Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
he City of Cape May this week reached a resolution of the comp time crisis that had swirled around Lieutenant Chuck Lear for the last eight months. The issue led to the demotion of Lear’s boss, Chief Rob Sheehan, in March and plunged Cape May Police Department into chaos. A special hearing was held on Tuesday, during which Lear’s solicitor and the city’s solicitors hashed out an agreement. Lear will no longer face disciplinary action and will retire on July 1 next year. It sounds like a good deal for Lear, who had been considering retirement and who now won’t have a black mark on his record, since, as city solicitor Tony Monzo stated on Tuesday, the comp time was approved by Sheehan and his predecessor, Diane Sorantino. Of course, what Monzo did NOT say is that it’s clear to anyone with a sensible head on their shoulders that City Manager Bruce MacLeod (and, I’m fairly certain, Mayor Ed Mahaney) were ALSO well aware that Lear was using comp time. This entire issue has been a big, steam-
ing crock of BS that has seen Rob Sheehan lose his rightful place as police chief. There will be more to say on this issue... Rather appropriately, the topic for this Sunday’s TEDx conference is “Truth Be Told”, a day-long treat of talks from some very smart people. (I just wish the truth was told more often than it is by the current administration in City Hall.) I was one of the speakers at the first TEDx, three years ago, and I’m delighted to see that they’ve seriously improved the roster since then...
³
Among the folks I am most looking forward to listening to this Sunday are: Marc Summers, a TV host and former standup comic who will discuss the issue of political correctness in the entertainment industry; Jeff Zucker, a business leader who will be examining how social media might spark a revolution in our healthcare system; and Andy Suzuki and the Method, which sounds like a compelling interactive presentation on how audiences can influence a performance. Don’t know what TEDx is? It’s the Cape May version of TED, an organization that has been responsible for countless inspiring talks performed by the likes of Steve Jobs (“How to Live Before You Die”) and Ken Robinson (“Do Schools Kill Creativity?”). I highly recommend both of these. The Cape May TED is organized by my old pal Norris Clark, himself an excellent speaker on many a subject. The event is being held this Sunday, October 18, from 10am to 5pm, at the The Paul Schmidtchen Theater at Lower Cape May Regional High School. Tickets cost $75. You can still buy them, by visiting tedxcapemay.com. See you there!

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
thought I saw snow there, the other day, and the shocking discovery sent me scurrying back to The D’Catur Mansion to dig out my (and Young Albert’s, and indeed my whole staff’s) winter woolies. As it happens, it was now snow, but a surprisingly latrge flake of dandruff from my powdered wig (as you all know, but I will repeat as I like nothing more than to talk about muyself, I have a fine head of fiery red hair, but am rather fond of a style of hairpieces that dates back to my youth. I have ornate ones as large as an automobile for Fancy occasions, practical ones that can — and have — deflected a bullet for times of war, and formal ones for when my civic duties are needed. These wigs are works of art and culled from the foir corners of the globe (excepting of course Wildwood: really, there are some things no gentleman would put atop his head) and it is fair to say that not everyone takes care of their hair the way we proud Cape Mayans do). But still, that foretaste of colder weather had me announcing to my staff that shorts
are now forbidden until Spring, and fur is allowed. I have a conf licted relationship with fur, not helped by my glamorous but terrifying Aunt Joy, who used to alternately beat with a stick and smother us kids with kisses, all the while clad in a voluminous mink greatcoat. In my time, when I used to hunt, I would endeavor to use every scrap of the animal, and in the case of my crusade against Cape May’s mice (which I hunted with specially crafted long-barrelled 0.0005” caliber rifle) I kept every single tiny pelt and had them all made into a splendid cape. I wear it only
on special occasions, as I tend to be chased down the street by hundreds of cats, and once came upon the visiting Billy Smert Elephant Circus as it paraded into town, and spooked the entire herd. Now, of course, I am very much against hunting, but do like to dust off my vintage furs for Winter, and insist that my entire staff take their pick, too, down to Young Albert, whose favorite is a tiny white fur jerkin and matching pants. He resembles nothing so much as a malevolent polar bear when wearing it, but I have not the heart to tell him. Admittedly, the smell of mothballs tends to be overpowering when we step out en masses, and local dogs go berserk, but you have not lived if you have not felt fur on bare skin, and the whistle of a stout stick landing on one’s buttocks, along with a soothing voice saying “you BAD little boy, NOW look what you made me do….” … anyways, I shall leave that kind of talk for another day, in the interests of common decency. I am off to find my favorite fur muff!
