Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

am not exactly sure what the most important issue is in the city right now as we approach an election (on November 3) for a vacant seat on Cape May City Council. Beach safety, thanks to the indefatigable efforts of Chad deSatnick, is a very important issue that sadly came to the fore again recently due to a life-threatening neck injury suffered by a 17-year-old in the water off Poverty Beach. The (mis)management of Convention Hall has, in my view, been a hot button topic since the day it opened in 2012, with a moneysucking Peter Nero concert. And making the right decisions that sustain Cape May’s viability and desirability as a tourism favorite is about as important as it gets. But I think it’s the debacle surrounding Cape May Police Department, whether you like it or not, that will be getting the people roused in the run-up to the ballot. The November 3 election will mark eight months to the day since the city council voted to demote Rob Sheehan from police chief to captain, after less than a year in the job. I’ve devoted many column inches to this topic. I said from the beginning that it was

a decision that stank, and I tried to outline in detail WHY I think it happened. It’s still clear to me today that Sheehan was a political scapegoat, sacrificed after it was revealed to the world that his number two, Lieutenant Chuck Lear, had been using comp time — in violation of a contract he had signed in 2013. The issue became a controversy because of the efforts of a former sergeant in the CMPD, Rusty Chew, who decided to become a whistleblower and complain to the state’s Attorney General about the practice, which had actually been going on in the CMPD for more than a

decade (while Chew was still employed by the department). Then the county prosecutor’s office got involved but came to the conclusion that this was a matter that should be sorted out by the city, without any need for outside intervention. Now, no matter what you think of Chew’s actions, this issue would not have blown up if the city had handled the situation with wisdom and grace. Here is what they should have done — Bruce MacLeod, City Manager, should have gone to Chief Sheehan and Lieutenant Lear and said something along these lines, “Guys, we know the department has been doing this for years, but now is the time to stop. The heat is on, a contract was signed in 2013, and it’s time to honor that contract. End of story.” Guess what would have happened? Rusty Chew and presumably anyone else with an axe to grind about Lieutenant Lear’s arrangement would have backed off. Maybe Lear, disappointed at losing a perk that had, in the eyes of many people I’ve spoken to, worked quite well for the department and the city, would have retired, which is something he had been

considering for a few years. This would have pleased the officers below him who had considered his longevity in the position as a promotion bottleneck. It would have kept Sheehan in his job and spared the city nearly eight months of torture that has divided citizens and made our administrators look, at times, like malicious, lying clowns. Instead, what did the city do? Paid a former major in the NJ state troopers to conduct an investigation into the CMPD that — guess what? — concluded that Lear had been using comp time. Genius! The city paid thousands of dollars (we don’t know how much because the city mischievously got around my request to find out how much the investigation had cost) to find out something they already knew. At the same time, they dragged Lear and Sheehan through the muck and painted themselves into a corner that led to that infamous vote on March 3. It was a travesty. It remains a travesty. I don’t know who exactly is the villain of the piece in this arrangement, but unless someone shows me evidence that proves otherwise (and I think it would have happened by now), I believe the demotion of Sheehan was a conspiracy undertaken by Mayor Ed Mahaney, Bruce MacLeod and city attorney, Tony Monzo. A triumvirate that I named the 3Ms. Why? I think the main reason is that Mahaney wanted to get rid of the positions of police and fire chiefs to install a Director of Public Safety who would be answerable to the city in a way that police and fire chiefs are not. But although Mahaney is smart, I don’t believe he’s quite as smart as he thinks he is. This plan, if indeed it WAS his plan, backfired, partly because of how highly Sheehan was regarded by the public, and partly because the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office was appalled by the city’s actions and started a war of words that dragged the city through the

mud, much like they had done to Sheehan. Mahaney seems to often forget just how easy it is for his behind-the-scenes manipulations to become public knowledge. Since that March 3 vote there have been several votes attempted to reinstate Sheehan, and all of them have failed. Some citizens became increasingly frustrated by these votes, and much of the frustration was aimed at Bea Pessagno, who was seen as the crucial vote on the five-member council since Mayor Mahaney and Terri Swain were never going to vote Sheehan back into office. I have talked to Pessagno several times over the last few months about her stance, but this week I wanted to get her on the record, so she could explain why she keeps voting against Sheehan’s reinstatement. First of all, she was reluctant to say too much of anything on the record because Sheehan is suing the city over his demotion. And that’s the major reason why she votes the way she has. “I can’t imagine any company promoting an employee who is in the process of suing them. My responsibility is to protect the taxpayers. And while this lawsuit is pending, I don’t believe it’s appropriate to vote for reinstatement,” said Pessagno. “I truly hope there is a happy resolution to this process.” I asked her what would happen if Sheehan agreed to drop his lawsuit. Would that influence her? “From what I know, the city has not heard from Rob Sheehan’s lawyer, so I don’t think that’s something I should comment on.” I bring this up because the question of Sheehan’s reinstatement was put to the two candidates standing for election — Roger Furlin and Tricia Hendricks — at a candidates’ debate last week. Hendricks answered that she would unequivocally vote to reinstate Sheehan. Furlin said he couldn’t commit to an answer because he didn’t know all of the facts. He was later attacked on

