Ramblings From The Editor
C
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ape May’s City Manager says he’s not quite ready to throw in the towel. Chatter on Facebook this week suggested that Bruce MacLeod was retiring at the end of the year. That naturally provoked some good riddancestyle comments on social media. But not so fast. Apparently, it just ain’t so. I had heard the same rumors last week and called Mayor Ed Mahaney on Saturday to ask if there was any truth to the scuttlebutt. “I haven’t heard anything about that,” the mayor told me. I heard Bruce had taken part in the Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, so I left him to that, but I called him at the beginning of the week. Were the rumors true? “As we speak, I am sitting at my desk and working,” said Bruce. “I have not resigned and I have not written to anyone announcing my resignation or pending retirement. I have a contract that runs through December 31, 2016 and it is my intention to stay to the end. Obviously, things can change,” said Bruce, referring to the fact that the city council members could vote him out of a job at their
insurance — and, apparently, there is quite a wide financial gulf there. It’s my understanding this does not apply to policemen and firemen, whose families are automatically covered by their pensions. It’s possible that Bruce has been filing for retirement every year since he became eligible. Seems like the smart move. In any event, he referred to this as a private matter that should have remained private. I don’t have much to say about the Cape May firefighter who stood up at the last city council meeting to complain he was being harassed because of his long hair, other than... 1. It’s a strange story that came out of left field, and you wonder if there’s not more to it; 2. I think if you agree to wear a uniform then you need to conform to certain standards of appearance. I’m pretty far from being conservative or old-fashioned, but I don’t think soldiers, police officers or fire fighters should have long hair. I mean, even the New York Yankees prohibit long hair and beards. My two cents? If you care that much about your tresses, I’m not sure the uniformed life is for you.
³
next meeting if they felt like it, “but I plan on seeing my contract out.” So where did all the chatter come from? My guess is that someone in the local government system got word that Bruce had filed for retirement, which, I understand, public employees are advised to do annually once they become qualified for retirement, even if they don’t commit to a specific retirement date. Why? Because if you don’t and you die before retirement, your family will not receive any pension benefits, only life

The Old Fogey
T
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ime to plan for Halloween. Too early, I hear you ask? Never! How do you think I managed to have the entire D’Catur Mansion decorated to look like a colossal pumpkin last year, with the front door concealed behind the jagged mouth? And did you think the year I released 10,000 live bats at midnight, sending scores of trick-or-treaters shrieking into the night, was done without military precision? (In fairness, we perhaps should have prepared a wee bit more thoroughly on that occasion: my faithless manservant, Kitchener, found that he was 9,000 bats short the week before, and so quietly — and catastrophically — sourced the remainder from a disreputable source in South America, not realizing they were actually vampire bats, and by the time the crates were opened, they were ravenous. In a sense it made for an altogether more authentic Halloween, people howling and running in the dark with bats affixed to their throats, but all in all, it was perhaps a little too traumatic). And those zombies that year? Were they not a triumph? It took some special talent to
ship them all from Wildwood in time, I tell you. Okay, so there may still be a few roaming the Point, but that all adds to Cape May’s rather special atmosphere. This year, in a tribute to that movie masterpiece, The Wizard of Oz, we are going to have a troupe of flying monkeys. I can sense your shudders from here, and am alive with excitement! Who in their right mind would wish to recreate those airborne monsters, I hear you cry! Well, I share your anxiety, and as you know, am no friend of the monkeys in general (they have never forgiven us for topping the evolutionary ladder, and will topple us
at the slightest opportunity). We will not be using chimpanzees or baboons. We have perfected a flying version of the capuchin. These delightful little chaps are nature’s butlers and my thinking is that by giving them wings, when Halloween is over and done, they will simply take employment in Cape May’s better houses as domestic staff, errand boys and a militia in case of emergency. But for the matter at hand, all 300 of them will fly from the Mansion’s tallest tower at a signal from myself, their splendid little bat wings shining in the moonlight, their (false) fangs glittering, and the buttons on their nice waistcoats glinting like gems. They have been trained to make minor mischief, of course: snatching hats and pocket watches, tweaking noses and executing effective but non-fatal wedgies. Test runs have shown we have a 96 per cent efficiency rating, with only a handful of pets consumed, and just one automobile jump-started and taken for a joyride. Also, suitcase-sized atomic bomb was taken from the D’Catur vaults, but flying monkeys will have their fun, eh?
