Ramblings From The Editor

N

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ot that keen on jazz? Feel like it’s just a cacophony of blaring trumpets, trombones and talented guitarists showing off? That’s great — you should have a blast at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival this weekend. What’s wrong? Not quite following me? I don’t blame you, since this event is not your typical jazz festival. Sure, aficionados of the genre WILL find plenty of trumpets, trombones and talented guitarists upon which to feast. But it’s so much more than that. Ask Joe Carney, who’ll tell you that Davina and the Vagabonds (who play Carney’s twice on Saturday night) are the most entertaining band he’s ever seen at his bar — and Joe has been in the entertainment business for four decades. The Vagabonds, led by a siren of a singer from Minnesota, will blow off the roof with their fusion of NOLA blues, Memphis soul, pop, jazz and old school rock ’n’ roll, Then there is PhillyBloco, who play an intoxicating mix of samba, funk and reggae — they perform twice at Cabanas over the weekend and I guarantee the dance floor will

be one big, grinding bumpathon. Or is that one big, bumping grindathon? Either works. Or how about the fantastic, iconic Skatalites, who are responsible for the ska music craze which took hold of Britain in the late 1970s and which later became big (for the third time) in the US, around the late 1980s. The centerpiece of this festival, though, is a jazz legend, a genuine world-class performer. And we’re not talking about worldclass in the same way that a local bar might boast about its “world class wings”. No, Wynton Marsalis is a genuine world-class

jazz superstar, the first jazz musician to win the Pulitzer Prize and a man with NINE Grammy awards under his belt. Quite how the Exit Zero Jazz Festival organizer Michael Kline managed to persuade, or pay, Marsalis to leave his lofty perch at the Lincoln Center in Manhattan to head for humble Cape May is up for debate — perhaps he sold his soul, or maybe his home. Either way, the two performances being played by Marsalis at Lower Cape May Regional’s Schmidtchen Theater this Saturday represent a cultural landmark for America’s Original Seaside Resort. Do yourself a favor and be a part of this festival, whether it’s taking in the brilliance of Marsalis in a beautiful theater or hitting the bars of Cape May, courtesy of the superaffordable POPs pass, which gets you entry to all the club events for just $45. We published a program which was distributed around town today. You can also see it online at www.exitzero.us. Or visit the www.exit0jazzfest.com. Better yet, you can call Michael on (609) 849-9202. See you around town!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

t is time, dear hearts, to begin casting for my Holiday Panto! Oh YES it is! BEHIND you! Ahem: Sorry, I got carried away by the smell of the greasepaint, the rustle of layered ballgowns and the dazzling colors of a thousand pheasant feathers (and that’s just Kitchener heading out in his Sunday best do run some errands). I will, of course, be taking the main role, as my fans would go berserk otherwise. And we have the usual scattering of stellar talent from Cape May Stage, plus the annual flurry of pleas to be included from De Niro, Eastwood, Jackman, Close and their ilk. But the most important parts are, as usual, those taken by YOU, my friends! Without your heartfelt and raw talent, and your propensity to fall off the stage/into the scenery at random moments, we would lack that comedic touch that draws crowds from several hundred yards around. And what, I hear you demand (oh YES I do!) is the performance? Why, my absolute favorite, that panto classic, Hansel and Gretel! I will be the witch, and Young Albert

will play the Stepmother (he is busy working on his costume now, judging by the growling and ripping noises from the drawing room. Either that or he has dragged another late Showbie in and is having some sport). Of course we will add some little touches of genius to make it our very own: the witch’s cabin will be set in Wildwood, and made of saltwater taffy, which the audience will be obliged to eat at the final curtain! We need, of course (assuming that damned Depp fella doesnt wear me down with his incessant pleas to be Gretel) the young protagonists cast from locals: the kids need to be comely,

lithe and able to withstand several (three at most, maybe four, certainly no more than five) in the borrowed pizza oven we are siting in the cottage: it will be hot, still, for authenticity, but surely nothing more than some rapid dancing from foot to foot can handle? And at the end (if you cannot handle what the young people these days call “spoilers” then avery your eyes then strike yourself hard on the temple for being so wet) the father will not be happily reunited with his children, on account of his being so weak as to send them off to perish in the first place: instead, the stepmother has killed and eaten him, and succumbed to rapid onset of CJD and so is as simple as a kitten, leaving Hansel and Gretel to manage their newfound fortune, which they invest heavily in an Atlantic City casino, losing it all and ending up as cheap escorts hustling tourists for candy and quarters, before being adopted by a kindly and timeless old Cape May gent, who has bet a dollar that he can teach them to speak Klingon. Just the usual real-life story, my friends.

The Activity Column

L

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a night at the theater

ive theater is a unique night out, every time. When you take your seat, you become part of the experience. You and your fellow audience members are in the same room as the performers, sometimes only a few feet away. There is an exchange. Your laugh, your gasp, your applause, your very presence contributes something. Tomorrow night, when you aren’t there, the show will be a little different. This human interaction appeals to something deep inside us. It’s different from watching television while folding laundry, and it’s especially appealing in the darker months of the year. You get to concentrate. You shine some light on the darker corners of your brain, where your deep thoughts haven’t penetrated in a while. Maybe you’ll see something thought provoking, and ponder it for months. Maybe you’ll be entertained for a few hours of silliness. Maybe you’ll actively hate the show, but at least you’ll be engaged. Cape May offers several options for live theater this fall. Cape May Stage presents

