none other, or I would be wasting precious time telling you about the $3-a-sheet paper I type on, or the artisanal squid-ink ribbons my typewriter uses. Also, about the way the sunlight is glinting off my new patent leather boots (black, with silver hooks (I am not one for modern buttons), one sized 10.5, the other 11.5 — us D’Caturs have always had differentsized feet, causing us to walk in slight circles). Or I would be telling you all about my new theory that cats are in fact the anti-christ, every single one of them. But no, I will not bother with any of that nonsense, when I have all of 500 words to describe in detail the location of that treasure.
No hassles. Just tassels.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, let’s go to the Dragon Boat Festival!
very family has its little rituals. One of our favorites has been to bid summer goodbye on Labor Day by hanging our beach badges on a fishing net. We’ve been doing this for twenty years, since before the kids needed badges, since before they could talk, since before they were born. Clipping the badges to the net marked the end of summer mornings at the Nature Center, summer afternoons at the beach, and summer evenings at Dry Dock. Kids grow up fast, and this year, I retired the tags all by myself. No step stools required, no little hands struggling the close the pin, no little voices asking, “Next year do I get a badge?” Just one slightly weepy mother sending Snapchats (likely greeted by eye rolls) to band camp and to a college dorm. Time flies. Extend your summer. Make reservations before the “real world” keeps you away until President’s Day, or Easter, or even Fourth of July. Bring the kids, bring a friend, or just bring yourself. Block out a weekend with no soccer games, or volunteer hours, or over-
time. Make up an imaginary cousin with an out-of-state wedding if you have to. Buy those tickets for Strictly Dishonorable at the East Lynne Theater Company (September 23 - October 17) or Dead Man’s Cell Phone (until October 9) or Trying (starts October 14) at Cape May Stage. Solve a murder mystery at Elaine’s. Celebrate Oktoberfest. Or come back for the Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, September 19 from 9 to 5. The Dragon Boat Festival (capemaydragonboat.com) is a charity boat race and a sort of community block party. Teams race
long, colorful boats styled after traditional Chinese watercraft, complete with dragon heads, along a 200 meter course in the harbor near the Nature Center. In between heats, they mingle and trash talk. It’s a lot of fun to watch, and even more fun to join. Teams consist of twenty paddlers and a drummer, often decked out in feathers and baubles, and there are about 25 teams, so it’s a sizeable crowd. Paddlers collect pledges and sponsorships to raise money for animal welfare, cystic fibrosis, cancer, Habitat for Humanity, and more. In the past, they’ve raised thousands, and one team, Amy’s Army, even had to add a second boat. Spectators and supporters enjoy an exciting series of races along with food tents, shopping, entertainment and a beer garden. Combined with a visit to the Harvest Brew Fest at the Physick Estate, it makes a beautiful season-extending day in Cape May. And about those badges - we’re missing 1996. If anyone has an extra, maybe we can make a deal. Next week: World War II History

The 49 Things You Should Do In Cool Cape May Get reading, and then get out there! Compiled by Natalie Craig
FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a great list of ideas to get you started. Morey’s Piers Morey’s Piers have been providing endless fun to families on the Wildwood boardwalk for decades. Dare to take on some epic roller coasters like the Sea Serpent, scare yourself silly with the Ghost Ship attraction, or check out the revival of the KONG ride 35 years later as you soar 60 feet in the air circling the legendary giant gorilla. From the Ferris wheel to delicious curly fries you won’t leave disappointed. Also for some cool activities on a hot summer day visit their water parks Raging Waters or Ocean Oasis. They were ranked number #2 out of the country’s top 40 water parks on Foursquare! moreyspiers.com. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town, then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State
Park. The CMLF offers special events and boat rides, including musical boat cruises like Rock the Boat and Tropical Tuesday cruises (reservations required). Check online for the next performance of the Summer Concert Series on the Cape May green. Free admission and parking too! You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales. The 24-acre Cape May Terminal has free mini-golf and waterfront dining at On The Rocks with live music every night. Go for a family outing or enjoy drinks on the ferry or the terminal waterfront for a romantic evening with your beloved. For more information, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive upcoming events like Hands-On History, Ghost Investigations, and Civil War, Time Travel and Seafarer’s (pirates!) Weekends you
can experience different time periods and have a great time. The many authentically restored homes amid idyllic shaded areas make it hard not to feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 8982300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see some whales. Tours take off at Utsch’s Marina on Rt 109 (previously on Wilson Drive). There are also Teen Cruises, Groove Cruises and wildlife tours, to get a closer look at the beautiful birds and marine life of Cape May. For directions or more information, call 1-888531-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. Cape May Whale Watcher offers a a Sunset Cruise, a Grand Lighthouse Cruise and weekend specials. Located at the Miss Chris Marina on Wilson Drive. Contact at 609-884-5445 www.cape-

For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit the MAC organization online at www.capemaymac.org. Arcade A trip to the beachfront is not the same without a trip to the arcade. Grab your quarters and treat the kids to games, lights and prizes or relive beloved childhood memories. Skee-ball and photo booths? No one can turn that down! Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue at Convention Hall and the other at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street. Higbee Beach It used to be a bit of a scandalous place (nude bathers – gasp!). Not anymore, though (well, not usually). Head down New England Road until it ends, walk the path – aka Mosquito Alley – towards the beach and enjoy a splendid shore. Teddy Bear Tea & Princess and Pirate Parties

