The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
heard - actually heard, with my very own ears, if you can believe it - a faintheart declare the other day “that’s me done with swimming until summer”!! I was staggered, I assure you. Actually, so was he, in a more literal sense, as I instantly struck him on the back of the head with my silver-topped walking cane. Have you, my friends, ever heard of such a cowardly attitude? I make a point of swimming every single morning, and damn the season that tries to stop me! Why, the Ancient Cape May Bathing Society has its annual “BlueBalls” swimming event on January 1 at precisely dawn (the name BlueBalls of course comes from the bright blue soccer ball that is retrieved by the first person to successfully break the ice (or not), swim out to the Concrete Ship and grab the ball from the bow. I am not sure why it is blue: it may be a crude sexual innuendo.) And we have never canceled that, even that record cold snap when our first swimmer, Wally Herbert, plunged into the ocean and instantly froze solid in a cartoonish cube of
ice. We simply hauled him out, dragged him back to The Brown Room and chipped bits off him for our whisky. In fact, swimming in saltwater that is precisely one tenth of a degree below freezing is one of the secrets of longevity: it is a fact that under such conditions, one’s heart beats only once an hour and one effectively stops ageing for the period one is swimming. I admit, I am less hardcore than I used to be, and now have my staff rub me with a thick layer of lard before I plunge in: this is both useful for staving off hypothermia, and strangely pleasurable.
Also, did you know that freezing water has unique properties of visibilty? I swear that one year I swam out round the Point and when I ducked my head under, I could see all the way to the bottom, and could clearly pick out the individual steeples and rooftops of Olde Cape Maye, sunk to the bottom of the ocean ten score of years ago. I would have dived down and retrieved a roof tile as souvenir with which to strike naysayers, but that happens also to be the spot we sunk that top secret Nazi U-boat in 1943, and it sunk with its experimental A-bomb armed and ready to detonate at the slightest pressure (why do you think that diving is prohibited at The Point? And that we have a watchtower built nearby and manned stealthily 24/7?). I really should get around to defusing that at some stage. Anyways, I will have none of this “millennial” crybaby attitude towards swimming year-round. I expect all of you to be on the beach the first day the thermometer dips below freezing, wearing nothing but a smile and a pound of lard. And the lard is optional.
No hassles. Just tassels.

C
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, West Cape May Lima Bean Festival
ape Mayniacs are accustomed to a whole town paying tribute to the vegetable, but others find such dedication to a humble bean surprising. Lima beans thrive on our warm weather and sandy soil, and when demand was high, the plants dominated the landscape. Today, there are only a few acres devoted to them. California and Delaware are larger producers, but West Cape May still calls itself Lima Bean Capital of the World. Lima beans probably originated in Guatemala 8000 years ago and spread across South America following native trade routes. Farmers from Lima, Peru shipped them to Europe and North America, and those shipping crates, marked “Lima,” supposedly gave them their name. The beans caught on quickly in Europe and are commonly found in paella and cassoulet. In the Americas, they were served plain, in soups, and of course, in succotash. The lima bean, rich as it is in fiber,
iron and manganese, needs kale’s press agent. Though limas were once a dinner table staple, they now get no respect. Many people outright refuse to eat them, having eaten their fill in childhood. Many more just forget about them when it comes time to make the weekly grocery list. Maybe canned limas, served mushy, have masked their tastiness. Maybe Sylvester the Cat exclaimed, “Suffering succotash!” one too many times and damaged the brand. Maybe their reputation suffers from association with the Depression,
when they were often served in meatless pot pies because they are a cheap source of protein. These days, only West Cape May shows the lima any love. The Lima Bean Festival is a typical street fair in some ways, with artists booths mingling with food vendors, but many of the stands are lima bean specific. There are usually a variety of lima beanbased foods for sale, ranging from ice cream to cookies to quesadillas. You can buy tee shirts, artwork, earrings and necklaces featuring the lima bean. You will hear more than your share of lima bean puns, and find the Kanye-themed, “Lima let you finish, but…” sprinkled through many conversations. In previous years, attendees have enjoyed the lima bean toss, a lima bean eating contest, recipe contests and the selection, by lottery, of Miss Lima Bean. You may even hear a performance of the “Lima Bean Blues.” The festival takes place from 9-5 this Saturday, October 10 in Wilbraham Park. Rain date is Sunday, October 11.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer LadyMy best friend has asked me to be godfather to his son along with my ex-wife, who is still very close to them. I don’t want to do this for any number of reasons, not the least of which is that I don’t think I’d be a good parent, which is why I have no children, which is why I am now divorced. But I don’t want to let my friend down. Is there any diplomatic way of getting out of this? – Godfather? Dear Godfather? Take a ride on the wild side and step up to the plate. Do you really think Michael Correlone would turn down a chance like this? Think of it this way, the odds are in your favor that you will NOT end up taking care of said baby and you can pass for the Ultimate Godfather with the most superficial of efforts. First, stop off at Lynn Arden’s Children Shop
Wise answers to perplexing questions
and buy him some very cool play clothes. Next, pop over to Dellas Five & Dime and get him some safe toys that he’ll be able to play with in a few months. Finally, go to the Zoo Company and pick up a baby-safe stuffed teddy. Present these gifts at the baptism party. Your friends will be impressed and the good juju your good intentions generate will bank karma points for you in heaven. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I went on vacation with another couple, whom we’ve known for a
long time but not well. It was a Rome in three days tour and the bus left at promptly 8am. We were on our own from 6pm until the next morning. The problem is they were never on time for anything. Two of the three days they never made the tour bus and we were always waiting for them to arrive for dinner reservations. The upshot of it is we stopped speaking to each other when we nearly missed the plane back and have not spoken since. I feel badly but their behavior was unconscionable. Still, this is such a small town. Do you think I should offer an olive branch? – In the Deep Freeze Dear Deep Freeze Small town or no, it is better to have liked and lost than to spend a lifetime pretending you will ever like these people again. Besides, an olive branch simply enables their rude, inconsiderate behavior. The Answer Lady has a better idea, next time, spend your vacation with people you know you like. In the meantime, exorcise those travel demons with reservations at the Black Duck Restaurant and stop off at Sunset Liquors for a nice bottle of Italian wine.

