Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

am not sure if anyone seeks or needs my opinion before voting in the election for Cape May City Council this coming Tuesday. I’m guessing most of the people who ARE voting on November 3 (and I really hope you make the effort) have a fairly good idea which way they’re going to go. Having said that, given the approaches that have been made to me in the last week or so from supporters of both of the two candidates, clearly some people care about my view. I’ve been offered bribes in the form of cold, hard cash, Cadbury’s Fruit & Nut chocolate, Johnnie Walker Black whisky, chocolate stout and a Filson weekender bag. Okay, perhaps not. But these ARE some of my favorite things in case anyone’s going holiday shopping any time soon. I’m going to level with you (naturally, I always try and do that) and say that I am not passionate about either of the two candidates, Roger Furlin and Tricia Hendricks. Is that level enough for you? Here are a few pros and cons for each candidate, in my humble opinion. I like Roger’s calm, thoughtful approach.

He doesn’t seem like someone who makes kneejerk, impulsive decisions. And he’s not a man who likes confrontation. I can see how his addition would perhaps calm some of the antagonism that exists in City Hall. Not that I see him as a magical peacemaker — I just think his vibe could be conducive to worthwhile conversations on council (what a thought!). On the downside, Roger lacks experience and nous. He is serving on the Historic Preservation Commission, but that doesn’t compare to the task of being a councilmember. I think Roger needs to get up to speed on

many issues, and the machinations of local government. I’m guessing he knows this. As for Tricia, she’s smart and she’s a firecracker. I’ve watched her make life miserable for Mayor Ed Mahaney at many council meetings. And that’s something I like about her. She’s persistent and won’t give up when she’s on the trail of something. Again, I like and respect this quality. But then... I wonder if a firecracker is what we need on council right now, and in the future. It won’t help get Rob Sheehan his job back as Chief of Police. We’ve witnessed enough at city council meetings to know that the town rising up in anger against Sheehan’s March 3 demotion has not made a difference. I feel a craftier approach might be necessary. And, yes, probably a longer-term approach. Chief Sheehan likely won’t get his job back any time soon. And it is NOT the only issue facing Cape May, by a long shot. My instinct says that Roger Furlin is the better choice. But whoever wins, we need to start moving forward together in order to keep Cape May viable — though we need, oh boy do we need, a new mayor in 2016.

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

hat do you MEAN you don’t like bats? EVERYBODY loves bats at Halloween! Either way, bats are happening in our fair spooky city on October 31, so you best get with it. To be more specific, my order of 300 “Genuine Vampire Bats” from a splendid looking Chinese online emporium looks set to arrive JUST in time for the wee beasties to acclimatize and work up an appetite. Apparently the bats are not actually capable (by “capable” I mean “likely to”) kill a person, unless that person happens to be the first one they encounter en masse when they flock from the D’Catur Mansion belfry, in which case they will fall upon them and drain them dry in 10 seconds. So if you must be around my block at sunset on Halloween, best be fast on your toes. What I have planned, though, is not ONE of you being bitten 300 times, but 300 of you being bitten once each! Masterful, eh? Everyone will have a memorable Halloween tale to tell, assuming my creatures of the night don’t have rabies or plague or spread

the plague of vampirism (we simply cannot have another vampire in Cape May: that last one took years to winkle out, and managed to become mayor before we finally staked him. In fairness, he was the third mayor we staked that winter, just to be on the safe side). Also, each bat will be dressed in a tiny monkey costume, for full effect (the last time, our plan to dress 300 monkeys in bat costumes worked very well indeed until they leapt from the Belfry: there is still a stain on the front step, though it does work well in deterring Boy Scouts and Mormons. What my little prank will ensure, though,

is that Cape May’s Halloween will have just the right mix of thrilling and bloody, with some raw terror thrown in. Actually now, I review my electronic mail communications with the supplier, it seems that I did not realise that every order was for a set of 100 bats, rather than singles, and so I may have inadvertently arranged for 300 crates of 100 to arrive by truck in the dead of night. I may have to do some extra calculations, as 30,000 bats will need at least 30,000 bites to eat that evening. This could pose a problem for those citizens not able to spare a pint or few of blood, so I may be forced to institute “Operation Wildwood”. As you may recall, this is what we do whenever we need spare bodies for a wide range of decorative, medical or sacrificial reasons, and results in busloads of eager and husky Wildwooders arriving with their “You Have Won an Unexpected Night In Cape May: Pack Light And Don’t Tell People Where You’re Going!” tickets held high in their excited little fists. I can hear the shrieks already!

No hassles. Just tassels.