No hassles. Just tassels.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, remembering the lessons of World War Two
ou know there are lessons to be learned about the Victorian era in Cape May, but you can also learn something about World War Two. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) hosts a lecture on Sunday, October 11 called “D-Day: Why It Still Matters.” Presented by Colonel Cole Kingseed, PhD, the lecture explores how the war changed the role of the United States on the global stage and ponders what might have happened if D-Day had failed. Colonel Kingseed is a 30-year Infantry veteran who taught history at the US Military Academy at West Point. He is the author of the bestselling book, Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs of Major Dick Winters and other important historical works, and has appeared as a featured expert on the History Channel. The lecture will be held at the Cape Island Baptist Church, 115 Gurney Street. Tickets are $30 for the lecture only, and $50 for the lecture and a reception at The Queen
Victoria B&B with wine and tapas. Prepare for the lecture by taking the 90 minute War at the Shore trolley tour and learn about Cape May’s strategic location, the threat of enemy subs, and more. Tickets are $20 for adults; $15 for children ages three to 12. Or visit the World War Two Lookout Tower on Sunset Boulevard, part of the Harbor Defense of the Delaware System, Fort Miles. The Tower played an important part of the nation’s coastal defense, and a visit gives you a look at daily life for the young men who served there, as
well as an emotional look at the impact of the war on the people of Cape May County. Part of the exhibit is wheelchair-accessible. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children and $5 for active and retired military with valid ID. Free parking across the street. The Naval Air Station Wildwood Museum sits in the airplane hangar of a dive-bomber training facilit located at the Cape May County Airport, 500 Forrestal Road, Rio Grande. In this hands-on museum, you can sit in an airplane cockpit, listen to period music or climb a control tower. Start with an introductory briefing, browse the gift shop, or take advantage of many great photo-ops. You’ll also learn Coast Guard history, including the All Available Boats exhibit commemorating the heroes of September 11, 2001. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for children, free for active duty military with ID. Parking is free. Visit capemaymac.org or call 800275-4278 for more information and for combination discounts and coupons. Next week: Drink Like a Victorian

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I belong to a gym and in the men’s locker room there are open showers. The other day, I went in to wash my hands and a man was taking a shower. Before I was done, he turned off the water and approached me to ask me a question — naked, with a small towel wrapped around his neck and no apparent motivation to wrap it lower. My hands were wet and I needed a paper towel. To get it, I had to reach across him and then, in order to make his point, he lifted his leg onto the sink and leaned into me. Full frontal exposure and dripping water. All I wanted was a paper towel. I gave him some lame response and excused myself. Was there some way of gently letting him know how totally uncomfortable he made me or should I have ignored
Wise answers to perplexing questions
it, as I did? I fear going in there ever again. — Abashed Dear Abashed The Answer Lady is still laughing. See, this is why nice guys always get taken advantage of. Next time, simply say, “Dude, how about covering up before we talk?” Or go to the Linen Outlet, at Antiques Emporia, and buy a towel. Be like a Boy Scout. Always prepared. Dear Answer Lady I have written to you before about texting a man who does not seem to be interested in
a monogamous relationship with me, but I can’t help it and when I didn’t hear from him for a month, I did text him. I don’t want to be so needy, but I can’t stop myself. Can you help? — A Friend In Need Dear Friend The Answer Lady cannot help. She can only advise. You must believe in yourself and your ability to find your own true love. But that will happen only when you open yourself to the possibility and stop closing the door on happiness by chasing negative energy. You know, unplugging for a while might not be a bad thing for you. And a makeover. Maybe working on the external will help you with the internal as well. Grab a girlfriend, or better yet, your mother. Start with a morning of pampering at Cape May Day Spa. Splurge and get the Perfect Escape package. Then, an afternoon at Cape May Winery, followed by a shopping spree at Caroline’s Boutique. Pick out something girly and wind up the night dancing at the Brown Room. Start feeling good about being you and you’ll be surprised at how quickly other good things will follow.