Trying through November 15. This “crossgenerational tour de force” written by Joanna McLelland Glass been acclaimed by audiences and critics. Young people starting out in their careers will relate, as will their elders who are winding down. Treat the Millennial in your life. A Cape May Christmas opens November 27 and tells the tale of a secret visit from the Clauses. Tickets for Cape May Stage are $38 for adults, $33 for seniors (62 and up), and $18 for active military or students. Pay What You Wish Night for Trying is Friday, November 6. For A Cape

May Christmas, Pay what You Wish Night is Friday, December 18, and there is a half-price holiday special on Tuesday, December 22. The East Lynne Theater Company presents Detectives Holmes and Carter, a radio-style play bringing Sherlock Holmes of London together with Nick Carter of Manhattan. Travel in time from Victorian England to twentieth-century America, watch the actors switch between roles, and marvel at the sound effects while you get lost in tales of deduction, November 6 and 7 at 8. On November 15, the final day of the Cape May Film Festival, East Lynne presents short films by Charlie Chaplin. The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, based on the book by L. Frank Baum, begins November 27. Bring the kids — the East Lynne Theater Company is for ages 12 and under, $25 for adults and $15 for students and active military. Over at Elaine’s Dinner Theater, they are preparing for their Christmas show, which is sure to be a singing, dancing delight. Watch their website, elainescapemay.com, for more information.

A must for every beach lover! Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks. Available from the Exit Zero Stores at 109 Sunset and 316 Beach, along with Whale’s Tale, Good Scents and Cape Atlantic Book Company. Or buy online at ezstore.us/books

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am planning a 50th birthday party for my brother and me. We are twins. The problem is I am still very close to his ex-wife and would like to invite her. She is, after all, the mother of his four children, my nieces and nephews. She is very friendly with my brother but not so much his current wife. In fact, they don’t speak at all. So, what do I do? I don’t want a scene but it is ludicrous for her not to be there. And by the way, it’s my birthday too. — Betwixt and Between Dear Betwixt You invite both Wife No. One and Wife No. Two, explaining very sweetly to both that each has been invited and if either of them thinks she cannot maintain, she should stay home. People usually respect that kind of forthright-

ness. Besides, with four kids, Wife No. Two is going to have to learn to suck it up, lest she end up on the cutting room floor. In the meantime, prep for that party by making a stop at Sunset Liquors. Why not use George’s as your caterer? That way, you can enjoy the partee and keep an eye on the guests with the confidence that the food will be scrumptilyicious. Good food always puts people in a good mood. Dear Answer Lady My son has started dating a young woman whom I really don’t like. It doesn’t help that I

adored his old girlfriend who was lovely, talented, loyal and stuck by him for three years. He took up with this girl after knowing her one only a couple of days. In less than a month, they were living together and now he expects me to not only invite her to Thanksgiving dinner but has warned me to be gracious to her or risk not seeing him at all over the holidays. The old girlfriend issue aside, I just don’t like her and I think my son is making a huge mistake. What do I do with that, Answer Lady? – Mother’s Worry Dear Worry The Answer Lady is guessing that your son is an adult? Maybe the new girl IS an opportunist. But she is his choice and, as you know, life is about choices and maturity is about sometimes making the wrong choices. So, by all means put your big girl panties on and welcome the new girl with, if not open arms, at least a homemade apple pie from Westside Market. And don’t forget it’s not too early to order your turkey from there. Make sure she eats and eats some more — maybe she’ll gain weight and he’ll lose interest.

The Movie Column

O

By Mal Knapp of the Cape May Film Society

n Saturday November 14, Cape May Film Festival will screen the movie Rosewater and host a panel discussion with three special guests. The movie represents the remarkable directorial debut of The Daily Show’s Emmy Award-winning host Jon Stewart. It’s based on the true story of Maziar Bahari, an Iranian-Canadian journalist who was imprisoned in Iran for 118 days in 2009. Bahari was arrested after reporting on the government’s violent reaction to protestors after a presidential election and after he participated in a satirical interview on The Daily Show. In prison, most of the abuse Bahari suffers is mental — his captors demand that he admit to being a spy but make confusing claims about what he has done wrong. Is the state playing a sophisticated game or is it just ignorant? Or is its goal simply to cause him to lose all hope? Bahari is determined to keep his hope alive. He does this by remembering life outside the prison and by imagining conver-

Rosewater is an ultimately uplifting movie sations with his father (who was already passed) about how to deal with his interrogator. As time passes, Bahari grows and becomes more able to cope, while his interrogator slowly seems to lose strength. The film is uplifting despite its predominant subject matter. We could only hope to deal with our own life challenges with a fraction of the grace we see in Bahari, but we will hear from people who have been through similar experiences. Part of our presentation Saturday night will include three reporters who have been to Iran and two of whom were

detained. They will talk about the movie, about their own experiences, and about the changing nature of the US-Iran relationship. Roxana Saberi, an American citizen reporting from Tehran, was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison. Omid Memarian, an Iranian journalist, was imprisoned, subjected to torture and held in solitary confinement until his release. Chairing the panel will be Cape May local Bob Dreyfuss, a veteran journalist for Rolling Stone magazine, who has reported from inside Iran. This year’s festival will be a three-day journey with narrative and documentary films that will move and inspire you. Friday night we will be joined by Jay Craven, director of the film Northern Borders starring Bruce Dern. On Saturday, we will host the best short films — some of which have never been seen in New Jersey before. We’re also hosting Len Guercio, film professor at Temple University as he screens the best short films from that school’s program). See more at www.capemayfilm.org or in next week’s festival edition of Exit Zero.