The Activity Column

P

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learn the skills your ancestors took for granted

icture yourself as a settler in early America. It’s 1804. The Revolution is won, but you miss those handy manufactured English goods. Now, you have to make everything yourself. Before you can even get to work, you have to create your tools, or order them from a local craftsman. You can’t just run to Ye Olde Home Depot. Want to cook over your open hearth? A pot hanger would be handy, or a spider pan with little legs. See what the local blacksmith can do. Now you can concentrate on preparing your meal. But first, you need to sweep away the ash, so you make a broom. Use strong linen thread to secure straw or corn husks onto a stick. You don’t want to be accused of “flying off the handle,” so make sure your broom is well constructed. Even then, expect strands to fall away pretty regularly. Look forward to 1810, when Levi Dickerson invents the foottreadle broom machine, and 1820, when the Shakers use wire and a vise, before a broom will be built to last.

Once the hearth is clean, prepare a meal from vegetables you harvested in baskets that you wove for yourself. After cleanup, make some clothes for your children, using yarn you spun from sheep you sheared. Relax, go to bed, and do it all again tomorrow. Are you impressed by your eight-times great grandparents yet? Learn what they knew at Historic Cold Spring Village, the living history museum located three miles north of Cape May at 720 Route 9. Take a course in mitten knitting, or learn to cook over an open hearth and bake in a beehive oven.

Make your own whisk broom or basket. Make a drop spindle and use it to spin your own yarn, or make a quilted ornament for your Christmas tree. You can even learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing. Classes are designed for adults and teenagers aged 16 and up. Tuition ranges from about $45 to $75, and you get to take home what you make. Blacksmithing is $250 or $500. Enrollment is limited, and some classes, like knitting, require basic or intermediate skills. Call 609-8982300, extension 10 or visit www.hcsv.org/ folkschool for more information. You can also enjoy autumn in the village at the Candlelight Walk on Saturday, November 7. The Friends of Historic Cold Spring Village host this annual event, featuring luminaries lighting your way between buildings, where wine, beer and a variety of light fare will be served. Desserts and hot beverages are served at the Village Pavilion, and the Country Store is open for holiday shopping. Tickets are $30 per person.

The book that makes the perfect holiday gift! It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.

These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store... ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

Patricia Gray HENDRICKS city council

Cape M ay our city our choice our future

Three former Cape May Mayors endorse Patricia Gray Hendricks! Our City

“Our City needs Tricia Hendricks on City Council. She constantly demonstrates her love and interest for our community and she continually attends the City Council meetings. She understands all the issues the City is facing. This includes reinstating our well respected police chief. She is also on top of the out-of-control legal expenses which are taking our tax dollars. Tricia is a spit-fire and is not afraid to voice her feelings and to represent the citizenry of Cape May. I urge all voters to join me and my wife Jane in voting for Patricia Gray Hendricks for City Council on November 3rd.” Robert W. Elwell, Sr., Mayor Emeritus

Our Choice

“The Best Choice, the only choice. Patricia Gray Hendricks is that person. Her outstanding qualifications include her knowledge and ability, but most important is the fact that she will listen, discuss and speak out to represent all of the people. She will not only vote on the issues, but will explain her reasons for her vote. The time is now to elect a person who will respect and represent all the people of Cape May. Tricia is that person and we need her to put our city government back on the right path. We must not miss this opportunity, and I urge the people of Cape May to join with me and Mary Ann to support and elect Patricia Gray Hendricks on Nov. 3rd.” William G. Gaffney, Mayor Emeritus

Our Future

“The future of Cape May needs Patricia Gray Hendricks, an accomplished leader, who has demonstrated her commitment by being an ever present voice of reason, caring, and compassion.. Thanks to Tricia’s persistence and commitment to gaining transparency, the proposed resolutions are now published on the City’s web site prior to Council meetings, and taxpayers have a greater understanding of some of the budget items that were illusive and confusing. Tricia’s commitment to all of our citizens includes her insistence on reinstating Rob Sheehan as Police Chief, proper Fire Department staffing, elimination of the dangerous “shore break”, and ensuring uniform enforcement of City Ordinances. I sincerely hope that you will join Lydia and me on November 3rd by casting your vote for Tricia. A vote for Tricia is a vote that guarantees that your voice will be heard.” Jerome E. Inderwies, Sr., Mayor Emeritus

A vote for Patricia Gray Hendricks is a vote for a Cape May we can all be proud of.