social media for that answer, with people saying he had come unprepared for the debate. I think that’s unfair and kneejerk. I have spent a lot of time investigating this issue, so I think I know more than a typical member of the public, but maybe less than the city council members — I say “maybe” because I wonder if both sides of the argument were relayed to city council members by the city manager and mayor (I actually doubt it). And so my point is that I think it’s wise and honest of Roger Furlin to say he doesn’t know how he would vote. Not because he’s unprepared, but because he’s very uncomfortable coming to a decision without getting the facts in front of him. And, let’s be clear here, facts are not what you get when you read 57 comments on a Facebook thread. You get opinions, and sometimes you get just plain ignorance. I hope that Furlin comes to the same conclusion as I did once I had dug into the facts surrounding Sheehan’s case, but I don’t think he should be ill-judged because he’s unwilling to make a snap decision until he believes he has those facts in front of him. It doesn’t seem like there is going to be a quick resolution to the Sheehan issue, no matter how badly some of us might want that. Somehow, I think he won’t be getting his job back in time for Christmas, for instance. In the meantime, I think the constituents of the city should be voting for a candidate who is most likely to bring wisdom, thoughtfulness, a long-term view and the ability to see both sides to every story. City council meetings have, undoubtedly, become more entertaining since Rob Sheehan’s demotion. But I’d rather get my entertainment from watching Game of Thrones or reading an Ian Rankin thriller. Some of the scenes inside City Hall during the last seven months have shown small-town life at its worst. Yes, divisions have appeared

in the community. Which, if you ask me, is a symptom of having a mayor who dabbles in the dark arts of politics. I will say it for the umpteenth time — the sooner the city’s voters replaces Ed Mahaney as mayor, the better it will be. But only if the replacement is someone who embodies the qualities I mentioned before — wisdom, thoughtfulness, a long-term view, and the ability to see both sides to every story. We have another year to suffer under Mahaney. A calm head on council should help to ensure that the next 12 months aren’t as chaotic and unseemly as the previous seven have been. Maybe then we can hope that a high-quality mayoral candidate will come forward. Because, quite honestly, who would want to walk into that nest of vipers right now? If you want to know who I would like to see in office come the end of the night on November 3, well that can wait until next week. I came away inspired by the fourth annual TEDx on Sunday for two reasons. The first is because of the impressive quality of the speakers — I could only stay for the four morning speakers, but in that time was treated to the wisdom of a world authority on breathing as a way of combating all that’s wrong with your life (I’m already trying the exercises), and a charismatic guy who worked with President Obama for four years and who used comedy as a way to sell Obamacare to the nation. The second reason I came away inspired was because of a conversation I had with Chris Kobik, superintendent of Lower Cape May Regional, where TEDx was held. Kobik blew me away with some of the initiatives that are happening at LCMR. The school may not finish near the top of those Best Schools lists you see online, but I was beyond impressed with some of the things that are happening there and am excited to share them with our readers in the not-toodistant future.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

think we need a superhero in Cape May again. “Again?” I hear you say, nervously glancing out the window at the enveloping dark. Oh yes, “again”. There was a time when every decent metropolis had its own, after the fashion of New York’s Batman. I met Batman once, and found him a dreadful bore, always bringing the conversation back to his being orphaned at an early age, and worryingly detailed accounts of how much he enjoyed wearing his rubber suit. Regardless, every city worth a spit had its caped (or uncaped) crusader. It was all done in a bit of rush, mind you, with no exact plan as to what we would use them for. Atlantic City had The Gambler, a boorish chap with a quick temper who would throw razor-edged cards at villains (or a barman who refused to serve him. In the end he had to retire after a drunken game of gin rummy in which he fumbled a cheat and lost eight fingers). Wildwood had The Wildman (they never QUITE get the idea, poor dear Wildwood), and we had Captain Cape, and I will never forget the first evening our new hero (a pass-

ing acrobat from Ireland, who’d been doing a week-long stint in prison for jumping atop the bar at The Admiral and singing rebel songs. We offered him the job as an alternative to a lengthy sentence) perched atop Congress Hall in the midst of a storm and surveyed his domain, alert for a crime to quash. After an hour and a half, he was soaked to the skin and sneezing, and had to be helped down and inside for a hot cocoa in The Brown Room. Once he felt better, in a week or so, and we added a nice hand-kitted base layer under his cape for the cold nights, he was raring to go again, and was a familiar figure on the

