The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e had a pope, here in Cape May, once. He was a fish. But more of that later: my thoughts turned to all things Papal when watching that charming old chap in his little car the other day. “He’s a better pope than the one you chose for us,” my faithful but caustic manservant, Smithers, observed drily as he walked past the Televisual Room en route to take Young Albert for a walk. Albert, usually my steadfast companion when it comes to our “Teevee hour” in the afternoon, wanted nothing to do with the whole Papal thing: I fear he is a Protestant and cannot abide frippery or ceremony of any kind (his fast temper and general lack of humor adds to this suspicion). So Kitchener was walking him in my stead, and preparing suitably by putting on iron gauntlets, stout shin guards and a cricketer’s box over his genitals. I have no idea what Kitchener’s belief system is, though I did once see him sign for an
Amazon delivery of some large dimensions that had “scale model Aztec altar stone” on the side, and so I fear he practices some darker arts. “Oscar was a fine pope,” I shot back, “he was just ahead of his time!” In truth, Oscar was something of a compromise: we had, here in Cape May, had a run of bad luck with our ceremonial leaders: our last king had gone stark staring mad and decided to invade England. We all played along, of course (the Cape May way is not direct confrontation when faced with a plan we do not like, but to
play along and feign enthusiasm whilst secretly doing absolutely nothing. In this case we all formed up as the king’s army and marched down to the harbor with him, ushering his royal madness aboard a fast ship with assurances we would follow on more cramped, less regal vessels. As soon as he was out of sight we all went home. So Oscar was a fish. The reasoning being that a fish was lnot smart enough to be an actual nuisance, whilst being able to fulfill all the ceremonial duties. We even had a Popemobile for him: a glass bowl, raised high so the faithful could see. To keep him company we stocked it with a selection of sea creatures and plants. Tragically, the day of his inaugural parade was mid-July and rather hot, and poor Pope Oscar sat in the heat for a good hour before we set off. By that time, he was, to all intents and purpose, gumbo. So it was not a total loss, I am sure you all agree.
No hassles. Just tassels.

A
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, drinking like a Victorian
lthough they had a reputation for being dainty and prim, Victorians had strong stomachs, and they enjoyed their liquor. Alcohol was widely available to Victorians and was an important part of most social occasions, especially funerals, where the number of guests and their level of drunkenness showed respect for the deceased. The upper classes had wine with every course of their complicated dinners, mixing several types over the course of the meal. Members of the lower classes chose gin or beer. Drinkers could buy it legally, at licensed pubs or shops, or they could bend the rules and buy home brews from their landladies. Vendors also sold alcohol on city streets, from carts or from casks that they carried on their shoulders like milkmaids. Each cask could serve dozens of customers and billions of microbes, as the single, oft-reused cup was rarely washed. Don’t get that authentic when you party like a Victorian in Cape May. Celebrate Oktoberfest like Queen Victoria’s German cousins. Crown Prince Ludwig I and Princess
Therese of Saxony — Hildburghausen started the tradition by celebrating their 1810 wedding with a beer bash. Oktoberfest takes over Jackson Street on October 3 from 10 to 5, with food, shopping, music, and a clean cup for every customer. This is a popular event, mixing crisp fall air with cold beer. Once your find your favorite beer, you can learn what to eat with it. Should you enjoy shellfish with your fruity Belgian Saison or hummus with your Hefeweizen? Does pale ale or pilsner pair better with pizza? Do people really drink dark beer with peanut butter?
Learn how to be a proper matchmaker to your beer at an educational dinner at the Mad Batter Restaurant. MAC presents its five course beer dinner at 7:30 on October 9. The dinner is $75, and admission is limited. To emulate upper class Victorians, the Washington Inn, built in 1840, is the perfect setting. Dress up and join the Cape May Wine School on October 10, and learn to pair wine with food in a restaurant that boasts an outstanding wine cellar. This popular class is limited to 80 students, so get your $40 tickets in advance. Call 609-884-5404 or 800-2754278, or visit the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts online at capemaymac.org. Or, work up an appetite with the Champagne Brunch Walk on October 11 at 10:30am. After a guided walking tour of Cape May’s architecture, enjoy a Southern-style breakfast buffet, complete with mimosas, at The Chalfonte Hotel. Tickets are $20, $15 for children. Victorian teetotalers quaffed lemonade or tea. Emulate our sober forebears with a crisp Stewart’s Root Beer, or by skipping the champagne in your mimosa.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wedding is coming up in the spring and I still haven’t picked a best man. The problem is my parents insist that my brother should be it. But I would prefer someone I really like as opposed to the golden boy who never disappoints. I don’t know whether to stand my ground or give in. – Cornered Dear Cornered Traditional weddings are rarely about the two people getting married. Mostly they are about the parents and their friends, not yours. As to the best mane, of course it must be your brother. Why would you want to impose that negative onus on the proceedings? Your best friend will understand. That’s why he’s your bestie. So, relax, enjoy and celebrate by rounding up your best friend
Wise answers to perplexing questions
and your brother. A bar crawl is definitely in order to smooth out all the rough edges or at least put them at bay. Start out at SeaSalt, moving down Beach Avenue to Cabanas and Carney’s. Then up to the Ugly Mug and ending up at The Boiler Room. When the big day nears, remember the good times and buy them something nice at Galvanic as a groom’s gift. Now say oooom, breathe and be happy. Dear Answer Lady What am I going to do, Answer Lady? I
have a big dinner coming up at which I am being honored and was asked to give a short acceptance speech. There will be about 100 people present. I am beside myself. I bought a very expensive dress a couple months ago for the event even though it was a bit snug. I was sure I’d lose seven pounds but neither my waistline nor the scale has budged an inch or a pound. I was thinking of doing a two-day fast before the event but I don’t know that will even help, plus I don’t want to pass out during my big moment. Shall I go out and buy another dress? — Overwrought Dear Overwrought Fear not. The Answer Lady has the answer. One word: Spanx. Head on over to Lace Silhouettes and they will outfit you with the proper undergarments, the arsenal of all well-dressed ladies. But I might add that once your event is over, you might want to pop by North Beach Gym and see about a membership. And just to jump start your energy level, also see about taking on a trainer just to give you the inspiration you need to shed those pounds and tone those arms.