ottie’s View: Two Stars, they gave it two stars? Come on! Luckily I ignored their less-than-stellar opinion of The Intern, a delightful story about a millennium female (Jules, played by Anne Hathaway) who started her own company. Her investors want someone “older and wiser” to be the CEO, while she would continue to be the idea person. Does she really want to hand over the reins to someone who has the final say if there is a disagreement? On the other hand, she has way too little time for her home life and she thinks that bringing in a CEO might give her more time for a personal life. Enter the intern, Ben (played by Robert DeNiro) who is a retiree that’s been successful professionally and personally but wants to stay active and misses the corporate world. Jules is reluctant to allow anyone in to her world, but little by little DeNiro becomes everyone’s favorite go-to guy — including hers. (Bet you didn’t see that coming).
De Niro and Hathaway are good together It’s billed as a comedy, and the argument against it was that it ran much longer than 90 minutes (which is about the length of time they say a comedy can sustain itself). Well, this is more than a comedy; it has drama and an interesting story line. I found myself spending a great deal of time thinking how this would be an excellent TV series. So many of the peripheral characters sparked my interest, leaving me wanting to hear their stories as well and find out what happens to them. Mal’s View: This film was delightful.
Ben is the kind of retiree I’d like to be. His life is in order and he dresses well. (Prepare to get closet envy.) He readily copes with being an intern and is truly unflappable. He bonds with the young men in the office and brings them coffee with a decent helping of clues. Jules is the kind of woman I’d be happy to work for — in fact, I have and it was great. There was one scene in the film that made me think a bit. Jules laments what has happened to X generation and millennial males. She wonders out loud, “When did we start calling girls ‘Women’ and men ‘Boys’?” So do I. I had not expected that one effect of breaking the glass ceiling was that men would fall down through it. So two thumbs up for The Intern (Hey can we say that? Better run that by legal.). Make plans to see movies the right way, on a big screen with lots of friends nearby! Bird Droppings
O
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
f course you must have heard about the zone-tailed hawk. It wasn’t a question but the conversation starter directed toward Mellisa, my PT trainer, drew only a blank stare. Curiously word of this earth-tipping event seemed not to have filtered down to society’s non-birding strata. So if you, like Mellisa are not in the know... know that at 9:53am on September 23, a zone-tailed hawk, was recorded at Cape May Point Hawk Watch. What’s so special about this hawk? It doesn’t typically appear closer to here than the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and most of this tropical and subtropical population is found in Central and South America. It’s also only the second time the bird has been tallied in Cape May. What was a tropical bird of prey doing in temperate Cape May? Migrating south? What prompted it to be so out of range? Some genetic twist that prompted the bird to take the path less followed which in this
bird’s case led north and east. Why this predilection for waywardness? Ultimately survival. The world is constantly changing. Birds and other organisms hedge their bets by trying unorthodox strategies. Most fail and birds that are programed to follow a failed strategy do not survive to pass this defect on. If our ancestors had all elected to stay up in the trees, there would be no biped locomotion, no Cape May Point 5k run, no pedestrian traffic on the mall, no surfing,
no climbing to the top of the lighthouse, no standing at the rail of the Hawk Watch, waiting for the next mega rarity to appear over the horizon. Now, the big question. Did I see it. No. I’m a have-not, though I’ve seen lots of zonetailed hawks in both the southeastern US. Now, boys and girls, it’s time to be on the lookout for pioneering western hummingbirds. Keep your feeders up into November. One chilly morning you might be treated to the sight of a red-tinged hummingbird sipping sugar water at your feeder — a Rufous or Allens, perhaps and a consolation prize for having missed the zone-tailed. If your feeder attracts a broadbilled hummingbird, it will trump zonetailed hawk. Broad-billed has never been recorded in New Jersey. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4pm at Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised — call 609-884-2736.