The Movie Column
W
By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society
ho can forget The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan’s 1999 classic thriller. You know the one with the “I see dead people” line. Classic. Excellent film. It is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. And it is one of the few on my list that would be considered part of the suspense genre. I don’t consider it a horror f lick — not that film. I’m not at all a fan of horror movies. I think they’re disturbing, annoying, and just overall pandering to the base of humanity. Do they frighten me? In more ways than one, yes. They frighten me because of their antics — and because people actually think that they’re good. Still scarier — some people think they’re art. The difference between horror and suspense is like the difference between “Freddie” Hitchcock and Freddie Krueger. Right? You know what I’m talking about? Yes, they both have elements of fear and maybe a thrill, but the suspense film is higher brow. It either appeals to your intel-
I see... bad movies. You can forgo The Visit. lectual side or at the very least does not exclusively pander to your fears. So when Shyamalan’s latest film, The Visit, was released, I felt the need to see it. All his films since The Sixth Sense have fallen short. Could this be the one that shows he’s not a one-hit wonder? Two young people visit their grandparents. At first, the old folks seem odd. We soon learn this is an understatement. The suspense builds slowly, the reveals come out measured. The result? He had me for about 80% of the movie. I really thought
that he may have been back in good form. The two children are wonderfully played by Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould. Deanna Dunagan and Peter McRobbie creepily played Nana and Pop Pop. Never had I been so hopeful for Shyamalan to do nearly as well as The Sixth Sense (I was already convinced he’ll never be on par or better). And then... In the last 20% of the film, he lost me. I mean, he really lost me. When did this guy become the purveyor of lowbrow horror f licks? Was it some time after he crashed and burned with The Last Airbender (2010)? If you like cheap thrills and cheaper laughs, then this movie may be for you. I’m over it. I’m thankful The Sixth Sense was made as it will likely be the last Shyamalan movie I see if he decides to make this kind moving forward. Pass on The Visit and rent (better still, buy) The Sixth Sense instead. It’s a masterpiece from a one-hit wonder.

Bird Droppings
A
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
n inordinate amount of attention is paid to birds that are seen infrequently. And the less frequently a bird is seen, the more popular it becomes. Take the juvenile Baird’s sandpiper our birding group found in the South Cape May Meadows last Monday. The crowd went wild. Baird’s sandpiper is a brown, mudsucking, sausage-sized-and-shaped bird. Nowhere near as impressive as the Caspian tern that was flying overhead, yet the crowd only had eyes for the sandpiper. Caspian terns, which like the sandpiper are migrating through, are uncommon fall migrants. But Baird’s sandpiper is seen once or twice a year, so it’s rare. In birding, rare beats uncommon and accidental beats rare. Maybe I’ve sold Baird’s sandpiper short. As subcompact shorebirds go, Baird’s is a designer bird — a silk purse among sow’s ears. Juveniles are honey colored with pale feather edges, imparting a scalloped appearance. Caspian terns look a great deal like royal
terns, which are common hereabouts in September — but the coral-colored bills are arresting and the size is impressive. Unfortunately for the tern, another uncommon shorebird was sighted which then drew the eyes of all who had already gotten their minimum daily allotment of Baird’s sandpiper. The newcomers name was Wilson’s phalarope. Breeding in the prairies, the phalarope is a very uncommon spring and fall migrant through Cape May. Phalaropes score high when it comes to
animation. Part dervish, the birds spin in the water, creating a vortex that brings food to the surface. There you have it... a honey-colored sandpiper, a coral-billed diver and a petite ballerina all vying to be appreciated. To birders, a paralyzing wealth of possibilities all in the same place at the same time. Goes a long way toward explaining Cape May’s allure. Ma Nature deals birders a new hand every morning. Next week the sandpiper and phalarope may be gone but a Hudsonian godwit or American golden plover might take their places. See you Monday — 7:30 sharp. South Cape May. I don’t know what we’ll find. But that’s precisely why I will be there along with CMBO’s host of leaders. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4pm at Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised — call 609-884-2736.