The Movie Column
W
By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society
hen Lily Tomlin is your grandmother, can anything really be traditional? The film Grandma opens with Elle, a poet and professor (played by Tomlin), breaking up with Olivia, her female lover (played by Judy Greer). The lover is clearly at least 30 years Tomlin’s junior. It seems the difference between this movie and so many others with intergenerational mismatches is that the Tomlin’s character recognizes the girl is too young for her. Older male characters rarely have this revelation. Soon after Olivia leaves, Elle has a visitor, her granddaughter Sage (played by Julia Garner). The young actress has received several festival awards for her work in a variety of films. Sage has an unplanned pregnancy and needs $600 for an abortion. The abortion is scheduled already for that evening at one of the best clinics in the city with little chance of rescheduling — so time is short. She doesn’t hesitate to ask her grandmother for money. The problem is: Elle has no cash of that sort having just recently paid off her
Lily Tomlin stars in Grandma credit cards (which she then chopped up!). So although she’s not much immediate help, she spends the entire film looking for the money to make the appointment. The remainder of the film is spent visiting a variety of people — some of the scenes work, some don’t. The confrontations are led by Tomlin, who’s character is essentially Tomlin-esque. That is to say, I don’t know Tomlin so can’t say if this character is actually like her — but it’s a characters she is certainly familiar playing. The visit with the father-to-be is particularly gratifying as
the weasel (who does not want to own up to his part in this predicament) is given swift justice by way of a hockey stick to his groin thanks to Tomlin. That felt good. The characters that we meet along the way are deep and genuine. Sam Elliot plays a former lover of Tomlin’s character (before she migrated to “the other team”). It’s one of only two primary males in this feminine world, aside from the loser father-to-be. Elliot’s character was permitted to stand his ground and run opposite the predominant world-view of the story without the powers that be (namely Director Paul Weitz) making him look a fool or otherwise getting a shot to the groin. By now you’ve caught the world view of this film. If that has been offensive to you, you’re probably staying away from this film. Good. You won’t appreciate this film if you’re offended on principle. It is, however, a film well-acted of a modern tale well-told. Now time for a plug: Remember the Cape May Film Festival is November 13-15. Visit www.capemayfilm.org for details.

Bird Droppings
S
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
eptember is over. Which means tourists out, birders in. If you visit Cape May Point State Park and you aren’t wearing binoculars, you are in the minority. If you step onto the hawk watch platform and you are not wearing binoculars, you are tantamount to naked. So if you don’t want to under-dress, stop by Cape May Bird Observatory and see what’s new in binocular fashion for fall 2015. You can never go wrong with Zeiss or Leica or Swarovski. The best news is that rebates are rampant this fall so you won’t have to spend the rest of your life paying off designer optics. In fact there are some very commendable optics that cost less than dinner for two in Cape May. Tipping the store salesperson is optional and parking is free. So are all the birds you’ll see with your new binoculars. Remember the most expensive binoculars on the planet are only expensive for one day. After that every look is free and quality binoculars are built to last a lifetime. Your biggest problem might well be deciding which grandchild to leave them to after your life
reaches its credit limit Did you know that there are ten thousand species of birds on the planet. No single person has seen them all. First prize for getting them all is a lifetime of travel, starting, of course with Cape May, the planet’s most celebrated birding location. So that’s 10,000 species of birds minus the 400 you’ll find in Cape May. Add one trip to Peru and East Africa and you’ll spend the rest of your life mopping up. Add a trip to Australia and Eilat Israel in April and you’ll be in
the upper ranks of globe-trotting birders who will be using their frequent flier miles to get to Cape May this fall. You can pick out the European birders by their dark, dull green clothing and the angled eyepieces on their scopes. Their evident confusion relating to “football” and “soccer” is also telling. But their birding skills are superlative, putting a few local experts to shame. If you’d like a taste of Europe but can’t afford the airfare because you just plopped down a chunk of change on new optics, take a trip to the hawk watch platform. It’s as cosmopolitan as the cosmos gets and American English is still the language of the realm. If you forget your optics there are loaner Swarovski binoculars on hand, providing you understand the nature of a short-term loan. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4pm at Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised — call 609-884-2736.