Paid for by the Committee to Elect Patricia Gray Hendricks

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have been dating this man for about two months and lately I noticed that when we make plans for the weekend he blows me off to go fishing or watch football with his friends. I really like him and don’t want to lose him, but is this acceptable behavior? — Dissed Dear Dissed This is, of course, unacceptable and the Answer Lady thinks you know this or you would not be asking. It is unacceptable for a two-month relationship. It is unacceptable for a 22-year-relationship. Relationships are built on mutual respect and this is a clear signal that things are headed down the slippery slope. What to do? A trip to Harbor View restaurant this weekend is in order. There’s nothing like a cocktail, a good meal and a good view to have

Wise answers to perplexing questions

a heart to heart with your guy. Simply ask him very sweetly if he wants the relationship to continue. If he says yes, then tell him he must honor the plans the two of make or else. And here’s the key — you have to mean the “or else” or else, don’t say it. He’ll get the message. Then you’ll kiss and have a lovely make-up Dear Answer Lady This year my mother-in-law found herself in an empty nest. My brother-in-law graduated from college in May and went off to New York City to find fortune and fame. And that’s

when she began to have an obsessive need to be with her Pomeranian. She can’t go anywhere without that dog. It’s insane. If we eat at home, she brings the dog to the table. If we eat out, it has to be a dog-friendly eatery. It’s October. Most of those restaurants are closed or at least the patios are. So, then she says, “No problem. I’m happy to cook. Come over to my place.” And the dog is sitting on the kitchen counter. There must be something we can do, Answer Lady. — Dog Gone Mad Dear Dog Gone The answer is that your mother-in-law needs a beau or a hobby which takes her away from the pooch, even if just for the odd afternoon. The Answer Lady suggests a Cape May Whale Watcher cruise around the island. Aqua Trails offers kayaking trips, which would certainly get her out sans pooch. There is also the Cape May Bird Observatory. You can’t take a doggie on a birding tour. It might be just what she needs to jump start her into a different modus operandi. And you never know, she might meet someone who will keep her occupied.

Meet PUPPY, a six year old mastiff mix. He loves to play fetch in the yard and politely returns the ball. Puppy settles nicely in a crate and awaits his food bowl. He walks well on the leash and does not react to other dogs passing him. He is extraordinarily affectionate and gentle for a larger breed and would make a loving addition to any family.

«

HUCK is a middle aged Great Dane Mix with a spring in his step and a playful attitude. He loves to run in the yard, belly flop in the baby pool, and take long walks. There is nothing old about Huck. He always has a smile on his face and would make a great family member for those that appreciate a larger dog.

Meet MOMMY, a friendly pit bull terrier mix. She loves squeaky toys. She is enthusiastic about life. She enjoys games of fetch, taking leisurely walks, or chilling out for a belly rub. The Movie Column

B

By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Society

ruce Dern is a familiar face to many film lovers, but only those who know him well appreciate his breadth and long-standing career. With 147 acting credits to his name, there is little dispute that he is one of the hardest working actors. He has two Oscar nominations, one for Best Actor in Nebraska just last year (he didn’t win Oscar but won that award at Cannes and at a variety of festivals) and one for Best Supporting Actor in Coming Home in 1979. His latest film is Northern Borders, based on a novel by Howard Frank Mosher. In the film, he plays Austin Kittredge, the “meanest bastard in Kingdom County” Vermont (his character’s own admission — and you heard it from him first). His grandson, played by Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick, a young actor who has already a string of hit films under his belt, is coming to live with him! Soon, the grandson sees that his grandfather is a “mean bastard” especially with regard to how he relates (or fails to relate) with his wife, Abiah (played by Geneviève Bujold).

4 MCKINLEY AVENUE, VILLAS

Bruce Dern excels in Northern Borders Northern Borders is a quintessential relationship film with characters rich and engaging and interpersonal encounters ripe with conflict. The grandparents have an eccentricity that is subtly well-played by these two wonderful actors. The grandson moving in breathes a new dimension into the household. The story is set on a Vermont farm in the 1950s where Abiah is a hold out against electricity being connected to the house. But oh were that the only conflict. This film has a depth that is palatable, yet it never dives too deeply so as to

lose the connectivity of its characters. You begin to love these characters ( yes, even the mean bastard) until you feel you know them somehow by the end. It is both local and universal in its storytelling with themes that you may well see running through your own back yard. Jay Craven wrote and directed the film, and he will be joining us on Friday night of the Cape May Film Festival, November 13, at the West Cape May Borough Hall. Craven’s work spans several years as well. His success on the festival circuit is well documented with three awards. We look forward to visiting with this honored director at our festival. The Cape May Film Festival is in its 15th year, and it cannot happen without your support, local (or visiting) film lover. We’re screening dozens of films this year, and we need you to join us to make this year the most successful ever. Learn more at www. capemayfilm.org or by emailing capemayfilm@hotmail.com.