No hassles. Just tassels.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, try birding!
ou can’t avoid it. Come to Cape May often enough, and you’ll become a birder. It starts when a laughing gull steals your sandwich, or a skimmer scoops its dinner out of the ocean in front of you, or someone tells you the egret uses his yellow feet to stir up prey. Or maybe it doesn’t. Now you’re curious — maybe even curious enough to don the vest of the birder. That kind of curiosity helped to build Cape May. It’s a Victorian town, and birding was big with the Victorians. John J. Audubon completed his landmark Birds of America in 1838, when young Victoria was a new queen, and enthusiastic amateur scientists were eager to seek the beautiful birds in the flesh, or rather, in the feather. Then, as now, a trip to Cape May could guarantee several sightings. Cape May’s geography makes it attractive to more species of migratory birds than any place else on Earth — literally. One could make the argument that our little corner of the world is THE best corner for birds. There are fresh water spots right near the ocean, and the cape itself acts like a funnel, bringing
birds together to rest before they tackle the Delaware Bay. Where things are good for birds, things are good for birders, who come in droves. There’s room in those vests for a wallet — birders spend about $300 million a year in Cape May County. The Cape May Fall Festival welcomes birders to the fall migration. This three-day event is a chance to educate birders, encourage potential birders, and to celebrate birding. The goal is to help attendees see lots of birds — so many birds that this year’s theme is So. Many. Birds. There are lectures, equipment
demonstrations, walks, boat rides, and field trips, all designed for birders. The event runs Thursday, October 22 to Sunday October 25. Registration is $65 per day, or $175 for all three days. Visit njaudubon.org for more information. The Grand Hotel is the location of the keynote lectures. On Friday, Dale Rosselet and Kevin Karlson will discuss “Birding by Impression.” Saturday’s speaker is David Lindo, The Urban Birder. At Convention Hall, The Bird Show promises free family fun, with exhibits and live shows including The Raptor Project with Jonathan Wood. Guided walks though Higbee Beach, The Meadows, Rea Farm and Cox Hall Creek will bring birders close to warblers, finches and sparrows. At Cape May Point, they’ll look for hawks, eagles and falcons, and they’ll head to Stone Harbor in search of egrets, oystercatchers and ospreys. Pete Dunne and Friends will offer master classes in bird identification. Vendors will showcase new gadgets to fill up those vest pockets — binoculars, lens cleaners, hats, new books, insect repellent and more.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Halloween is just around the corner and my granddaughter, who is seven, is looking at costumes. She is leaning toward Elsa from Frozen or Li’l Mermaid, but my daughter wants her to be a character from that horrible show The Walking Dead so they can be a mommy-daughter team and compete in Cape May’s Halloween Parade. She’s not even permitted to watch the show, why should she be made to dress like the undead? – Aghast Dear Aghast The Answer Lady’s first reaction is, lighten up. Any activity in which mother and daughter can bond is a good one. But what does your granddaughter think? If she finds the costume for her and/or her mother too scary to process, then Mommy must move to Plan B. Why not
Wise answers to perplexing questions
make a Walking Dead costume for them both that is not too scary. Before the October 18 Halloween Parade and Trick-or-Treat on the Washington Street Mall, which is just before the parade, enjoy a big-girl brunch at the Mad Batter in costume, of course. You can join the fun too and go as the Fairy Godmother. Dear Answer Lady My mother-in-law has invited us to yet another Sunday afternoon dinner. Our presence at these is pretty much mandatory, which is fine. I like family get-togethers. My prob-
lem is that the woman cannot cook to save her soul. It kills me to eat that overcooked roast beef that no amount of gravy can cover up, served with the canned green beans and the store-bought pie. I have tried offering to host, but am met with a polite, yet chilly, no. Is there no way to tweak this so it is a palatable affair? — Gagging at the Thought Dear Gagging The Answer Lady is sympathetic to your plight — but wanting to show up your motherin-law in the kitchen will never be a win-win. Gag you must. Sometimes we have to take one for the team. But to make the affair gag-free, go to Cape May Winery and buy a bottle of their Isaac Smith port wine. A couple glasses of that should make it all go down much easier. Note, The Answer Lady is NOT suggesting you get soused and thus tempted to make some inappropriate comment which you will regret. Meanwhile, instead of taking over the Sunday dinners, invite the clan over to your house for an afternoon of football and tail-gate fixins. That way you shine in your own spotlight, not hers.