highest points of the city. We soon discovered that Cape May does not really have enough skyscrapers for a caped crusader to glide from one to another, but had to take the stairs and amble across a block or two to find another rooftop that suited his needs. That was no huge problem, though, as Cape May really doesn’t have many crimes so urgent that a vigilante need swing down on the end of a rope. In fact, on the one occasion Cap’n Cape DID spot a bit of villainy in progress right beneath his perch, and dropped 30 feet down to land right by the miscreant, the crime of “public drunkenness” was instantly compounded by “urinating in public”. Soon enough, tho, he was on a roll and crime in Cape May had gone from rare to slightly more rare. And then the complaints came in — of loose roof tiles, peeking into ladies’ dressing rooms, and some heavyhanded suggestions that citizens saved from unspecified bad guys showed their gratitude in cash and jewelry. We had to act, and Cap’n Cape joined our city’s other mistakes in the engine room of The Concrete Ship.

No hassles. Just tassels.

C

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s all about pumpkins

harlie Brown may be waiting in vain for the arrival of the Great Pumpkin, but that doesn’t mean you should miss out. Enjoy one of America’s native wonders at its most wonderful time of year — treat yourself to a pumpkin! Cucurbita pepo, the winter squash we call a pumpkin, has been nourishing North Americans since 7000 BC. Pumpkins are delicious and good for the whole family. Even when baked into a pie, the beloved squash is rich in beta carotene, fiber, vitamin B-12 and vitamin C. This year, Starbucks is actually adding pumpkin to its pumpkin spice lattes. Use it as a natural skin treatment — mix pumpkin puree, honey and milk, spread it on your face, and rinse it off when it dries. The vet may advise you to feed your dog pumpkin if he’s having digestive issues, or to give it to your cat to help with hairballs. You can bake a pumpkin like any other squash. Wash it, slice it in half, scoop away the strings and seeds, and bake it face

down at 375 degrees until tender. Spoon out the flesh. When choosing a pumpkin for cooking, pick a small-to-medium sized pumpkin that feels heavy. If you’re watching your budget and plan to eat your Halloween pumpkin, consider decorating it with paint or marker instead of carving it into a jacko-lantern. If you must carve, use a batterypowered light instead of a candle, lest your pumpkin pie taste waxy. In November, you can smear the inside of your jack-o-lantern with peanut butter and bird seed and hang it in a tree in your backyard. The birds don’t

seem to mind that waxiness, and it makes a nice Thanksgiving decoration. (If that seems like a lot of work, canned pumpkin is fine. I promise. Ask Linus.) You don’t have to spend all night in the pumpkin patch to get your pumpkin. Pick one up at the grocery store for about $8, or take the kids pumpkin picking. Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May hosts a Farm Fall Festival on Saturdays in October from 11 to 5. Stroll the farm’s 62 acres, take a hayride, have a beer and a pulled pork sandwich, and pick your pumpkin. Call (609) 8846542 or visit caperesorts.com for more information. Support the 4-H Club by visiting their corn maze and pumpkin patch at Lehner Farm and Nursery, 175 Route 47 South, Dias Creek, October 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 11 to 4. For $5, you can lose yourself in their family-friendly maze and raise funds for the Livestock Committee. For an additional fee, you can also pick out a pumpkin, decorate it, get your face painted. Or get a snack.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I want to start a book club but am aware that two of the prospective members are at opposite ends of the political spectrum, both equally vocal in their opinions. I don’t like confrontation but if I have to choose one friend over the other, I’m leaning toward not even starting the club, even though the one common denominator we all have is our love of literature. What should I do? — Stuck in the Middle Dear Stuck Maybe you think too much. If you’re smart enough to start a book club and you’re open enough to have friends who don’t always agree with each other but appreciate their intellect, then you’re smart enough to navigate these waters and all who are involved will be bet-

Wise answers to perplexing questions

ter for it. One word of advice — walk on up to Cape Atlantic Book Company and ask the team up there to help you choose a list of book that will get you off the ground. Dear Answer Lady My mother is late for everything and I am at my wit’s end. She has always been like this but the last incident was the most egregious. My nine-year-old daughter recently was given an award by our church and was asked to give a three-minute speech at the beginning of the program. What she wanted most was for her

grandmother to be there when she gave her speech, which was a testimony to her love for her. OF COURSE, my mother came in just as she finished. My daughter put a brave face on it, but was heartbroken. I know exactly how she feels because my whole life was like this and I cannot bear to live through it again. What can I do? – At the end of my Rope Dear Rope There is no cure for narcissism, and being chronically late is a form of narcissism, which basically is a lack of empathy. Think about it — everyone is waiting for your big entrance. Explaining that to a nine-year-old is not that easy, but you must begin now. Tell her that her grandmother loves her but has a problem organizing her time and the result of it is that she hurts people’s feelings. The Answer Lady is just guessing that you are never late, as an outgrowth of a childhood of always being left waiting. This is the lesson to your daughter — respecting that other people’s time is as important as your own. After that talk, I think a trip to Dellas Five & Dime’s soda fountain is in order.