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating this man for nearly a year. He told me from the start he was not interested in a long-term relationship, yet one year later, we are still together. He tells me not to get serious yet he phones me when he’s on the road and tells me he’s going to drive all night just to be with me. When I talk about moving in together, he says, “No way,” but insists we look at houses for sale on the weekends. I love him and I think he just needs a push. — Looking for a green light Dear Green Light Keep looking because all you’re going to get from this chap is a yellow signal, as in proceed with caution. You cannot make someone into something they are not. You have two choices: move on or accept your
Wise answers to perplexing questions
fate in the faint hope that one day he might move to green or suddenly find someone else, leaving you at a stop sign. In the meantime, a weekend devoted to you and nature is in order, beginning with a bicycle trip over to the lighthouse at Cape May Point and a visit to the Bird Observatory. Take advantage of the many birding treks they offer and immerse yourself in the world of birds. It’ll restore your spirit and give you clarity. Dear Answer Lady My father has lost his mind. He’s left my
mother after 28 years of marriage and taken up with a woman who, before her husband walked out, was part of their social circle. By the way, he walked out because her moral compass had a way of going awry. Now, my six-year-old daughter wants to know why we can’t have Poppy and “Aunt Nancy” over to dinner like we used to with Poppy and Mimi (my mother). How do I explain I cannot have that skank sitting in the same seat as my mother did? – Outraged Dear Outraged The Answer Lady is taking for granted your skank pronouncement is accurate. That issue aside, you cannot put your daughter in the middle of any family feud, nor say negative things about Poppy’s new friend without making yourself look small. Restaurants were invented for just this kind of situation. A visit to Lucky Bones is the solution. It’s spacious enough and loud enough to absorb any uncomfortable silences which might ensue. Bonus, the food and drinks are good are as well. Caution: no more than two drinks for you, my dear, lest your opinions find their way past your lips.

The Movie Column
M
By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society
istress America is a new film from writer/director Noah Baumbach, who was barely on my radar a few months ago. This will be my second review of a film by Baumbach in just a few months. His film While We Were Young (2014) with Ben Stiller was reviewed in this column recently. His new film is co-written by Greta Gerwig, who also stars in this film. Tracy (played by Lola Kirke) is a college freshman in New York City who is having a difficult time fitting in. She can’t seem to make any friends, the one guy she gets along with finds another girl, and her hopeful attempt to get into the school’s literary journal is met with rejection. Her mother (played by Law and Order alum Kathryn Erbe) encourages her to reach out to Brooke (Greta Gerwig), the 30-year-old daughter of her mom’s fiancé. “You two are going to be sisters,” she says. During a particularly lonely night (complete with Paul McCartney’s song “No More
Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke in Mistress America Lonely Nights” playing in the background), Tracy calls Brooke. Their friendship starts immediately. The chemistry between Gerwig and Kirke is genuine. Unfortunately some of the lines in the script seem forced (similar to showing a lonely character while playing the obvious McCartney song). Their first meeting in Times Square seems a little awkward at first, but their interaction from that moment on feels a lot more comfortable. That is, until things get ugly. But that doesn’t happen till much later. This movie provides an inside look into
the twenty-something generation, complete with a lot of good laughs along the way. All of the characters are well developed and a very good plot unfolds as a result. In the end, this was a much better film than Baumbach’s While We Were Young with better insights into people who are actually young. There was more to this film pointing toward greatness, and it nearly hits its mark (so much that it can’t be called a disappointment). The reviews have begun for new submissions to the 2015 Cape May Film Festival. Join us November 13-15 at West Cape May Borough Hall. There are a number of entries from Garden State filmmakers that will be screened. Also look for a variety of films never seen in New Jersey. Make sure you’re on our email list to learn more — send your email to capemayfilm@ hotmail.com. And remember to attend a screening of Hysteria a contemporary classic set in Victorian England about a very umm… sensational… subject! Visit www. capemayfilm.org to learn more.

Bird Droppings
B
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
y 10:00am the thermometer was already pushing 90, which is, by hawk watch standards a tad high. But it’s wind direction and calendar that dictates hawk movement and on September 1, the crowd on the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park was already buzzing about the avalanche of migrating osprey. The count’s opening day, I was there to celebrate my anniversary. Thirtynine years ago, on this date I inaugurated the count, recording only a fraction of the Osprey passing through, today. Back in 1976, Osprey populations were still suppressed by DDT. It was concern for raptor populations spawned by the DDT induced decline that dictated the need for a systematic population monitoring effort at CMP. The Count is now underwritten by Swarovski Optik, whose support is enough to provide the services of a Seasonal Counter and a Interpretive Naturalist who are there to deal with the crowds that were absent in 1976. In fact, on that first day there were precisely three visitors. One wanted to know what
I was doing standing on a table, scanning the skies. Intrigued by the prospect of seeing birds of prey, she stayed. The second was Al Nicholson, a local hawk enthusiast. The third was a rather cordial individual who soon departed. Three visitors, all day. By 10:00am on September 1, 2015, there were already 30 people on the platform. On the mound was this year’s Official Counter, Cameron Cox, a returning veteran who after more than a decade in retirement wanted to feel the old Cape May magic
one more time. Next to him was Tom Reed, another veteran counter and this year’s migratory count coordinator. My first bird was a high flying American kestrel that others found and pointed out to me. On September 1, 1976 it was my most common raptor migrant with 12 kestrels tallied. Kestrel numbers are now greatly reduced underscoring the importance of annual monitoring. Osprey numbers, on the other hand are greatly improved. One hundred and fiftynine would be tallied by Cox on opening day, the dominant migrant in a total that exceeded 1,200 hawks. Not bad for bluebird conditions. Have a great fall, Cameron. Count a million of ’em. You’ve got the skill and Cape May has the flight. I’ll look forward to seeing you under raptor-filled skies. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4pm at Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised. 609-884-2736.