NANA absolutely loves tennis balls. Her favorite past time is playing fetch and running for tennis balls as fast as she can. She also loves long walks and belly rubs. Nana is a polite girl and is excelling in the shelter’s CLASS program. She loves to relax in her crate and she comes when callled.
«
PIPER is an energetic pug shar pei mix. She quivers with excitement as she is harnessed and prances proudly during her walk. Piper is a student in the shelter’s CLASS program and already knows the basics of polite behavior such as sit, and attention. Piper would be a great companion for people looking for a smaller dog.

The Movie Column
T
By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society
he Cape May Film Festival starts in less than a month, and there are many feature films, select shorts, and engaging documentaries coming this year. The event is November 13-15 at West Cape May Borough Hall and Fire Hall. Here is a quick glimpse at the short films we will be featuring at this year’s festival. Requiem for a Robot: A short film about a robot that has lived on the edge for too long. Alcoholism, running with the wrong crowd, the robot seeks out the one who created it (known as “dad”) for an understanding of the past. What is nearly a silly film becomes very personal, one that has universal appeal in its emotion. A Pirate’s Life is another short slice of life film (from a pre-school child’s perspective). What does it take to be a pirate? To be an appropriate pirate, the kid needs: the right clothing, to find a way to sail the seas, and of course treasure to bury. The last part may not be so easy — but he has a plan! Verge is poetry in motion with the focus
4 MCKINLEY AVENUE, VILLAS
Requiem for a Robot is part of this year’s festival on one young woman’s quest to not rush into adulthood. Imagery is New Jersey home grown and flashed in quick glimpses not unlike the brevity of youth. This short is beautifully shot and expertly edited. On the documentary schedule, there are several films to enjoy. The Change of Tides features a World War II navy veteran telling of his time in battle. The film entitled Out features candid and engaging subjects speaking about their memories of coming out to family and the world. There are also a variety of films about the expression of art.

Feature films include Northern Borders, starring Oscar nominee Bruce Dern. The director of the film, Jay Craven, will join us Friday night for a guest presentation after the screening. Saturday night features Jon Stewart’s film, Rosewater, about a journalist detained in Iran. We host a guest presentation by journalists who have been on the front lines and returned to tell their stories. We will present full reviews of these films in upcoming editions of this column. Next week, we will review the 1924 silent film classic, Phantom of the Opera as East Lynne Theater and Cape May Film Society prepare to screen the film with an amazing new live organ composition! Please support the work of the Cape May Film Festival and our partners in the arts like East Lynne Theater. It’s just about the easiest thing you can do while having fun at the same time. Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
f you are a birder, Cape May can be poisonous to plans, even if those plans are to go birding. Take yesterday. After discussing optics with a couple at Northwood Center in Cape May Point, I aspired to drive to the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point and take in the raptor show. I never got farther than my car parked on East Lake Drive. The woods next to Northwood were vibrating with migrating warblers, heading for Central America and the West Indies. Cape May is a stopover location or “migrant trap” as it is known in birding jargon. Swarms of warblers invariably attract swarms of warblers admirers. Sure enough standing around my car were a dozen warbler aspirants, part of a birding tour. Some were from Oregon, others from Texas, California, Ohio and New York. Some were known to me, most were not. All were visiting Cape May for the first time and all were enchanted by in-your-face looks at blackpoll warbler, red-eyed vireo, and glimpses of the dapper black-throated blue warbler, a gentrified warbler, the kid of warbler you wouldn’t mind your son or daughter going out with. In
the undergrowth, a female American redstart darted in and out of view. American redstart is something of a flash dancer among warblers. Fanning their tails to display large red or yellow panels that are believed to startle insects into flight. American redstart then sallies out and snaps the insect out of the air. The unexpected prize was a blue-winged warbler, a golden bodied, blue-winged beauty that should have passed through Cape May weeks ago. Songbird migration continues on into
November. We’ll have fewer warblers but lots of middle-distance migrants like goldencrowned kinglet, cedar waxwing, eastern bluebird and, of course, lots of migrating hawks, providing you can steel yourself to ignore the bounty of migrating birds festooned about your yard and make it to the hawk watch platform. And now the sad news — 90% of all birds fail to reach breeding age. Migration is the first big cut in the ranks of first-year birds. So come on out — grab your binoculars and cheer on the survivors. Ma Nature showcases a new cast of players every morning. Cape May is the stage. Stop by the Northwood Center, 701 East Lake Drive and pick up a free bird checkist enumerating all the players, then take in the show next door. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4pm at Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised — call 609-884-2736.