The Movie Column

I

By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society

s it me or are there more movies than ever this Halloween season? Here are some of the films competing to creep or gross you out at theaters. And you may actually be able to bring the kids or grandkids to to enjoy! Goosebumps: The R.L. Stine bestselling youth horror books are brought to the big screen with Jack Black playing the author Stine. Critics are reacting mostly (but not completely) in the positive. Hotel Transylvania 2: Critics are not as favorable toward this sequel of the first animated kid’s film that was also panned. It probably doesn’t matter as the first one made enough green to greenlight this second helping. The Visit: Read my review of this latest film from the director of The Sixth Sense (1999), then go and watch it instead. Afraid of heights? The Walk may be your film of choice. The movie is win-

4 MCKINLEY AVENUE, VILLAS

The classic Phantom of the Opera

ning audiences and critics alike with its reenactment of a historic tightrope walk between New York City’s twin towers. Want a real scare with some cool action? You can always rent Jurassic World complete with the original bigtime monsters or Mad Max with highoctane action thrills. I know, they’re not really in the horror genre, but... let me make one scary season suggestion that you won’t forget! This Sunday, October 25, at 8:30pm,

2 W. TAMPA AVENUE, VILLAS

Nature lover’s rancher with Adorable 3 bed, 2 bath 2bd,1 ba with storage. Open beach cottage. Separate floor plan and hardwood living quarters with 2 bed. flooring. $138,900 Block to the Bay. $122,900

you’ll find the best Halloween film experience that’s nearly a century old but with a new twist. The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most beloved stories of all. It seems that every generation wants to produce the best version of this film. Sometimes studios have tripped over each other inside of a few years to put out their version. But nothing beats the original. The 1925 silent film classic with Lon Chaney is best seen on the big screen with live organ music. That experience is made even more engaging when you hear a new original composition being played while you watch. At East Lynne Theater, 500 Hughes Street in Cape May, you will hear award-winning organist Wayne Zimmerman playing that score while you watch the classic. Bird Droppings

Y

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

es, this is the weekend the birders come out to play. Since 1946, the New Jersey Audubon Society has been holding their annual meeting, aka The Bird Show, in Cape May. It has morphed into a celebration of birds that welcomes birders, nonbirders and anyone in between. The Cape May Convention Center will be crammed with booth and vendors treating all aspects of bird watching — from backyard bird feeding to bird tours visiting places even Rand McNally has never heard of Friday through Sunday. Friday hours: 12:00 to 5:00 Saturday: 10:00 to 5:00 Sunday 10:00 to 3:00 Why Cape May? Because it is the greatest bird watching destination in North America; arguably the world and possibly the universe (but this has yet to be tested). Why now? Fall migration is at its peak. Peak numbers. Peak species diversity. And this is the time of year that Golden Eagles are heading south. Golden Eagles always draw a crowd at the hawk watch platform at Cape

May Point State Park. Some Cape May residents of long standing are probably perplexed, recalling as they do that Audubon used to come to town at the end of September. Yes they did. But that was before the number of early season migrants diminished and before we realized how exciting October and November can be for migration. Lots of hawks, lots of waterfowl, tons of sparrows, finches, kinglets, robins, icterids. What’s an icterid? Come to The Bird

Show and find out and in the process discover why birding is North America’s second largest and fastest growing outdoor activity with 47,000,000 advocates in the US alone. If you don’t have binoculars, all the top manufacturers will be at the Cape May Convention Center and be pleased to help you amend this avocational shortfall. Now all you need is a field guide and there will be publishers on hand to help you out there. Me? I’ll be around but count on me to be at the hawk watch at Cape May Point State Park. The winds will be perfect and Golden Eagles are on the prowl. Of course I’ll enjoy the scores of Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks, too. Cooper’s Hawks are guaranteed. See you under raptor-filled skies. Seymore Thanu (alias: Pete Dunne), leads a bird walk Monday mornings in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He hosts an introduction to Birding Course Wednesdays 2-4pm at Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised — call 609-884-2736.
